With Wrestlemania this weekend, and not being able to hide from it's theme song; I figured I'd make the most of it. Check out the tribute I made to ECW using the full version of the Wrestlemania Theme song. Making this video made me miss ECW so much. God, I remember when they got on TNN and I thought it was so bad. What I'd give to even have that product back! www.youtube.com/watch?v=75503Z6HZ_M

Alot of people love and miss the old ECW, but we're at that point now where half of what made ECW is either dead or retired. The only ones I can remember who are still active at a high level are Steve Corino, Jerry Lynn, Rhino and Team 3D.

So the biggest thing I learned from this video is that I really hate the full version of the Wrestlemania song.
ECW was good. It had Attitude before WWF, gave many guys the boost they needed to get to WWF or WCW, and had a devout following. But it also had alot of garbage: garbage wrestling (as in the style - which is not for everyone), garbage wrestlers (as in they stunk), at times garbage production value (ditto). They were raw and never really refined their art and that they never did because of money issues and talent being taken away makes them the tragic federation of wrestling.

I'll take ECW over TNA any day of the week. Let me know when TNA reaches 6000 fans for a PPV. ECW was innovating the industry. They are the PRIME example of a company that didn't try to duplicate anyone else style. They did their own thing and we all just went for a ride. Most wrestlers shit all over the promotions they work for. EVERYONE had good things to say about their time in ECW. (Minus getting paid of course. )

It amazes me that as brilliant as Heyman was he somehow couldn't handle money.

Handling money, and handling "The PPV company isn't paying, and the TV deal has been dropped" aren't QUITE the same ;->
However, it was pretty obvious by late 1998 that ECW was bleeding money, and would continue to if they wanted to keep ANY of thier name-guys. Even with the TNN deal (while it was around), he REALLY should have pushed the Syndicated show into new markets AS WELL. He also should NOT have banked on PPV revenues as a major source of income by having too many in a year (Remember, WWF started with 1, then 4, LONG before the monthly tradition started)

I remember when I first started watching the old ECW on the old Sportsouth channel late Saturday nights around 12 midnight. This was after Shane Douglas threw down the NWA belt, which was shocking then, because there were still some of us "old guard" still around. If you remember, TNN was still considered the "Redneck's Channel" and the product that Heyman was pushing would not work there. Now, with Spike, it would not only work, but give WWE a true run for their money, which is why I don't know why Dixie Carter didn't try to lure Paul Heyman instead of Hulk Hogan and Eric Bishoff.

Rumor I heard was that Dixie and Bish (or just Bish) approached Heyman about working for TNA, but he turned them down.

Russo claims in his book that he "personally" invited Heyman to TNA, but was refused.

Good for Heyman. Letting his legend ride and not tarnishing it by throwing his face onto the already over-crowded TNA failscape.

This was well before Hogan and Bish showed up, though... If Dixie Carter has the $$$ and gives him Da Powaz, who knows if Heyman would take it....
... Then again, you've got Hogan, Bish, and Russo... Is there REALLY room for another booker? :-P
