11/16/85 - GCW Superstars (TAPED: 10/22/85) LOCATION: Mid-Hudson Civic Center - Poughkeepsie, NY
JACK TUNNEY MAKES A STATEMENT ABOUT TONIGHT'S SHOW
Before we even got to this week's Superstars, we got a pre-recorded video from GCW President Jack Tunney. Tunney mentioned how excited everyone at GCW was about the big show in Los Angeles. He did have to address one thing, and that had to do with the World Title match between King Kong Bundy & Bob Backlund. Tunney said there was obviously a lot at stake in this huge rematch tonight, and he wanted to make sure nothing interfered with that. Based on the comments of one Rick Martel last week, Tunney had no choice but to declare the following: if Martel got himself involved in any way during tonight's World Title match, Martel would no longer be eligible to compete for that championship. Tunney acknowledged it may not be the most popular decision, but the sanctity of the World championship must be protected at all costs. He concluded by telling the fans he hopes they enjoy tonight's show.
We cut to Gorilla Monsoon & Mark Niemiller in the arena, and Niemiller immediately went into how he normally doesn't agree with anything Tunney says, but that he felt this was the absolute right decision. Monsoon was a little less onboard, saying that with everything the Heenan Family, and particularly King Kong Bundy had done to him, could you blame Martel for wanting to get involved? Niemiller countered by saying Martel was a loose cannon and this is exactly what he deserved, but now we'll see if he can restrain himself tonight. Monsoon changed gears and said we'd have plenty more on the big Los Angeles show on today's broadcast. Also on today's Superstars, we have Arn Anderson in action, as well as the Rock 'N Roll Express. But first up, it's Dynamite Kid vs. Bret Hart!
MATCH #1 Dynamite Kid (w/ "Captain" Lou Albano) vs. Bret "Hitman" Hart (w/ Jimmy Hart)
Despite what you may think of the new attitude of the British Bulldogs, you can't deny what they can do in the ring. After all, they did win the grueling Grand 16 tournament. This was singles action though, and that bad attitude of Dynamite Kid bled into this match as well against the technical wrestling specialist, Bret "Hitman" Hart. Monsoon hinted at the history these two have before coming to GCW, and the familiarity these two showed in the ring was a good indication of that. The Bulldogs did an insert promo during the match saying that tonight they would prove once and for all that not only are they the best team in wrestling, but that they are far superior to the Rock 'N Roll Express in every way. Tempers were flaring during this singles match as the match became a case of "can you top this?" In the end, the true colors of Dynamite Kid continued to show when he caught Hart in a backslide, put his feet on the ropes, and had his hand raised in victory.
Dynamite Kid pinned Bret Hart after a backslide in 0:10:12. Rating: **** 1/4
He's not going to be able to win the cage match like that tonight. I hope Dynamite is ready for a fight, because the Rock 'N Roll Express sure will be.
MATCH #2 "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson vs. Steve Gatorwolf
I'm not why Arn Anderson was in such a bad mood, but he sure was. The Enforcer is a pretty no nonsense guy in most cases anyway, but today he had a particularly large chip on his shoulder. Steve Gatorwolf didn't even have enough time to hear his name announced before Anderson was all over him. Not long in, Anderson plants him with a DDT and the match was over.
Arn Anderson pinned Steve Gatorwolf after a DDT in 0:00:38. Rating: *
LIVE EVENT REPORT WITH GENE OKERLUND
Usually, "Mean" Gene Okerlund does his Live Event Report from the GCW Studios in New York. Today, due to the long commute, he was already in sunny Los Angeles, CA! Okerlund was pumped as tonight is a big night for Global Championship Wrestling as they visit the Los Angeles Sports Arena, the home for Super Cade II! The main event tonight is big, as it will be the first World Title defense for new champion, King Kong Bundy, putting the title on the line against the man he beat (i.e. stole) for the title, Bob Backlund. We cut to an interview with King Kong Bundy & manager Bobby Heenan. Heenan talked about how this master plan has been in the works for some time and at Grand 16, it went off flawlessly. And now, the plan keeps on working to perfection as thanks to Rick Martel's hot temper, he wouldn't be allowed to get involved or he would never get a title shot for the rest of his career! Heenan concluded by saying that with Bundy's brawn and his brain, the Heenan Family was unstoppable.
Other members of the Heenan Family would be in action as well with Eddie Gilbert trying to avenge his embarrassing dance contest loss to Junkyard Dog, this time in a real wrestling match, and Big John Studd wrestling for the first time in GCW against Barry Windham. Windham has a lot of reason to want payback against Studd, and the City of Angels will be his first shot to get it.
The other huge match will be the steel cage match pitting fierce rivals the Rock 'N Roll Express & the British Bulldogs against one another. This rivalry has spanned for months now, and just recently took an incredibly violent turn with the Bulldogs showing their true colors en route to winning Grand 16. The Express put their tag title rematch on hold to get their hands on the Bulldogs in a cage and hopefully end this feud once and for all.
Okerlund ran down the rest of the card, which includes Dusty Rhodes & Stan Hansen writing the next chapter in their storied rivalry, Ted DiBiase defending the Intercontinental Title against Dino Bravo, a rare inter-promotional match with Tito Santana & Hector Guerrero defending the WWA Tag Team Titles against GCW superstars The Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff, and in what is sure to be a bloodbath, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan taking on Bad News Brown in a Harlem Streetfight. Cut to a promo with Brown where he said that Duggan was nothing but a dumb punk kid and that he didn't know what he was getting into in this Harlem streetfight. Brown said he was going to bloody Duggan beyond the point of recognition. Now a promo from Duggan. Duggan said he knew this wasn't his element, and that a Harlem Streetfight was Bad News' specialty. Hacksaw knew he was going to get hurt tonight - but what people might not know is that Brown was going to get hurt too. Hacksaw said Bad News was nothing more than a jerk, and sometimes you have to punch a jerk in the mouth to shut him up, which is exactly what he intended to do in Los Angeles.
MATCH #3 The Rock 'N Roll Express vs. Mr. X/The Menace
With the British Bulldogs still in the building after Dynamite Kid's match in the opener, we knew with the Rock 'N Roll Express in action now, there was the potential for a confrontation. It wasn't long after this match began that the Bulldogs & Albano came out and stood halfway down the aisle, watching intently as Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson did their thing in the ring. Morton & Gibson were clearly distracted, but as former 2-time tag team champions, they overcame those distractions and picked up a win.
The Rock 'N Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson) defeated Mr. X and The Menace when R. Gibson pinned The Menace after a crucifix in 0:03:24. Rating: DUD
As you would expect, Morton & Gibson were back on their guard and turned their attentions to the aisle. Dynamite Kid & Davey Boy Smith took this as an invitation to fight, apparently, and rushed the ring! Morton & Gibson met them coming in, and we had a donnybrook on our hands! The show went off the air with the two teams exchanging blows and Monsoon reminding everyone to get their tickets for the Los Angeles show right away!

Unpopular as the decision might be, Tunney running things by the middle as a sort of a neutral power figure brings legitimacy to the sport/federation.
Excellent opening match. You really have an awesome tag team division, as witnessed by the Grand 16.
Short program tonight? Looking forward to the LA show.

Program was short because there were matches involving Martel and Atlas on this show. Martel was hurt on this taping, but he wasn't written as injured until after the fact since this hadn't aired yet. Atlas was fine for this show, which was taped before Grand 16, where Atlas suffered a serious injury. So obviously, I couldn't air a match with him wrestling here. Just bad luck with how the schedule worked.

