Clash of the Champions XVIII January 21, 1992 Topeka, Kansas Your hosts are Tony Schiavone and Jim Ross
Right after the opening credits Barry Windham was seen showing up in a pick-up truck. After getting out he started to walk into the arena. On the way he promised that tonight would begin the dismantling of the Dangerous Alliance. He said his hand is finally fully healed and that anybody that wants to align themselves with Larry Zbyszko or Paul E. Dangerously is going to pay and it all would start tonight in the six-man tag.
The Steiner Brothers (Rick Steiner and Scott Steiner) defeated Mr. Hughes and Big Van Vader when R. Steiner pinned Mr. Hughes with the Steiner Bulldog in 0:10:35. Rating: ** ½
Vader and Mr. Hughes quite obviously had the size advantage going into this match, but the Steiners total brute strength was more than able to make up for the difference in size. Big Van Vader was able to hold his own against the Brothers, but Mr. Hughes seemed slightly out of his element when being thrown around with suplex after suplex Eventually Scott Steiner was able to wrestle Vader to the outside, and Rick Steiner caught a distracted Mr. Hughes with his Steiner Bulldog off of the top rope to secure the three count.
The Steiner Brothers celebrated their impressive win on the outside as Vader rolled into the ring and looked rather pissed off at the result of the match. Mr. Hughes slowly got to his feet looking like he had no idea what had just happened. Harley Race got into the ring to calm things down between his two behemoths.
Marcus Alexander Bagwell and Brian Pillman defeated Tracey Smothers and Taylor Made Man when Pillman pinned T. Smothers with the Springboard Clothesline in 0:09:03. Rating: ** 1/2
Marcus Alexander Bagwell and Brian Pillman really showed up their high flying skills here tonight and defeated the two veterans in Smothers and and Terry Taylor. Bagwell and Pillman might be a tag team to keep your eye on in the ever competitive tag division here in WCW. New United States Tag Team Champions, Big Josh and Ron Simmons, might need to be prepared for a future meeting with these two youngsters.
Eric Bischoff stood with Diamond Dallas Page in the back. Page said he was tired of being taken as a joke here in WCW, and he had just the thing to remedy the situation. He dug deep into the pockets of his diamond mine, and found somebody that will help him show just how seriously he needs to be taken. And tonight it would be the Z-Man who learned this lesson first.
Johnny B. Badd pinned Richard Morton with the Tutti Frutti in 0:05:24. Rating: * ¾
Richard Morton seemed a little lost without his former manager Alexandra York and the dismantling of the York Foundation. Rookie Johnny B. Badd took advantage of this and was able to defeat the veteran with his knockout punch, the Tutti Frutti.
Falls-Count-Anywhere Match: Cactus Jack pinned Van Hammer with the Double Arm DDT in 0:09:08. Rating: *** 1/2
Cactus Jack really showed his brutal side here tonight in this Falls Count Anywhere match. You have to hand it to Van Hammer for going toe to toe with Cactus, but we soon saw why this is Jack’s specialty match. They brawled all over the arena before ending up outside. Cactus was able to drop Hammer with his Double Arm DDT on the concrete and secured the pinfall. Unfortunately for Hammer, Cactus wasn’t done. He picked him up and dropped him with two more of his DDT’s. He was attempting to go for one more when El Gigante burst through the arena door to the outside! Cactus seemed literally frightened as Gigante walked towards him.
Cactus fled from the scene as El Gigante checked on a severely beaten Van Hammer.
Back inside the arena Tony Schiavone announced he had just gotten word that it has been confirmed by new Executive VP, Kip Allen Frey, that Lex Luger will be forced to defend the World Heavyweight Title against Sting at Superbrawl II next month due to Sting’s BattleBowl victory at Starrcade! What a main event!!! It’s all but guaranteed that Luger and his manager, Harley Race, will not be happy about this decision.
The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael Hayes and Jimmy Garvin) defeated Big Josh and Brad Armstrong when J. Garvin pinned Josh with the DDT in 0:07:56. Rating: * 3/4
This was a big win for the Fabulous Freebirds. Not only did they win the match, but they pinned ½ of the US Tag Team Champions! Big Josh and Brad Armstrong did not quite have the experience teaming together to up against such a tag team as the Freebirds, and it showed.
After Z-Man made his entrance for the next match, Diamond Dallas Page stepped out with a microphone in hand and introduced us to his new hired “friend” …. Vinnie Vegas! This guy is huge! Vegas was extremely close to 7 feet tall and easily over 300 pounds. Where in the world did Page get this guy from?
Vinnie Vegas pinned Z-Man with the Snake Eyes in 0:06:24. Rating: * [Diamond Dallas Page interfered against Z-Man.]
You had to hand it to the Z-Man, he didn’t give an inch to the much bigger guy. He went right after him from when the bell rang and even had him on the ropes a few times. Unfortunately for him DDP stayed at ringside for the match and was able to distract the referee while the Z-Man had Vegas pinned after a superb dropkick. As the Z-Man went to get the referee’s attention back on the match, Vegas recovered and shortly thereafter was able to overpower Tom Zenk and drop him face first on the turnbuckle with Snake Eyes. That was more than enough to keep the Z-Man down for the count.
After the match DDP got in the ring and got in the fallen Z-Man’s face and started yelling at him and gloating. DDP then raised Vegas’ hand in the air.
In the back the Steiner Brothers stood by with Eric Bischoff. Scott said they would be watching the next match very closely because they had their eyes on Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton and their World Tag Team Titles.
Jim Ross announced this week’s top ten to the World Heavyweight Champion:
10. Arn Anderson 9. El Gigante 8. Big Van Vader 7. Ron Simmons 6. Cactus Jack 5. Dustin Rhodes 4. Steve Austin 3. Ricky Steamboat 2. Rick Rude 1. Sting Champion: Lex Luger
Barry Windham, Dustin Rhodes and Ron Simmons defeated Arn Anderson, Larry Zbyszko and Bobby Eaton when R. Simmons pinned B. Eaton with the Powerslam in 0:09:35. Rating: * 3/4
Barry Windham was a total house of fire tonight. Not to say that Rhodes and Simmons weren’t, but Windham was really looking for revenge tonight against Larry Zbyszko after Zbyszko broke his hand a month or so ago. Windham’s hand was still taped up, but he was ready to go, and it showed here tonight. Windham, Rhodes, and Simmons pretty much thoroughly dominated the six-man tag tonight, and it didn’t take long for it to break into a full-on crazy brawl.
Eventually all six men were in the ring duking it out. Windham and Zbyszko ended up falling through the ropes and brawling through over the guardrail and into the crowd while Rhodes and Anderson duked it out at ringside. This left just Simmons and Eaton in the ring, and it looked like Eaton would get the upper hand as he was able to slam Simmons to the mat and went up top for his Alabama Jam. Simmons, however, was able to roll out of the way and Eaton landed with a thud. Simmons followed it up quickly with a whip into the ropes and his huge Powerslam! Paul E. Dangerously tried to get into the ring to break up the count, but he was a second too slow as Simmons secured the three count!
After the match was over Windham and Larry were seen fighting through the door to the back of the arena, Rhodes had bloodied Anderson by ramming his head into the ringpost, and Eaton was laying with the wind knocked out of him on the mat. This left Paul E. alone with Ron Simmons! Simmons grabbed Paul and went to clock him with a fist, but Paul ducked under and sprinted to the back while Simmons just smiled in the ring. Eventually referees stormed ringside and broke up Rhodes and Anderson and it was shown that WCW officials were trying to break up Windham and Zbyszko in the back as well.
Sting and Ricky Steamboat defeated Rick Rude and Steve Austin when Steamboat pinned Rude with the Flying Cross Body Press in 0:13:46. Rating: ** 1/2
This was just not the night for the Dangerous Alliance. Rick Rude and Steve Austin proved to be a well functioning tag team, but Ricky Steamboat and Sting really just had their number. It was a close back and forth match, but in the end it was an unseen tag to Steamboat by Sting as Sting was bouncing off the ropes that led to Steamboat being able to climb the ropes and hit an unsuspecting Rude with his Flying Cross Body Press to get the win while Sting held off Austin.
After the match Sting and Steamboat celebrated on opposite turnbuckles and played to the crowd. Unfortunately they didn’t see Lex Luger sneak into the ring and he clobbered Sting from behind with a steel folding chair! Steamboat heard the commotion and turned around, but ran right into a Stun Gun by Austin! Rude and Austin started putting the boots to Steamboat while Luger pounded away on Sting. Paul E. stood around laughing as two of his main annoyances were being beaten down.
Harley Race soon joined Luger at ringside and told him to lift him up in the Torture Rack! As Sting was about to be racked from the back ran Dustin Rhodes, Ron Simmons, and Big Josh to clear the ring! But quite a bit of damage had already been done as Steamboat and Sting were left fighting just to get to their feet.
Card rating: **
WCW Hotline:
The Fabulous Freebirds are already trying to contact new Executive VP, Kip Frey, and get a match signed to compete with Big Josh and Ron Simmons, the new US Tag Team Champions. Their claim is that they beat Big Josh and that should immediately put them in line for a shot at the titles.
It took nearly ten referees and officials to break up the fight between Barry Windham and Larry Zbyszko. It’s obvious that Larry had tried to end Windham’s career last month, and Windham is not taking it lightly. He is demanding another chance to get his hands on “the Cruncher” Larry Zbyszko.
Ricky Steamboat did get a pinfall over the United States Champion, Rick Rude. It’s unclear if this will put him next in line for a US Title shot or not. But it, at least, puts him in the running.
The Steiner Brothers are jumping at the bit to get a shot at Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton and with their impressive defeat of Big Van Vader and Mr. Hughes, they might be getting it sooner rather than later.
And it’s official, Lex Luger will do battle with Sting for the World Heavyweight Title at Superbrawl II which is February 29 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This match promises to be one for the ages.

