Does it work?
I have been thinking of starting using tnm again (can't find my codes, prob just buy again)
but been reading the forums and wondered if it worked on vista or if I need something else.

I haven't had a problem and I run mine on a vista system. I actually run mine on a macbook pro with parallels. Vista is the system I use on "the other side" of my mac.

I'm running TNM7 on Vista. Only problem I've had are a few crashes during the deleting of moves/dives so definitely make Backups regularly (the crashes severely corrupt the database). Plus there's DOSbox if you need it to create a faux-DOS for TNM to run more stable in; I've had zero crashes in that.

I just downloaded the trial version and I got this error
"the version of this file is not compatible with the windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program"

64-bit windows have more issues with DOS-based programs than the normal 32-bit. DOSbox is definitely the way to go for you.