Ah..kudos for sticking with the tapings model, even though it is probably both infuriating at times and confusing to remember

Tunney made a good decision in fairness to the World Title, but man, the people have to be furious about it. Then Jack comes off kinda sounding like a dick by hoping the enjoy tonight's show AFTER pissing them off.
Dynamite vs. Bret will always deliver. Bret is such a good hand to have around this early in his career. He can be counted on to elevate any guy he's in the ring with without taking any hits to his crediblity by losing.
If Steve Gatorwolf has worked in the Universe before, I sure as hell can't believe I don't remember. Gatorwolf sounds like a Wrestlecrap gimmick in the making. But he's probably an indian, so I shouldn't poke much fun at it.
Many thanks for Okerlund's Live Event Report. It's been so long that I needed a bit of a refresher. And wow, I'm really looking forward to the LA show! It's looking like one of your bigger shows in awhile, or maybe I'm just exciting to see the ball rolling again.
So, the plan is to leave me hanging with a donnybrook in an attempt to get me to buy a ticket to tonight's show? SOLD!

And the anticipation of the show in LA has grown even more. Can't wait to see how/if Martel responds to Tunney's threats.
The Bulldogs have so much momentum behind them right now that they are nearly unstoppable. I could see either of them actually making a singles run earlier than they did in real life due to their winning streak.
Love me some Arn Anderson.
Great Live Event Report to recap some of the feuds in case we had forgotten a few details. The show is looking really good.
Introducing jobbers like Mr. X and The Menace are a nice touch to jobbers from the time period.
Can't wait for LA!

Atlas was fine for this show, which was taped before Grand 16, where Atlas suffered a serious injury. So obviously, I couldn't air a match with him wrestling here. Just bad luck with how the schedule worked. There were times in the WWF (early '92) where Marty Jannetty competed after being thrown through the glass window by Shawn Michaels. They would just run a little header over the match stating that this match took place before the incident. Of course, this would throw the fact that the show is taped right in the audience's face, something you may not be all for. I think the NWF is a little more "okay" with the fans knowing that the matches on Worldwide are taped before the actual airing. Still, it can get confusing with all the tapings and house shows all mixed in together.

