I think this is okay for this thread, as I'm wondering about everyone's fantasy ideas.
I've been obsessed today with two things; drinking coffee, and reviewing WCW descent in 2000. Keep in mind that Bret Hart is my favourite wrestler of all time but even I recognize his limitations.
I keep hearing that WCW's biggest blunder was wasting Bret Hart. I agree they botched it, but the plain fact is I'm not sure what they should have done. The basic consensus is that he was a top guy and should have been treated as such. So putting politics aside, what does that look like? Considering everything else that was going on in WCW, how do you make that work. It sounds like when Russo came in he recognized it right away, and the NWO 2000 was his attempt to put Bret on top and it of course got ruined by the Goldberg kick. But really, even without the Goldberg kick, does it work?
I mean you couldn't just have him work the horn, in essence giving him one fantasy like matchup after another; Sting, Savage, Flair, Hogan, Benoit, etc. That would have got old. Also not sure how it really would have fit in the faction heavy WCW. I think that feuding with Sting was the right call and could have been great, but I just don't think Bret was enough on his own. He could have been one big piece to the puzzle, but he was not their salvation.
So bottom line, how would you have used him? Hell I can't even figure out if he should have been booked as a face or heel.

I gotta be honest, once Owen died I think Bret totally checked out. He had that great match with Benoit on Nitro but other than that it was a forgettable mess.
Bret was my guy growing up and I was super pumped to see him in WCW but it was just bad from the start.

He could have been one big piece to the puzzle, but he was not their salvation. Let's assume two key real life factors remain true: 1. Bret can't associate with Bulldog and Neidhart. 2. Nitro and Thunder stay an A-show and a B-show, and don't become separate shows/brands I think "working the horn" is primarily what you do with him. Bret was planning to wind down his in-ring career. Bring him in as a face. He's got face heat from being screwed by Vince then can get more by rejecting the nWo. Don't debut him as a guest referee for Hall vs Zybysko. When the crowd starts to tire of him, turn him heel. Don't turn him face and heel a bunch of times, don't align him with Hogan. You could have him form a new Canadian faction, maybe feud with the Horsemen. Could even be a nice angle with Benoit where he's conflicted between his past with the Horsemen and being a Canadian. In the end, Benoit turns on Bret and Bret puts him over. Bret vs Hogan probably gets screwed by Hogan's creative control.
