5/24/86 - Civic Arena - Pittsburgh, PA
MATCH #1 World Tag Team Title Match The Rock 'N Roll Express (c) vs. The Hart Foundation (w/ Jimmy Hart)
The sold out show here in Pittsburgh kicked off with the first of our two title matches as The Rock 'N Roll Express had their first major title defense of their third reign against The Hart Foundation. This was a fantastic way to kick off the show as we had a fast paced tag team match where both teams got to showcase what they do best. Early Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson were able to use their speed to make frequent tags and keep the Hitman & the Anvil off balance, but the Hart Foundation managed to take as many shortcuts as possible to get back on the offensive. The match went back and forth for awhile before Morton got isolated in the ring. However, nothing Jimmy Hart's charges did was enough to keep Morton's shoulders on the mat. The Mouth of the South decided to try to take matters into his own hands. While Bret Hart had referee Danny Davis distracted, Jimmy Hart jumped up and removed the turnbuckle pad from one of the neutral corners. This would come into play in the finish of the match. Neidhart was looking to whip Morton into that exposed turnbuckle, but Gibson ran over and put his body in between Morton and the corner to protect him from hitting the exposed steel. The Anvil saw that and was not happy about it. He charged toward Morton, but Morton moved and Neidhart's face smashed into the unprotected metal! Morton quickly followed up with the Flying Dropkick which was enough to get the pinfall and retain the titles.
The Rock 'N Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson) defeated The Hart Foundation (Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart) when R. Morton pinned Neidhart with the Flying Dropkick in 0:16:58. Rating: *** 1/2 (The Rock 'N Roll Express retained the GCW World Tag Team Titles.)
MATCH #2 Raymond Rougeau vs. "Adorable" Adrian Adonis (w/ Jimmy Hart)
This was a bonus match, and it was filled with a lot of action despite being so short. Raymond Rougeau came right after Adrian Adonis, getting sick and tired of Adonis' primping and prancing around. Raymond had the Adorable One reeling from the opening bell, and looked to have this one over in short order. Raymond went to the top and went for the Rougeau Bomb, but Adonis ducked out of the way and Rougeau crashed onto the mat HARD. Adonis wasted no time in locking on the Goodnight Irene. Raymond struggled to get out and almost reached the ropes on a couple of occasions, but each time Adonis pulled him back to the center of the ring. Raymond would pass out, and Adonis would have his hand raised in victory. To add insult to injury, Adonis applied lipstick to the unconscious Rougeau's face.
Adrian Adonis defeated Raymond Rougeau when Raymond Rougeau passed out in the Goodnight Irene in 0:02:34. Rating: **
MATCH #3 Junkyard Dog vs. "Gorgeous" Jimmy Garvin
This one had some intrigue to it, and it all revolved around a man not even officially in the match, Honky Tonk Man. HTM said that he was going to be down at ringside to support his "friend" JYD, but JYD warned GCW's resident Elvis impersonator to stay far away from the ring. HTM did stay away from the ring at first, but when Garvin started taking liberties on JYD on the floor, HTM "had enough" and ran to the ring. While still on the floor, HTM confronted Garvin about the underhanded tactics he was using and demanded that he stop. Precious had referee Joey Marella's attention in the ring as HTM hauled off to hit Garvin. HTM of course missed wildly and nailed JYD instead, knocking the Dog into the ringpost. Precious dropped down from the apron, Garvin got back in the ring, Marella made the count, and HTM feigned innocence as JYD lost via countout.
Jimmy Garvin defeated Junkyard Dog by countout in 0:04:53. Rating: 3/4* [Honky Tonk Man interfered against Junkyard Dog.]
When JYD came to, he was furious with HTM and was asking just what on earth he was doing there when he told him not to. HTM begged for forgiveness saying it was clearly an accident, but JYD was having none of it, chasing HTM to the back.
MATCH #4 Andre the Giant/Dos Caras/"The Birdman" Koko B. Ware vs. The Heenan Family (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan)
The team of Andre the Giant, Dos Caras, & Koko B. Ware might look mismatched on paper, but they were united and ready to take action against representatives of The Heenan Family - Big John Studd, Arn Anderson, & Television champion Tully Blanchard. This ended up being a very even matched contest. The fan favorite team showed great teamwork, but in the end, they weren't the well oiled machine that The Heenan Family are. Say what you will about the methods Bobby Heenan has his charges use, but it's hard to argue with how successful they have been. They did a masterful job of keeping Andre out of the ring for the most part, which allowed Studd to catch Dos Caras in the Backbreaker to get the win.
The Heenan Family (Arn Anderson, Big John Studd and Tully Blanchard) defeated Andre the Giant, Dos Caras and Koko B. Ware when Studd pinned Dos Caras with the Backbreaker in 0:13:29. Rating: *** 3/4
Studd looked like he was going to take liberties, but Andre came in and chased him off. Anderson & Blanchard looked like they would do the same to the downed Caras, but Koko was in to make sure we wouldn't see that. He made a mistake though by turning his back to check on Caras before Anderson & Blanchard left the ring. They jumped Koko, beat him down, and threw him out to the floor. They then turned their attentions to Caras, but suddenly someone ran out from the back, climbed to the top rope, and took down both Anderson & Blanchard with a flying crossbody! Upon closer look, we saw the man was HECTOR GUERRERO, apparently making his return to GCW! Hector caught Anderson with a dropkick that sent him flying outside, and then caught Tully running in with a backdrop to send him to the floor! Hector helped Caras to his feet and hugged him. Hector is of course the brother of Caras' tag team partner Chavo Guerrero, who is out of action with a major neck injury right now. It looks like Hector is here to pick up where Chavo left off!
MATCH #5 Bob Backlund vs. Bad News Brown
Bob Backlund & Bad News Brown have been at each other for the better part of the last two months, and they were looking to settle their differences once and for all tonight. There was a sense that this one was going to go the way of whoever could make it their style of match - either a mat wrestling contest from Backlund or a streetfight from Brown. Brown did what he could to make this a fight, but Backlund's amateur wrestling past worked well in his favor. The finish would come when Brown would grab the object out of his tights he has used before and took a wild swing at Backlund. Backlund saw it coming though and countered, catching Bad News with a crucifix and holding him down for the 3 count! Backlund now moves on to his TV Title shot next week on Superstars.
Bob Backlund pinned Bad News Brown after a crucifix in 0:06:29. Rating: *
MATCH #6 Rick Martel vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan)
It's very rare that you see this kind of hatred in a match, but I think calling the issues between Rick Martel & Ricky Steamboat "personal" would be a vast understatement. Steamboat shocked the world with his return to GCW at Super Cade II, turning his back on the fans, joining the Heenan Family, and costing Martel his long-awaited chance to become World champion in the process. The tone of the match was set early as Martel was introduced first. When the Dragon was introduced, Martel met him in the aisle and the fight was on!
You would never have been able to guess that these two competitors are widely considered two of the most technically skilled athletes in all of wrestling, because this resembled a fight. To the credit of referee Tommy Young, he knew how personal this feud was and he allowed a lot of leeway so that this situation could potentially be settled. It wasn't long into the match that Steamboat was busted open. That was like blood in the water for Martel, who somehow became even more aggressive. Steamboat managed to fight back though, using the aggressiveness of Martel against him when he lured him to the outside and sent him face first into the ring post, busting him open as well.
By the end of this back and forth affair, both men were nearly out on their feet exchanging haymakers. Martel would duck one of those wild blows from the Dragon, taking him down with a double leg takedown. Martel looked to be going for the Boston Crab, but he was too exhausted to fully get it applied. He almost had Steamboat turned, but the Dragon reached up and pulled him down into a small package, enough to secure the pinfall in an absolute classic match.
Ricky Steamboat pinned Rick Martel with a small package in 0:21:00. Rating: *****
An exhausted and bloody Steamboat rolled out of the ring as Bobby Heenan celebrated like he just won the World Title. Martel pulled himself back up, but was clearly disappointed in the result. He did receive a standing ovation for his efforts though, and rightfully so.
MATCH #7 Ted DiBiase (Intercontinental champion)/Barry Windham vs. The Power Company (w/ Jimmy Hart)
It was a nice sight to see Intercontinental champion Ted DiBiase & Barry Windham back on the same page again. They will be the first to tell you that they have had their recent issues, but they were back on the same wavelength - or so we thought. Early on, everything seemed great. Frequent tags, even some crisp double team maneuvers. The Power Company was reeling to say the least. However, DiBiase got caught by a big powerslam from Hercules and the momentum shifted. DiBiase got isolated, and for the next few minutes suffered a lot of punishment. He stayed in it though and would eventually find his opening when he ducked a double clothes attempt from the Power Company and took them both down with a double clothesline of his own! The crowd was hot as he crawled over to make the tag to the outstretched hand of Windham, but once he got there, Windham dropped down to the floor, waived his hands dismissively, and walked to the back! DiBiase looked on with a combination of hurt and confusion, but he was now outnumbered and had big problems. DiBiase did all he could to fight back, but 2 against 1 is rarely going to work out in the favor of the 1, and he would be defeated by the Power Company. I thought these issues were over, so what is going on in the head of Barry Windham? We hope to get some answers to that soon on Superstars.
The Power Company (Dino Bravo and Hercules) defeated Barry Windham and Ted DiBiase when Bravo pinned DiBiase with the Side Suplex in 0:08:12. Rating: ****
MATCH #8 Partners banned from ringside Hawk (w/ Paul Ellering) vs. Sgt. Slaughter
The tag team partners may have been banned from ringside, but that didn't mean this battle between Hawk of the Road Warriors and Sgt. Slaughter of the Unholy Alliance was going to be any less brutal. The partners being banned stipulation was added in an attempt to get a decisive winner, but these two teams aren't actually known for their propensity to follow the rules. It didn't take long before STAN HANSEN came lumbering out to the ring looking to get involved, but he was quickly met by ANIMAL running down and nailing him from behind. While those two were brawling on the floor, referee Joey Marella jumped outside to attempt to restore some order. In doing so, he took his eyes off the ring and didn't notice Slaughter throw powder right in Hawk's eyes! Hawk is a tough guy, but no one is going to be the same after being blinded. Slaughter followed up with a spinebuster slam and went for the cover. Marella slid back in the ring to make the count, not noticing Slaughter's feet on the ropes as well. Well this stipulation sure didn't work. If this war is going to be settled, there looks to be more battles on the way.
Sgt. Slaughter pinned Hawk after a spinebuster slam in 0:07:26. Rating: **
MATCH #9 World Title Match King Kong Bundy (c) (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan) vs. "The Immortal" Hulk Hogan
Last month, many feel that Hulk Hogan was robbed out of the World Heavyweight Title, so the packed house in Pittsburgh was chomping at the bit to see the Hulkster get a second chance. King Kong Bundy was fortunate to escape with the title, but he was looking to do the same thing here in our main event. The crowd was buzzing as these titans clashed, Hogan being the early aggressor. His strategy was to end this early because with a monster like Bundy, you don't want to give him a chance to be on the offensive. Hogan did everything he could, but he couldn't get the big man off his feet. He tried for a bodyslam, but the sheer girth of the champion prevented that as he crashed hard on Hogan's ribs. From there, Bundy went to work, softening Hogan's ribs up with hard shots. Bundy seemed to have this one in control when he went for the Big Splash, but Hogan rolled out of the way and was filled with new life! Hogan Hulked up, and was unstoppable. Hard punches, a big boot, and the Big Leg Drop followed for the 1….2… BOBBY HEENAN BREAKS IT UP! OH C'MON!
Hulk Hogan defeated King Kong Bundy by disqualification in 0:08:56. Rating: DUD (King Kong Bundy retained the GCW World Title.)
That was a blatant disqualification if there ever was one! Hogan was furious and was staring bullets through Heenan, and the Brain looked about as terrified as a grown man ever could. Heenan begged and pleaded for his life, but Hogan grabbed him around the collar and looked to knock his lights out. Before he could though, Bundy nailed him in the back with a forearm! Hogan collapsed to the canvas, and Bundy followed up with the Big Splash! If that wasn't bad enough, Heenan handed Bundy a leather strap which Bundy unloaded on the Immortal One with, leaving many unsightly welts on his back. Officials ran out and eventually restored order, but Hogan had to be helped out of the building. A somber way to end an otherwise fantastic show. You have to believe the Hulkster will come back looking for revenge after that heinous attack.