1/16/85 - Los Angeles Sports Arena - Los Angeles, CA
We got a special treat to kick off this show in Los Angeles as GCW favorite CYNDI LAUPER was in attendance, and did us the honor of singing the national anthem. After she was finished, she was stopped getting out of the ring by THE FOREIGN LEGION, which earned a huge chorus of boos. Blassie grabbed the microphone and said Lauper was a horrible singer, and it wasn't fair that only the United States national anthem was sung. He then told everyone to get up on their feet and show some respect for Nikolai Volkoff, who would be singing the Russian national anthem. He didn't get very far before the Foreign Legion's opponents for the night, HECTOR GUERRERO & TITO SANTANA, showed up to put an end to this. Blassie yelled at them for interrupting, but Guerrero & Santana responded with stereo dropkicks on Volkoff & The Iron Sheik to get this match underway!
MATCH #1 WWA Tag Team Title Match Hector Guerrero/Tito Santana (c) vs. Nikolai Volkoff/The Iron Sheik (w/ "Classy" Freddie Blassie)
Hector Guerrero & Tito Santana have both spent some time in GCW in the past, but currently they are the reigning and defending WWA Tag Team champions. WWA is an ever-growing promotion on the west coast, and after Guerrero & Santana made a great showing in the Grand 16 tournament, beating Volkoff & Sheik, they were challenged by Blassie to put their titles on the line here in LA. Volkoff & Sheik were so set on avenging what they declared an embarrassing loss from the PPV that they were going into this match recklessly. The speedy Guerrero & Santana were always a step ahead - that is, until Blassie smashed Guerrero in the ribs with his cane for the disqualification.
Hector Guerrero and Tito Santana defeated The Foreign Legion (Nikolai Volkoff and The Iron Sheik) when H. Guerrero defeated Volkoff by disqualification in 0:05:01. Rating: * (Hector Guerrero and Tito Santana retained the WWA Tag Team Titles.)
With Guerrero hurt, Santana came in to try to save, but he was soon overcome by the numbers game. It wasn't until THE MEXICAN EAGLES rushed down that the tide turned. Hector is of course Chavo Guerrero's brother, so there was no way he was going to sit back and let this happen. When Santana & Hector got back to their feet, the numbers were now on their side and it did not take long to dispatch of the Foreign Legion. The two fan favorite teams celebrated in the ring to end the segment.
MATCH #2 Intercontinental Title Match Ted DiBiase (c) vs. "Canadian Strongman" Dino Bravo (w/ Jimmy Hart)
This was the first Intercontinental Title defense for new champion Ted DiBiase, and it was going to be a tough one. He had been prepared to give a rematch to the former champion, Tony Atlas, but after Atlas suffered a serious injury at Grand 16, Dino Bravo was named as his replacement opponent. Bravo is widely considered to be the greatest tag team wrestler in GCW history, but he hasn't quite gotten to the next level in his singles career. A title win here would change that. Bravo came out strong, using his clear power edge to toss DiBiase around. Problem was, instead of following up on his big moves, he would take the time to pose and flex for the crowd, letting them know how strong he was. That's not a mistake you want to make with DiBiase. This gave him plenty of time to shake the cobwebs out and string together some offense, and once DiBiase gets on a roll, he's hard to stop. That being said, Bravo had one last good chance to win, getting DiBiase up for the Side Suplex. DiBiase fought out though, ducked Bravo's clothesline, and got on the Cobra Clutch! Bravo fought, but the harder he did so, the faster his energy was zapped, leading to him passing out and DiBiase's first title defense being a successful one.
Ted DiBiase defeated Dino Bravo when Dino Bravo passed out in the Cobra Clutch in 0:06:48. Rating: ** 1/2 (Ted DiBiase retained the GCW Intercontinental Title.)
MATCH #3 Junkyard Dog vs. "Hot Stuff" Eddie Gilbert (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan)
Eddie Gilbert was still sporting his ridiculous dance attire, thinking he was going to to a little juking and jiving tonight in his match with Junkyard Dog. I hope after tonight. Gilbert knows it's time to give it a rest. Not only was JYD embarrassing him in the dance department, he also embarrassed him in the ring tonight. Hot Stuff was dead set on getting his dance on, and instead all he got was a huge headbutt and a pinfall loss. JYD took the time after the match to show the fans some real dancing, much to their delight. Hopefully Gilbert's days as a dancer are over.
Junkyard Dog pinned Eddie Gilbert after a headbutt in 0:03:30. Rating: * 1/2
MATCH #4 Harlem Streetfight "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan vs. Bad News Brown
Duggan & Brown came out dressed in jeans and t-shirts, as a Harlem Streetfight is "come dressed as you are." Brown was also wearing thick boots while Hacksaw had his fists taped up. We had no false thoughts that this was going to be anything but a brawl. You could count on one hand the amount of wrestling moves each man performed during this match, but that didn't make this any less intense. Most guys would have been knocked out after just one of the punches these two were throwing, let alone the several they were smashing each other with. The match spilled to the floor, which is where Bad News' streetfighting past really started to shine. Duggan was more than willing to throw bones with Brown, but in a streetfight, Bad News is diabolical. Brown used whatever wasn't tied down, including a steel chair, the guardrail, and choking Duggan with the microphone wire. Duggan fought his guts out, but in this environment, he was just a little outmatched.
[HARLEM STREETFIGHT]: No-Countout-No-DQ-Match: Bad News Brown pinned Jim Duggan after a splash in 0:11:12. Rating: *
After the match, Brown looked like he was going to keep going after Duggan, but when Hacksaw got himself back up and looked like he was ready to fight, Bad News simply gave him a nod and went to the back.
MATCH #5 World Title Match King Kong Bundy (c) (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan) vs. Bob Backlund
Right before intermission, we had our first main event, and subsequently, the first World Title defense for the new champion, King Kong Bundy. He was defending the gold against the man he (and Bobby Heenan) stole the title from at Grand 16, Bob Backlund. Backlund had the opportunity to become the first 4-time World champion in history, but he had a lot to overcome in order to do that. Not only did he have to figure out how to beat the monster that is Bundy, but with the Brain lurking around ringside, he had a challenge ahead of him. Backlund's offense is primarily based on getting his opponent to the mat, but Bundy is just a guy you can't really get to the mat. In fact, you could probably count how many times Bundy has been knocked down on one hand. Not only that, but Bundy & Heenan were cheating left and right, and Backlund was in bad shape. The cheating got so carried away that there was a good chance Backlund was going to get hurt. Eventually, there was one man who couldn't take it anymore, and that was RICK MARTEL! Even after the warning President Jack Tunney gave him, Martel couldn't stand by and let this travesty go on. Martel went after Bundy, smashing him with right hands.
King Kong Bundy defeated Bob Backlund by disqualification in 0:08:23. Rating: * (King Kong Bundy retained the GCW World Title.) [Rick Martel interfered against King Kong Bundy.]
The disqualification was obvious, but Martel did the right thing. Martel tried to take Bundy down, and was doing okay with the punches, but as soon as he went for a tackle, Bundy's size came into play. One clubbing blow to Martel's bad neck put a stop to the rally. Luckily, no further damage could be done because BARRY WINDHAM came running down to the ring, and he had a piece of metal piping with him, which even makes someone like King Kong Bundy think better of fighting. No one got seriously hurt, but did Rick Martel just cost him any future at being the World champion?
MATCH #6 The Mexican Eagles vs. The Electric Dream Machine (w/ Precious)
After what happened before intermission, we could use a little levity, and we got that with our first match back from the break with the Mexican Eagles taking on the Electric Dream Machine. Before the match, Jimmy "Jam" Garvin & "Mr. Electricity" Steve Regal did an interview. They said that there was a very good chance that this could be their last match ever. Garvin said it would be a tragedy for wrestling fans everywhere, but once Hollywood got a load of them, they'd be too busy filming blockbuster movies to be bothered with the "idiot fans." Chavo Guerrero & Dos Caras had heard enough and decided if this was going to be EDM's last match, they were going to give them a loss as a going away present. Regal got caught in a backslide from Guerrero to end the match. Hopefully their auditions go better than this match did.
The Mexican Eagles (Chavo Guerrero and Dos Caras) defeated The Electric Dream Machine (Jimmy Garvin and Steve Regal) when C. Guerrero pinned S. Regal after a backslide in 0:04:00. Rating: 3/4*
The Mexican Eagles were celebrating in the ring, having a good time for the fans in Los Angeles, but it would be short-lived when they were blindsided by NIKOLAI VOLKOFF & THE IRON SHEIK. Freddie Blassie was along with them, yelling about how you shouldn't get in the Foreign Legion's business. Officials ran down to break it up, but the message had definitely been sent. I'm sure there will be more to come from this.
MATCH #7 "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes vs. Stan "The Lariat" Hansen (w/ Sgt. Slaughter)
Dusty Rhodes & Stan Hansen have been the best of friends, but right now they're the worst of enemies. Rhodes was in a precarious position though with "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, his regular partner, being in a war already tonight with Bad News Brown. If Sgt. Slaughter chose to get involved, Rhodes wasn't going to have any backup. Early on in the match, Slaughter did try just that when he ambushed Rhodes on the floor behind the referee's back. It wasn't behind Hansen's back though. Hansen got in Slaughter's face about it and told him he wanted to do this himself. They had some tense words before Slaughter relented and went to the back on his own volition. It almost cost Hansen as he got back in the ring and got smashed with a Bionic elbow that would have been a pin had Hansen not landed so close to the ropes. Once Hansen got his bearings, this turned into the fight that we expected. Rhodes can brawl with the best of them, but Hansen is an animal. The more the match was breaking down, the more Hansen's wild brawling was taking control. Hansen was savoring beating down Rhodes, but when he went for the Lariat, he swung wildly, missing completely. He turned back and got caught in the face with the Bionic Elbow and got a quick pin!
Dusty Rhodes pinned Stan Hansen with the Bionic Elbowdrop in 0:09:34. Rating: ****
Hansen wasn't down long, but the Dream bailed from the ring before he got struck by Hansen's wild shots. This was huge for Rhodes, who in recent months had been on the losing end of many battles with the Unholy Alliance. Is this the start of a turnaround?
MATCH #8 Barry Windham vs. Big John Studd (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan)
This was Big John Studd's first singles match since coming to GCW as the newest member of the Heenan Family, and he'd have a fired up opponent as he took on Barry Windham. We found out after the fact that Studd was the one who had mysteriously been attacking people backstage, notably Windham. Windham vowed revenge and was all ready for a fight. Windham is a hell of a young competitor, and has all the tools to break out as a big time player in the wrestling world, which makes Studd's domination of him all the more impressive. Windham had the will, but Studd is such a massive, imposing man that Windham couldn't mount any real offense. Studd nearly took Windham's head off with a short lariat and mercifully put this match to a quick end.
Big John Studd pinned Barry Windham after a short lariat in 0:03:15. Rating: * 3/4
Windham has all the guts in the world, but he is going to need a different gameplan if he wants to go against the monsters in the the Heenan Family.
MATCH #9 Cage Match The Rock 'N Roll Express vs. The British Bulldogs
The first thing to point out after the cage was constructed for the violent main event was that Lou Albano was nowhere in sight. Word has it that before even flying out to LA for this show, Dynamite Kid & Davey Boy Smith told him to stay behind. The reasoning was not known, but at the very least we knew whichever team was going to be victorious was going to do so on their own merits. A cage match is the most dangerous match in all of wrestling, and there's a reason they are so rare. This match cemented that, because by the end of the contest, there wasn't a man in sight who wasn't bleeding. This match was also made an escapes-only cage match, because President Jack Tunney deemed it too dangerous for one of his officials to be in the ring with these four. It's a good thing too, because this fight was crazy. There wasn't a spot inside the cage that was safe. The Bulldogs showed that they were the more ruthless team in the middle chunk of the match, doing everything they could to not only beat the Express down, but end their careers. But if you want to know about resiliency, look no further than Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson. They fought back from everything that the Bulldogs could throw at them, and dished out their own form of punishment. There wasn't a man, woman, or child not on their feet by the end of this one. In the end, all four men were fighting on top of the cage. It was a very dangerous situation. On one side, Morton and Dynamite had climbed over the side and were dangling on the outside wall. On the other, Gibson and Davey Boy were straddling the top and exchanging blows. Morton grabbed Dynamite by the hair and slammed his head into the cage. Dynamite fell back, getting his leg caught in between the bars and dangling, allowing Morton to hit the floor! At nearly the same time, Gibson walloped Davey Boy with one hard punch that sent him toppling into the ring. Gibson climbed over and to the floor, and the Rock 'N Roll Express had won it!
Cage Match: The Rock 'N Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson) defeated The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and Dynamite Kid) by escaping the cage in 0:14:52. Rating: **** 1/4
What a tremendous way to end the night (unless you're the British Bulldogs). The Bulldogs didn't take too kindly to the loss and threw a big fit, destroying the ringside area before going to the back escorted by police officers.
Card rating: ** 1/4
Match observations:
We will have all the details on the last huge show of the year, scheduled for December 30 at Madison Square Garden, coming up next week's edition of GCW Superstars!

