Earlier this year, I finally got an iPod and got my music collection loaded on it so I could stop listening to the radio.
But it raises a question: while I avoid hearing the same song 5 times per day and avoid hearing the same terribly commercials 10 times per day, how am I supposed to find out when new music comes out that is actually good?

You are assuming that ANY new music would be good.
Actually, I'm not a music snob, but I really haven't heard anything released lately that makes me want to listen to it over and over again. I guess now I listen strictly to policital talk radio now because of it.

Ya know, I just listen to Pandora.
I don't get the exact song I want on demand, but I don't get that on the radio, either...and I can feed it my preferences so I usually wind up hearing stuff I didn't KNOW I like.

Last.FM for me (Straight off the site on the computer, or via app on my Android phone)

I have a Last.FM account but haven't done much with it.
I like Pandora, but it seems like at least 75% of the stuff it plays are bands and songs I already know and much of what it plays that I'm unfamiliar with I either don't like or can't find to see if I like more of it. It has clued me in on a few bands albiet mostly older ones (Saxon).
I was checking the local radio station playlist and the Billboard Rock Top 40 and was appalled to find that nearly all the music on their lists were the same songs said local radio station was playing 2 months ago when I was last listening to the radio! Ugh.
I generally stay away from pop/Top40 stations, but the alternative rock station has lead me to some good stuff over the years. Anberlin and Jet most noteably, but also various singles by other bands. Foo Fighters have yet to release an album I like but have yet to release a single I dislike; some with U2.

This may sound strange BUT....
Over the last couple of years, I've found various sports games have had some interesting soundtracks that generally feature new/unknown bands that have some really good stuff.
Example: Madden '07 (I think it was '07) had Jet's "Are you gonna be my girl" a couple of MONTHS before it was on the local radio stations.
More recently, Cage the Elephant's "No Rest for the Wicked" was used as the trailer music for Borderlands a bit before it was on the radio. UFC 2009 had Hollywood Undead, Forza 2 had all kinds of interesting music.
Then again, there's Fallout 3... Great songs, none new ;->