Pretty much an 80’s dream match kicking things off here. Great finish and I highly doubt this will be the last time these teams meet.
Adonis has a way of always making opponents look great, and I’m not talking about the lipstick part. Although that probably pairs well with Raymond’s mustache.
Loved the finish with HTM here as well. Such a silly way to carry out a feud but it’s effective. Everyone looks good here.
Insane that the 6 man got a better rating than the opener tonight, but all in all, this match is a spectacle! Wait, whaaaa?! Hector is in GCW?! His friggin neck is broken!
Pretty straight forward here with Backlund and Bad News, who may have peaked coming out on the losing end of this feud. I’m always looking forward to watching what Backlund’s next move is so it’ll be interesting what happens with this TV Title match.
Couldn’t have scripted the Martel/Steamboat match any better. 5 stars!! Well deserved too! Steamboat solidified himself as a heel with this match and hopefully Martel proved something to the match makers that will get him over the hump and potentially be, not just a legend, but an icon of this Universe. I love it!
I wasn’t sure what would happen with this tag match, but it’s painfully obvious now that it has happened. GCW, right now, is full of dream scenarios. Windham and Dibiase could potentially elevate each other to the megastars they are destined to be. And The Power Company carrying their weight in this 4-star match is telling of how great the duo is.
We all knew the LOD/Unholy Alliance feud wasn’t getting wrapped up in a singles match. This match served its purpose and that was to simply take another step towards the blowoff match that inevitably ends the world.
It’s a shame that this event ended the way it did. I keep thinking Hogan is going to win the big win because well, it’s 1986, and he’s Hulk Hogan. But it may not be in the cards right now. I have no complaints with Bundy on top and there are some guys (*cough* Martel) who may be more over and deserving of a run than Hogan. So Hogan going to NWF originally during a time where he should have been built up in a company that would still be around in ’86 could have killed Hulkamania. Either that or I’m just pitching for him to jump to WWA and keep the ship afloat.
Hell of a card!

5/31/86 - GCW Superstars (TAPED: 5/13/86) LOCATION: Mid-Hudson Civic Center - Poughkeepsie, NY
Welcome to the final GCW Superstars of May! Gorilla Monsoon & Mark Niemiller were on hand as always to introduce the show, a show that will feature Bad News Brown, Ricky Steamboat (who Niemiller made sure to mention was victorious in Pittsburgh), and Animal of the Road Warriors taking on Big John Studd! We will also see the in ring return of Hector Guerrero, who made his comeback in Pittsburgh to save his partner tonight, Dos Caras! We will get some updates on our debut in Tacoma, and in the featured match, Tully Blanchard defends the Television Title against Bob Backlund! And not only that, but we will have exclusive footage from last Saturday's epic title match between King Kong Bundy & Hulk Hogan! But to kick off the show, to the set of the Flower Shop!
THE FLOWER SHOP W/ SPECIAL GUEST BARRY WINDHAM
The show kicked off with The Flower Shop, and "Adorable" Adrian Adonis was in one of his finest moomoos today. He had Jimmy Hart with him as always, and they welcomed guest Barry Windham. The question on everyone's mind was why Windham walked out on his friend Ted DiBiase and left him all alone to take on Hart's charges, Dino Bravo & Hercules. Windham maintained that he did nothing wrong, saying that it was pretty clear during the match that DiBiase was looking out only for himself. So, he let him fight by himself. At this point, TED DIBIASE himself came out and he was not happy. DiBiase yelled at Windham that if he had a problem with him, he should have confronted him about it like a man and not left him high and dry like a coward. Windham said that he was plenty man and he would prove it. He challenged DiBiase straight up to a match in Tacoma on June 17. Windham added, "And if YOU are a man, Ted, you will put that Intercontinental Title on the line as well!" DiBiase didn't hesitate in saying yes, saying that he we knock the bad attitude out of Windham one way or another. The two shook hands to seal the deal, but it was a very tense handshake to say the least. Either way, what a match we have lined up for the Tacoma Dome!
MATCH #1 Hector Guerrero/Dos Caras vs. Jim Kent/Al Navarro
It was nice to see Hector Guerrero back in a GCW ring, teaming with his brother's partner Dos Caras. As a team, they looked great and ended up getting a win. After the match, Monsoon got a quick interview with the duo, namely Hector (as he's the one who can speak clear English, after all). Monsoon welcomed him back and asked what made him decide to come back now. Hector said that he wanted to be where the hottest wrestling in the world was and that was GCW. He also send a get well soon message to his brother Chavo, who will be out of action for quite some time with his neck injury. He said he hoped to do Chavo proud in his place.
Hector Guerrero and Dos Caras defeated Jim Kent and Al Navarro when Dos Caras pinned Kent after a flying cross body press in 0:03:25. Rating: *
MATCH #2 Animal (w/ Paul Ellering) vs. Big John Studd (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan)
This feud between The Road Warriors & The Unholy Alliance is going to only get worse if something major isn't done. Animal was in action against Big John Studd, and the match barely had a shot to get out of the gate before SGT. SLAUGHTER & STAN HANSEN were at ringside, pummeling Animal without mercy.
Animal defeated Big John Studd by disqualification in 0:01:52. Rating: -1/4* [Sgt. Slaughter and Stan Hansen interfered against Animal.]
Animal was getting a massive beatdown until his partner HAWK ran down to even the odds. The fight was getting intense, but the Road Warriors forgot that Studd was still at ringside and he was all the willing to help the Unholy Alliance beat down Hawk & Animal. What wasn't expected was an appearance by THE BARBARIAN, who was obviously harboring a grudge over his run in with Slaughter & Hansen last week. Barbarian helped the Road Warriors turn the tide and clear the ring.
MATCH #3 Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan) vs. Bob Bradley
Ricky Steamboat won one of the greatest matches in GCW history last Saturday, barely surviving an angry Rick Martel. Steamboat was back in action today against Bob Bradley. This was nothing more than an exhibition for the Dragon, who had little problem putting Bradley away.
Ricky Steamboat pinned Bob Bradley with the Flying Crossbody Press in 0:03:41. Rating: * 1/4
He did have problem getting away from RICK MARTEL though, who ran down and tackled Steamboat, unloading on him with a fury of right hands before Bobby Heenan helped pull his charge to the floor. Martel angrily snatched the microphone away from ring announcer Howard Finkel and had some pointed words for Steamboat. Martel said that the Dragon might have gotten the best of him in Pittsburgh, but Martel wouldn't stop until he had his revenge. "I will NEVER quit until I take you out!" That gave Martel an idea actually - he promptly challenged Steamboat to an I Quit match for Tacoma! The Brain backed off yelling that Martel was nuts if he thought Steamboat would accept that challenge, but little did he know that Steamboat was about to yell, "I accept!" This match is on! Oh my!
MATCH #4 Bad News Brown vs. Chris Duffy
Bad News Brown came up short against Bob Backlund in Pittsburgh, and he took it out on his hapless opponent today. This was a mugging, plain and simple, than mercifully came to an end when Brown swatted an attempted dropkick hard to the mat. Not a good 1986 for Brown so far, but he seems to be in an even worse mood than usual now, which could be bad news for the roster.
Bad News Brown pinned Chris Duffy after a side step in 0:03:19. Rating: -* 1/4
JUNKYARD DOG WANTS SOME ANSWERS FROM HONKY TONK MAN, BUT GETS SOMETHING DIFFERENT ALL TOGETHER
Lord Alfred Hayes was backstage with Junkyard Dog, and the usually jovial JYD was anything but on today's program. Hayes asked him for his thoughts on Honky Tonk Man. JYD said he was livid, because he warned HTM to leave him alone and stay away during his match in Pittsburgh, but he did just the opposite and because of it, JYD ate defeat. JYD wanted to make a promise to HTM right now - if he saw him in one of his matches again, there was going to be trouble. At this point, HONKY TONK MAN himself appeared, trying to apologize to JYD. Honky Tonk said it was a complete accident and their friendship means the world to him. JYD blew him off, telling HTM, "We're not friends!" before turning around to leave. HTM didn't much like that, as he spun JYD around and smashed the guitar right over his head! JYD went out like a light as HTM put the bad mouth on him. Medical officials rushed to JYD's aid as Lord Alfred ran for the hills. We found out later that JYD was taken to the hospital with potentially serious injuries. Monsoon called HTM scum while Niemiller applauded him for showing that "ungrateful Junkyard Dog who's boss."
LIVE EVENT REPORT W/ GENE OKERLUND
Gene Okerlund was late to the Live Event Report. Literally, we had 10 seconds of dead air before Mean Gene slid into frame. He explained why he was late by saying he was just talking to President Jack Tunney and had the first 4 matches to officially announce for our debut in Tacoma, WA on June 17! The first match to announce is that after the confrontation during the Flower Shop, Ted DiBiase will officially defend the Intercontinental Title against his friend and long time partner, Barry Windham. We will also officially be seeing The Road Warriors taking on The Unholy Alliance in what Tunney is hoping will finally be the end to their increasingly wild battles. The other match to come from that earlier pier six brawl is that the undefeated Barbarian will go one-on-one with Big John Studd! No one has been able to stop The Barbarian to this point, but Studd is a literal giant. We'll see what The Barbarian is made of in Tacoma. And lastly, based on the earlier challenge, Okerlund was proud to announce that Rick Martel & Ricky Steamboat would be meeting one more time… in an I QUIT MATCH! Okerlund put over how the last match between these two was possibly the greatest match in GCW history, and that the rematch could be even better. Okerlund ended the segment by saying there was another big announcement brewing, but he could announce anything just yet. He hoped to be able to on next week's Superstars.
MATCH #5 Television Title Match Tully Blanchard (c) (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan) vs. Bob Backlund
Tully Blanchard's Television Title reign is quickly approaching one year, and it's amazing how many times he's been able to escape with his title reign in tact by the skin of his teeth. He had a very tough test in today's feature match as he defended against former 3-time World champion Bob Backlund. Backlund has never held the TV Title and would like to add the championship to his trophy case. This was a great technical match, and throughout the early stages, there was no sign of Blanchard trying to be, well, Blanchard. No cheating, no underhanded backdoor tactics. He took the challenge of facing a world class wrestler seriously and wanted to out wrestle Backlund. Easier said than done though. The longer the match went, the more obvious it became that Backlund was going to win this type of match. So Blanchard did what any great champion would do - blatantly poke Backlund in the eye right in front of the referee and getting himself disqualified.
Bob Backlund defeated Tully Blanchard by disqualification in 0:07:21. Rating: ** (Tully Blanchard retained the GCW Television Title.)
Blanchard grabbed the TV Title from the timekeeper and sprinted toward the back, but before he got there, he was met by JIM DUGGAN! Duggan wasn't going to let Blanchard run away like a coward and nailed him with a right hand, put him on his shoulder, and carried him to the ring! Backlund was waiting for him and sent him flying with a backdrop and then tossed him over the top to the floor. The show came to an end with Backlund & Duggan celebrating together in the ring.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE KING KONG BUNDY/HULK HOGAN WORLD TITLE MATCH
To end the program Monsoon & Niemiller talked about the footage they were about to show of highlights from the World Title match in Pittsburgh between champion King Kong Bundy & challenger Hulk Hogan. Monsoon says the video will show that Hogan was clearly just about to become World champ if it wasn't for that weasel Bobby Heenan. Niemiller said that was lunacy. They showed the ending of the match which saw Hogan hit the Big Leg Drop in what should have gotten the pinfall before Heenan broke it up. They then showed Bundy laying into Hogan with a leather strap, leaving large welts on the Hulkster's flesh. Monsoon commented on how deplorable this was and surely the actions of a desperate man. Niemiller laughed that off, saying that Bundy was simply teaching Hogan that only the tough survive here in Global Championship Wrestling. Monsoon did have breaking news that next week on Superstars, Jesse Ventura will be sitting down with both King Kong Bundy AND Hulk Hogan in a face-to-face interview! With those two together in a room (and with The Body there to egg them on), who knows what could happen!
We have a huge Superstars ahead of us next week. Not only that face-to-face interview, but we will have some great wrestling as well! Andre the Giant will be here, as will Koko B. Ware. We will see the return from suspension of "The Total Package" Lex Luger, and the Rougeau Brothers will face the Power Company! And in an absolutely huge main event, a rare World Tag Team Title match as in a rematch from Pittsburgh, the Rock 'N Roll Express defend the gold against the Hart Foundation!