Absolutely nothing better than Volkoff and the Sheik being interrupted during their anthem. Fun way to start the show. Good to see Lauper continues to have a cordial relationship with GCW.
I assumed Santana and Guerrero would win the match fairly easily, but didn't see the DQ coming. The Mexican Eagles making the save is a good way to turn the feud between Santana/Guerrero and the Foreign Legion over to the Eagles. That is unless you have more plans for the WWA tag team?
Still a big fan of Bravo, but no way was he taking the IC Title here. Hope Bravo can eventually get a run as TV Champion. DiBiase is clearly on an upward path and could be considered a main eventer very soon.
I've come to accept Gilbert's role as a JTTS. He's actually very good at it. What you can do with JYD after this will be interesting.
I think Duggan may have earned Bad News' respect after that brawl. Duggan has been on the receiving end of a huge push as of late, so I'm surprised you went with Bad News going over cleanly. Maybe it is just a stumbling block for Hacksaw or perhaps the push is going to dwindle.
The use of the DQ was done well as Backlund couldn't afford another loss, and it let Bundy keep the title. Figured Martel would get involved, but maybe not so blatantly. Can't see any way Tunney can back down from his stipulation on Martel's involvement in the back.
You've done so well building up Martel and Windham. Both men could be World Champion by the end of '86.
Yep. Looks like the Eagles/Legion feud is on!
You aren't kidding about this win being huge for Rhodes. This puts him right back in line for a future World Title shot, and makes him look credible against Hansen and Slaughter. Can't see Slaughter being too happy that Hansen made him leave ringside and lost the match, but don't think that'll be the reason these two break up. They still have a few more months of destruction in them.
Huh. Didn't expect a four minute squash of Windham from Studd. This makes Big John look completely unstoppable. With Bundy, I don't see anyone that can stop the Heenan Family right now. Besides Andre, you don't really have a face that has been able to stand up to these two. Martel keeps getting hurt, Backlund is slowing down, and Rhodes is busy.
Crazy main event. I'm glad you ended the show with this match instead of giving the spot to the World Title match. Sometimes a feud just deserves a spot more than a title match. Sounded like a helluva match, and can't wait to hear the reasoning behind Albano's absence.
If I wasn't a knowing viewer, I'd wonder why the Bulldogs were pushed so hard only to lose out to the Express. This does make the tag team division look fairly even with anyone able to come out on top...well, if they can get past Slaughter and Hansen.

Great way to get the action started and using WWA's Tag Champs in the opener is sure to set a good tempo for the show. Thankfully the Mexican Eagles were watching otherwise my guys could have been injured.
Dibiase could be in for a very long reign as IC Champion. Excellent showing against Bravo who I thought would pose more of a threat.
Were you trying to see how much you could type "dance" in the JYD/Gilbert writeup? Gilbert's dancing days are certainly over. I don't much else on the horizon for him however.
I've been looking forward to the Harlem Street Fight. My bets were on Duggan with how he's been positioned lately, but no problems with Bad News picking up the win in his signature match.
The Bundy vs. Backlund match made me very excited for Bundy's reign as Champion. Martel has proven he's way dumber than he looks. Martel has the worst luck, either by design or coincidence, of anyone in the Universe right now. The impending battles between Windham and Bundy are going to be awesome.
Leave it to the EDM to get the crowd worked up immediately after intermission. An angle with the Eagles and the Foreign Legion will be great for both teams... plus, I'm a fan of both so it's win-win for me!
By making Slaughter leave ringside, either Hansen wanted to beat the hell out of Rhodes himself or he actually has some sort of respect for Rhodes. Around this time these two could have match of the night anywhere! Awesome win for Rhodes!
Studd pretty much had to win his debut match but Windham may have lost some credibility losing in such a dominant fashion. Windham will keep fighting but he's going to need some GIANT friends if he's going to stand a chance against Heenan's monsters.
I didn't think you could top the Rhodes/Hansen fight but the Cage Match did just that. This sounded tremendous! The visual of all 4 men bleeding, especially Morton because he was a big time bleeder, made the finish much more spectacular! A great blowoff match for this rivarly and if this is the end of the Bulldog's story in GCW it was a good one. Being taken away in handcuffs is never a good thing.

Good to see GCW back! Sometimes it just makes sense not to put the World Title on last, but I do hope it doesn't get to be a habit.
I also like the fact that you're bringing over some of the best WWA have to offer. Is the exchange program valid the other way around too?

Not going to be a habit with the World Title. Plus, during this time, the main event often took place right before intermission so the champ, i.e. Hogan, could get on the road before the show was over. It wasn't uncommon for the best pure wrestling match of the show going on last. That being said, I don't like that style for every show. But with this one having a heated RnR/Bulldogs cage match, I figured that should go on last.
There is an indirect working agreement with GCW and WWA. I believe some GCW talent will be appearing with him soon. If you remember (and I don't blame you if you don't - it's been months!), Adrian Adonis worked for him for a few months while under GCW contract while I was repackaging him.

