Is there any way for TNM to handle playing .m4a iTunes files?

Convert them to mp3.

That's not something I'm entirely sure how to do.

I don't know anything about iTunes, but I did a quick search on converting .m4a to .mp3 ... I found this which apparently converts them to .wav files. Don't know if it works or not.
Why not use iTunes, provided you have the file there (which is very likely)?
It's free, and if anyone knows the exact format of m4a files, it's Apple
In iTunes do this:
- In Edit/Preferences, select the Advanced tab. - Under "Import Using", select "WAV Encoder" - Click OK to leave preferences
In your Music library, right-click the tune, and select "Convert Selection to WAV". iTunes will now create the WAV file (and add it to your library).
Voila! It's free, and you have it right at your fingertips
You can obviously create other formats by making other selections in the Preferences menu.
