Don Derrone over Vagner Rocha via unanimous decision
Vagner's entrance music should have been "Ride Of the Valkyries", but wasn't. Super easy decision as Derrone dominated this whole fight and Rocha looked like he was in way over his head. Had an unusual tactic of repeatedly trying a baseball slide into a single leg takedown, but it never worked. Some taunting near the end by Derrone.
Dave "PeeWee" Herman over "The Viking" Jon Olav Einemo via TKO (punches) in Round 2
Herman has a horrible if logical nickname. Big weight difference as Herman is about 230 lbs and Einemo 260. Announcer's hype Einemo's BJJ and Herman's college wrestling background so of course this turns into an almost totally standup strikefest. Not that I mind. Knees gallore. Einemo looks like he's taking control but Herman comes back, drops Herman with some knees, and starts unloading on him on that mat to end the fight. I though the ref stopped this a little too quickly.
Mark Munoz over Demian Maia via unanimous decision
Unofficial stipulation: Winner Probably Gets To Be Anderson Silva's Bitch In 2012. Maia comes out striking alot in Round 1, looking much more aggressive than the guy who was afraid of Silva. I give the first round to Maia, as did 2 of 3 judges. Munoz seems to have things figured out for Round 2 and takes control, including some takedowns. Round 3 is close and hard to call a winner I gave it to Maia, all three judges gave it to Munoz. I'm okay with that decision.
Kenny Florian vs Diego Nunes
John McCarthy sighting as he's randomly refereeing this match. Still waiting for an autobiography. Florian's dropped a weight class, probably for the forseeable future. I score it 2-1 Florian; I think I gave the first round to Nunes. Florian seemed a little slow to start, but ended up controlling most of the latter part of the right. Strangely bloody fight as Florian got in a elbow on Nunes' head that had him bleeding from his scalp most of the match. Not a terrible performance by Nunes as he got in some good shots, but he looked tired by the last round.
Winner Gets A Heavyweight Title Shot Against Cain Valasquez:
Junior Dos Santos over Shane Carwin via unanimous decision
Yes, decision. WTF. My Portuguese is weak but I'm pretty sure his name means "son of two saints" and definitely sounds like something you'd name a masked luchadore. Dos Santos also wins the battle of entrance music by virtue of coming out to something from the Rocky soundtrack rather than Eminem. Lots of jabbing until late in Round 1 as Dos Santos drops Carwin and unloads like a madman from the top, but Herb Dean wont stop the fight. Dos Santos even glances at the ref in surprise at one point. Round ends and we finally see the damage done: Carwin's face looks like it went through a windshield, complete with a busted nose. He bleeds the rest of the fight from several cuts and even gets checked in Round 3 because of a cut over his eye, but the doctor clears him. So much for having no chin and bad cardio (the knock on him I heard going into the Lesnar fight). Dos Santos works some leg kicks through the match, but Carwin is never dead and even gets in some good shots. Dos Santos never comes close to finishing the fight again.