End of May ’86! Longest month in Universe history?
Excellent progression with Windham and Dibiase and The Flower Shop is a fun place to do it. I think these two could have some of the best matches of the year and one, if not both, could be elevated to the next level shortly after.
Man, I had PLANS for Hector! As much as it hurts the he would call GCW the best wrestling in the world, where he will undoubtedly get buried and mocked, after leaving a place that made him a long time Tag Team Champion, it’s nice that he’s still in the Universe. Dick.
I saw Animal vs. Studd in the intro and thought “what the hell is going to happen here?” I should have expected what happened. And throwing Barbarian in the mix is awesome!
Martel is the best. He’s got a temper that ALWAYS gets him into trouble. I love that about him. An I Quit Match is tough to book, especially with two very strong talents. The match should be nothing less than stellar though.
Bad News is in top form when he’s destroying enhancement. Hasn’t had much luck against any tenured opponents though.
Guitar shot! That will be in the highlight reels for years! You’re getting all the angles over on tonight’s show.
Backlund could probably get a rematch with Tully but I’m not sure if that’s what he wants. Duggan clearly wants to get his hands on Tully so that seems to be the direction. Either way, Tully has a huge target on his back.
A face-to-face mediated by Jesse Ventura is a recipe for disaster!
Next week should be great. I almost forgot you had Luger, too.

6/7/86 - GCW Superstars (TAPED: 5/13/86) LOCATION: Mid-Hudson Civic Center - Poughkeepsie, NY
Welcome to the hottest TV program in wrestling today, GCW Superstars! Gorilla Monsoon & Mark Niemiler were on hand to intro the show, a show that will feature Andre the Giant! Also on the program, the Rougeaus will face the Power Company! Niemiller said he was excited about the return from suspension of Lex Luger, who was unfairly punished for getting rid of that fossil Wahoo McDaniel! Monsoon was deeply offended by that statement, but it didn't stop him from talking about our feature match, a rare World Tag Team Title match as the Rock 'N Roll Express defend the gold against their rivals, the Hart Foundation! They threw it to the ring to Howard Finkel and our first contest.
MATCH #1 Koko B. Ware vs. Dave Barbie
Koko B. Ware kicked off our wrestling today, and it was a great display by the spunky youngster who showed off his flashy high-flying style before putting Dave Barbie away with the Ghostbuster.
Koko B. Ware pinned Dave Barbie with the Ghostbuster in 0:03:54. Rating: * 1/4
After the match, Koko B. Ware asked for some interview time with Gorilla Monsoon. Koko said that he was appalled by what Honky Tonk Man did to his friend Junkyard Dog last week, and wanted HTM to come out here so he could give him a piece of his mind. HTM did come out, and unlike in the past, looked a lot less apologetic than he was. HTM called Koko "little man" and said if Ware didn't quit running his mouth, he could end up next to JYD in the hospital. Koko told him to bring it on, and challenged him to a match in Tacoma! HTM laughed it off, but once Koko slapped him across the face, that laugh turned into a look of sternness. HTM agreed and the match will take place on June 17.
MATCH #2 The Rougeau Brothers vs. The Power Company (w/ Jimmy Hart)
The Power Company has been riding high since making their official debut at Super Cade, proving themselves to be a very formidable tandem. They definitely don't lack confidence as they have been known to spend a lot of time in the locker room posing in front of mirrors. They took that posing out to the ring with them today, and it cost them big against the Rougeaus. The bell rang, but Dino Bravo & Hercules blew Jacques & Raymond off, choosing to pose for each other instead of focusing on the match. The Rougeaus didn't much care for that and hit stereo dropkicks to both members of the Power Company. Hercules flew out of the ring but Bravo hit chest first on the ropes. Raymond would follow up with a rolling reverse cradle that surprised the Canadian Strongman long enough to get the 3 count!
The Rougeau Brothers (Jacques Rougeau and Raymond Rougeau) defeated The Power Company (Dino Bravo and Hercules) when R. Rougeau pinned Bravo after a rolling reverse cradle in 0:00:59. Rating: * 1/4
This has to be considered a bit of an upset. Jimmy Hart came over and was yelling about what an outrage this was to Monsoon & Niemiller. Niemiller, of course, agreed, but Monsoon commented that this is what happens when you don't focus on your opponents. Word has it that Jimmy Hart is already attempting to get a rematch signed.
BOB BACKLUND WANTS THE TELEVISION TITLE, BUT HE'S NOT THE ONLY ONE
Lord Alfred Hayes was backstage with Bob Backlund. Backlund had comments regarding what a coward Tully Blanchard was for deliberately getting himself disqualified in their Television Title match last week. Backlund said that he is the rightful TV champion and wanted another shot at the gold. Backlund was interrupted, but not by the man he challenged, but by JIM DUGGAN. Hacksaw first put over how much he respects Backlund, but if anyone deserves the next title shot at Blanchard, it was him. He talked about how Blanchard ran from him until the time limit expired, and with all due respect to Backlund, he was asking for the next shot. GCW President Jack Tunney happened to be in the building today and came in saying he had a solution. He said both Backlund & Duggan were right that they deserved the next shot, so why not settle it in the ring? Tunney set up Backlund vs. Duggan for the Tacoma Dome, and the winner of that contest would get the next TV Title shot. Both men liked the idea, and they shook hands saying may the best man win.
MATCH #3 Andre the Giant vs. Primo Manzello/Mad Richard
Another week, and another fun appearance by Andre the Giant destroying two hapless much smaller men. Andre is greatly beloved here by GCW fans, but one has to wonder when he is going to take the next big step. Monsoon speculated that Andre could be World champion if he wanted to be. Niemiller had to agree, but said he was glad that Andre seems content just shaking hands and smiling at the fans.
Handicap-Match: Andre the Giant defeated Primo Manzello and Mad Richard when Andre pinned Richard with the Elbowdrop in 0:02:50. Rating: -* 1/4
MATCH #4 "The Total Package" Lex Luger (w/ Bobby Heenan) vs. Rob Van Winkel
Lex Luger was back off of his recent suspension levied on him by Jack Tunney for breaking Wahoo McDaniel's leg, and he was not in a good mood whatsoever. Luger didn't even really seem to be listening to his manager Bobby Heenan's instructions as he was simply brutalizing Rob Van Winkel. Luger would get the win with the Torture Rack, but almost had the decision reversed when he refused to release the hold. Danny Davis had to levy a 5 count after the match before Luger dropped the lifeless Van Winkel to the mat. This new bad attitude of Luger could spell trouble for the roster of GCW, and may lead to future suspensions if he's not careful.
Lex Luger defeated Rob Van Winkel when Van Winkel passed out in the Torture Rack in 0:02:22. Rating: * 1/2
LIVE EVENT REPORT W/ GENE OKERLUND
Mean Gene was on the scene (see what I did there?) for the Live Event Report. He ran down the card so far for Tacoma, which now officially includes 6 big matches (with more to be announced). He shilled that tickets are still available for the show which takes place on June 17. He was able to add one more match to the card, announcing that Dos Caras & Hector Guerrero will team to take on Television champion Tully Blanchard & "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson.
Okerlund had promised a big announcement for today as well, and he did not disappoint. He stated that on July 14, we will all witness the return of King of the Ring! Sullivan Stadium in Foxboro, MA will play host to the annual tournament this year, and it will feature 16 of the top wrestlers in GCW competing for the right to be called King. He couldn't name any of the participants yet as that is still be finalize by the GCW offices, but he was going to do his best to name some of those wrestlers next week on Superstars.
MATCH #5 World Tag Team Title Match The Rock 'N Roll Express (c) vs. The Hart Foundation (w/ Jimmy Hart)
This could have been one of our best TV main events since GCW Superstars debuted, and there was definitely a lot on the line as the Rock 'N Roll Express defended the World Tag Team Titles against the Hart Foundation. These two teams had a fantastic clash in Pittsburgh and this one was no different. Both teams are just so evenly matched that when they get in the ring, it's almost impossible for them not to tear the house down. A great back and forth affair that ended with Jim Neidhart getting caught with the Double Dropkick that was barely enough to keep the Anvil to the mat for the 1-2-3.
The Rock 'N Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson) defeated The Hart Foundation (Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart) when R. Gibson pinned Neidhart after the Double Dropkick in 0:12:31. Rating: *** 3/4 (The Rock 'N Roll Express retained the GCW World Tag Team Titles.)
Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson have had the Hart Foundation's number so far during their battles, but Monsoon commented on how these matches could all have gone either way. Niemiller echoed those sentiments and said that it's not a matter of IF Bret Hart & Jim Neidhart become the tag team champions, but WHEN. Monsoon ended by saying he wouldn't be surprised at all if that eventually happened.
JESSE VENTURA TRIES TO KEEP ORDER BETWEEN KING KONG BUNDY & HULK HOGAN
The show ended with the Jesse Ventura sitdown interview with World champion King Kong Bundy & "The Immortal" Hulk Hogan. There was extra security on hand to make sure this didn't erupt into a brawl. GCW President Jack Tunney was present as well, and we would find out as the interview went on. Ventura was clearly pro Bundy, but he did give Hogan the chance to speak. But of course, first he talked to Bundy & Bobby Heenan. Ventura said it was ridiculous for Hogan to imply that the Heenan Family was scared of him. The Brain wanted to make sure that King Kong Bundy is scared of NO ONE. He brought up Bundy's track record, and mentioned he has been the most dominant World champion in history. Heenan said that his jumping in and getting involved in Pittsburgh had nothing to do with saving Bundy's title, but because "you don't deserve to be here in the first place, Hogan!" Hogan rebutted, saying that was a load of bull and that Hulkamania was running wild in GCW whether the Heenan Family liked it or not. Hogan said he was born to be the World champion, and one way or another, that was going to happen. Ventura laughed at Hogan as he asked how his back was doing after Bundy laid into him with that leather strap. That's actually where Tunney interjected, saying he had a conversation with Hogan earlier, and the Hulkster had a unique request that he has granted. "If you want to use the strap so much, Bundy, you will have your wish, because on June 17 in Tacoma, WA, you will be defending the World Title against Hulk Hogan… in a STRAP MATCH!" Heenan was irate and threatened amongst other things to sue Tunney, but Tunney continued and said that to make sure the Brain doesn't get his man disqualified on purpose again, he will be suspended high above the ring in a steel cage! We are going to get a definitive winner one way or another!
Join us next week on GCW Superstars where we will see Bad News Brown in action, as well as #1 contender to the Intercontinental Title Barry Windham! Not only that, but we will have not one, not two, but THREE feature matches! One half of the World Tag Team champions Ricky Morton will face Adrian Adonis, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan meets Jimmy Garvin, and Koko B. Ware squares off against Ricky Steamboat! We will also get the first names announced for the King of the Ring tournament, and we will have a special sitdown interview with Rick Martel! See you next week!