11/23/85 - GCW Superstars (TAPED: 11/12/85) LOCATION: Mid-Hudson Civic Center - Poughkeepsie, NY
JACK TUNNEY MAKES A DECISION ON RICK MARTEL
As was the case last week, the show opened in President Jack Tunney's office. Tunney said he was sad to announce that after the actions of Rick Martel last week in Los Angeles, he had to make a difficult decision. He had warned Martel that if he got involved in the World Title match between King Kong Bundy and Bob Backlund, he would no longer be eligible for World Title matches. Even if he felt that Martel was just trying to defend his friend, he broke that decree, and as a result, Rick Martel will no longer get to compete for the World Title for the duration of his career. Tunney knew this would be unpopular, but it was the only decision he could make given the circumstances.
We then got the intro to GCW Superstars and then went to ringside with Gorilla Monsoon & Mark Niemiller, and they first talked about what Jack Tunney had just said - Rick Martel can no longer compete for the World Title! Niemiller said it was the right call because Martel is clearly out of control and he brought this on himself. Monsoon said that was ridiculous as Martel was only doing what was right and keeping that monster King Kong Bundy from injuring Bob Backlund, and there's no reason he should be punished like this. Speaking of the World champion, Bundy was going to be in action today in our main event, taking on another man who was upset with what went down in Los Angeles - Barry Windham! Corporal Kirchner was in the house, as was Dino Bravo. The Rock 'N Roll Express, fresh off their steel cage victory in LA, would be competing as well. We'd be hearing from "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan too, but first, Big John Studd!
MATCH #1 Big John Studd (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan) vs. Mike Saxon
Studd is one of the most imposing men we've seen come along in a long time. If you want further proof, look at what happened in Los Angeles where Studd absolutely dominated one of the hottest rising stars in wrestling, Barry Windham. Studd's competition this week was a lot less in the form of Mike Saxon, who didn't put up much of a fight before Studd put him down with the Backbreaker. Can anyone stop the Heenan Family right now?
Big John Studd pinned Mike Saxon with the Backbreaker in 0:01:08. Rating: DUD
JIM DUGGAN COMMENTS ON BAD NEWS BROWN, BUT GETS INTERRUPTED
Back from commercial break, Lord Alfred Hayes was out at the interview area with "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan. Duggan looked a little banged up, but that is to be expected after the war he went through with Bad News Brown in the Harlem Streetfight. Hayes asked him how he was feeling. Duggan said he felt like he got hit by a truck. Hacksaw said he was beaten up and sore, but he went on Bad News' turf and stuck with him shot for shot. He said he had nothing but respect for Brown, and said any time he wanted to fight, he'd be ready. One thing he might not have been ready for was the interruption that came next from SGT. SLAUGHTER & STAN HANSEN, the World Tag Team champions. Duggan had his fists up ready to go, but at first it looked like the champs were just here to talk. Slaughter said that the Unholy Alliance was in a bad mood after Los Angeles, and they were looking to take someone out. And in their eyes, who better than Jim Duggan? They should have known DUSTY RHODES would be out for backup though, and he brought a baseball bat with him! The Unholy Alliance didn't look so keen to fight now, and left yelling that this one wasn't over by a long shot.
MATCH #2 Corporal Kirchner vs. Gary Starr
Corporal Kirchner was in action next, and took care of business against Gary Starr. During the match, Kirchner did an insert promo where he said that another great year for GCW and the United States was almost in the books, but there was still a group of no-good jerks trying to tarnish the good name of the Red, White, and Blue. Kirchner was of course referring to the Foreign Legion. He promised to make sure that 1985 ended on a sour note for the Foreign Scumbags.
Corporal Kirchner pinned Gary Starr after a side step in 0:02:43. Rating: 1/2*
MATCH #3 "Canadian Strongman" Dino Bravo (w/ Jimmy Hart) vs. Mario Mancini
Dino Bravo had a shot at the Intercontinental Title last Saturday, but fell short to Ted DiBiase. Word in the locker room is that Jimmy Hart is attributing the loss to a lack of preparation time, something that won't be a problem the next time they square off. Bravo did look to be extra focused today, but it wasn't really needed against Mario Mancini. Bravo hits the Side Suplex and gets an easy win.
Dino Bravo pinned Mario Mancini with the Side Suplex in 0:02:40. Rating: -3/4*
MATCH #4 The Rock 'N Roll Express vs. Ron Shaw/Gino Carabello
As this match started, Gorilla Monsoon had some breaking news for everybody. He announced that after losing the steel cage match to the Rock 'N Roll Express last week in Los Angeles, the British Bulldogs have LEFT Global Championship Wrestling! Monsoon said apparently when the chips were down, the Bulldogs decided they couldn't cut it and tucked their tails between their legs and went home. Niemiller wanted to disagree, but couldn't, saying they lost to Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson fair and square, and apparently decided that leaving was the only option. Speaking of Morton & Gibson, they were in action here, and although they may have been a little banged up from LA, that didn't stop them from getting a timely victory on Superstars. The sky is the limit for the former World Tag Team champions.
The Rock 'N Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson) defeated Ron Shaw and Gino Carabello when R. Gibson defeated Shaw when Shaw passed out in the Gibson Leglock in 0:03:47. Rating: *
LIVE EVENT REPORT WITH GENE OKERLUND
A fairly short Live Event Report from "Mean" Gene Okerlund this week, but it didn't mean he was any less excited. Okerlund was here to talk about not one big show coming up, but TWO! The first of which is the last big show of the year, and a big tradition in GCW - the end of the year Madison Square Garden show. This will take place on December 30, and as always, the year-end show is always a tremendous night. Okerlund encouraged everyone to get their tickets now as they are going to sell out fast. Okerlund also dropped the news that the first matches for the show would be announced next week on Superstars.
The other big show he could announce was the first big show of 1986, the return of Saturday Night Slam Masters on January 4! It will also be our debut in Tampa, FL at the SunDome. No word yet on the card for this big show yet either, but Okerlund hinted at there being a World Title defense on the show. He told viewers to keep watching Superstars and the Live Event Report for all the latest news.
MATCH #5 Non-Title Match King Kong Bundy (World champion) (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan) vs. Barry Windham
Barry Windham was no doubt banged up, which is understandable when you've been on the receiving end of brutal attacks from King Kong Bundy and Big John Studd over the last several weeks. But Windham's hatred for the Heenan Family is so strong that there was no way he was going to sit out of this non-title match against the World champ. The story of this match was Windham using his speed edge over Bundy to stick and move, peppering the monster with hard punches and backing away before the beast could get a hold of him. This worked great early on, and Bundy was clearly getting frustrated. So once Bundy finally did get his hands on Windham, it was ugly. Windham went down swinging, but his last ditch effort came to an end when he maybe foolishly went for a bodyslam and collapsed under the massive weight of Bundy. Bundy followed with the Big Splash, and this one was all over but the shouting.
King Kong Bundy pinned Barry Windham with the Big Splash in 0:06:15. Rating: **
Bundy did not take kindly to how much fight Windham put up in the match, and neither did Bobby Heenan. Heenan called out the ENTIRE Heenan Family - Big John Studd, Eddie Gilbert, Tully Blanchard, & Arn Anderson, and this was quickly becoming a dangerous situation. That is, until reinforcements arrived! Before any major damage could be done to Windham, out ran BOB BACKLUND, RICK MARTEL, JUNKYARD DOG, & ANDRE THE GIANT, and the brawl was on! The show went off the air with these 10 men going at it tooth and nail!
Match observations:
What a chaotic end to Superstars! Be sure to join us next week on the program, where we will have the Mexican Eagles taking on the Hart Foundation, and Tully Blanchard defends the Television Title against Jacques Rougeau! Plus, the first matches announced for the year-end show!

Oof. Tough luck for Martel. This has the possibility of becoming a tremendous angle as Martel tries to find away around Tunney's decree. Big John Studd is going to get over as a monster pretty quickly. Actually, he probably already is. Would love to see him team with Bundy a few times. Nice little segment to show that the Unholy Alliance's feud with Duggan and Rhodes is far from over. While guys like Kirchner will probably never make the main event, I love their introduction into this Universe. Bravo squash! You know the Bulldogs are really gone when the heelish announcer admits they were cowardly in running away. I wonder when the year-end show stops being a headline event. It probably already has, I know it has in the NWF. I used to love those massive brawls to end a show. It made me upset when the show would go off the air as I wanted to see who would win the big brawl. Interesting group of guys in there at the end. Guess we are going to get some sort of ten man tag at some point. Good show and looking forward to seeing what the lineup is going to look like for the 12/30 show. Still never understood why someone would call an arena the LA Sports Arena when it is based out of New York.

Ouch. When Tunney makes it official it sounds WAY worse. Martel NEVER getting another shot at the World Title is a brutal punishment.
Studd is going to be a dominate big man for awhile in GCW (unless he quits soon, which is likely).
Oh, we're building for another Unholy Alliance battle with Duggan and Rhodes. Great, subtle way to kickstart it if that's what you're going for.
Kirschner looking to continue his career long feud with foreigners obviously.
I like what I'm reading about Bravo looking to get another shot at the IC title and being more focused.
Ouch, some stiff jabs aimed at the disgruntled and now unemployed British Bulldogs. Just as they were getting hot too. They did one thing for me before they left and that was get me to like the RnR Express just a tad. But the Bulldogs won't be gone for long. They're too good not to sign elsewhere. And they'll both be around for years to come.
Okerlund makes me interested in the MSG show without even announcing a match for it!
Shit hits the fan in the main event! Can the ring even hold that much mass?! I wonder if this 10 man brawl is building for something else - perhaps a lumberjack match?