WCW Saturday Night 1/25/92 Atlanta, GA: Center Stage Theatre Your host is Jim Ross
Jim Ross started the show off by announcing that tonight would be Lex Luger’s first World Heavyweight Title defense in a little under a month’s time as he would be defending against Flyin’ Brian. This was going to be a huge opportunity for Pillman, and when Flyin’ Brian is involved, there is always a chance of an upset. Jim Ross also announced that Paul E. was extremely upset after the Clash of the Champions did not entirely go his way. In fact, he was so upset that he announced that he had ‘Stunning’ Steve Austin sign an open contract to defend his TV Title against anybody that had the guts to get into the ring with the best wrestler on television today.
Speaking of which, Austin made his way down to ringside with Medusa and Paul E. Dangerously. Austin slid into the ring and looked ready and rearing to go as Paul E. grabbed a ringside microphone. Dangerously let it be known that Austin was ready for whoever was stupid enough to want to wrestle Austin. I don’t think anybody expect El Gigante to step out from the entrance way and walk his way to the ring with a huge smile! Dangerously and Austin both threw a fit, and in fact, Austin tried to leave the ring, but Gigante was able to grab him from behind and gave him a monster chop across the chest that dropped Austin to the mat and the bell rang! Dangerously was still throwing a fit on the outside, but this match was going to take place here and now!
El Gigante defeated Steve Austin by disqualification in 0:08:48. Rating: 1/4* (Steve Austin retained the Television Title.) [Cactus Jack and Paul E. Dangerously interfered against El Gigante.]
Well, it’s safe to say that El Gigante had this match completely in hand as he dominated Austin from the moment the bell rang. The little bit of offense Austin was able to deliver was quickly shaken off by the much bigger man. In fact, Gigante pretty much had Austin pinned with the Claw when Paul E. jumped up on the ring apron, but Gigante was prepared for it and walked over and nailed him with a right hand chop that sent Dangerously flying down to the floor. However, Cactus Jack had taken that moment to run down to the ring and slide in with a steel chair! When Gigante turned around Cactus drove the chair into Gigante’s midsection! The referee had no choice but to call for the bell.
Austin took very little time in getting the heck out of there, grabbing Medusa and Paul E. on the way and quickly jogging to the back as Cactus took the chair and rammed it into the knee of Gigante which sent the big man to the mat. Cactus took the time to deliver a couple more chair shots to the knee before several officials along with Brad Armstrong and the Z-Man ran out to clear the ring.
Cactus Jack met up with Eric Bischoff in the interview area where Bischoff drilled him on why in the world he attacked El Gigante. Cactus let it be known he didn’t want to hurt the “Gentle Giant,” he wanted to hurt Van Hammer. But poor El Gigante did not let Cactus release the pain he needed to inflict on Hammer, and so it built up in him over the last few days until it became totally unbearable. And if he didn’t let it out, he was bound to hurt himself. He had to release it on somebody and who better than to do it to the man that forced him to keep it inside. But it had now grown to such a point that he is still full of pain.
Then surprisingly Cactus started dropping elbows on the hard interview stage! Bischoff tried to get Cactus to stop, but he repeated it 3 times before getting back to his feet. He screamed out that he was in such pain that he has to release it and it’s either El Gigante or him that’s going to feel it! He let out a “Bang, bang!” all the while Armstrong and the Z-Man helped El Gigante to the back who was limping rather badly.
Taylor Made Man and Tracey Smothers defeated Chris Sullivan and John Peterson when Taylor pinned Sullivan with the Five Arm in 0:04:35. Rating: * 3/4
Jushin Liger pinned Chuck Coates with the Moonsault in 0:04:15. Rating: **
This young up and comer from Japan really had the fans going nuts for his high flying offense. Not since the Great Muta have the fans of WCW seen somebody with such flawless high risk maneuvers.
Eric Bischoff stood by in the interview area with the United States Champion, Rick Rude, and his manager, Paul E. Dangerously. Paul E. announced that Ricky Steamboat was requesting a United States Title match against his man, Rick Rude. He told Steamboat to forget it, and that just because he got a fluke pinfall over Rude at the Clash doesn’t mean anything. He claimed that since it was a tag team match that it meant nothing in the singles rankings, and that Steamboat would need to do a lot more before he got the honor of being in the ring with Rick Rude for the title.
Rick Rude then spoke up about how Steamboat may think that his cheating ways at the Clash might have resulted in his shoulders on the mat, but in the end it was Steamboat who was beaten and broken. And if he kept getting in Rude’s way that Steamboat might be in for a Rude Awakening.
Shortly after that Larry Zbyszko made his way down to ringside with Paul E. joining him halfway down the aisle for the next matchup.
Larry Zbyszko pinned Brad Armstrong with the Brain Buster in 0:07:45. Rating: *** 1/4
Zbyszko was able to pull away with an impressive win over Brad Armstrong tonight. Armstrong put up a fight, but Zbyszko was eventually able to hit his Brain Buster, and nobody gets up from that. After the match Zbyszko yelled into the camera that he wasn’t done with Barry Windham.
Non-Title Match: Big Josh and Ron Simmons defeated Bubba Howard and Karl Nelson when Josh pinned Nelson with the Northern Exposure in 0:04:52. Rating: **
The Freebirds cut an insert promo during this match announcing they were coming after Simmons and Big Josh. They called the team of Big Josh and Ron Simmons holding the US Tag Titles a joke and that they deserved to be laughed out of any arena they entered. Hayes finished it by saying that Big Josh already felt Garvin’s DDT once, and the next time it would lead to them losing the straps to the rightful owners, the Fabulous Freebirds.
Big Van Vader pinned Snake Watson with the Vader Bomb in 0:02:54. Rating: ** 1/2
Big Van Vader totally demolished Snake Watson in this match. Watson tried to throw a few punches here and there, but Vader simply shrugged them off. A choke slam, a splash, and a Vader Attack all led up to the Vader Bomb.
After the match Harley Race entered the ring and demanded that Vader drag Watson over to the turnbuckles. He delivered a pump splash from the middle turnbuckles that nearly crushed Watson. Race then told Vader to go back up and hit another! Vader, always one to follow Race’s orders, did just that! The EMTs came out immediately after and carted Watson off on a stretcher as Vader stormed around the ring screaming “Who’s the man?!”
Lex Luger made Brian Pillman submit to the Torture Rack in 0:08:34. Rating: 3/4* (Lex Luger retained the World Heavyweight Title.)
Lex Luger sure had his work cut out for him tonight. Brian Pillman knew this was the chance of a lifetime and he came out ready to pull off the upset. In fact, Luger was totally caught off guard by Pillman’s flurry of offense to start the match. Pillman got several extremely close two counts after a high crossbody and a missile dropkick, but Luger was just able to kick out at the last second. It even looked like Harley Race was breaking a sweat on the outside as he saw the Title possibly slipping from Luger’s fingers. Eventually Pillman tried to go for his Springboard Clothesline, but Luger caught him out of nowhere with a vicious powerslam! That knocked the wind out of Pillman, but and Race yelled at Luger to finish it. Luger got Pillman up and hooked him in the Torture Rack! Pillman was already hurting, and he couldn’t hold on long before giving it up.
Luger seemed to be rather upset with the fight that Pillman gave him as he wasn’t all that interested in releasing Pillman. In fact when referee Nick Patrick came to try and pull Pillman down, Luger kicked him in the midsection! Patrick crumpled to the mat as Luger continued to apply pressure to Pillman who was still in the Rack! Race entered the ring and started to yell at Pillman for thinking he was good enough to be in the ring with Luger. Things looked rather bleak for the youngster when all of a sudden the crowd exploded. Sting was sprinting down the aisle with a steel chair in hand! Luger dropped Pillman and tried to get out of the ring, but he did catch a nice shot to his back as he jumped through the ropes. Race quickly followed Luger out of the ring and they both headed to the back while Sting checked on Pillman.
Card rating: **
WCW Hotline:
Lex Luger wanted to deliver some punishment to Brian Pillman for making him fight so hard to retain his World Heavyweight Title, but Sting had other ideas. Not only could he not sit by and watch Pillman suffer in the Torture Rack, but I’m sure he wanted to inflict a little damage himself to get a little bit of revenge on Luger for the attack he was on the receiving end of at the Clash of the Champions. Only one thing is for sure, and that the match at Superbrawl II is going to be explosive.
In a surprising announcement, it was revealed that Larry Zbyszko requested a match with Barry Windham for next week! That comes as quite the surprise since we all know how badly Windham wants to get his hands on the Cruncher. Once Barry Windham was contacted he wasted no time in agreeing to the match which will main event next week’s Saturday Night.
Big Van Vader is such a jerk. He totally demolished his opponent tonight, but that wasn’t enough. He had to make the guy leave on a stretcher. Who will be able to stop this crazy, big man?
Cactus Jack is just as insane as we always thought he was, but who knew he was insane enough to anger the big man, El Gigante? Things may not end well for the man from Truth or Consequences if he ever has to face the “Gentle Giant” one on one.
Ricky Steamboat has expressed his disappointment that Rick Rude won’t defend his United States Title against him. Steamboat did reveal to the WCW Hotline, however, that he did have a plan and it will be revealed before long.
WCW Main Event this week will have the Freebirds in tag action, Vinnie Vegas makes his first appearance on WCW regular television, and in the main event the Steiner Brothers will take on Richard Morton and the Diamond Studd.

WCW Main Event 1/26/92 Atlanta, GA: Center Stage Theatre Your host is Tony Schiavone
Vinnie Vegas pinned Gregg Sawyer with the Snake Eyes in 0:04:35. Rating: ** 1/2
Diamond Dallas Page cut an insert promo during the match once again stating that with Vinnie Vegas’ size and strength and with his brain there will be no doubt that he will be controlling WCW before long. Meanwhile Vegas was again impressive in just his second match.
Marcus Alexander Bagwell pinned Mark Kyle with the Fisherman Suplex in 0:04:25. Rating: * 1/4
The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael Hayes and Jimmy Garvin) defeated Danny Poston and TC Carter when M. Hayes pinned Poston with the DDT in 0:05:14. Rating: ** 1/4
Backstage Eric Bischoff interviewed Big Josh and Ron Simmons, the current US Tag Team Champions. Big Josh said that they planned on being fighting champions, and if the Freebirds want a shot they will be more than willing to give them one. Ron Simmons then chimed in that, no offense to Brad Armstrong, but the last time they met Big Josh in the ring, he didn’t have his one true tag partner looking out for him. The next time it wouldn’t be Big Josh feeling the DDT, but one of the Freebirds getting slammed through the mat.
Tony Schiavone took the time to announce WCW’s top ten for this week:
10. Larry Zbyszko 9. Ron Simmons 8. Big Van Vader 7. El Gigante 6. Dustin Rhodes 5. Cactus Jack 4. Steve Austin 3. Ricky Steamboat 2. Rick Rude 1. Sting Champion: Lex Luger
Dustin Rhodes pinned Pat Rose with the Bulldog in 0:04:34. Rating: * 1/2
The Steiner Brothers were interviewed by Eric Bischoff in the interview area. Scott Steiner said that tonight would just be another notch in their belts and one step closer to getting their World Tag Team Titles shot against Bobby Eaton and Arn Anderson. Rick Steiner said that Anderson and Eaton are running scared because they know those titles are coming home to the Steiner Brothers real soon.
Mr. Hughes pinned Joey Maggs with the Spinning Side Slam in 0:02:44. Rating: **
Mr. Hughes and his mean streak came to play today, and unfortunately it was Joey Maggs who suffered. After the match Hughes stepped on Maggs’ chest as he left the ring. Harley Race was all smiles throughout the match as he seems to really enjoy it when his men don’t just beat their opponents but destroy them.
The Steiner Brothers (Rick Steiner and Scott Steiner) defeated Richard Morton and Diamond Studd when S. Steiner pinned R. Morton with the Frankensteiner in 0:07:29. Rating: ** 3/4
The Steiner Brothers came away with the win in a competitive match. Richard Morton and the Diamond Studd have never teamed before, but with Morton’s tag team experience and Studd’s strength, they were able to put up a decent fight. Still, the Steiners were just too much for the makeshift tag team, and nobody gets up from the Frankensteiner.
After the match as the Steiners celebrated in the ring, Bobby Eaton and Arn Anderson hit the ring from their blindside and attacked! Anderson dropped Rick Steiner with a chop block, and Eaton turned Scott around and leveled him with a left hook! Dangerously wasn’t too far behind and directed Anderson and Eaton in putting the boots to the Steiner Brothers. The entire time Anderson and Eaton were yelling at the Steiners about “do we look like we are running scared?” The beat down continued as the show went off the air.
Card rating: ** ½
WCW Hotline:
WCW Saturday Night promises to be a big night as Barry Windham is aiming for revenge as he faces the man that tried to put him into early retirement, Larry Zbyszko Paul E. Dangerously will be in Larry’s corner, but who knows if it will even matter with the mood that Windham is in.
The Steiner Brothers are furious after the attack they suffered at the hands of the World Tag Team Champions. In fact, it’s been announced that Rick Steiner will face Arn Anderson this Saturday as he tries to get some revenge for himself and his brother.
Sting, Rick Rude, Johnny B. Badd, and many others will be in action this Saturday! Make sure to tune in!