You and your subtle digs at me.
Koko’s great but spunky sounds borderline inappropriate. A nice and easy setup for a match with HTM.
Didn’t see a Power Company loss coming but good on the Rougeaus. Sometimes they feel lost in the shuffle but this makes them stick out a bit.
Duggan vs. Backlund is a dream match I never wanted to see until now. Can’t wait to see how that one goes.
Blatantly calling out Andre for being a friendly giant is a surefire way to plant the seeds for the turn. It’s inevitable. I’m pumped for it!
Isn’t Rob Van Winkel Vanilla Ice? 2 minutes seems about right for Luger in this day and age.
I did see what you did there.
Oh nice! KOTR is on the horizon!
I’d say the Harts and RnRs could pull 5 stars without TV restrictions. One day we’ll surely see them try it.
Great interview segment without going the easy route of having it break down into a brawl. A Strap Match with the Brain caged above the ring is awesome.
Next week looks great. Koko vs. Steamboat sounds sweet.

6/14/86 - GCW Superstars (TAPED: 6/3/86) LOCATION: Mid-Hudson Civic Center - Poughkeepsie, NY
A packed show this week on GCW Superstars! Gorilla Monsoon & Mark Niemiller were on hands, Niemiller wearing a particularly flashy bowtie, which Monsoon had a good time poking fun at. Anyway, they previewed today's show, that will have 3 feature matches: Jim Duggan vs. Jimmy Garvin, Ricky Morton vs. Adrian Adonis, and Koko B. Ware vs. Ricky Steamboat! Bad News Brown will also be here, as will Barry Windham! They also mentioned the special interview with Rick Martel. Niemiller said he hoped Martel quits during the interview, as it will save him the embarrassment of quitting in Tacoma! Monsoon thought that was "highly unlikely." They concluded by throwing it to the ring and Howard Finkel!
MATCH #1 "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan vs. "Gorgeous" Jimmy Garvin (w/ Precious)
Jim Duggan is gearing up for a huge match at the Tacoma Dome on Tuesday when he wrestles Bob Backlund for a chance to be the #1 contender for the Television Title. Backlund was actually on commentary with Monsoon & Niemiller, basically putting over what a tough opponent Duggan is. Niemiller tried to stir the pot, of course, but Backlund maintained how much he respected Hacksaw and that they would have a competitive contest in Tacoma. Speaking of competitive contests, Duggan was in one with Jimmy Garvin, who used his ring finesse to counter Duggan's raw power. Near the end of the contest, Precious tried to get involved on Gorgeous Jimmy's behalf, but Backlund left the announce position and prevented her from doing so. Garvin yelled at Backlund to mind his own business. When Garvin turned back around, it was face first into the Three Point Stance from Duggan and this one was over.
Jim Duggan pinned Jimmy Garvin with the Three Point Stance in 0:07:46. Rating: * 1/4
Duggan & Backlund shook hands after the match and it looks like we're going to have a good clean affair on Tuesday.
MATCH #2 Bad News Brown vs. AJ Petruzzi
Bad News Brown continues to be in the absolute worst mood imaginable. Why? It's hard to say. Probably just because he's a jerk. Either way, he bullied AJ Petruzzi en route to a quick and emphatic victory on Superstars.
Bad News Brown pinned AJ Petruzzi with the Ghetto Blaster in 0:01:28. Rating: -3/4*
SITDOWN INTERVIEW W/ RICK MARTEL
Next up we had a pre-taped interview that Monsoon conducted with Rick Martel earlier in the week. Martel is usually someone who will joke around and smile at least a little bit, but he was all business during this interview. He said that at Super Cade II, his whole life turned upside down. He said he had fought so hard for so long, coming back from several serious injuries including a severe neck injury which almost ended his career. He went through great adversity to rehab and get himself not only back, but to the top of the mountain in GCW. Super Cade II was supposed to be his night, his crowning, but Ricky Steamboat decided to come back and ruin that for him. Monsoon asked about his past relationship with the Dragon. Martel said he thought the two of them were friends. They had fought side-by-side in battles in the past, but this stab in the back was completely unexpected. But he mentioned that he's not one to get mad - he's one to get even. He promised Steamboat that he would regret his decision, and that he would make sure Steamboat uttered the words, "I quit" on Tuesday.
Back to live, Monsoon mentioned that he's never seen Martel so serious in all his career. Niemiller said he looked flat out scary and should be institutionalized.
MATCH #3 Ricky Morton (World Tag Team champion) vs. "Adorable" Adrian Adonis (w/ Jimmy Hart)
Ricky Morton is obviously a very skilled competitor, being one-half of the reigning World Tag Team champions, but he had an interesting challenge today as he was in singles competition against "Adorable" Adrian Adonis. The Rock 'N Roll Express have had run-ins recently with Adonis' stablemates, the Hart Foundation. Adonis is enough to deal with for anyone one-on-one, but it became worse for him when BRET HART & JIM NEIDHART showed themselves in the aisle. They didn't directly interfere, but their presence was a major distraction, leading to Adonis catching Morton with a short lariat and taking the fall.
Adrian Adonis pinned Ricky Morton after a short lariat in 0:05:48. Rating: **
Jimmy Hart called for his tag team to start down toward the ring, but they never quite made it as ROBERT GIBSON sprinted passed them with a chair in hand for good measure! This allowed Morton to recover, and none of the First Family wanted anything to do with a chair-wielding RNR Express.
MATCH #4 Barry Windham vs. Jerry Monti
I don't know why Barry Windham has such a big chip on his shoulder, but he is definitely wrestling like he has something to prove. He has a huge opportunity on Tuesday when he wrestles his friend and mentor Ted DiBiase for the Intercontinental Title, and you can tell by his focused dismantling of Jerry Monti today that he is not going to let that opportunity pass him by. I am expecting a great contest in Tacoma.
Barry Windham pinned Jerry Monti with the Superplex in 0:03:02. Rating: * 1/4
LIVE EVENT REPORT W/ GENE OKERLUND
Mean Gene was here with a twinkle in his eye and a song in his heart to give us this week's Live Event Report. Okerlund always gets a little giddier when we get close to a big event, and he was like a schoolgirl talking about GCW's debut in Tacoma, WA. He talked about all the big matches, including bringing in The Barbarian for an "interview." I put that in quotations because every question Okerlund asked him, The Barbarian clearly couldn't understand what he was saying. At the end of it, Barbarian grunted and walked away, leaving Mean Gene a little flustered. He was able to announce the rematch that Jimmy Hart wanted from a couple of weeks ago, as his Power Company will meet the Rougeaus in tag team action.
As promised last week, Okerlund did have the first names announced for the King of the Ring tournament as well. A total of 16 men will compete for the right to be called King, and the first 4 officially set for the one-night tournament are Bob Backlund, Honky Tonk Man, Koko B. Ware, & Adrian Adonis. Okerlund promised there would be more names announced next week on Superstars.
MATCH #5 "The Birdman" Koko B. Ware vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan)
Koko B. Ware has to be excited to be part of the King of the Ring, but he had a big challenge in today's final match as he was taking on Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat. People don't like this new attitude of Steamboat (namely Rick Martel), but one can't argue with his credentials. He's a former 3-time Intercontinental champion, and if you said he was the best pure wrestler in the world, it would be hard to find an argument against that. Koko may not have those credentials yet, but the Birdman is fun and flashy and has a freakin' giant bird with him at ringside. Koko showed that he can hang with the top echelon of superstars in GCW, and has a bright future as a potential future champion, but he would have to settle for merely pushing one of the world's best to the limits. Koko narrowly was defeated, but he got hit with the Flying Crossbody Press and this one was in the books.
Ricky Steamboat pinned Koko B. Ware with the Flying Crossbody Press in 0:08:53. Rating: *** 3/4
Join us next week on GCW Superstars! We will have the results from Tacoma, as well as more names announced for King of the Ring. Sgt. Slaughter & Stan Hansen will be in action, as will Honky Tonk Man. The feature match will pit Bob Backlund, who may possibly be #1 contender for the TV Title by this point, taking on Bret "Hitman" Hart! And we will have an interview with the World champion, whether it be King Kong Bundy or Hulk Hogan! See you next week, everyone!

