Kevin Sullivan expresses interest in booking TNA » Reported by Adam Martin of Wrestleview.com » On July 4, 2010 at 3:08 pm
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kevin Sullivan reportedly spoke with TNA President Dixie Carter while she was in New Jersey a few weeks ago expressing interest in getting back into wrestling and showing interest as a booker for TNA. He even spoke with some in the company he knows well and said he already has an entire year booked out. Whether or not TNA will show interest in making an offer remains to be seen, especially when they are aggressively going after Paul Heyman.
Source: The Wrestling Observer Newsletter ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Soooo, just who will break first here, huh?

Has Sullivan ever booked a company successfully?
Although, I then ask, has Heyman?

both men have booked with great success before... Heyman's problem is that while he's a genius with making lemonade out of whatever rotten lemons he finds, he couldn't financially keep up with how fast he expanded his company. Sullivan has always had a brilliant mind & great ideas, he just hadsomeone water them down in WCW & turn him into a cartoon.

Although, I then ask, has Heyman? Regardless of what you think of ECW, didn't he do a good stint as a WWE booker until getting fired for disagreeing with Stephie?

Yeah, I never considered ECW to be genius. It was a cult success that influenced WCW and WWF in the 90s (and not necessarily in the best ways) and spawned a ton imitators that did more harm than good for pro wrestling.
With Sullivan, other than booking his wife to leave him, I can't remember what was his doing in WCW and what wasn't...he may have had some great stuff, but with all the constant regime changes, I can't remember back anymore.

He booked Smackdown for a while when he was managing Brock/Big Show/Angle.
Granted, I liked Smackdown then, but I'm not sure that putting Finlay/Benoit/Eddie/Rey/etc together every week in matches really is "genius." Just kinda, you know, duh?

Heyman's done good booking (Raven using Sandman's kid, The Dudley's, RVD, Al Snow, Chris Candido, Lance Storm, etc)
He may not book the best STORIES (though he's done some doozies), but he's certainly shown he knows how to book PERFORMERS.

Eh, Heyman had some pretty interesting storylines when ECW TV was running at 3AM after the World Hanggliding Association on some 5th tier sports network. He didn't have to worry about what a lot of advertisers and such thought, so it's pretty easy to run whatever you want, especially when you're the one in charge. That's why he had trouble when he got onto TNN.

He had trouble with TNN because TNN still had remenants of The Nashville Network (IE: Grand Ole Opry fans, Bass Fishing fans, Sunday Morning Sermons, etc) running things.
Obviously, current-day Spike is a bit more.... Open to the ECW style of things (Seeing as they've apparently OK'd TNA being more hardcore than they are now... Which tends to including unprotected chairshots and open blading :-P)

I like the fact that Kevin Sullivan has booked out so far in advance. That would be a welcomed change from the current status of wrestling. Also, having a former wrestler as a booker versus having a writer would be another welcomed change.

Having a *BOOKER* as a booker instead of a writer is a welcome change (I consider Sullivan and Heyman bookers, for the record)

I don't know. Bookers don't book keg carrying contests so I'm partial to writers. It's very compelling.

If Heyman comes in, will we get the exact same Three Way Dance match every week, like we did on ECW?

I remember watching some old ECW tapes and the Eliminators were in a Tables and Ladders match against...someone, I don't remember who. This was most notable because it was a "gimmick" match exactly like 95% of the other matches.

If you guys don't be careful you'll bring out the 12 year old boy in grown-up ECW fans and they might start... chanting nasty things @ u.

Heyman's done good booking (Raven using Sandman's kid) I don't consider exploiting innocent children as "good" booking

It generated total heat on Raven, it pushed Sandman from a total heel/occasional tweener into full-on face, it got the crowd hot....
In terms of pure "Why we book matches", it hit everything perfectly.
Was it in bad taste? Sure. Did it lead to the kid offing himself down the road? No. In fact, he's had wrestling feuds with his dad and Raven already in his career :-P Should it be re-done again verbatem? Not at all.
To me, the worst part of the angle was the bit that didn't get televised, because Kurt Angle threatened to sue ECW: The Sandman's Crucifiction. Of course, Angle proved himself to be a hypocritical "buisnessman" later on with the 'Taker's crucifiction angle....
That aside, though, look at the Dudleys. Started off not even including DeVon and Bubba Ray, and ended up with the most decorated tag team in history.
Jerry Lawler's invasion of ECW (after the ECW invasion of Raw) was pure gold: Dreamer *FINALLY* gets a pinfall win over Raven, and before he can celebrate... Lights go out and come back on, and he's being flattened by RVD... And Sabu.... And Lawler. Fast forward a couple of weeks, and there's "Jimmy Cornette" (as New Jack put it). Again, got the crowd TOTALLY hot, got them coming back for more. Good Booking.
Hell, even Mikey Whipwreck's rise to, er, glory(?) was a damn fun ride.
Is Heyman the greatest booker of all time? Nah. Was he the best booker of the 90s? Probably. Did he know how to write around what can best be described as a mediocre talent pool? Absolutely.

I think, if I had to choose, I would take a million Sandman/Sandman's kid/Raven type of storylines over one Vince Russo storyline of anything he could come up with. Even though he has become a Born Again Christian (as I am) I still wouldn't trust him to write a storyline for a broomstick.