Now we have a WCW '92 circuit in addition to a WCW '89 circuit on the mothership. Hope I can manage to keep them straight...
Was Liger's finisher in WCW really just a Moonsault? Sheesh.

Well, I hope you can keep them straight. Actually, the rosters aren't all that much different so it might be harder than I thought.
According to the 1992 WCW exports I downloaded that seems to be the case. I've been trying to find out how often he used the Lyger Bomb or the Tombstone, but haven't seen any 1992 results with him using those as his finish.

WCW Saturday Night 2/1/92 Atlanta, GA: Center Stage Theatre Your host is Jim Ross
Jim Ross started the show off tonight standing by running down the card for tonight when the crowd exploded with cheers as Barry Windham stepped out. He walked over to where Jim Ross was standing and grabbed the microphone. He did not appear to be in a good mood as he made mention of his hand possibly never being the same. There were two people he blamed for this, the man that broke his hand in Larry Zbyszko and the man that ordered it to be done in Paul E. Dangerously. He said he had no idea why Larry wanted to shorten his career by requesting this match here tonight, but tonight “the Cruncher” is going to feel what it’s like to be broken and beaten. Windham said to make sure to put the kiddies to bed before his match tonight, because it wasn’t going to end pretty.
Johnny B. Badd pinned Bart Batoon with the Tutti Frutti in 0:04:34. Rating: ** 1/4
Cactus Jack pinned Randy Starr after a kneedrop in 0:03:55. Rating: **
During the match Eric Bischoff was shown backstage with El Gigante. El Gigante was sporting a knee brace, showing that Cactus Jack’s attack on him last week definitely caused some damage to the big man. Bischoff said that El Gigante had requested this time, but he wasn’t sure as to the meaning behind it since El Gigante has never spoken a word of English. It soon became apparent though as Gigante held up a finger as if to say “one second” and then he reached into a big gym bag. He pulled out a pretty good sized watermelon. Bischoff still seemed a little confused, but Gigante soon showed his point as he gribbed the watermelon in the Claw! Within seconds the watermelon burst into pieces. El Gigante then shocked Eric Bischoff by saying “Cactus Jack!” It’s obvious what he was saying, and if I were Cactus Jack I’d be slightly worried by this point.
In the meantime Cactus Jack put his opponent away with a kneedrop right across the throat. Cactus Jack is definitely known for the way he can punish his opponents and absorb punishment himself, but he has never met up with a man like El Gigante before.
Rick Steiner pinned Arn Anderson after a Steinerline in 0:08:31. Rating: ** 1/4
Rick Steiner came away with a big win here tonight, and he got a little bit of revenge for himself and his brother against the current World Tag Team Champions. It all came down to Bobby Eaton trying to interfere against Rick when he jumped up on the ring apron, but Scott Steiner was right behind him and pulled him off the ring apron and clobbered him with a few clubbing forearms. This distracted Arn Anderson enough to allow Rick Steiner to nail him with a Steinerline which was enough to keep him down for a three count. Scott Steiner soon joined Rick in the ring to celebrate while Anderson rolled to the outside and looked on.
Non-Title Match: Big Josh and Ron Simmons defeated Joe Cruz and Jim Boss when R. Simmons pinned Cruz with the Powerslam in 0:05:49. Rating: ** ¾
After the match the Fabulous Freebirds stepped out of the entrance way and gave Big Josh and Ron Simmons a little bit of mock applause. Big Josh and Ron Simmons seemed slightly irritated in the ring at this interruption. The Freebirds left ringside though before anything physical could take place.
“Ravishing” Rick Rude along with Medusa and Paul E. Dangerously entered the ring ready for the next match. His opponent, a red-masked newcomer in a full red bodysuit, named Richard Blood was already in the ring and ready to go, but Rude asked for the microphone first.
Rude let it be known that he was happy to see that Ricky Steamboat had smartened up and decided not to come to the arena tonight because if he saw him here he might just have to slap the taste out of his mouth. He thought it was funny that somebody like Steamboat could consider himself on the same level as the Ravishing One. As long as Rude had anything to say about it, he’d never let a piece of trash like Ricky Steamboat anywhere near him or the United States Title. With that he had Medusa take off his robe and prepared to do battle with the newcomer.
Non-Title Match: Richard Blood pinned Rick Rude after an inside cradle in 0:05:07. Rating: ** 1/2
Rick Rude dominated the entire match with his variety of offense. In fact, it looked like it was going to be a complete beat down of Richard Blood. Near the end Rude seemed to get a little cocky, but was still in complete control. After a bodyslam Rude walked around and swiveled his hips a few times which really got the crowd boiling. After quite the delay Rude walked over to pick Blood up from the mat, but Blood out of nowhere rolled him up! Randy Anderson dropped down and delivered the three count and we had quite the upset!
Rick Rude got to his feet and immediately started throwing a temper tantrum, kicking at the bottom rope. Suddenly Blood reached for his mask and tore it off to reveal Ricky Steamboat!!! Ricky Steamboat was under the mask! Ricky Steamboat got a big laugh as Rude looked on in shock. Paul E. threw a fit at ringside and started yelling at Randy Anderson that this wasn’t fair, but Steamboat simply left the ring all the while laughing as he got one over on Rick Rude. That’s the second time Ricky Steamboat has pinned Rick Rude in the last couple of weeks. Rick Rude may not want to defend his US Title against Steamboat, but he may not have a choice in the matter.
Big Van Vader pinned Ian Weston with the Vader Bomb in 0:02:12. Rating: ** ¼
Big Van Vader continues his run of complete and utter destruction. This time his poor victim was Ian Weston. Ian got the same treatment that Snake Watson got last week, including a choke slam that had Weston almost literally landing on his head. After the Vader Bomb it was only a matter of scraping Weston off of the mat. Vader wasn’t done, however, as he dropped two more Vader Bombs on the poor guy before he was done. Once again the stretcher was brought out, and Weston was taken to the hospital.
Due to the time that it took to safely get Weston out of the ring, Vader was slow in leaving the ring and walking back down the aisle with Harley Race. In the meantime the next match needed to get started, and Sting stepped out to his entrance music. Vader and Sting came face to face, and it looked like Vader didn’t want to let Sting pass! Sting and Vader went face to face for a few moments, saying a few words that the cameras didn’t pick up, but Harley Race was right there to separate his man from the confrontation. All we heard Race say was “Not now!” as he dragged Vader to the back. Meanwhile Sting came on down to the aisle for his match.
Sting pinned Mike Thor after the Stinger Splash in 0:04:49. Rating: ***
Lex Luger cut an insert promo during the match. He wanted Sting to know, that while Sting may think he’s the face of WCW, it was proven last year that Luger is the man that WCW knew to put their money into making the star. He brings up last year stating that when the title was vacant, who was the one getting the Title shot and who was stuck sitting in the back watching? Luger once again wants Sting to know that maybe he thinks that the fans and WCW all love him, but it’s the Total Package that people know can get the job done.
Sting got an easy win here tonight with his Stinger Splash, and is sure to be upset when he hears Luger’s comments later on when he watches.
The next match had the crowd buzzing even before the bell rang. Larry Zbyszko came down with his manager, Paul E. Dangerously to a huge chorus of boos, but the roof nearly blew off when Barry Windham came down! His hand was still taped, but he didn’t even seem to notice as his eyes were only on “the Cruncher.” Once the bell rang all hell broke loose as Windham and Zbyszko took it right to one another in a totally explosive brawl.
Barry Windham defeated Larry Zbyszko by disqualification in 0:07:00. Rating: 3/4* [The Dangerous Alliance interfered against Barry Windham.]
This match was just an example of complete brutality. And not just from Barry Windham. Larry Zbyszko gave back just as much as he took. These two men hate each other with a passion, and tonight they were finally able to go at it one on one. The match took place inside the ring, outside the ring, and even at one point Windham clotheslined Zbyszko over the guardrail! Thankfully no fans were in the area or hurt. Eventually after six and a half minutes of pure brawling Windham nailed a lariat out of nowhere that nearly tore Larry’s head off. At that moment Paul E. signaled to the back and out came Austin, Anderson, Eaton, and Rude. Just as Windham went for the cover the Dangerous Alliance entered the ring and started to stomp on the Texan causing a disqualification.
Within seconds Windham was swarmed by the four men and was given just a brutal beatdown. Larry Zbyszko soon joined in as well as Paul E. throwing in the occasion weak kick. Larry soon left the ring and grabbed a steel chair from ringside. As Austin held him Zbyszko clobbered Windham with it knocking Barry to the floor. It was soon shown that Windham was busted open from ear to ear as blood started leaking down his face. Zbyszko wasn’t done, however, as he smashed the chair across Windham’s back. Paul E. whispered something in Larry’s ear, and “the Cruncher” got a huge smile on his face as he told Eaton to pull Windham’s arm out. Eaton did just that as Zbyzko wound up and smashed the chair into Windham’s unprotected right hand!!! Windham screamed out in pain as Zbyszko and the rest of the Dangerous Alliance laughed at the damage they were doing.
That was more than enough for Dustin Rhodes, Ricky Steamboat, and the Steiner Brothers who sprinted down the aisle. The Dangerous Alliance saw them coming and quickly headed for the hills, but Rhodes actually got a hold of Austin by the tights as he was trying to get out of the ring. Rhodes let Austin have it with three big elbows to the head before Austin dropped to the mat and rolled out of the ring to get back with his stable mates. Steamboat and Scott Steiner went to check up on Windham, who was still holding his hand in immense pain, while Rick Steiner and Dustin Rhodes stood guard. The Dangerous Alliance obviously had a plan tonight and it looks like it worked in regards to Barry Windham.
Card Rating: ** 1/2
WCW Hotline:
The Dangerous Alliance showed once again why they are some of the most despicable men in wrestling. The fact that they not only brutally attacked Barry Windham once again is bad enough, but they once again tried to take away the man’s career! It is still unclear how significant the damage is to his right hand, but it still wasn’t fully healed even before the chair shot. Barry Windham is at the hospital right now getting it looked at, but one thing is clear, if he is even close to being capable enough to get back in the ring there will be hell to pay.
Steve Austin was pretty upset at the end of tonight’s show, and Dustin Rhodes took the opportunity to request a TV Title match against Austin for next week. Austin was so upset that he didn’t even confer with Paul E. and immediately accepted. Is it possible that Dustin Rhodes has Steve Austin’s number and we might see a new TV Champion next week?
The Steiner Brothers got one over on Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton tonight, and on WCW Main Event they will get another chance to prove they deserve a tag title shot as Bobby Eaton will go one on one with Scott Steiner in the main event.
Sting had a slight confrontation with another one of Harley Race’s men in Big Van Vader, Luckily it didn’t come to blows. Still, another one of Harley Race’s men in Lex Luger is trying to get under Sting’s skin before their big match at Superbrawl II. If it works it might just give Luger the advantage he needs in defending his Title.
Ricky Steamboat also pinned Rick Rude’s shoulders to the mat once again. Paul E. Dangerously and Rick Rude are still adamant that Rude will not defend his United States Title against Ricky Steamboat. Ricky Steamboat, on the other hand, has already gone to Kip Frey and asked for a Title shot.
Make sure to tune in to Main Event tomorrow as Bobby Eaton faces off with Scott Steiner, the Z-Man is in action along with Van Hammer and many others!