6/17/86 - Tacoma Dome - Tacoma, WA
MATCH #1 Intercontinental Title Match Ted DiBiase (c) vs. Barry Windham
This was the shot that Barry Windham wanted, so now it was put up or shut up time. Windham has had a major league chip on his shoulder and Ted DiBiase was willing to put his Intercontinental Title on the line against his friend in order to hopefully save their friendship. This started out as a great mat wrestling match, but when neither man could get a clear advantage, tempers really started to flare. The match turned into a brawl after DiBiase slapped Windham across the face after an exchange, looking to knock some sense into him. The mat wrestling was gone and now we had a pier sixer on our hands. Kudos to Dick Kroll for giving them the leeway to attempt to settle these issues. DiBiase looked to have a win when he locked on the Cobra Clutch, but Windham was quick to counter it with a jawbreaker and then a powerslam. After a grueling contest, Windham placed DiBiase on the top rope and set him up for the Superplex. DiBiase had a counter of his own and turned it into a cross-body block. Windham hit his head hard and DiBiase just managed to hold his shoulders down for the 3, retaining the championship in the process.
Ted DiBiase pinned Barry Windham after a cross-body block in 0:14:11. Rating: **** 1/4 (Ted DiBiase retained the GCW Intercontinental Title.)
This was a great match, and I don't think anyone would say that Windham didn't step up to the plate. DiBiase offered Windham a handshake after the match. The fans cheered Windham on to do the right thing, but after a lot of hesitation, Windham left the ring frustrated to a chorus of boos. DiBiase shrugged his shoulders with a look of disappointment on his face.
MATCH #2 The Rougeau Brothers vs. The Power Company (w/ Jimmy Hart)
Jimmy Hart had The Power Company way more focused this time around against The Rougeaus. They got themselves upset in short order recently on Superstars because they were too busy posing. They got right to business tonight, and if anything this showed that when Dino Bravo & Hercules have their heads in the game, they are hard to beat. This match was more or less dominated by The Power Company who picked up the duke.
The Power Company (Dino Bravo and Hercules) defeated The Rougeau Brothers (Jacques Rougeau and Raymond Rougeau) when Bravo pinned J. Rougeau with the Side Suplex in 0:04:35. Rating: **
MATCH #3 "The Birdman" Koko B. Ware vs. Honky Tonk Man
After Honky Tonk Man maliciously assaulted Junkyard Dog by breaking his guitar over his head, there was no more ambiguity about what type of a person he is. In a word, he's a scumbag. Koko B. Ware, someone who is legitimately JYD's friend, did not much appreciate HTM's actions and challenged him over it, thus leading to this match. This match taught us a lot about Honky Tonk Man, namely that he is a very crafty individual. Koko seemingly had him on the ropes the entire contest, but HTM was merely suckering the Birdman in. HTM was hurt and stumbling near the ropes when Koko flew at him with a crossbody. HTM ducked and pulled the top rope down, causing Koko to crash to the floor. After that, this one was essentially over. Koko got a little offense in after that, but that tumble hurt him big time. Honky Tonk would hit the Shake Rattle'n'Roll and earn the victory.
Honky Tonk Man pinned Koko B. Ware with the Shake Rattle'n'Roll in 0:06:48. Rating: ** 1/2
MATCH #4 #1 Contender's Match for the Television Title Bob Backlund vs. "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan
Bob Backlund & Jim Duggan have both individually had close calls with Television champion Tully Blanchard, coming within an eyelash each of taking the championship. They also both felt they were due the next rematch. Jack Tunney suggested this one-on-one match between the two, and we got a rare fan favorite vs. fan favorite contest. Backlund had the experience edge and knew if he could keep this a strict wrestling match, he was more than likely going to win. Backlund did his best, but Hacksaw is an unorthodox opponent to say the least. He kept finding a way to get out of Backlund's holds and use his fists to even the odds. Backlund kept on his attack though and looked like he had things under control when he got Duggan in the Crossface Chickenwing. However, he couldn't fully lock it in as he couldn't get Hacksaw to the canvas. Duggan would get loose when he backed Backlund hard into the corner to break the hold, and then caught the former World champ with a high back bodydrop out of the corner. Duggan would capitalize with the Three Point Stance and get a huge win!
[WINNER GETS TELEVISION TITLE SHOT]: Number-One-Contenders-Match: Jim Duggan pinned Bob Backlund with the Three Point Stance in 0:09:02. Rating: ** 1/4
Unlike we saw in our opening match, Backlund actually was a good sport and shook Duggan's hand, wishing him luck in his upcoming TV Title shot. We have since found out that Duggan's title rematch will take place on the July 5 episode of GCW Superstars.
MATCH #5 Dos Caras/Hector Guerrero vs. Tully Blanchard (Television champion)/"The Enforcer" Arn Anderson (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan)
Hector Guerrero hadn't been seen in years before he made his recent return in Pittsburgh to assist the tag team partner of his injured brother. Hector was teaming tonight with Dos Caras to take on the two men who were involved in the match that Chavo Guerrero was hurt in, Arn Anderson & Television champion Tully Blanchard. Hector & Caras definitely came in with a lot of energy, but their teamwork was seriously lacking. Hector looked more focused on getting even with the men he perceived to have injured his family as opposed to getting along with his partner. It would lead to a miscue as Hector tagged himself when it looked like Caras had Blanchard under control. Caras questioned Hector about it, but Hector essentially yelled at Caras to get out of the ring. This miscommunication led to Hector turning around right into a big swinging neckbreaker from the TV champ, which was enough to secure the victory. Cooler heads would prevail after the match, but Hector & Caras are going to need to work on their tag team continuity if they're going to be as successful as the Mexican Eagles were.
The Heenan Family (Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard) defeated Dos Caras and Hector Guerrero when Blanchard pinned H. Guerrero after a swinging neckbreaker in 0:02:09. Rating: *
MATCH #6 I Quit Match Rick Martel vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan)
We thought after what we saw between these two last month that we had seen it all, but this was incredible. Now it may not have been quite the same match as last month, but the intensity was off the charts. I wish I could explain the look in Martel's eyes. It was… distant. He was so blinded by anger and rage that it was like he was on a different planet. Steamboat looked like he wanted to be anywhere else but in this I Quit match early on, but he did manage to weather the storm of Martel's attack in the opening minutes. Steamboat knew he was going to take a beating in this match, but he used Martel's aggression against him. The Dragon has also learned to be ruthless under the tutelage of Bobby Heenan, and he showed that in this one. However, no matter what Steamboat could come up with, when referee Tommy Young would ask Martel if he gave up, he would say nothing. Martel kept fighting back, and as you would expect in a blood feud, this match was chaotic.
The match was back and forth, but the momentum really swung when Steamboat went for the Flying Crossbody from the top rope to the floor, but crashed and burned when Martel moved. Martel strung together his offense, hitting Steamboat with a massive piledriver in the ring. Steamboat at this point was bruised, battered, had a cut over his eye, and looked to be in dire straights. Martel was all set to lock on the Boston Crab, which I can't imagine the Dragon wouldn't have gave it up in. However, Martel stopped, calmly grabbed the microphone from Tommy Young, and stoically said, "I quit."
I Quit Match: Ricky Steamboat defeated Rick Martel in 0:18:48. Rating: *** 1/4
Everyone looked equal parts shocked and confused at what had just happened. Martel quickly got out of the ring, and went straight to the back. Even Bobby Heenan looked like he couldn't believe what he just saw. Either way, Ricky Steamboat was victorious.
MATCH #7 The Barbarian vs. Big John Studd
After what had just happened in the previous match, Bobby Heenan was not at ringside with Big John Studd as he took on The Barbarian. After what happened in this match, Studd definitely could have used the guidance of the Brain. The Barbarian is undefeated, and he stayed that way after this match. That wasn't a big deal in its own right, but it was HOW The Barbarian won that was. The Barbarian completely dominated this match from bell to bell, which is a tremendous feat considering Big John Studd is a mountain of a man. Studd couldn't find a way to slow down The Barbarian and ate a savate kick to end this match.
The Barbarian pinned Big John Studd after a savate kick in 0:05:41. Rating: 1/2*
MATCH #8 The Road Warriors (w/ Paul Ellering) vs. Sgt. Slaughter/Stan "The Lariat" Hansen
We knew that this tag match was going to be a battle, but we didn't expect it to get violent in the way that it did. Referee Danny Davis had his work cut out for him as this was turning into a brawl right from the word go. It's hard to even describe what this match was. When these two teams hook up, it just becomes chaos. To Davis' credit, he let a lot go in this contest as the match could have easily been called a DQ at any point. When the match had "settled" slightly, Animal had the upperhand on Sgt. Slaughter on the floor. After throwing him into the railing, Animal tossed Slaughter back into the ring. While Davis checked on Slaughter and tried to keep Stan Hansen from getting at Hawk, two men jumped out of the crowd and started wailing on Animal! These men were big and nasty, and the taller of the two nailed Animal between the eyes with a steel chain! Animal was knocked loopy and got counted out.
Sgt. Slaughter and Stan Hansen defeated The Road Warriors (Hawk and Animal) when Slaughter defeated Animal by countout in 0:07:05. Rating: * 1/4 [The Russians interfered against Animal.]
When the dust had settled, we realized that the two men were former World champion IVAN KOLOFF and his nephew, NIKITA KOLOFF! No one even knew the Russians were here, let alone why they assaulted the Road Warriors. If I know Paul Ellering's troops though, they are not going to take this lying down.
MATCH #9 The Rock 'N Roll Express (World Tag Team champions)/Andre the Giant vs. The Hart Foundation/"Adorable" Adrian Adonis (w/ Jimmy Hart)
This was a bonus match not originally announced, and featured the tag team champions teaming with the Eighth Wonder of the World against member's of Jimmy Hart's First Family. The Hart Foundation in particular were fired up for this match, as they have come within an eyelash several times of winning the World Tag Team Titles, but they just haven't quite been able to get over the hump and defeat the Rock 'N Roll Express. Jimmy Hart clearly told his team to do everything they could to keep Andre the Giant out of the ring, and they did that as Andre never officially tagged in. He would play a huge part in the finish though. Adrian Adonis had Robert Gibson down in the ring, and instead of trying to go for the win, he decided it would be a good idea to taunt Andre. Adonis was waving at and taunting Andre, inching closer as he did so. When Adonis got up to Andre, he closed his eyes and blew Andre a kiss. Big mistake. Andre didn't give Adonis a kiss, but his fist did. Adonis took a huge bump backward. Gibson quickly hit a gutwrench suplex and got the flash pin.
The Rock 'N Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson) and Andre the Giant defeated The First Family (Adrian Adonis, Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart) when R. Gibson pinned Adonis after a gutwrench suplex in 0:10:05. Rating: ***
MATCH #10 World Title Strap Match King Kong Bundy (c) (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan) vs. "The Immortal" Hulk Hogan
The odds would finally be fair for Hulk Hogan. Before our main event could even be started, the shark cage was lowered and referee Tommy Young instructed Bobby Heenan to get in, as per the stipulations. Heenan was flat out refusing to, until Young whispered something to ring announcer Howard Finkel. Finkel announced that if Heenan didn't get in the shark cage, King Kong Bundy would be stripped of the World Title! Heenan protested mightily, but did get in the cage. As it was raised, you would think the Brain was about to pass out from fear. One man who wasn't afraid though was Hulk Hogan, who was finally going to get his fair shot at the World Title.
Even with Heenan directly out of the picture, it's not like this was going to be easy for the Hulkster. He still had perhaps the most dominant force in the history of GCW standing across the ring from him in the form of King Kong Bundy. And not only that, but he would be attached to him with a 12 foot leather strap. Hogan had intentions to rock Bundy with his brute strength at the beginning, even making use of the leather strap right away. He made a big time error though when he tried for a bodyslam way too early and collapsed under the weight of the colossal World champ. Bundy then went to work, doing anything he could think of to cause damage to the Hulkster's back and ribs. Heenan was thrilled but was careful not to celebrate too much as it would cause the cage to shake and he would shout in terror.
Hogan is nothing if resilient though, and when Bundy found nothing but turnbuckle on an avalanche attempt, the Hulkster knew this was his chance. Hogan put together some great offense, making great use out of the strap. Bundy was on the ropes and there was nothing the Brain could do about it. Gravity could though, as Hogan again tried a bodyslam and failed. We thought it was curtains for Hogan when Bundy hit the Big Splash that has put so many others away. But not only did Hogan kick out, but he immediately got back to his feet! Bundy couldn't believe it as Hogan stared him down. Bundy hit a right hand, but Hogan shook it off. Another, same result. The third one caused Hogan to start convulsing - he was officially Hulking up. Nothing Bundy could do would slow Hogan down, who would eventually hit that bodyslam he had been trying, hit the Big Leg Drop, and made the cover for the 1-2-3.
Strap Match: Hulk Hogan pinned King Kong Bundy with the Big Leg Drop in 0:14:20. Rating: 3/4* (Hulk Hogan won the GCW World Title.)
Ladies and gentlemen, the era of Hulkamania has officially arrived! The arena exploded (not literally - that would be a huge story) as Hogan was declared the World champion. Bobby Heenan was almost in tears as he realized that he no longer was managing the World champion. It got even worse for him as the cage started lowering and Bundy was out! As the cage landed in the ring, Heenan, who had fought so hard to not go into the cage to begin with, was now holding the door shut so Hogan couldn't get a hold of him! Problem for him was, the Hulkster is much stronger than the Brain, and he had no issues ripping the door open. Heenan begged for his life, but Hogan rocked him with two big right hands. An atomic drop propelled Heenan over the top rope to the floor. The show ended with Hulk Hogan celebrating his title win by posing for the raucous Tacoma crowd.
Card rating: * 3/4

Wow, this is just TV. Throwing some top notch PRO WRESTLING at us for free!
Good ole’ boy Backlund inadvertently lends a helping hand to Duggan but it was a fair move. Duggan & Backlund is such a clash of styles it should make for a hell of a match.
His name is Bad News. He doesn’t have a good mood.
Nice segment with Martel. You know it’s serious it is a sit-down. If Martel/Steamboat doesn’t get 5 stars you’re a terrible booker, Ryan.
Nice easy build to the Harts/RnRs angle.
So Jerry Monti changes one letter in his name jumps ship to do jobs for GCW, eh? He’ll never see the lights in Studio 2 ever again!! I’m glad Windham dismantled him!
Best opening sentence to a Live Event Report yet. The build for KOTR begins! Exciting times!
One hell of a main event! It’s crazy to think this match probably never happened IRL (I say that without doing ANY research). Heel Steamboat has a real shot at doing HUGE things in this Universe.

