Just wanted to ask both of you a question.
How strict are you on retirement dates? I mean, some wrestlers may have retired earlier than necessary due to the way they were booked (or not booked). If someone who in real life never made it very far, retired early, becomes a huge star in the GCW Universe, isn't it conceiveable that he would have kept on going?
I'm kind off asking this also because I have been going back and forth about whether or not I should enforce retirements strictly in TNAW as well. For example, Taylor Wilde is retired in real life, but maybe she wouldn't have if there was a mainstream women's wrestling product like TNAW?

We're flexible on it, for sure, depending on the circumstances.
If someone is perfectly healthy but retires simply because in real life, he fizzled out early, he can stay around. For instance, Backlund is more or less gone from 1986-1993 in real life - that's not necessarily the case here. Clearly he was healthy enough to wrestle as he came back to WWF late 1992, so I don't think I'm cheating by using him in this time.
But if it's a well-known outside the ring thing, such as Magnum T.A.'s upcoming car accident, we honor that. It's basically case-by-case though. We're not trying to do a complete reenactment of history. Sometimes people will stay later, sometimes they'll retire early (for instance, Bobo Brazil's career ended abruptly in GCW because of a severe back injury).

I love how Ryan uses Backlund as an example of a guy we will work around, but Magnum is a guy we have to follow the rules. Asshole. Who is to say the NWF didn't implement a "No Vehicle Transportation" policy?
All kidding aside, we are pretty flexible. If a guy is still healthy, I don't think either of us have a problem with continuing to use them. It'll mostly depend on the situation. But, as an example, if in real life Jerry Lawler retired in 1984, showed no injuries, and just decided to run his own business, we'd have a discussion on if I could continue to use him. And we'd probably decide it was okay. If Lawler was injured and that's why he went to run his own business, we probably wouldn't.
And I would like to think we wouldn't let it become the norm because then we would start running into problems.

So the Von Erichs and Eddie Guerrero are still doomed, but Owen Hart will be okay and Shawn Michaels will probably never have a reason to find Jesus?

Without discussing it first with Ryan, I'm going to say that Owen's death is still going to happen. It may not be in the ring, but I doubt he makes past 1999. Shawn Michaels, on the other hand, is probably iffy. He might stick around instead of "retiring" for a few years. We'll have to wait and see though. Who knows? Michaels may not even stick in the major leagues.

Right now, my feeling is that all deaths are final, regardless of circumstance. For someone like Owen, like Coop said, it may not be in the ring, but I just wouldn't feel comfortable using him past. It's one of the things to book around.

I try not to use dead guys, but if a guy flames out, no reason he couldn't make a comeback. What exactly is a retirement date anyway? I mean technically Jerry Lawler is still wrestling in 2012, who's to say you couldn't use him all these years?

In his book, Bret Hart talks a little bit about how Owen Hart wanted to retire young. You don't need to contrive an accident that kills Owen, really; you can just have him retire in mid-1999.
It's not a huge deal, I suppose, but if it were me, I would feel kind of weird about inventing a new death for Owen. The same way it would feel kind of weird booking Chris Benoit to use chokeholds or attack women.

That might end up being what we do, Garth. Give him the happy ending.
Benoit is going to be tricky. I might just let Ryan take over that burden. I do know that if I end up with Benoit on my roster, I will have no problems pushing him or writing angles for him. But I'll probably keep him away from the women and children.

There goes the alternate universe version of the awesome Sullivan-Benoit feud. Maybe Benoit will never break out of this universe's equivilent of ECW? (Will this universe have some ECW equivilent in the mid-90s?)

My goal when doing this is to keep things as real to life as possible as far as circumstances. Having advanced knowledge of what Benoit does makes it tricky, and I'm not going to go way out of my way to have him work with Woman, but I'm not going to treat Benoit differently as far as how he potentially can be used in this universe. He may fizzle out on his own, or he may be a 10-time champion. No telling at this point.
There will be an ECW-type circuit, but it may just be one that exists in the cosmos. Ideally, I'd love somebody to come in and actually run ECW so we can have the Big 3 in the 90s, but I'm not expecting anyone to be able to keep up with the pace Josh and I set.

I hear what your saying. On your other point on adding a third the two feds I am working on currently I have the competitor being run by me as well (no detail to opponents or matches), just to see when guys are available etc. I thought about running my circuit through TEW to use the contract system and TNM for everything else, but that seemed like too much work

I can't wait to see Ryan having two weekly shows per circuit, giving him six shows a week, and twenty-four a month. Not including PPVs. Get to it, Ryan!
Oh, and there will be a time when we are both on TV at the same time. I'm almost sure of it. The NWF will want to cut into GCW's profits in any way possible.

I think it would be more fun for ECW to tangibly exist, but I know I'm not putting that kind of effort into it. Doing GCW is taxing enough. Right now, AWA technically exists too, but outside of a story about Bockwinkel signing with GCW while AWA champ, and a short working agreement with NWF, it hasn't been fleshed out too much. When ECW comes around, we'll see what happens.

I suppose we could at some point come up with a title history for something like the AWA and ECW. Besides, ECW and AWA are pretty much feeder circuits anyway.
It'd be fun to take a circuit like AWA, go back to let's say 1972. And book from there without using any talent that were being used by GCW at the time and later GCW and the NWF. So, you'd debut Hogan in the late '70s or whatever, and have him taken from you in November of 1982. It's not like there would be a time crunch since there is no possible way of catching up.
But that's more of a pipe dream than anything. Because you'd also have to be careful not to job certain guys too much since it wouldn't make any sense why GCW would push Rick Martel if he was jobbing non-stop in the AWA.

Yeah, that would definitely be fun. I'm more for doing that with ECW though if anything, and then if we build AWA, we build AWA. Really, both of our knowledge of the 60s and 70s is a lot weaker than our 80s, 90s, and 2000s, so I think it's a better use of time to focus on the more modern time period.

I followed ECW pretty closely back in the day. That would be fun. Plus it also gives guys a place to go when we are in-between using them (Terry Funk in real life).

You two are doing a great job, but ECW should probably go to someone else (no, I'm not volunteering) so that neither of you get overloaded. Especially in the TV era.

I'm pretty sure neither of us will want to create another circuit. More of a dream for later. But I don't see Ryan or I starting up an ECW circuit to run on our own. I also don't know what the overall plan is, but adding a third to this Universe could cause problems since I'm the slow one right now, and we're still pumping out cards every 2-3 days. It's hard to find someone willing to ebb and flow the way we do. We both seem to hit the writing mood at the same time.
From my previous experience with MPs and such, the more people that are involved the harder it becomes.

I agree. I wouldn't run it myself at all. ECW is just so important to that era, it would just be a shame for it to not be represented. We had grand plans to flesh out the AWA sooner or later. I know for sure that will be done with whatever the ECW circuit is.