WCW Main Event 2/2/92 Atlanta, GA: Center Stage Theatre Your host is Tony Schiavone
The show opened with Tony Schiavone making the announcement that Barry Windham was released from the hospital last night, but the news was not good. It appears that Windham’s hand had been re-injured due to the chair shot delivered by Larry Zbyszko. Windham is currently home at his ranch in Sweetwater, Texas resting it, but it is still unclear if and when Barry Windham will be able to return to the ring.
Z-Man pinned Gregg Sawyer with the Flying Dropkick in 0:04:45. Rating: ***
Paul E. Dangerously was backstage alongside his Tag Team Champions, Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton. Anderson said that it was obvious that his defeat at the hands of Rick Steiner was a fluke, and that things would definitely be different. Eaton brought up last week and how Anderson and himself took the Steiners down, and today would be no difference. Paul E. Dangerously had a different matter on his mind, though, as he said he was sending his best wishes to Barry Windham and hoped that Windham’s hand healed enough so he could sign and pay for his medical bills. After that all three men burst into laughter, all at another man’s expense.
Jushin Liger pinned Mark Kyle after a koppo kick in 0:04:15. Rating: * 3/4
Jushin Liger’s tour of the United States continues to impress the fans as he took the victory tonight with an amazing somersault kick that he calls a koppo kick.
The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael Hayes and Jimmy Garvin) defeated Brian Pillman and Marcus Alexander Bagwell when J. Garvin pinned Bagwell with the DDT in 0:08:04. Rating: ** 1/2
This was quite the competitive match. The Freebirds definitely had their hands full with Bagwell and Pillman. It actually looked like the younger tag team might pull off the upset, but it was the experience of the Freebirds as a team that would eventually spell the downfall of Bagwell and Pillman. Marcus Bagwell had rolled up Hayes with a rolling reverse cradle, but he didn’t know that Garvin had tagged Hayes right before. Garvin quickly entered and dropped Bagwell with the DDT. Pillman tried to break up the pinfall, but Hayes was able to get up and cut him off. The Freebirds came away with another win, and are even closer to getting their US Tag Title shot.
After the match Big Josh and Ron Simmons pulled a page out of the Freebirds book as they stepped out and gave the Freebirds a little applause.
Eric Bischoff was in the WCW Headquarters announcing this week’s top ten to the World Heavyweight Title:
10. Larry Zbyszko 9. Barry Windham 8. El Gigante 7. Big Van Vader 6. Dustin Rhodes 5. Cactus Jack 4. Steve Austin 3. Ricky Steamboat 2. Rick Rude 1. Sting Champion: Lex Luger
Diamond Studd pinned Joey Maggs after a back suplex in 0:04:58. Rating: ** 1/4
Diamond Dallas Page actually accompanied the Diamond Studd to the ring for his match tonight. And we know that wherever he goes, Vinnie Vegas follows. DDP seemed to have put most of his focus into Vegas lately, but he did show some moral support for his original member of the Diamond Mine. Studd was victorious, and Page couldn’t have looked happier standing alongside his two charges.
Van Hammer pinned Pat Rose with the Hammer Rocks in 0:05:12. Rating: **
Bobby Eaton pinned Scott Steiner after a rolling reverse cradle in 0:09:01. Rating: ** 3/4 [Arn Anderson and Paul E. Dangerously interfered against Scott Steiner.]
Bobby Eaton evened the score up in their feud with the Steiner Brothers here today. It wasn’t without controversy, however. Both Rick Steiner and Arn Anderson accompanied their tag team partners to the ring for this match, but Paul E. Dangerously was also there for the match giving the advantage in numbers to the tag champs. The match was very even as both Eaton and Scott Steiner tried to wrestle to their strengths, and it resulted in a very well fought matchup. Near the end, however, Paul E. tripped Scott as he was bouncing off the ropes. This led to Rick Steiner chasing Paul E. around the ring. Meanwhile Arn Anderson hopped up on the ring apron. Scott Steiner was not happy to see this as he went over and nailed Anderson with a right hand. This was all the distraction Eaton needed as he grabbed Steiner from behind and rolled him up with a reverse cradle and hooked the tights just to make sure. Scott Steiner was caught off guard and was not able to get a shoulder up before the three count.
Anderson, Eaton, and Paul E. quickly left the ringside area as Scott Steiner looked on in disgust. Rick Steiner joined him in the ring and gave him a pat on the back, but it was obvious that Scott Steiner was disappointed with the result of the match.
Card rating: ** ½
WCW Hotline:
The Steiner Brothers and Bobby Eaton and Arn Anderson are now all tied up in their one on one matches. Will that be enough for the Steiner Brothers to guarantee their World Tag Title shot?
This Saturday Steve Austin defends his Television Title against Dustin Rhodes. Can Rhodes win his first singles Title here in WCW?
Big Josh and Ron Simmons will also be defending their US Tag Titles against the Taylor Made Man and Tracey Smothers, Big Van Vader will be in action, and Lex Luger and Sting will come face to face as they officially sign the contract for their one on one match for Superbrawl II.
Not only will all that take place, but it has just been confirmed that Executive VP, Kip Frey, will be in the arena and has a special announcement regarding the United States Title currently being held by “Ravishing” Rick Rude.