Tacoma Dome! They’re hanging from the rafters!!
That’s how you set the pace for an event. I’m realizing how insane your roster is when it comes to in-ring work. Deebs and Windham are probably top 10 in the World at this point. I don’t know where this is going but I like that things haven’t settled yet.
Power Company get their win back and should continue to climb. Dino’s record with tag teams means they should at least get themselves in a position for a title shot, if not win them one day.
HTM is funny in the way that he will always get his ass kicked. By everyone. But somehow win without earning it. I think you’ll have a lot of fun writing him.
Woah! Duggan with a clean win over the LEGENDARY Backlund. This is huge or I’m looking too much into it. Duggan is in the best position he’ll ever be in to take the TV title. And Backlund may officially have moved into his next role in the Universe. But with Backlund I can never tell.
Hector hasn’t been seen in years? Dick. It doesn’t seem like this Mexican duo will last very long. Arn & Tully on the other hand are just getting started.
Holy. Shit. Did Rick Martel just shoot QUIT? Look, if he did, I don’t blame him. You handcuffed him and put a ceiling over him! The guy should be World Champion already! One hell of a writeup for the match. Had goosebumps when it started. The next TV when this is addressed will do HUGE ratings where I’m sitting.
Barbs pulling a decisive win over Studd is no small deal. Studd has an excuse since Heenan wasn’t there but come on, that’s impressive no matter how you look at it.
Who are you trying to kid by saying you didn’t expect this to get violent?! You’re talking the Road Warriors against two guys I could actually see killing a man in the ring if they had to. Wow, and The Russians have arrived!! They chose some big targets straight away, too! Awesome stuff!
Jesus, Ryan. You think GCW is such a commodity that you don’t even need to advertise Andre to sell out the Tacoma Dome?! This match makes me realize how much I would enjoy a program between Adonis and Andre.
Tough night for Heenan gets worse as he has to get in the cage now. Wow! I was totally invested in that finish. Hulkamania was inevitable and you pulled the trigger tonight. I’m honestly really looking forward to how you handle this (and how you keep Hogan as an employee since everyone quits on you).
Awesome show! It feels like we both are at important milestones in our companies and some big things and changes are happening in the near future.

6/21/86 - GCW Superstars (TAPED: 6/3/86) LOCATION: Mid-Hudson Civic Center - Poughkeepsie, NY
Gorilla Monsoon & Mark Niemiller welcomed everyone to GCW Superstars, and he could hardly wait to tell everyone that we have a new World champion in GCW, and his name is Hulk Hogan! Niemiller said it was a travesty, and that if Bobby Heenan hadn't been locked in that cage, there was no way this would have happened. Monsoon said we would see the aftermath of Hogan's World Title win later on the show. Also on today's show, Ted DiBiase is in action, as are the Unholy Alliance. Our feature match will pit former World champion Bob Backlund against Bret "Hitman" Hart!
Before we got to our first match, Bobby Heenan invaded the broadcast area and was beside himself, looking like he hadn't slept since June 17. He was yelling incoherently about a conspiracy, Hulk Hogan, and how Jack Tunney was out to get him. The Brain could barely pull himself together and looked on the verge of a heart attack, but did end by saying he was going to get his revenge on Hogan before heading to the ring for our opening contest.
MATCH #1 Hector Guerrero/Dos Caras vs. "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson/Tully Blanchard (Television champion) (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan)
Heenan wasn't of much help for his men during this match, but Anderson & Blanchard didn't need it for this rematch from Tacoma against Hector Guerrero & Dos Caras. Guerrero & Caras didn't really get along too well the first time around, and it was obvious Hector wasn't looking to make it work today. Caras was doing what he could in the ring, but Guerrero kept yelling at him from the apron. Eventually Caras had enough and confronted Guerrero about it. Caras went to turn back toward the action, but Guerrero reached in, grabbed Caras by the head, and dropped him throat first on the top rope. Caras stumbled into the Slingshot Suplex from the TV champ and this one was over.
The Heenan Family (Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard) defeated Dos Caras and Hector Guerrero when Blanchard pinned Dos Caras with the Slingshot Suplex in 0:06:49. Rating: ** 3/4
Monsoon couldn't believe the audacity of Hector Guerrero, turning on his brother's partner like that. Niemiller said Caras was just going to hold him down and got exactly what he deserved.
MATCH #2 Non-Title Match Ted DiBiase (Intercontinental champion) vs. Jack Kruger
Word going around the locker room is that the situation between Ted DiBiase & Barry Windham is really getting to the IC champ. If that's true, DiBiase wasn't showing it here. DiBiase picks up an easy win on Superstars.
Ted DiBiase pinned Jack Kruger after a figure-four leglock in 0:03:06. Rating: * 1/2
MATCH #3 Honky Tonk Man vs. Jimmy Kent
Honky Tonk Man has shown his true colors, and that is that he's a jerk. After HTM made short work of Jimmy Kent, HTM bragged about how he beat Koko B. Ware and told the crowd he was going to give them all what they wanted to see, and that's to sing and dance for the live audience. HTM grabbed his guitar and the crowd exploded into cheers, which HTM mistakenly thought was for him and he told the crowd, "Thank you very much!" What they actually were cheering for was JUNKYARD DOG, who got in the ring behind HTM. JYD spun HTM and clocked him with a right hand. Honky Tonk quickly got out of the ring before JYD could do any more damage, but his guitar wasn't as fortunate. JYD proceeded to destroy the guitar, which Niemiller immediately declared should put him in jail. Monsoon said HTM was lucky this was all that happened to HTM today.
Honky Tonk Man pinned Jimmy Kent with the Shake Rattle'n'Roll in 0:03:01. Rating: 1/2*
MATCH #4 Sgt. Slaughter/Stan "The Lariat" Hansen vs. Max Blue/Les Thornton
Well, this was a massacre. Max Blue & Les Thornton may be dead. Only time will tell.
Sgt. Slaughter and Stan Hansen defeated Max Blue and Les Thornton when Hansen pinned Blue with the Lariat in 0:04:17. Rating: 1/2*
JESSE VENTURA INTERVIEWS THE UNHOLY ALLIANCE
After Slaughter & Hansen tossed the carcasses of Blue & Thornton out of the ring, Jesse "the Body" Ventura joined the Unholy Alliance in the ring for an interview. Ventura talked about the dominance displayed, but Hansen grabbed the mic and started yelling a lot of incoherent things, mostly about doing bad things to Hawk & Animal. Slaughter was far more articulate, saying that they wouldn't be done with the Road Warriors until those maggots were dead and buried. They were joined by THE RUSSIANS, who made it clear right away that this wasn't a social call. Ivan Koloff told the Unholy Alliance they were waiting for their thank you and that a new dominant team was on the scene. Slaughter & Hansen didn't take too kindly to that and we looked like we were going to have quite the clash take place. We did, but it was instigated by THE ROAD WARRIORS as Hawk & Animal ran down to ringside and threw punches at whoever was in the way! We had a huge 6-man brawl on our hands that took a cavalry of officials to break up. Monsoon pondered on how these 3 teams could possibly be contained, and Niemiller said he hopes they aren't because he wants to see them tear each other apart.
LIVE EVENT REPORT W/ GENE OKERLUND
"Mean" Gene Okerlund was anything but mean as he was nice enough to present the Live Event Report. We're not far off from the King of the Ring, just over 3 weeks away. Okerlund went over the 16-man single elimination tournament format, and also brought up that Bob Backlund, Honky Tonk Man, Koko B. Ware, & Adrian Adonis had been previously announced. Okerlund gave us 6 more confirmed names for the tournament: Junkyard Dog, Jimmy Garvin, The Barbarian, Bad News Brown, Intercontinental champion Ted DiBiase, and Okerlund's guest today, Barry Windham. Windham said he was excited for the tournament and was going to make his way through the tournament. Okerlund asked him if he wanted to face DiBiase considering the IC champ just beat him in Tacoma. Windham said he hoped that he gets a chance to meet DiBiase one more time, because he promises he won't lose by a fluke this time and prove he is the better man. Okerlund was taken aback and asked Windham if he and DiBiase were still even friends. Windham simply said, "You can think whatever you want to think" before walking off.
Okerlund had one more announcement to make, and that was for another big show taking place in July. This one would be on July 26 as GCW is returning to Philadelphia at the Spectrum! Not only that, Okerlund was just giddy to announce the first matches. He said that he had been in contact with President Jack Tunney during the commercial break, and because of what took place earlier on the program, there would be an interesting set of matches. The Road Warriors, Sgt. Slaughter & Stan Hansen, and The Russians will all compete in a series of matches. Since these 3 teams want to beat the stuffing out of each other, GCW is going to allow them to. There will be 3 individual matches where each team will compete once against the other 2. All 3 teams have issues with each other, and they're going to get a chance to work those issues out in Philly.
MATCH #5 Bob Backlund vs. Bret "Hitman" Hart (w/ Jimmy Hart)
Our featured contest was a great technical match between Bob Backlund & Bret "Hitman" Hart. Hart is primarily a tag team wrestler, but this match showed he may have a future in the singles division as well. A couple of minutes into the match, JIMMY GARVIN came down and interrupted the commentary, essentially saying he was going to make Backlund pay for getting into his business in his recent match with Jim Duggan. Garvin left as quickly as he arrived, obviously not wanting to make Backlund pay now. Bret Hart put in a great showing, but in singles competition, he's just not quite on the former World champion's level yet as Backlund picks up the win to end today's wrestling content.
Bob Backlund made Bret Hart submit to the Crossface Chickenwing in 0:11:09. Rating: *** 3/4
HULK HOGAN CELEBRATES BEING THE NEW WORLD CHAMPION
To close the show, we cut to this past Tuesday in Tacoma and the aftermath of Hulk Hogan winning the World Title. This is back in the locker room, and the atmosphere is jovial to say the least. Hogan is joined by many of the top fan favorites, including Ricky Morton, Robert Gibson, Junkyard Dog, Bob Backlund, Koko B. Ware, and most notably Andre the Giant, who pours a large bottle of champagne over the Hulkster's head. Gene Okerlund was on hand to interview Hogan, congratulating him on his big win. The interview itself didn't have a lot of substance, but it did have power, officially declaring this the start of the era of Hulkamania. Hogan said he planned on being a fighting champion, and Hulkamania would take professional wrestling to new heights.
UPCOMING EVENTS
!!! BREAKING NEWS !!!
After this show aired, we learned that Bobby Heenan, on behalf of his client King Kong Bundy, has enacted the clause in the contract for his World Title rematch. This match will take place during the King of the Ring event on July 14. And if that wasn't big enough, we learned the match will take place inside the confines of a steel cage!
Join us next week on Superstars, where we will see Lex Luger in action, as well as Junkyard Dog! King Kong Bundy will compete, and we will also see The Barbarian. And our feature match will pit the Rougeau Brothers against the in-ring debut of the vicious Russians! And in what is sure to be explosive, Intercontinental champion Ted DiBiase will appear on the Flower Shop! So long everyone!

I hope the Heenan/Hogan feud goes on for eternity like IRL. Heenan can do so much for Hogan for as long as the two are working together.
Those Guerrero’s can’t be trusted. Seems like Dos Caras my have outstayed his welcome in GCW but I’m all for a good, short lucha rivalry.
Dibiase is a professional. He’s not going to let the personal issues with Windham effect the ass whooping he gives Jack Kruger on Superstars.
Great segment with HTM and JYD. I love this feud!
I’m wondering if Okerlund is gonna have an update regarding funeral arrangements for Max and Les.
The Russians are crazy for getting in the middle of the Unholy Alliance and Road Warriors. Will make for quality violence in the near future though.
“Nice” Gene just doesn’t have the same ring to it. Windham is a man of mystery but easily a favorite to win KOTR. The Spectrum needs to be reinforced to contain the series of matches Gene just confirmed!!
Bret Hart in ’86 is impressive already. I like Backlund getting back his win here on TV.
Historic segment here with the Hulkster, Andre, and champagne. God I love this era of pro wrestling!
Heenan and Bundy couldn’t wait, could they? And in a Steel Cage no less! KOTR should be tremendous.