Just wanna say that the bulldogs leaving really hurts the tag division. The harts arent quite ready to break out and the rnr express have never excited me much. Cant fathom anyone on the roster beating slaughter n hansen except maybe dusty n duggan?
Also did UPW go bankrupt? Seems last few shows were missed?

General idea is that UPW is going to run behind a bit, but it is still very much a part of the Universe.

11/30/85 - GCW Superstars (TAPED: 11/12/85) LOCATION: Mid-Hudson Civic Center - Poughkeepsie, NY
Welcome to GCW Superstars! Gorilla Monsoon & Mark Niemiller were at the helm for the big program, one that will include the Mexican Eagles taking on the Hart Foundation! Nikolai Volkoff & The Iron Sheik are here, as is Junkyard Dog! Speaking of JYD, he will be part of a coalition out to speak later on the program, along with Bob Backlund, Rick Martel, Barry Windham, & Andre the Giant. Niemiller said he hoped they were out to apologize to the Heenan Family for getting involved in last week's main event, to which Monsoon replied, "Highly unlikely." The Television Title will also be up for grabs today with Tully Blanchard defending against Jacques Rougeau! And not only that, but we're going to get our first idea of the matches taking place at the year-end show in Madison Square Garden, and Saturday Night Slam Masters! But first to the ring with Howard Finkel for our first contest!
MATCH #1 Bad News Brown vs. Jim Young
Poor Jim Young. Never a good time when you draw Bad News Brown as your opponent. "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan gave him one hell of a fight in Los Angeles, but Brown came out ahead in the Harlem Streetfight. Brown has a lot more fights to pick with the superstars of GCW, but Jim Young was not one of them. The Ghetto Blaster puts this one in the books.
Bad News Brown pinned Jim Young with the Ghetto Blaster in 0:02:00. Rating: -3/4*
MATCH #2 Television Title Match Tully Blanchard (c) (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan & "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson) vs. Jacques Rougeau (w/ Raymond Rougeau)
Before this match, Television champion Tully Blanchard gave an interview where he all but told the world that Jacques Rougeau was beneath him, and there was no chance he would even break a sweat, let alone lose the TV Title today. Those words almost came back to bite him. Sure, Jacques did not win the TV Title, but he came within an eyelash of doing so on several occasions. Jacques proved that the Rougeaus aren't just about being goofy tourists - they can also bring it in the ring. Arn Anderson desperately wanted to interfere on Tully's behalf, but with Raymond at ringside as well, he couldn't do that. It took a desperation thumb to the eye from Tully on Jacques to give him the opening to hit the Slingshot Suplex and score the win.
Tully Blanchard pinned Jacques Rougeau with the Slingshot Suplex in 0:07:06. Rating: *** 1/4 (Tully Blanchard retained the GCW Television Title.)
A great effort from Jacques, but just came up a little short. Raymond got into the ring to make sure that no further damage could be done to Jacques, but he made the mistake in turning his back on Anderson. The Enforcer spun Raymond around and dropped him with the Gourdbuster, much to the delight of Bobby Heenan.
When we got back from commercial, Gorilla Monsoon said that President Jack Tunney has acted fast. As a result of what happened before the break, next week on Superstars, it will be the Rougeaus taking on TV champion Tully Blanchard & Arn Anderson. Niemiller said that the Rougeaus will be taught a lesson in respect next week.
BOB BACKLUND & COMPANY HAVE A HUGE MATCH ANNOUNCEMENT
If that tag match wasn't bad enough news for the Heenan Family, it was going to get much worse with our next segment. Bob Backlund led the men who he stood tall with last week - Rick Martel, Barry Windham, Junkyard Dog, & Andre the Giant - to the ring for an interview with Mark Niemiller. Niemiller asked Backlund if his friends and he were out here to apologize to Bobby Heenan and the World champion King Kong Bundy for all the torment they have put the Heenan Family through over the past few months. Backlund said nothing was further from the truth. Backlund said that standing with him in the ring was a coalition that has had enough of the Heenan Family's actions here in GCW. Each wrestler went over his issues with members of the Heenan Family, before Backlund said a lot of issues would be settled on December 30 at Madison Square Garden. Backlund said they all talked to Jack Tunney, and Tunney agreed that this all needed to end in the worst way. So at the year-end show, it will be these 5 men taking on the 5 members of the Heenan Family… in WAR GAMES! This is a huge announcement, as there is no more dangerous match than the War Games match, but one way or another, this will be settled. What a huge development!
MATCH #3 Junkyard Dog vs. Joe Mirto
The entire team stayed down at ringside with Junkyard Dog in a show of support as he took on Joe Mirto, though it was hardly necessary. JYD is one of the best the world of wrestling has to offer, and the crowd was well behind his juking and jiving as he went on to an easy victory with the Thump Powerslam. This team looks focused and on the same page as we go into War Games next month.
Junkyard Dog pinned Joe Mirto with the Thump Powerslam in 0:01:25. Rating: -1/2*
MATCH #4 Nikolai Volkoff/The Iron Sheik (w/ "Classy" Freddie Blassie) vs. Sal Gee/Rick Hunter
During the opening moments of this tag team match, we got an insert promo from Nikolai Volkoff, The Iron Sheik, & "Classy" Freddie Blassie. The main topic was the Mexican Eagles who his charges had a run in with in Los Angeles. Blassie said that he didn't care if it was his brother, Chavo Guerrero should have known better than to stick his nose in Foreign Legion business. Blassie did have Volkoff & Sheik wrestling more aggressively tonight, and that led to an easy victory today on Superstars.
The Foreign Legion (Nikolai Volkoff and The Iron Sheik) defeated Sal Gee and Rick Hunter when Volkoff defeated Hunter when Hunter passed out in the Bearhug in 0:03:16. Rating: -1/2*
LIVE EVENT REPORT WITH GENE OKERLUND
"Mean" Gene Okerlund is always an excited guy, but he gets especially excited when it's time for the Live Event Report. This one was particularly good too, as he had two big cards to announce some matches for. The first one is on December 30 from Madison Square Garden for the big year-end show. As we found out earlier in today's broadcast, we know what the main event will be. It will be the most dangerous match in all of in the form of War Games. On one side, it will be Bob Backlund, Rick Martel, Barry Windham, Junkyard Dog, & Andre the Giant, taking on the Heenan Family's team of World champion King Kong Bundy, Big John Studd, Television champion Tully Blanchard, Arn Anderson, & Eddie Gilbert. There have not been many of these matches before, and for good reason. They can easily shorten or end a career in one night. It is certainly going to be something to behold. The other match scheduled will be a match that we originally were going to see in Los Angeles, but we will now get now in the Garden. Sgt. Slaughter & Stan Hansen have been running rampant through GCW since they started teaming up. They will be putting the titles on the line against the team they beat, the Rock 'N Roll Express. Even though they are former 2-time World Tag Team champions, Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson have to be considered the underdogs going into this match. But one thing is for sure, this will be a fantastic contest.
And of course, our first big show of the new year will be on MTV on January 4th, from the SunDome in Tampa, FL - Saturday Night Slam Masters! So far, only one match has been officially signed, but boy is it a big one! Because of the circumstances of their last two matches, President Jack Tunney has ordered one final World Title match between champion King Kong Bundy and former champion Bob Backlund. And because there has been so much outside interference from both sides in their previous two matches, Tunney has announced that there will be a special guest referee to help keep order in the match. The identity of the referee has not been named yet, but Okerlund assured everyone that in the coming weeks, as soon as he knew, the whole world would know.
MATCH #5 The Mexican Eagles vs. The Hart Foundation (w/ Jimmy Hart)
The Mexican Eagles appear to have gotten the goat of Freddie Blassie, but if they heard the Foreign Legion's words earlier, it didn't have any effect on them going into today's main event with the Hart Foundation. The Eagles like to have fun, but Dos Caras & Chavo Guerrero also know how to get it done in the ring. The Hart Foundation weren't in the mood for the Eagles' tactics and took to grounding them right away. Jim Neidhart's power & Bret Hart's technical prowess managed to subdue a lot of the lucha libre influenced wrestling on the Eagles. Once Chavo & Caras got some separation though, this battle spilled to the floor where Caras & Chavo jumped on the Hart Foundation with stereo planchas. Unfortunately for the Eagles, the planchas wiped them out too, and both teams were counted out.
The Hart Foundation (Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart) and The Mexican Eagles (Chavo Guerrero and Dos Caras) battled to a double countout in 0:04:56. Rating: * 3/4
Be sure to join us next week on Superstars where our featured match will be the Rougeau Brothers taking on Tully Blanchard & Arn Anderson! Andre the Giant will be here, as will the Intercontinental champion Ted DiBiase. And we will also have the Flower Shop with special guest "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes! All that and more on GCW Superstars!
12/30/85 - MADISON SQUARE GARDEN - New York, NY
WAR GAMES - Bob Backlund/Rick Martel/Barry Windham/Junkyard Dog/Andre the Giant vs. King Kong Bundy/Big John Studd/Tully Blanchard/Arn Anderson/Eddie Gilbert WORLD TAG TEAM TITLES - Sgt. Slaughter/Stan Hansen (c) vs. The Rock 'N Roll Express
1/4/86 - SATURDAY NIGHT SLAM MASTERS - SUNDOME - Tampa, FL