WCW Saturday Night 2/8/92 Atlanta, GA: Center Stage Theatre Your host is Jim Ross
Tonight’s show started off with Lex Luger’s music hitting as the World Heavyweight Champion came down to ringside with his manager, Harley Race, and another one of Race’s men, Mr. Hughes. The ring had been set up with a long table with chairs at both sides. On the table was a few pieces of paper. Tony Schiavone was in the ring, apparently ready to lead the proceedings of the signing of the contract for the match at Superbrawl II. As soon as Luger was settled with Race and Hughes standing behind him, Sting made his entrance to a huge crowd ovation. Sting clapped hands with the fans on his way down the aisle, and soon took his seat.
Tony Schiavone announced that both men simply had to sign their names on the last page to officially set up the match for the main event of Superbrawl. Luger signed first, but before he handed the papers to Tony Schiavone, he motioned that he wanted the microphone. Luger once again said that Sting had to realize that while they may once have been friends, he would let nobody get in the way of his success. He also said that it was not his fault that WCW knew who would bring in the money from advertisements and promotions. It would take an idiot to not see that Luger had the looks, the intelligence, and the personality to carry World Championship Wrestling. He said he felt sorry for Sting, that he’ll always be just the number two guy in WCW, but after all of this is over he may invite Sting to a party in Hollywood to help cheer him up.
Sting just sat there the whole time with no emotion showing on his face. After Luger handed the papers to Schiavone, Tony brought them over to Sting. Sting signed them, and then grabbed the microphone from Tony Schiavone. Sting said he didn’t care about parties, or being the spokesperson for McDonalds, or having his face on a Nascar car, all he cared about was the World Heavyweight Title and beating Luger into submission! He said that they may have once been friends, but Luger sold his soul when he decided to team up with Harley Race and that he didn’t even know the man that was sitting opposite of him. Sting said he would knock some sense into Luger at Superbrawl and when he was screaming in the Scorpion Deathlock, maybe it would be Luger that would need some cheering up after the match. Sting started to say something else, but Mr. Hughes had slowly walked around to the back of Sting. Mr. Hughes went to clobber him from behind, but Sting whirled around and blocked the blow! Sting pushed Hughes into the ropes, but at this point Luger grabbed the table from his side and pushed it hard into the lower back of Sting!
Sting quickly bent over in pain as Mr. Hughes started wailing on him. Luger pushed the table over and joined in on the beating. Sting quickly fell to the mat as Luger and Mr. Hughes started putting the boots to him. Even Harley Race got into the act as he dropped a couple of diving headbutts onto the fallen Sting. The attack continued for a couple of minutes as Sting tried to fight them off, but it was just too much. Once they were satisfied that they had accomplished their task Luger bent down and grabbed the microphone that had fallen to the floor. He laughed as he told the unconscious Sting to forget being the number two guy after Superbrawl because after he’s done with him he’ll be lucky to be the popcorn vendor.
After a batch of commercials the ring had been cleared and the Taylor Made Man and Tracey Smothers made their way down to the ring for their upcoming US Tag Team Title shot. Terry Taylor came down to the ring in a nice suit, but surprisingly so, so did Tracey Smothers. Both men entered the ring and Taylor asked for the microphone. The Taylor Made Man said he was use to the fine things in life, nice clothes, old brandy, fine cigars, women pampering him, but poor Tracey Smothers had never been able to appreciate the finer things in life. Tracey Smothers then took the microphone and said since joining up with Terry Taylor he realized that the life of a normal man is no life at all. He was too good to live like the trash that come to WCW events and cheer on such rejects as Big Josh and Ron Simmons. He said he’s done living like scum, and it’s now time to live the nice life. Terry Taylor said the only thing these two Taylor Made Men were missing was some gold. The Taylor Made Men slowly started taking off their suits to leave them into their wrestling tights.
Ron Simmons and Big Josh came down the aisle next, and they did not look overly happy about the comments Taylor and Smothers had made about them. Right before the bell rang, however, the Fabulous Freebirds music came over the speakers and out stepped Michael Hayes and Jimmy Garvin. Big Josh and Simmons seemed irritated at the interruption, but Hayes and Garvin just waved at the two big men and walked over to the announcers table with Jim Ross. Apparently they were going to be joining him for some color commentary.
Ron Simmons and Big Josh defeated The Taylor Made Men (Terry Taylor and Tracey Smothers) when Josh pinned T. Smothers with the Northern Exposure in 0:08:24. Rating: ** (Ron Simmons and Big Josh retained the United States Tag Team Titles.)
The Taylor Made Men put up quite the fight here tonight. They even came rather close to getting a couple of pinfalls when Big Josh or Simmons were distracted by the Fabulous Freebirds being at ringside. The Freebirds basically made fun of the two US Tag Champs throughout the match on commentary. They took to calling Big Josh a fat hillbilly and Ron Simmons a dumb hooligan. Eventually Simmons was able to hit Smothers with a jumping shoulderblock and Big Josh followed it up with the Northern Exposure sitdown splash. Simmons held Taylor off as Big Josh got the three count.
After the match the Freebirds got into the ring and offered their hands in an apparent show of respect to the United States Tag Champions, but Big Josh and Ron Simmons were definitely skeptical. The crowd were waving them off, trying to tell them not to fall for it. Apparently they decided to take the crowd’s advice as they just shrugged and turned their backs to exit the ring. The Fabulous Freebirds apparently didn’t take too kindly to this as they Hayes and Garvin chop blocked Simmons and Josh respecitively. Hayes and Garvin then quickly pulled them up and hit in sync DDT’s! The Freebirds laughed it up and celebrated as the US Tag Champs laid beaten in the ring.
El Gigante made Mike Fever submit to the Claw in 0:02:47. Rating: 1/2*
El Gigante, knee brace wrapped on, had little trouble dispatching of his opponent tonight. During the match Cactus Jack cut an insert promo where he was ramming his head into a locker yelling out that El Gigante would feel true pain soon. The pain that Cactus feels every day of his fun filled life.
Richard Morton pinned Johnny Rich with the Rock 'n Roll Buster in 0:03:48. Rating: ** 1/4
Jushin Liger pinned Diamond Dallas Page after a German suplex in 0:06:06. Rating: * 1/4
Diamond Dallas Page seemed a little over confident since he had Vinnie Vegas at ringside for his match here tonight. Little did he know how competitive Jushin Liger can be. Liger used his speed to totally keep DDP off his guard, and eventually nailed a beautiful German Suplex with a bridge to secure the three count. Vegas entered the ring after the match, but Liger was already on his way back down the aisle. DDP was very upset after the match as even though Vegas and the Diamond Studd seem to be succeeding in the ring, he is still near the bottom of the ladder. DDP screamed out to the camera that he wasn’t done with Liger yet.
Eric Bischoff was shown backstage saying that he had been in contact with Barry Windham, and Windham had said he would discuss his hand injury and his future next week on Saturday Night. Bischoff said he would be traveling to Sweet Water, Texas to conduct this sit down interview.
Big Van Vader defeated Johnny Gunn after a choke slam in 0:01:44. Rating: * ¾
Big Van Vader once again totally demolished his opponent, this time it was Johnny Gunn. Vader nearly dropped him on his head with the choke slam, and that was more than enough to keep Gunn down for the three count. After the match once again Harley Race ordered Vader to continue the punishment. Vader picked Gunn back up and dropped him with another choke slam. It looked like we might have another stretcher job on our hands, but all of a sudden the fans went crazy. Vader didn’t seem to notice as he bent over to pick Gunn back up, but Brian Pillman had slid into the ring! Vader didn’t even see him as Pillman jumped and dropkicked Vader in the back! Vader was totally caught off guard and fell through the middle ropes and landed in a heap on the outside! Vader quickly got back to his feet as Pillman grabbed Gunn and got him out of the ring as quickly as possible. Vader nearly tore the ringside apart after he saw Pillman escape to the back with his intended victim, Johnny Gunn. Harley Race tried to calm the big man down, but Vader was having none of it as he upturned a ringside table, and then grabbed a steel chair and started hammering it against the ringpost. It took some time before Race was finally able to get control of this monster.
PN News defeated Rick Thames with the Broken Record in 0:03:54. Rating: *
PN News, a rather large man who likes to rap, hasn’t been seen in a month or so. Tonight he made his return and quickly hit his splash off the top rope he calls the Broken Record for the pinfall.
The main event tonight would pit Steve Austin against Dustin Rhodes for the Television Title. Austin was accompanied to the ring by Paul E. Dangerously while Rhodes was alone. It would be interesting to see if that would be a factor in the match.
Dustin Rhodes and Steve Austin battled to a draw in 0:15:00. Rating: ** 1/2 (Steve Austin retained the Television Title.)
Dustin Rhodes and Steve Austin showed off their wrestling skills here tonight. The match started with a few minutes of chain wrestling which led to quite a few close two counts, and really showed that these two young men have a very bright future. Things took a sudden dark turn, however, when Austin sucker punched Rhodes in the corner. Rhodes didn’t take too nicely to that as he tackled Austin to the mat and from there it was a complete brawl! There were several close falls from both sides, and Paul E. even decided to get involved by tripping Rhodes as he was bouncing off the ropes. This led to Austin going for the cover and even put his feet on the ropes for leverage, but Rhodes was still able to kick out. As the time limit started to wind down Rhodes hit the Bulldog out of nowhere, but at the two count Paul E. was able to put Austin’s foot on the rope. The referee, Randy Anderson, didn’t see it, but Dustin Rhodes sure did. He reached through the ropes and pulled Paul E. into the ring! Dangerously started begging, but Rhodes would have none of it as he dropped the manager with an elbow! Austin got back to his feet, but it was just in time to eat another Bulldog! Rhodes went for the cover just as the bell rang signaling that the match had gone the full fifteen minutes allotted.
Rhodes was obviously not happy with this, but there was nothing that could be done. Randy Anderson was given the TV Title and was walking over to drape it over Austin, but Rhodes took it from his hands and lifted it up above his head to a huge ovation from the crowd. He then dropped it on Austin who was starting to make some movement. Rhodes made his way to the back as Austin and Dangerously slowly got back to their feet, realizing that they had retained the strap.
After some commercials Saturday Night came back to Kip Allen Frey and Tony Schiavone in the ring with Ricky Steamboat. Tony Schiavone held up the microphone to Frey who announced that there has been some controversy over who Rick Rude would be defending his United States Title against at Superbrawl II. Kip Frey said that he had come to a decision with the champion committee and….he was then interrupted by Rick Rude stepping out of the entranceway and walking down to the ring with Paul E. Dangerously. Dangerously had an ice pack on his head from his earler altercation with Dustin Rhodes.
Rude entered the ring with Dangerously and got right in Frey’s face and then stared down Steamboat. After a few moments Rude tore the microphone out of Schiavone’s hand. Rude said that he knew what was going on here, that Steamboat’s kissing butt routine was going to get him a US Title shot even though it was clear he didn’t deserve it. Frey tried to say something about last week, but Rude continued by saying that just because Steamboat cheated and pinned him in a tag match, and then showed that he had no wrestling ethics by pretending to be somebody else in a mask last week, and not only that, but he held the tights! There was just no justification to name Steamboat as the number one contender. Frey seemed to take this into consideration for a few seconds before motioning that he wanted the microphone back. Frey asked if Steamboat isn’t worthy of being the challenger at Superbrawl then who did deserve that right? Rick Rude rubbed his chin while he was thinking before saying that he was really impressed earlier tonight by somebody and thinks that he’d be a great challenger … he then said that Diamond Dallas Page would be a great match! The crowd audibly groaned at this, and Steamboat tried to get around Frey to get at Rude, but Frey put his hand up and motioned for Steamboat to hold on a second.
Then to the shock of the crowd, Frey agreed with Rude! Frey said that he would be more than happy to name DDP as the number one contender. Rude got a big grin on his face and high fived Paul E. but Frey said he wasn’t done. Frey said that DDP would become the number one contender IF he could beat Ricky Steamboat next week! He said that next week it would be Ricky Steamboat versus DDP, the winner would go on to face Rick Rude for the US Title at Superbrawl! Rude threw a fit in the ring while Steamboat pointed at Austin then motioned that he wanted the title around his waist! This definitely didn’t go the way that the Dangerous Alliance had planned.
Card rating: * ¾
WCW Hotline:
What a crazy night of action here on Saturday Night! Lex Luger and Sting are officially signed to wrestle at Superbrawl, and Luger definitely tried to get the upper hand tonight by laying Sting out. Sting was still a little groggy an hour or so after the attack.
Rick Rude tried to convince Kip Frey that Diamond Dallas Page was a more worthwhile opponent than Ricky Steamboat, and it seemed to work until Kip pulled a fast one and made a number one contenders match for next week. It will be DDP vs. Ricky Steamboat. DDP is obviously elated at the chance, and he promises to come well prepared. It apparently went right over his head that Rick Rude had picked him as he thought of him as an easier challenge. Still, Ricky Steamboat better not take him lightly, but knowing Steamboat, he won’t. Rick Rude will be definitely be watching this match closely.
Dustin Rhodes came THIS close to winning the TV Title tonight, and if he had just a few more seconds, he probably would have. Austin was just happy to escape with his title while Rhodes is petitioning for a rematch.
The Fabulous Freebirds finally took things one step too far as they attacked the United States Tag Team Champions, Big Josh and Ron Simmons, after their match. Big Josh and Ron Simmons were furious after the match and demanding some revenge.
Barry Windham will be interviewed next week by Eric Bischoff. Hopefully we will get some information on what the future has in store for Barry Windham and just how damaged his right hand is.
Brian Pillman may have saved Johnny Gunn’s career, but he might have just shortened his own. Big Van Vader was raging mad after Pillman interfered in the post match beatdown. We just hope that Pillman knows what he has just gotten himself into.
Tomorrow on the Main Event will be full of action as DDP’s promise for revenge on Liger might just take place as Liger will go one on one with the Diamond Studd and in the main event Sting will go one on one with the man that helped in his beatdown tonight, Mr. Hughes. Also in action will be Johnny B. Badd and the World Tag Team Champions, Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton!
Matches signed for Superbrawl II:
World Heavyweight Title: Lex Luger© vs Sting
and just signed:
Grudge Match: Cactus Jack vs El Gigante
Plus:
Dustin Rhodes, Big Josh, and Ron Simmons vs. The Fabulous Freebirds and Steve Austin