6/28/86 - GCW Superstars (TAPED: 6/3/86) LOCATION: Mid-Hudson Civic Center - Poughkeepsie, NY
A HUGE BRAWL ERUPTS BEFORE THE SHOW BEGINS
The show opened with some footage from before the show went on the air. The Road Warriors & Paul Ellering are shown getting out of their car arriving at the arena, but they're jumped right away by SGT. SLAUGHTER & STAN HANSEN! Hansen smashes Hawk's head on the trunk while Slaughter slammed Animal on the hood of the vehicle. Ellering distracts the two enough for Hawk & Animal to mount a comeback, but Slaughter kicked Animal low to wipe him out. Hawk tried to fight both men off, but ultimately was overwhelmed as the Unholy Alliance suplexed him through the windshield of the car! Officials and security arrived to restore order but the damage had clearly been done.
We cut to Gorilla Monsoon & Mark Niemiller and Monsoon said surely there will be fines levied against Slaughter & Hansen for their heinous actions. Niemiller said Monsoon was probably right, but, "Do you think the Unholy Alliance care?" Niemiller said they were making a statement, plain and simple. Monsoon commented that the Road Warriors are obviously shaken up but they're more angry than hurt. Niemiller corrected Monsoon by saying they're more crazy than hurt. They moved onto today's show, which will feature Lex Luger in action, as well as The Barbarian! Former World champion King Kong Bundy will be here too and the Rougeau Brothers will take on newcomers, the Russians! All that and more on Superstars!
MATCH #1 Junkyard Dog vs. Tony Park
As JYD made his entrance, he cut an insert promo on Honky Tonk Man. He revealed that he was told today that his first round opponent at the King of the Ring would be HTM, and he couldn't wait to give him the thumpin' he deserves. If JYD was looking ahead to KOTR, he didn't show it as he made easy work of Tony Park.
Junkyard Dog pinned Tony Park with the Thump Powerslam in 0:02:01. Rating: -1/2*
MATCH #2 "The Total Package" Lex Luger (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan) vs. Bob Boyer
Since Lex Luger has come back from his suspension, he has clearly had a chip on his shoulder, being more aggressive than he was before. Luger continued that trend against Bob Boyer, brutalizing him before putting him away with a massive clothesline.
Lex Luger pinned Bob Boyer after a clothesline in 0:03:37. Rating: DUD
As we have seen before, Luger decided to take liberties after the match, stomping away at the hapless Boyer. Luger picked Boyer up in the Torture Rack as Monsoon screamed at ringside for somebody to come down and put an end to this madness. Well someone did, but it was a huge surprise as KERRY VON ERICH rushed to the ring, kicked Luger in the midsection to make him drop Boyer, and then absolutely CLOCKED the Total Package with the Discus Punch! Luger wisely spilled to the floor and retreated up the ramp. Luger couldn't believe it, and the fans were going crazy to see Von Erich back in GCW! Von Erich grabbed the mic and told Luger if he wanted to pick on somebody, come pick on him. Luger moved as if he was going to get back in the ring, but Bobby Heenan convinced him to retreat to the back, much to the chagrin of Von Erich. Niemiller called Von Erich a madman and said he had no right to put his nose in Luger's business.
HECTOR GUERRERO TRIES TO EXPLAIN HIS RECENT ACTIONS AGAINST DOS CARAS
We cut to the back where Lord Alfred Hayes was standing by with Hector Guerrero. Hayes wanted to get answers from Hector about why he turned his back on Dos Caras. Hector said it was simple - Caras tried to steal his familia. Hector said there is no closer family in wrestling than the Guerreros, and Caras tried to interject himself in the middle of them. "You're not like the Guerreros, Caras. Our family legacy is the thing of legend in Mexico. Your family is a mere footnote." Hayes asked Hector if he blamed Caras for Chavo Guerrero's recent injury. Hector said of course. He said the injury was directly because of Dos Caras' carelessness, and that he would pay for it.
MATCH #3 The Barbarian vs. Ricky Thompson
Watching The Barbarian dominate an opponent is nothing new. What was new was the fact the as this match began, BOBBY HEENAN came down to ringside to watch the action. If Barbarian noticed Heenan was there, he paid him no mind as he devastated Ricky Thompson, possibly pushing him into looking at a new vocation. The Brain did get The Barbarian's attention after the match by giving him a big round of applause, but The Barbarian just looked on confused, trying to mimic him as we went to commercial.
The Barbarian pinned Ricky Thompson with the Diving Headbutt in 0:04:22. Rating: -1/4*
THE FLOWER SHOP W/ SPECIAL GUEST TED DIBIASE
Back from break, The Flower Shop was all set up as "Adorable" Adrian Adonis & Jimmy Hart welcomed their guest, Intercontinental champion Ted DiBiase. Adonis began his line of questioning by obviously trying to bait DiBiase, asking him how he could treat his friend Barry Windham so poorly. DiBiase said nothing is further from the truth. He said he takes the role of Windham's mentor very seriously and he has always been there for him, and will always be there for him. This is when Windham himself came out. "Always there for me, Ted? Always there for me?" Windham railed into DiBiase, saying how selfish he has been. Windham brought up how they were supposed to go after the World Tag Team Titles when DiBiase arrived, but instead, DiBiase left him high and dry when he became the Intercontinental champion. DiBiase said he was sorry if Windham was hurt by that, but he wasn't going to apologize for his personal success. Windham said he didn't want an apology, but he wanted to put DiBiase on notice. He said he hoped they crossed paths in the King of the Ring, because he was going to show him who the better man was. DiBiase actually said he hoped they met too, so he could show him that they're still friends. It looked like cooler heads were going to prevail, but when DiBiase turned to leave, Windham grabbed a vase off the set and smashed it over the back of DiBiase's head! Well if there were any questions about Windham's true colors, they were answered now. Monsoon commented that Windham was a degenerate, whereas Niemiller of course said DiBiase got exactly what was coming to him.
TED DIBIASE CAN'T WAIT TO GET HIS HANDS ON BARRY WINDHAM
After the commercial, Lord Alfred Hayes tried to catch up with Ted DiBiase after he had just been attacked by Barry Windham. DiBiase is holding a bloody bandage on the back of his head, but he doesn't seem to be feeling the pain. DiBiase doesn't even give Hayes a chance to speak before he says that he hopes, no - he PRAYS that Windham makes it far enough in the King of the Ring to cross paths, because he is going to beat some respect out of him.
LIVE EVENT REPORT W/ GENE OKERLUND
"Mean" Gene Okerlund's complexion shows that he hasn't been out getting a tan now that summer has arrived, because he's too busy keeping us up to date on the Live Event Report! The first big news he was able to report is that he had the full listing of the 8 first round matchups for July 14th's King of the Ring tournament. A graphic displayed showing the following:
Junkyard Dog vs. Honky Tonk Man Barry Windham vs. Hector Guerrero Jim Duggan vs. Adrian Adonis Dos Caras vs. Bad News Brown Koko B. Ware vs. Lex Luger The Barbarian vs. Big John Studd Bob Backlund vs. Jimmy Garvin Ted DiBiase vs. Arn Anderson
The stage is set for a fantastic tournament to crown the next King.
Okerlund did have one more match to announce for the Philadelphia show on July 26, and that is a battle royal. But this isn't just a regular battle royal, but rather a battle royal for a HUGE opportunity. The winner of this battle royal will earn a shot at the World Title. But not only that, he will earn that shot at a show that will take place on August 28 at CNE Stadium in Toronto, ON, CA, at an event being dubbed "The Big Event." With the popularity of wrestling exploding, GCW is expecting upwards of 60,000 fans at The Big Event, so this title match is of mammoth proportions! Other matches for this event will be announced as we get closer.
MATCH #4 The Rougeau Brothers vs. The Russians
This was the in-ring debut of The Russians, who unexpectedly made a surprise debut by attacking The Road Warriors in Tacoma. We still haven't received any reasoning for that, but with guys like the Koloffs, I don't think a reason is necessary. Their opponents would be The Rougeau Brothers, who were more than up to the challenge of the Commies. It has been a considerable amount of time since we saw Ivan Koloff, who is a former World champion, but he is as vicious as ever. And after seeing this match, I'd say there's a chance that Nikita Koloff is even more vicious! The Rougeaus tried to use their speed, but they were more or less mauled in this contest. It also didn't help that Ivan Koloff smashed Raymond Rougeau with a steel chain when the referee was distracted, which is going to keep anyone down. Monsoon said that you might not agree with their tactics, but it's hard not to believe that The Russians are going to cause chaos in GCW. Niemiller added anyone bad enough to willingly anger the Road Warriors have to be considered threats.
The Russians (Nikita Koloff and Ivan Koloff) defeated The Rougeau Brothers (Jacques Rougeau and Raymond Rougeau) when I. Koloff pinned R. Rougeau after hitting him with a foreign object in 0:07:24. Rating: * 3/4
MATCH #5 King Kong Bundy (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan) vs. Mike Lucca
The result of our final match of the day was clearly never in doubt.
King Kong Bundy pinned Mike Lucca after a powerslam in 0:01:50. Rating: -1/4*
After the pinfall (which Bundy demanded be made into a 5 count), Bundy got on the microphone and called out Hulk Hogan, saying he didn't want to wait for their cage match! The crowd loved the idea, and someone else who loved the idea was Hogan himself, who came down to the ring! Hogan was obviously here ready to fight, and Bundy looked like he was too, but before they locked up, he bailed from the ring, eliciting a loud chorus of boos. Bundy and Bobby Heenan clearly trying to play mind games as they try to bring the World Title back to the Heenan Family.
Next week on Superstars is looking to be a packed show as we will see Kerry Von Erich in action, as well as Big John Studd! Ricky Steamboat will compete, and we will have two major feature bouts. First, The Russians will take on the Unholy Alliance in a preview of the round robin in Philly, and Jim Duggan will get his Television Title shot as he takes on champion Tully Blanchard!

Wild way to kick off the program! IRL ’86 Road Warriors were indestructible. I like that a team like the Unholy Alliance can legit make them look vulnerable. This feud rules.
I’m expecting full blown shenanz from the JYD/HTM KOTR match. A lot of initialisms in this feedback already.
Not much to say yet of Luger. I’m glad you’re writing for him, though. With Heenan, he’ll get into some deep stuff a lot sooner than later.
Duuuuuuuuuude… Kerry was on MY list! First actual signing I’m upset over. I swear, if KVE is just fodder for a Luger run I’ll end our friendship with a string of Facebook messages is poor taste. Why didn’t you just take Flair ya’ big jerk?!
I didn’t have a chance to write for a heel Guerrero, but it always seemed inevitable. I’m looking forward to Hector’s run.
Interesting development. The Barbarian is easily the hottest free agent in GCW right now and Heenan has every reason to be interested in him. But Barb may not feel the same about Heenan.
Holy crap I didn’t see such a blantant display of villainy from Windham coming. I love it! This has got to be the KOTR finals, right? Even if not, you’re booking going into the KOTR is much stronger than any IRL KOTR booking. So good!
Another note on Dibiase/Windham: really good chance to be the feud of ’86 as well as possible MOTY candidates when they collide. This should really set them both up for HUGE things.
Taking a gander at the brackets and it seems that Heenan may have been doing some homework rather than looking at a potential client. That tournament is stacked.
A battle royal for a title shot is such a wild card. We could have an obvious winner or a total wildcard winner to elevate a new star.
You’ve got some god damn bruisers in the tag division these days. The Russians are serious.
Bundy never struck me as a “head games” kinda guy, but hey, he’s already lost to The Hulkster so might as well try another route to regain the title. The cage match should be good but I don’t think the result is in question, which makes me look forward to the tournament much more.