Yes! Great to see GCW back!
That is a strong group of faces to show up later on. Wonder if we are on the verge of some sort of War Games?
Can't wait to see where Bad News ends up in this Universe. Does he end up as a guy that hardly ever loses but is not involved in any major program? Or does he chase the World Title?
Jacques Rougeau is perfect foil as a TV Title challenger. No way does he take the strap, but I bet he got several believable hope spots. Looking forward to the tag match next week.
WOW~! It is War Games! I can't even imagine a guy like Andre involved in such a match. Should be a spectacle. And the blood should flow with guys like Blanchard, Gilbert, Anderson, and Windham.
JYD, arguably the weak link, came out looking strong in his squash.
I've lost a lot of interest in the Foreign Legion. I still like Volkoff though.
Oooh. One last title match for Backlund? And a special ref? Thought you might go with the cage match, but this adds more intrigue. Hopefully it isn't Gene Kiniski.
Would have bet Hart Foundation would have won the main event fairly easily, but you must have bigger plans for the Eagles.
Good show. Can't wait for the next one.

Feedbackery.
Good news for Bad News as he picks up the win and yes, it's always bad news when you face Bad News.
A bit more competitive match next, as Tully is the perfect man to hold that Television Title. It should be interesting to see who steps up and challenges him in the future.
Oooh, War Games, that's always very nice. And a nice should of solidarity during the next match as the JYD gets the win.
Those no good scoundrals pick up the win.
Well nothing was settled in that tag team main event and next week should be a blockbuster show.

I'm interested to see what the babyfaces have to say about last week. And equally interested in seeing who actually does the talking for that group...
Brown would be best served to pick a fight real soon before he gets totally lost in the shuffle.
Leave it to Tully to make a guy no one expected to win have a fighting chance. Tully and Arn vs. The Rougeaus is a match I would tune in for next week, especially after Jacques efforts tonight.
War Games?!? I don't know why I didn't think of that before! That's a killer team for the match. I cannot wait!
Joe Mirto was probably nervous with the calibur of wrestlers at ringside for his match. That's why he didn't quite make it to a minute and a half.
Big fan of both the Foreign Legion and The Mexican Eagles. Either way this feud goes I'm hoping one of the teams gets a little boost up the card.
Year end show is stacking up quick! As for SNSM I have a hunch who the special referee could be...
Not too many dives on wrestling tv at this time so I guess all men getting counted afterwards is okay. It does sort of give the Eagles an edgy, daredevil vibe though... either that or they're morons. Ha!