WCW Main Event 2/9/92 Atlanta, GA: Center Stage Theatre Your host is Tony Schiavone
Tony Schiavone started the show off in the interview area by running down tonight’s card which would include Sting taking on the man that helped deliver a beating to him on Saturday Night, Mr. Hughes, the World Tag Team Champions, Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton, would also be in action. But before the opening match Diamond Dallas Page, the Diamond Studd, and Vinnie Vegas walked over to him apparently having something to say.
DDP said that Jushin Liger had agreed to wrestle the Diamond Studd in the opening match here tonight. He stated that Liger totally embarrassed him on Saturday Night, but tonight he would get his revenge. The Diamond Studd then took the microphone and said that there was one thing you don’t do and that is embarrassing the Diamond Mine. With that the three men headed down to ringside for the opening match.
Diamond Studd pinned Jushin Liger with the Diamond Death Drop in 0:07:36. Rating: ** 3/4
Liger had quite the size disadvantage going into this match, but it was amazing to see him not back up a step against the Diamond Studd. Instead Liger took it right to the Studd with some high flying offense that kept Studd struggling to keep up. In fact, it looked like Liger might get what might be considered an upset when he hit a moonsault bodyblock, but Studd was somehow able to kick out at two. The Studd was eventually able to get in some power based offense taking the wind out of Liger. However, Liger was able to fight back and eventually was able to hit a koppo kick on the Studd after he telegraphed a back bodydrop. The Studd went down to one knee as Liger went to bounce off the ropes and looked like he was going for another koppo kick when DDP out of nowhere smashed a chair across the back of Liger! It should have been an automatic disqualification, but at the same DDP had done that Vinnie Vegas had jumped on the ring apron and distracted the referee, Nick Patrick. Liger staggered forward, and the Studd was able to to regain his composure long enough to lift Liger up and drop him with the Diamond Death Drop for the three count.
After the match DDP and Vegas entered the ring and really went to work on Liger. The Diamond Studd soon joined in and eventually Liger was left a beaten and broken man. DDP was given a microphone and shouted out that Ricky Steamboat better be watching because this is what happens when you mess with the Diamond Mine! He said that this Saturday Night will be the start of his rise to the top of WCW when he becomes the number one contender for the United States Title! The crowd started to laugh at DDP’s promise before he yelled at them to shut up! DDP is taking this chance very seriously at Saturday Night, so Ricky Steamboat better be prepared for a challenge.
Johnny B. Badd pinned Rip Rogers with the Tutti Frutti in 0:04:20. Rating: ** 1/2
Non-Title Match: Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton defeated Danny Poston and TC Carter when A. Anderson pinned Carter with the DDT in 0:05:07. Rating: ** 1/2
Arn Anderson, Bobby Eaton, and Paul E. Dangerously joined Tony Schiavone on the interview stage after their match. The World Tag Team Champions said it was really starting to get annoying how everybody always comes up to them and asks why they are afraid to defend the tag titles against the Steiner Brothers. Everybody always asks why they won’t give the best tag team of the ‘90s a shot? Anderson said it was time to make one thing clear and that was that they were sick of being told that the Steiners were this magnificent team that could win the straps if only given a shot. Eaton said that they have finally had enough of this crap, and they were going to shut up the Steiners and the fans for good. They said that they were going to give the Steiners their match at Superbrawl, and they would finally show the entire world that they were going to be the team of the ’90 and not two guys that probably didn’t have a combined IQ of 60.
We went to WCW Headquarters where Eric Bischoff was to announce this week’s WCW Top Ten.
10. Diamond Studd 9. Ron Simmons 8. Big Van Vader 7. El Gigante 6. Cactus Jack 5. Dustin Rhodes 4. Steve Austin 3. Ricky Steamboat 2. Rick Rude 1. Sting Champion: Lex Luger
Eric Bischoff also made sure to make mention to not miss this Saturday Night as he will be heading out this week to talk to Barry Windham at his home. He also pulled out a manila envelope from under his desk and said that Kip Allen Frey, the Executive VP of WCW, told him to bring this with him to Sweetwater, Texas. Bischoff said he was unsure what was actually in the envelope, but he was told that Barry Windham would open it this Saturday during his interview. This was a nice segue way into the next match as the man that put Windham on the shelf twice now would be in action.
Larry Zbyszko pinned Mike Fever with the Brain Buster in 0:04:20. Rating: ** 1/4
Larry Zbyszko mocked Barry Windham throughout his match here tonight. Every time “the Cruncher” would deliver a right hand he would shake it like it was hurt before laughing. The crowd quickly became aware of what he was doing and really let him have it. This didn’t seem to bother Larry too much as he was able to quickly put away his opponent here tonight. After the match Larry made a point to stomp on the hand of Fever before leaving the ring. It looked like Mike Fever was in quite a bit of pain as the referee checked up on him and his hand.
Brad Armstrong pinned Chuck Coates with the Side Russian Legsweep in 0:04:41. Rating: ** 1/2
Sting made Mr. Hughes submit to the Scorpion Deathlock in 0:06:51. Rating: *
Sting came out a house of fire here tonight. He was looking for a measure of revenge for the attack that he suffered at the hands of Lex Luger, Mr. Hughes, and Harley Race on Saturday Night. Sting really took it to the big man here tonight, and even Harley Race at ringside seemed surprised by the intensity that Sting showed. Mr. Hughes was finally get a slight upper hand when Sting went for his Stinger Splash, but Harley Race got up on the ring apron and pushed Mr. Hughes out of the way. Sting smashed into the turnbuckles chest first, and it looked like he was rather shaken up. From there Hughes went to work on trying to dismantle the number one contender for the World Heavyweight Title. After a minute or so of clubbing him to the mat Mr. Hughes was able to whip Sting into the ropes and hit his Spinning Side Slam!! Mr. Hughes covered him, but Sting somehow got his shoulder up at the very last millisecond. Mr. Hughes got to his feet and apparently thought he had won the match. The same can be said for Harley Race who entered the ring and raised Hughes’ hand. They didn’t even see Sting slowly getting to his feet behind them. Sting nailed Race with a dropkick from behind that sent Race flying through the ropes and back to the outside. Hughes turned around, but was quickly taken to the mat with a double leg takedown by Sting, and from there Sting wasted no time in wrapping Hughes’ legs up and turning him over in the Scorpion Deathlock! Mr. Hughes was in the middle of the ring, and he had no choice but to submit.
Sting hollered out to the crowd in celebration, and the crowd gave him a huge ovation. This was a big win for Sting heading into Superbrawl on March 1st. Not only did he get a victory over one of his attackers from Saturday Night, but he showed a great amount of resiliency in this hard fought match.
Card rating: ** ¼
WCW Hotline:
Sting comes away with a huge win here tonight. Every day draws us closer to Superbrawl II, and Sting is just chomping at the bit to get his hands on Lex Luger.
It has been signed, Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton will be defending their World Tag Team Titles against the Steiner Brothers! This should be an epic encounter between four of the top tag team specialists to ever compete in WCW.
Jushin Liger took a real beating after his match here tonight, but it appeared to be mostly a few bruises and maybe a cracked rib. DDP did get some revenge when he clobbered Liger with a chair allowing the Diamond Studd to get the three count. And not only that, but he let Steamboat know he wasn’t going to be any push over this Saturday Night. The question is, will he have the Diamond Studd and Vinnie Vegas by his side? My bet would be yes.
So make sure not to miss this Saturday Night as Ricky Steamboat goes for the number one contendership for the US Title against Diamond Dallas Page, Big Van Vader will go one on one with Marcus Alexander Bagwell, Steve Austin will defend his Television Title against Ron Simmons, and Brian Pillman will be in action as well plus much more. Not only that, but Eric Bischoff will have his sit down interview with Barry Windham, and the question of what papers are in that manila envelope that Bischoff is taking to Sweetwater, Texas with him will be answered.

Clash of the Champions XVIII January 21, 1992 Topeka, Kansas Your hosts are Tony Schiavone and Jim RossRight after the opening credits Barry Windham was seen showing up in a pick-up truck. The Greatest Night in the History of our sport!! Good, Steiners should win. A tag team should always beat two singles guy. Was that an actual Clash match? Sure seemed random. Fire Bischoff! Morton's a deadbeat anyway. Two things: 1. I approve of Gigante vs Cactus. 2. Your TNM is broken, because Van Hammer was in a match with positive stars. YES! Where the crap was Ron Simmons? I should say this puts the Freebirds ahead of anyone else for a US Tag Team Title match. Should have been more of a squash, IMHO. Legitimacy! That's a nice top ten right there. Dangerous Alliance eats a loss! There is no way that match should have been ranked lower than Cactus-Hammer. Don't mess with Big Josh! Good ending, faces go over, heels get their heat in and then powder when the Babys hit the ring. [/b] The Fabulous Freebirds are already trying to contact new Executive VP, Kip Frey, and get a match signed to compete with Big Josh and Ron Simmons, the new US Tag Team Champions. Their claim is that they beat Big Josh and that should immediately put them in line for a shot at the titles.[/quote]

WCW Saturday Night 1/25/92 Atlanta, GA: Center Stage Theatre Your host is Jim RossJim Ross started the show off by announcing that tonight would be Lex Luger’s first World Heavyweight Title defense in a little under a month’s time as he would be defending against Flyin’ Brian. Considering this is pre-steel forearm Luger, Luger vs Pillman could be tremendous. I always like it when the TV champion takes pride in being the TV champion. [/b] In a surprising announcement, it was revealed that Larry Zbyszko requested a match with Barry Windham for next week! That comes as quite the surprise since we all know how badly Windham wants to get his hands on the Cruncher. Once Barry Windham was contacted he wasted no time in agreeing to the match which will main event next week’s Saturday Night.[/quote] For next week! Oooh...

Reply extravaganza! I go from 9 messages in this thread to 15 out of nowhere! A few things: I had downloaded the 1992 WCW Roster from TNM UK, and apparently Luger's workrate was set at 50. That definitely isn't right for that time period. I bumped it up to 75, but thinking about even putting him at 80. Luger-Pillman definitely should have been at least a 3 star match. I'm trying to book 1992 WCW which was full of six man tags. Not only that, but after Superbrawl II I have 3 months until the next supercard. This way I can I have Freebirds vs Big Josh and Simmons and Rhodes vs Austin main event a Saturday Night so it isn't in the same thing for 3 months straight. Steamboat was pointing at Austin because ... dammit! I must have Austin on the mind. I know you have had to have seen the Cactus-Hammer match before. It actually ended up being around 3 stars, IMO. Sting did kick out of the Spinning Side Slam! Or as Schiavone would have called it, the Sidewalk Slam! That's not weak! The Taylor Made Men are bound for greatness...or maybe not. I'm kind of surprised that the Diamond Studd and Vinnie Vegas never teamed in WCW. I know Studd was a couple of months away from leaving WCW at the time of Vegas' debut, but still... Oh, and I'm pretty sure you are thinking of Randy Rose. As for what's in the envelope, nothing quite as exciting as Baby Doll pictures. Thanks for the replies. I'm now feeling the love.

You better be feeling the love.
Seriously, check Van Hammer's workrate. WHATEVER it is, Luger's at LEAST 20 points higher. But Luger did have some really good matches, IMHO, pre motorcycle accident.

Whoever did that roster set was really good at getting the right finishers and stuff, but not so great at their opinions on workrate and the like. Van Hammer was at 70, so I bumped him down to 60. Ric Flair was only at an 80 workrate.
Anyways, I guess that'll be my project for tonight, getting the workrates fixed.

WCW Saturday Night 2/15/92 Atlanta, GA: Center Stage Theatre Your host is Jim Ross
The show started off rather fast tonight as Jim Ross ran down the card, and he also announced that signed during the week was a Television Title defense for Steve Austin against big Ron Simmons which was up next. This would be a huge opportunity for Ron Simmons to capture his first singles title. Austin would definitely have his hands full with a guy much bigger and stronger than he is.
Steve Austin defeated Ron Simmons after a back suplex in 0:10:51. Rating: *** (Steve Austin retained the Television Title.) [Paul E. Dangerously interfered against Ron Simmons]
Ron Simmons was so close to dethroning the current Television Champion. He even hit his Powerslam, but Paul E. Dangerously was there to put Austin’s foot on the bottom rope right before the three count. This sent Simmons into an uproar. He grabbed Dangerously by his suit jacked and pulled him up on the apron, but in the confusion Dangerously tossed the dazed Austin his cell phone. The referee tried to get in between the manager and Simmons, and in the meantime Austin clobbered Ron with the phone! Austin threw the phone out of the ring and dropped an out on his feet Simmons with a back suplex. Austin quickly made the cover and another successful title defense for Austin was in the books. This gives Austin and the Fabulous Freebirds some momentum going into their six man tag with Simmons, Big Josh, and Dustin Rhodes.
Brian Pillman pinned Buddy Baker with the Springboard Clothesline in 0:04:09. Rating: **
After Brian Pillman’s rather easy win he walked over to Jim Ross on the interview stage. Jim Ross said that nobody could question Pillman’s courage after last week he ran into the ring and saved Johnny Gunn from Big Van Vader, but a lot of people are questioning Pillman’s intellect. Pillman said that people have always said he was too small, too little, wasn’t strong enough, but each and every time he has proven those people wrong. He mentioned that all through high school he out performed every football player there was and before long the NFL was knocking at his door. The Cincinnati Bengals saw his potential and signed him to compete at the top level. And when it came to the time when he turned to wrestling everybody said it once again, you’re too small, you’re too little…and he was. But that didn’t stop him from competing, and luckily, he met somebody named Sting who helped him through the rough times and helped in training him to become the competitor he is today. He said he was just extremely lucky to have guys like El Gigante and Sting looking out for him when he first got started in wrestling in case somebody wanted to take privileges with a rookie. Pillman said that after seeing Vader time and again abusing these guys that are new to WCW and are just competing for a shot to make it, seeing Vader destroy them, that it got to him. He saw himself, and he wasn’t going to let it happen anymore. He then said that Vader maybe big and bad, but he has made a career out of showing that it’s not how big you are, but you how hard you fight.
The Taylor Made Men (Terry Taylor and Tracey Smothers) defeated Jim Boss and TC Carter when T. Smothers pinned Carter after a DDT in 0:03:46. Rating: * 1/2
We then go to what appears to be a nicely outfitted family room. There was a fire going in the fireplace, and Barry Windham was sitting in the lazy boy beside it. Sitting close to him was Eric Bischoff. Bischoff and Windham exchanged pleasantries before the camera focused in on Windham’s right hand which was back in a full blown cast. Bischoff made mention of the cast, and Windham just smiled. Windham said his hand was reinjured in the attack a couple of weeks back, and the doctors were very pessimistic about Windham’s chances of ever recovering full hand strength. Bischoff then said that Kip Allen Frey had asked him to bring this envelope to him. Windham then surprised Bischoff by saying that it was him that had asked for the papers in the envelope. Windham opened the envelope and pulled out several papers and then got very serious. He said that Larry Zbyzsko and the Dangerous Alliance had once again tried to put him out to pasture, and this time it looked like they had succeeded. He said that WCW could not and would not allow him back into the ring. Eric Bischoff went to say how sorry he was, but Windham told him to hold off on wishing him luck because these papers would take care of everything.
Windham then put pen to paper and signed something (with his left hand which he obviously wasn’t use to as he fumbled with the pen). He flipped the page and then signed another page. Bischoff questioned him as to what he had just signed, and Windham said that he had contacted Kip Frey and told him what he was willing to do to get back in the ring. Mr. Frey was not very willing, but after Windham had threatened him with showing up at any and all WCW events to take out the Dangerous Alliance, even if it was outside the arena, that he had no choice. So the first contract was him signing off his rights to insurance or holding WCW responsible for anything that might happen to him in the ring. And the second was the only way he could get Frey to let him have the match he wanted at Superbawl. The second contract would be for an Unsanctioned Match against Larry Zbyszko! Eric Bischoff then, in trying to make sure he heard correctly, asked Windham if he knew that meant that anything and everything would be allowed? Windham said he would have it no other way. Windham then asked Zbyszko if he had the guts to face a one handed man?
Jim Ross seemed pretty upset when we back to the arena. He questioned Barry Windham’s decision and also Kip Frey in allowing himself to be pushed into letting Windham back into the ring when it was obvious he wasn’t ready.
PN News pinned Kip Abee with the Broken Record in 0:03:42. Rating: **
Big Van Vader pinned Marcus Alexander Bagwell with the Vader Bomb in 0:05:50. Rating: ***
Big Van Vader got his wish here tonight as he went one on one with Brian Pillman’s tag team partner, Marcus Alexander Bagwell. Jim Ross said that Bagwell had requested Pillman stay in the back during the match so he could prove himself here tonight. It ended up being a poor decision as Vader just demolished the youngster. It’s not that Bagwell didn’t deliver any offense; it was just mostly shrugged off. Still, Bagwell did put up more of a fight than most of Vader’s recent competitors. He even hit a missile dropkick that almost was enough to get a flash three count, but when Vader got up from that it was game over. A Vader Bomb moments later put an end to the match.
After the match Vader went right back to his old ways as he kept pummeling away at Bagwell. This time, however, Harley Race grabbed a microphone and started hollering for “Flyin’” Brian to come out and save his friend! Vader kept up the beating which included a rather vicious looking choke slam when the crowd erupted in cheers. Brian Pillman ran out with a chair in hand! Pillman slid into the ring and gently tossed it to Vader. Vader caught it and looked kind of confused when Pillman dropkicked the chair right into his face! Vader staggered backwards, and once again Pillman had knocked Vader to the outside! Pillman quickly grabbed Bagwell and got him out of there while Race screamed at Vader to get up. In moments Vader was back in the ring and yelling that he would break Pillman’s back.
The Steiner Brothers (Rick Steiner and Scott Steiner) defeated Joey Maggs and Larry Santo when R. Steiner pinned Santo after a belly-to-belly suplex in 0:04:30. Rating: ** ¾
The Steiner Brothers came away with an easy win here tonight. It was revealed that there have been numerous confrontations backstage among the Steiners and Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton that have to keep being separated by WCW staff and officials. The WCW Championship Committee announced that to let these four men release some of their frustrations that next week the Steiner Brothers would face Vinnie Vegas and the Diamond Studd, and Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton would go at it with Sting and Dustin Rhodes and, in a surprising announcement, that match would be for the World Heavyweight Tag Team Titles!
Larry Zbyszko came out to the the interview area along with Paul E. Dangerously. Zbyszko laughed at the earlier interview by Barry Windham by saying that he didn’t believe for a second that Windham could be serious. But just in case he was, did Windham really think that he would give up the chance to finally put an end to Windham’s career? And in an anything goes match? “The Cruncher” said he has no problem with an unsanctioned match, because that means no matter what he does to Windham, nobody can get on his case afterwards. It was after all, Barry, that wanted the match. Larry said that after he gets done with him, it won’t just be his hand in a cast. It’s going to be his entire body.
Before the main event could get started “Ravishing” Rick Rude’s entrance music came over the speakers and out stepped the United States Champion. Rude joined Jim Ross at the announcer’s table as he apparently would be giving color commentary for the match that would determine who he faces at Superbrawl. Diamond Dallas Page was out next, and he was accompanied by the Diamond Studd and Vinnie Vegas. With the ring surrounded by enemies, Ricky Steamboat would definitely have his hands full.
[#1 Contendership to the US Title]: Ricky Steamboat pinned Diamond Dallas Page with the Flying Cross Body Press in 0:07:45. Rating: ** 1/2 [Vinnie Vegas and the Diamond Studd interfered against Ricky Steamboat]
Diamond Dallas Page really surprised quite a few people here tonight by putting up one heck of a fight against Ricky Steamboat. Rick Rude was pretty clearly cheering on Page from the announcer’s table, and he even yelled out at the referee every time he thought there was a slow count involved when Page went for a pinfall on the Dragon. It was only a matter of time, of course, before Vinnie Vegas and the Diamond Studd got involved in the match. Steamboat looked like he might have been able to get the three count after he nailed DDP with a flying chop to the head off of the top rope, but Vegas jumped up on the ring apron. This got the attention of both the referee, Nick Patrick, and Ricky Steamboat. At the same time the crowd let loose some cheers as Jushin Liger and the Z-Man ran down the aisle! The Diamond Studd tried to cut them off, but he quickly got tangled up with Liger while the Z-Man ran around the other side and pulled Vegas off of the apron. Z-Man and Vegas started exchanging punches as DDP started yelling at them from inside the ring. Steamboat took this huge distraction to climb back up to the top rope. When DDP turned around, Steamboat sailed off with his Flying Cross Body Press! Rick Rude noticed too late what was going on and quickly tried to enter the ring, but he was too late as Patrick’s hand hit the mat for the third time.
Ricky Steamboat had won the right to face Rick Rude for the United States Title at Superbrawl! Steamboat didn’t get much chance to celebrate his win, however, as Rude quickly leveled him with a clothesline. Rude quickly followed that up by pulling him back up to his feet and dropping him with the Rude Awakening. Eventually Liger and Studd along with the Z-Man and Vegas rolled into the ring, but by this time DDP was back to his feet, and he was able to help his two stable mates in dropping the two young high flyers. The Diamond Mine and Rick Rude eventually left the ring with Steamboat, Z-Man, and Liger completely beaten on the mat to end the show. But one thing is for sure, Rude won’t be able to ambush Steamboat like that at Superbrawl and this match will be for the United States Title!
Card rating: ** ½
WCW Hotline:
So it’s a definite now, Ricky Steamboat will do battle with Rick Rude for the United States Title at Superbrawl! Steamboat has pinned Rude in a tag team match and also by surprise when wearing a mask. Can he do it one on one for the strap?
Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton will definitely have their hands full next week as they will be defending the straps against Sting and Dustin Rhodes. Sting and Rhodes are known to be very intense competitors, and with Sting getting ready for his World Heavyweight Title shot, he will be in the best condition possible. What happens if Sting and Rhodes take the Titles? Will Sting and Rhodes have to pull double duty?
The Steiner Brothers will also have their hands full with two men more than capable of matching them in strength in the Diamond Studd and Vinnie Vegas next week. This Saturday Night is going to be jam packed with action.
Also next week Lex Luger will defend his World Heavyweight Championship against PN News! What a big opportunity for the rapper as he has the chance to become the number one wrestler in the world.
Make sure to tune in also to the Main Event as in the main event Rick Rude defends his United States Title against Van Hammer, Johnny B. Badd will go one on one with Cactus Jack, and much more including Big Josh in singles action!