12/7/85 - GCW Superstars (TAPED: 11/12/85) LOCATION: Mid-Hudson Civic Center - Poughkeepsie, NY
Welcome to another episode of GCW Superstars! We are closing in quickly on the end of 1985, but there are many battles that are just beginning. On today's broadcast, the Rougeau Brothers meet Tully Blanchard & Arn Anderson! Shiro Koshinaka is here, as Andre the Giant! The Fabulous Ones will be in tag team action, and we will get more information on the Madison Square Garden show, as well as Saturday Night Slam Masters! But first up, Intercontinental champion Ted DiBiase in action!
MATCH #1 Non-Title Match Ted DiBiase (Intercontinental champion) vs. The Gladiator
It didn't take long into our opening contest for the situation to get tense. As DiBiase was schooling The Gladiator in the ring, DINO BRAVO came out to get a closer look. Bravo came up short in his attempt to wrestle the Intercontinental Title from DiBiase in Los Angeles, but he apparently looks like he's not done. DiBiase was distracted and acknowledged Bravo's presence, but he was in no danger of losing the match, winning with the Cobra Clutch.
Ted DiBiase defeated The Gladiator when Gladiator passed out in the Cobra Clutch in 0:02:24. Rating: * 1/2
DINO BRAVO HAS A UNIQUE CHALLENGE FOR TED DIBIASE
DiBiase joined Howard Finkel at ringside and grabbed his microphone, asking Bravo what he wanted out here. Bravo told DiBiase that he had a challenge for him. Bravo said he was the strongest man in the world, and as such, he should be the Intercontinental champion. DiBiase told Bravo that he indeed might be the strongest man he has ever wrestled, but strength alone doesn't win championships. Bravo took this as an insult, and said he wanted to prove to DiBiase what strength could do. Bravo said he wanted to meet DiBiase in an arm wrestling match! DiBiase said that an arm wrestling match against Bravo was crazy, but being crazy has done him well so far, so he accepted the challenge!
MATCH #2 "The Japanese Assassin" Shiro Koshinaka (w/ "Classy" Freddy Blassie) vs. Terry Gibbs
Shiro Koshinaka was in the ring next, and a big part of the story of this match against Terry Gibbs was "Classy" Freddie Blassie pestering Gorilla Monsoon. Blassie spent his time doing two things: running down the Mexican Eagles and running down Corporal Kirchner. Monsoon was getting visibly annoyed by Blassie's rantings, threatening to knock him out at one point. Niemiller chastised Monsoon for being so rude to a guest - that is, until Monsoon threatened to knock him out too. In the ring, Koshinaka hit the Power Bomb and got the win.
Shiro Koshinaka pinned Terry Gibbs with the Power Bomb in 0:02:53. Rating: 1/2*
Monsoon mentioned before the commercial break that Corporal Kirchner would be in action next week, and that he would try to speak to Kirchner then about Blassie continually flapping his gums.
MATCH #3 The Rougeau Brothers vs. Tully Blanchard (Television champion)/"The Enforcer" Arn Anderson (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan)
Bobby Heenan made sure to mention before this match officially started that the Heenan Family would be wrestling this match under protest. Protest or not, Television champion Tully Blanchard almost lost the title to Jacques Rougeau last week before having to resort to underhanded tactics to squeak out the win. Blanchard and partner Arn Anderson tried to take liberties with Jacques after the match, which thankfully was stopped by Jacques' brother Raymond, leading to this tag team match. And what a match it was! I know the program hasn't existed for that long, but this is near the top of the best matches we've seen on our television program so far. The Rougeaus are obviously a cohesive unit as they are brothers and have been together for a lifetime. And despite the tactics often employed by Blanchard & Anderson that are less than stellar, they are proving to be a fantastic team. The match was a classic back-and-forth affair, but it looked as if we were going to see the Heenan Family snag the victory. Jacques was in the ring and was being setup for a spike piledriver. Blanchard climbed to the second rope, but he couldn't jump because Raymond came over and grabbed a hold of his foot! During the struggle, Jacques was able to backdrop Anderson to escape. Blanchard kicked off Raymond, but was caught immediately in a slam by Jacques! Jacques capitalized quickly and put Blanchard in the Boston Crab! Anderson looked to make the save, but before he could, Raymond hooked his leg and pulled him to the outside. Heenan was going insane at ringside, pleading with Blanchard not to give up. Plead as he might, the pain was just too much, and the Television champion gave up!
The Rougeau Brothers (Jacques Rougeau and Raymond Rougeau) defeated The Heenan Family (Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard) when J. Rougeau made Blanchard submit to the Boston Crab in 0:12:57. Rating: **** 1/4
This is a massive victory for the Rougeaus, and especially Jacques as he just made the Television champion give up! Heenan was piping mad as he went to the back with a battered and bruised team.
LIVE EVENT REPORT WITH GENE OKERLUND
Back from commercial break, we were right in the GCW studios with "Mean" Gene Okerlund for the Live Event Report. Okerlund was almost overflowing with excitement, especially with the big announcement he was about to make. With what just happened in the ring with Jacques Rougeau forcing Tully Blanchard to submit in the tag team match, he is being granted one more shot at the Television Title, and it will take place at Saturday Night Slam Masters on January 4th! Not only that, as a decree from the Championship Committee, all partners will be banned from ringside so that hopefully, we get a good, clean fight! That isn't the only title match on that show though, as we have already announced that Bob Backlund will get one final shot at regaining the World Heavyweight Title against King Kong Bundy, with a referee to be name. We cut to an insert promo with Bundy and his manager Bobby Heenan that was recorded earlier in the day. Heenan did all of the talking, saying that Backlund must think it was a major victory to get a special referee named for this title match. Heenan said there are a lot of people out there who are jealous of the success of King Kong Bundy and the Heenan Family. But ultimately, he said, it didn't matter who walked out with the striped shirt because at the end of the day, Bundy would still be the World champion.
But before we get to the MTV special, we have to go back to the most famous arena in the world, Madison Square Garden, on December 30 for a big live event! Now we all know about our huge main event, which will be the team of Bob Backlund, Rick Martel, Barry Windham, Junkyard Dog, & Andre the Giant taking on the Heenan Family in War Games. It's just going to be a matter if these ten can not tear each other apart before then! Also the World Tag Team Titles are on the line with the unholy alliance of Sgt. Slaughter & Stan Hansen, the thus far near unstoppable duo, defending the gold against the former two-time champs, the Rock 'N Roll Express. Okerlund wanted to announce more matches, but he was told that he's not allowed to… yet. He promised that next week will have several match announcements, and from what he has been hearing through the grapevine, they're going to be HUGE!
Back to Monsoon & Niemiller, Monsoon mentioned that in two weeks time, we will get a preview of the War Games match when Tully Blanchard defends the Television Title against Junkyard Dog! Niemiller said that match was extremely unfair because Blanchard has a title defense at Slam Masters, plus War Games coming up. Monsoon said he would just have to suck it up and be a fighting champion.
MATCH #4 Andre the Giant vs. Steve Lombardi
One of the other men in the War Games match was in action next, as we got to see Andre the Giant go at it with Steve Lombardi. Andre was all smiles in the ring, waving to fans. Lombardi took offense to this and hit Andre from behind with a forearm. All this did was serve to anger the Giant, who then made quick work of Lombardi. Monsoon made a good point by saying that the Heenan Family will be hard pressed to find a way to neutralize an angry giant in the cage at MSG.
Andre the Giant pinned Steve Lombardi after a bodyslam in 0:00:51. Rating: * 1/2
MATCH #5 The Fabulous Ones vs. AJ Petruzzi/Mr. X
Tag team action closed up the wrestling portion of Superstars with the Fabulous Ones. Little by little, this team is winning over the fans, but it's strange because they're not really acting that differently. Their entrance is still ridiculously long, but it's almost as if the crowd is growing to both expect it and appreciate it. They're starting to appreciate the crowd too as the Fabulous Ones played to the crowd en route to an easy victory.
The Fabulous Ones (Steve Keirn and Stan Lane) defeated AJ Petruzzi and Mr. X when S. Keirn pinned Petruzzi with the Facedrill in 0:01:48. Rating: -3/4*
They didn't have much time to celebrate the win with the crowd though before the World Tag Team champions, SGT. SLAUGHTER & STAN HANSEN, were in the ring and beating them down. This was a direct message being sent to the Rock 'N Roll Express. Message received, as the Express ran out with chairs in hand to make the save. Just more fuel to the fire going into the tag title rematch at MSG.
THE FLOWER SHOP WITH GUEST DUSTY RHODES
Our final segment of the day was the always interesting Flower Shop. "Adorable" Adrian Adonis was fully decked out in his, ahem, "unique" attire, and the crowd was all over him from the word go. Jimmy Hart was in tow as well, being as annoying as ever. Adonis' guest was an old teammate and even fiercer rival, GCW legend Dusty Rhodes. The crowd was very into the Dream, but Adonis was unimpressed. Adonis railed on Rhodes for his recent failures against the unholy alliance. Sure, Adonis said, Rhodes was able to beat Hansen in Los Angeles, but the Adorable One called that a fluke. Adonis told Rhodes to face it - he just doesn't have what it takes anymore to compete with guys with Sgt. Slaughter & Stan Hansen. This is where Dusty took offense, first making various jokes about Adonis by questioning his sexuality. Rhodes then said he had plenty left in the tank, and alongside "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, he knew they could beat the unholy alliance. Adonis said he wasn't sure Rhodes could beat anyone at this point. Dusty invited Adonis to try to beat him next week on Superstars! Jimmy Hart tried to convince Adonis it was a bad idea, but Adonis accepted, and we have ourselves a big match for next week!
The next show is stacking up to be big. Not only will be see Dusty Rhodes vs. Adrian Adonis, but Monsoon announced we will also see a preview of Madison Square Garden's tag title match when Sgt. Slaughter meets Robert Gibson!