Nothing better than a 3 foot tall cell phone shot to the head to pick up a win.
Well, it was actually more of a waiver of rules and uhh...WRESTLING LOGIC~! For the win!
Hey, Pillman invented it first according to my circuit!
Did you really want to see 1992 DDP fighting Rick Rude for the US Title on PPV?

WCW Main Event 2/16/92 Atlanta, GA: Center Stage Theatre Your host is Tony Schiavone
Tony Schiavone started the show off by running down the card which would be headlined by a US Title defense as Rick Rude would be defending his championship against Van Hammer. Rick Rude has been in quite a bit of a rut lately with his recent interactions with Ricky Steamboat, but this would definitely be the way to get back on track with a successful title defense against Hammer, a man with a lot of promise. Schiavone also said that Sting and Dustin Rhodes were very excited to have been given the right to face the World Tag Team Champions on Saturday Night, and tonight they had requested a tag match to get warmed up. Schiavone said that one thing was clear and that was that Sting and Dustin Rhodes are taking this opportunity very seriously.
Cactus Jack pinned Johnny B. Badd with the Double Arm DDT in 0:09:22. Rating: **
This was quite the bout with Cactus Jack and Johnny B. Badd throwing caution to the wind. Both men took quite a few liberties with each other as Cactus tried to keep this as a brawl while Badd kept throwing out the high flying offense whenever he had the chance. Badd even came extremely close to hitting his Tutti Frutti punch, but Cactus was able to duck out of the way. Cactus then underhooked Badd and hit the Double Arm DDT out of nowhere. That was enough to get the three count, but Badd did put up a big fight.
After the match Tony Schiavone conducted an interview with Cactus Jack on the interview stage. Schiavone first congratulated Cactus on his win tonight, but Cactus cut him off. Cactus said that this wasn’t the win he wanted, he wanted to inflict pain and release the voices that keep bouncing around in his brain. Cactus did not get the release he needed, but he knew the man that would help him and that man was El Gigante! Cactus said that after Superbrawl he will have released the pain that keeps him awake at night, and unfortunately for him, it will be El Gigante that has to feel it.
Big Josh pinned Danny Deese with the Northern Exposure in 0:04:24. Rating: **
Big Josh was accompanied to the ring with Ron Simmons. Simmons then went over to the announcer’s table to join Tony Schiavone. Schiavone asked him why he was accompanying Big Josh to the ring for singles action. Simmons said he was just here to watch his partner’s back. He said he knew it was a dangerous position to be in, being champions, and he’s sick and tired of the Fabulous Freebirds mind games and also made mention that he wanted to get his hands on Steve Austin again too. He was just there to make sure Big Josh made it to Superbrawl at a hundred percent.
Ron Simmons and Big Josh seemed to have nothing to worry about, however, as Big Josh disposed of his opponent rather quickly, and nobody else made an appearance.
The next match was scheduled to be the Z-Man and Jushin Liger teaming up for the first time ever to get prepared for their big match at Superbrawl against the Diamond Studd and Vinnie Vegas. However, it was obvious something was wrong when the Z-Man came out alone, looking rather confused. The match started as a handi-cap match against Larry Santo and Chris Sullivan, but within seconds Marcus Alexander Bagwell ran out to help his friend.
Z-Man and Marcus Alexander Bagwell defeated Larry Santo and Chris Sullivan when Z-Man pinned Sullivan with the Flying Dropkick in 0:04:51. Rating: * 3/4 (Jushin Liger no-showed.)
After the match Z-Man and Bagwell shook hands and started talking, probably about Liger’s whereabouts. We soon found out what had happened as Liger stumbled through the entrance curtain and slowly started walking towards the ring. His mask had been slightly ripped, and he looked like he’d just been in the fight of his life. Then from right behind him came the Diamond Studd, Vinnie Vegas, and DDP. All three men of the Diamond Mine continued their apparent assault on Liger. It was obvious that all three men are still enraged with Liger’s victory over DDP, and Liger’s interference in DDP’s match with Ricky Steamboat.
All three men continued their beating of Liger in the aisle until Z-Man and Bagwell were able to join in to help their fallen friend. Things were once again looking like the three young high fliers might be overwhelmed when out came the Steiner Brothers to break things up! The Diamond Mine yelled threats at the Steiners as they backed up, but the Steiners seemed more concerned with checking on Liger’s health.
Larry Zbyszko made Rick Thames submit to a clawhold in 0:03:32. Rating: **
Larry Zbyszko added a new piece of attire to his wrestling gear. He walked out with a black glove on his right hand. It was just a couple of years ago that Barry Windham wore a very similar glove on his hand. Zbyszko wasted no time in putting away Rick Thames with the Brain Buster, but instead of going for the pinfall he applied the Claw! Once again, it was only a couple of years ago that Barry Windham had been using that maneuver to win matches. Thames was already in a great deal of pain, and it didn’t take very long at all before he was screaming that he submitted.
After the match Zbyszko walked over to the camera and spoke on his remorse that poor Barry Windham would never be able to apply that hold he use to love ever again. Larry walked over, grabbed Thames by the hand and repeatedly smashed it into the mat. All this time Larry was screaming that this is what Barry had in store for him at Superbrawl!
We went to WCW Headquarters where Eric Bischoff announced this week’s WCW Top Ten. He did say that there were quite a few changes with Big Van Vader jumping up a couple of spots, and two new names were on the top ten.
10. Brian Pillman (-) 9. PN News (-) 8. El Gigante (7) 7. Cactus Jack (6) 6. Big Van Vader (8) 5. Dustin Rhodes (5) 4. Steve Austin (4) 3. Ricky Steamboat (3) 2. Rick Rude (2) 1. Sting (1) Champion: Lex Luger
Dustin Rhodes and Sting defeated Richard Morton and The Italian Stallion when D. Rhodes pinned Stallion with the Bulldog in 0:05:25. Rating: ** ½
During the the match the Steiner Brothers cut an insert promo. Scott acknowledged that there was a shot of Sting and Rhodes winning the titles on Saturday Night, but that it didn’t really matter because those straps were coming home to the Steiner Brothers at Superbrawl. Rick said that even if Eaton and Anderson lost their Titles on Saturday that the Steiners would not forget them and they’d still be beating their heads in at Superbrawl, if it’s in a match or not.
Dustin Rhodes and Sting really showed some nice tag team work in their match here tonight. Morton and Stallion really didn’t have much of a chance as Rhodes and Sting kept them both off guard with not only their power but their speed as well. Halfway through the match Paul E. Dangerously stepped out and watched on as Rhodes and Sting fought their way to victory. Paul E. quickly headed to the back after the bell was rung as Rhodes and Sting celebrated in the ring.
Rick Rude pinned Van Hammer with the Rude Awakening in 0:06:58. Rating: ** 1/2 (Rick Rude retained the United States Heavyweight Title.)
“Ravishing” Rick Rude came away with a very impressive win here tonight. Rude needed this in preparation for his Title defense against Ricky Steamboat. Van Hammer was able to hold his own for a short while, but Rude’s experience and power offense was enough to put the Heavy Metal guitarist down on the mat. Rude made some insulting comments towards Steamboat after the match as he was handed his Title. He pushed the Title into the camera lens and told Steamboat that this was as close as he’d ever get to his championship gold.
Card rating: ** ½
WCW Hotline:
We had a crazy night here on the Main Event, and things are going to get even crazier this coming Saturday.
Rick Rude had a successful US Title defense against Van Hammer tonight, and this should go a long ways in building up some momentum for his match against Ricky Steamboat at Superbrawl II.
What a despicable group the Diamond Mine are. They seem to get a lot of joy out of attacking the smaller Jushin Liger when it’s three on one. Luckily the Steiner Brothers were there tonight to give Marcus Bagwell and the Z-Man a hand in saving Liger. This, of course, only caused the Diamond Studd, Vinnie Vegas, and DDP to become rather upset with the Steiners. They are now promising that this Saturday they will teach them a lesson in minding their own business.
Cactus Jack is one crazy individual. He seems to think the only way to help him with his mental illness is to cause pain to his competitors. And the one man he seems to think that can help him with releasing all of that sickness is El Gigante. I know El Gigante is one big, bad, tough guy, but Cactus Jack might just be crazy enough to upset the “Friendly Giant.”
Sting and Dustin Rhodes came away with a win here tonight, and they look definitely ready for their World Tag Team Titles match on Saturday. Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton are definitely in for a fight.
Not only that, but the World Heavyweight Champion, Sting’s opponent at Superbrawl, Lex Luger, will be in action as he defends his Title against the #9 ranked contender for his Title in PN News. PN News has been rather successful in his short run in WCW, but can he take the sport’s biggest prize?
Be sure to tune in on Saturday Night!