7/5/86 - GCW Superstars (TAPED: 6/24/86) LOCATION: Mid-Hudson Civic Center - Poughkeepsie, NY
We're into the month of July as the summer is really heating up on GCW Superstars! A lot of great action today, with Big John Studd on the card, as well as Kerry Von Erich! And not one, but TWO big featured contests. The Russians are set to take on the Unholy Alliance, as well as Jim Duggan getting his Television Title shot against Tully Blanchard! Gorilla Monsoon & Mark Niemiller were pumped up for the show, so let's get right down to the ring for our first match with Ricky Steamboat!
MATCH #1 Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan) vs. Leroy Malion
Ricky Steamboat made short work out of Leroy Malion in our opener, clearly outclassing him. A beautiful German suplex put this one away. After the match, Bobby Heenan got on the microphone and declared The Dragon as the man to run everyone's hero Rick Martel out of town, and said that he would do it to anyone else who got in his way. Monsoon said that he hated to see Steamboat as a turncoat like this, but Niemiller added that Steamboat may be a jerk, but there's no doubting he's a dangerous and successful one.
Ricky Steamboat pinned Leroy Malion after a German suplex in 0:03:18. Rating: 3/4*
MATCH #2 Television Title Match Tully Blanchard (c) (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan) vs. "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan
Tully Blanchard has added much needed stability to the Television Title, amassing a very impressive almost one year reign thus far. He hasn't always used the most noble of means to retain said title, but you don't defend the championship as much as he has for so long and not be a top flight competitor. He would not have an easy defense today though, as he put the gold on the line against "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan. Duggan earned this title shot by pinning Bob Backlund in a match on June 17 in Tacoma, but this has been brewing for awhile. Blanchard tried to use stall tactics early on to try to coax the less experienced Duggan into making mistakes, but Duggan remained patience and was having fun punching the champ in the mouth whenever he could. The gameplan for Blanchard changed as Bobby Heenan decided later in the match that he was going to get involved because Tully couldn't seem to find the move to put the contest away. Heenan distracted referee Joey Marella which allowed ARN ANDERSON to jump in the ring and drop Duggan with a huge spinebuster! Anderson was laughing as he backed up the ramp, but he should have been paying attention so he could see BOB BACKLUND come behind him! Backlund spun Anderson around, clocked him with a forearm, and then put him in the Crossface Chickenwing in the aisle! Marella saw this and was yelling from the ring now to get some security down to break this up, thus completing missing the fact that Heenan slid Hacksaw's 4x4 into the ring. The Brain clearly was trying to get it to Blanchard, but Duggan had recovered and intercepted it. Blanchard begged off, but it didn't save him catching the wood to the midsection and then a hard shot to the back! Duggan ditched the evidence and hit the Three Point Stance. Marella turned around in time to make the 1-2-3, and ladies and gentleman, we had a brand new TV champ!
Jim Duggan pinned Tully Blanchard with the Three Point Stance in 0:09:40. Rating: ** 3/4 (Jim Duggan won the GCW Television Title.)
Backlund came down and joined Duggan to celebrate the win as the members of the Heenan Family returned to the back licking their wounds. Niemiller as beside himself and said Jack Tunney needs to reverse this decision as Hacksaw clearly used a weapon. Monsoon pointed out that Bobby Heenan was the one who introduced the weapon, and the referee's decision is final!
TULLY BLANCHARD LOSES HIS MIND AFTER LOSING THE TELEVISION TITLE
After a commercial break, we are backstage with Bobby Heenan, Arn Anderson, and the now FORMER Television champion Tully Blanchard. Blanchard is beside himself with anger, and the usually eloquent speaker was barely making sense as he yelled about Jim Duggan cheating him out of his title. Heenan was trying to calm Blanchard down, but Tully was having none of it as Heenan & Anderson chased after him.
MATCH #3 Big John Studd vs. Eric Cooper
Just a quick exhibition of the power of Big John Studd. Interesting to note that Bobby Heenan was not at ringside as he was still dealing with Tully Blanchard's breakdown.
Big John Studd pinned Eric Cooper with the Backbreaker in 0:02:05. Rating: -3/4*
CLIPS OF HULK HOGAN ON THE TONIGHT SHOW
A small highlight package was shown of World champion Hulk Hogan appearing this past week on The Tonight Show. A pretty light interview which featured Hogan teaching Johnny Carson all of his signature poses. Not a lot of substance, but does go to show the traction in pop culture that both Hulk Hogan and Global Championship Wrestling are garnering. Niemiller made a snide comment about how Hogan should have hit Ed McMahon with the Big Leg Drop, prompting a "Would you be serious!?" from Monsoon.
MATCH #4 "The Modern Day Warrior" Kerry Von Erich vs. Steve Johnson
We haven't seen him in quite some time in a GCW ring, but we got the official return of "The Modern Day Warrior" Kerry Von Erich. We got an insert promo as the match started where Von Erich said that he was looking to make his return this week anyway, but when he saw Lex Luger trying to take advantage of someone last week, he wasn't going to let him get away with it. He ended by saying if Luger wanted to take liberties with someone, he could try to take liberties with him. If Luger is going to take him up on that, he's going to have his work cut out for him as Von Erich looked great, getting an impressive win over Steve Johnson.
Kerry Von Erich pinned Steve Johnson with the Discus Punch in 0:02:58. Rating: 1/2*
LIVE EVENT REPORT W/ GENE OKERLUND
"Mean" Gene Okerlund was beaming as always as he presented the Live Event Report. Okerlund always gets excited as we get close to big events, and we're closing in on a few, starting with July 14's King of the Ring. The card is full and Okerlund ran it down, including the first round matchups in the tournament and the big steel cage rematch for the World Title between Hulk Hogan and King Kong Bundy. Okerlund also made sure to mention tickets are on sale for the show on July 26 in an old GCW stomping ground, The Spectrum in Philadelphia. He went over the 3 team round robin, the big battle royal for the World Title shot at The Big Event in August, and he added one more match. Just signed as a result of what we saw earlier today, President Jack Tunney has declared that former Television champion Tully Blanchard will take on a man who was instrumental in the decision of that match, Bob Backlund!
MATCH #5 The Russians vs. Sgt. Slaughter/King Kong Bundy (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan)
This was supposed to be a preview of what we would see in Philly, but the announcers let us know that Stan Hansen wasn't here. No reason was given, but it has to be pretty bad for him to not show up. Sgt. Slaughter didn't have to go out alone though, as KING KONG BUNDY volunteered to be his partner - not out of any friendship to Slaughter or hatred of the Russians, but because seeing Hulk Hogan on The Tonight Show put him in a bad mood. It will come as no surprise that this was a brawl from the word go. The fans had difficulty figuring out who they should cheer for, as we rarely get rulebreaker vs. rulebreaker matches. They may not have known who to cheer for, but they did enjoy these four beating the stuffing out of each other. The teams spent as much time on the outside as they did they did the inside, and eventually referee Danny Davis had no choice but to throw this one out.
Sgt. Slaughter and King Kong Bundy and The Russians (Nikita Koloff and Ivan Koloff) battled to a no contest in 0:10:58. Nikita Koloff tore his right ACL. He will be out for approximately 8 months. Rating: ** 1/2 (Stan Hansen no-showed.)
Nobody seemed to care that the bell had rung as the fight raged on, and they were soon joined by THE ROAD WARRIORS. We had a huge pier six brawl on our hands, and it got out of control, quite frankly. The show went off the air with the battle still going.
Be sure to join us next week as The Barbarian will be in action, as will Arn Anderson! The Power Company will compete, Bob Backlund will meet Jimmy Garvin, and Koko B. Ware takes on Honky Tonk Man! Have a good week, folks!

Gorilla and Mark aren’t the only ones pumped!
Heel Steamboat is the instant reminder I needed to remember why this Universe is so damn great.
Wow! New TV Champ! I very much approve of this switch because I dig Duggan. Pretty nifty that tactics employed by Tully throughout his entire run backfired on him here. Great stuff all around! Duggan keeps getting all kinds of rubs from Backlund, too.
Rare to see Tully lose his cool like THAT. This obviously is not the end of this feud.
Yeah, I doubt Studd really needed Heenan ringside for his match.
Big time Hogan making the talk show rounds eh? Hulkamania is growing.
I’ll never forgive you for Kerry but nice you didn’t have him lose to Steve Johnson, ironically the name of a guy I work with who I wouldn’t mind seeing Discus Punched.
Tully and Backlund added! I don’t know how you keep Backlund so interesting all the time.
Good god what a replacement in Bundy! Suitable because not many people can hang with the other three brutes. And an angry Bundy is no Bundy to F with. I approve of the finish but NOT THE INJURY! A no-show and injury in the same match? This is how you’re punished for heel vs. heel in TNM.
KOTR looks awesome! I need to get to simming and writing to get to that show asap.

7/12/86 - GCW Superstars (TAPED: 6/24/86) LOCATION: Mid-Hudson Civic Center - Poughkeepsie, NY
MATCH #1 The Power Company (w/ Jimmy Hart) vs. Mike Brown/Paul Berger
Every time we see Dino Bravo & Hercules team up, they impress even more. Bravo's history as a tag team specialist is well documented, and Monsoon commented he may have another World Tag Team Title partner on his hands here with Hercules. These two are powerful, and with Jimmy Hart at the helm, they are ruthless as shown by Hercules putting this one away after hitting Paul Berger with his steel chain for no good reason.
The Power Company (Dino Bravo and Hercules) defeated Mike Brown and Paul Berger when Hercules pinned Berger after hitting him with a foreign object in 0:03:50. Rating: -1/4*
BAD NEWS BROWN DOESN'T LIKE OUR NEW TELEVISION CHAMPION
We cut backstage where "Lord" Alfred Hayes was standing by with Bad News Brown. Brown had some harsh words for newly crowned Television champion "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan. Brown said that the fact that another "white boy" is TV champion is another example of the systematic way that GCW is trying to keep the black man down. Hayes looked about as uncomfortable as a man could in this situation. Brown said that if Tunney wasn't going to give him the opportunities he deserved, he was going to take them by force.
MATCH #2 "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan") vs. Rusty Brooks
It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Arn Anderson is the most talented mat technician in GCW. He picked Rusty Brooks apart in this match before finishing him off with the Gourdbuster. It's hard to imagine a world where the Enforcer doesn't hold championship gold sooner rather than later.
Arn Anderson pinned Rusty Brooks with the Gourdbuster in 0:02:56. Rating: ** 1/4
MATCH #3 Honky Tonk Man vs. Koko B. Ware
The Honky Tonk Man has shown exactly what type of person he is when he smashed a guitar over Junkyard Dog's head (something he is going to have to answer for in 2 days at King of the Ring), but someone who took exception to HTM as well is JYD's ACTUAL friend, Koko B. Ware. Koko is usually all about having a good time, but he looked a little more focused today taking on HTM. We knew Honky Tonk was going take any shortcuts he could, but we didn't expect him to do what he did. From the opening bell, HTM was on his heels. Koko was all over him, using his speed to stay on top of his opponent. HTM took a powder to the floor, but Koko was right there after him. Koko tossed HTM back in the ring, but then he noticed on the other side of the ring that JIMMY HART was harassing Frankie the parrot on the floor, yelling at him through the megaphone and causing the bird to squawk like crazy. Koko didn't like that as he ran over to confront the Mouth of the South. HTM had the referee's attention so he didn't noticed ADRIAN ADONIS grab Koko and throw him into the ringpost! Koko was possibly concussed, but was definitely knocked loopy enough that he couldn't make it back in the ring.
Honky Tonk Man defeated Koko B. Ware by countout in 0:06:20. Rating: ** 3/4 [Adrian Adonis interfered against Koko B. Ware.]
To make matters worse here, it was then revealed that Honky Tonk Man has joined the First Family. HTM is riding high now, but his tune is sure to change at King of the Ring.
MATCH #4 The Barbarian vs. Roger Kirby
The Barbarian keeps rolling along. He has yet to taste defeat in GCW, and he wasn't going to do so today. Roger Kirby looked scared out of his mind, and with good reason. There was someone else looking on, but not scared, but with dollar signs in his eyes. BOBBY HEENAN was down at ringside taking some mental notes. It seems obvious that Heenan would like to add Barbarian to the Heenan Family, but does Barbarian want to join?
The Barbarian pinned Roger Kirby with the Diving Headbutt in 0:03:01. Rating: DUD
LIVE EVENT REPORT W/ GENE OKERLUND
Most of the Live Event Report was about Monday's King of the Ring, but the effervescent "Mean" Gene Okerlund did have another announcement. He made mention of last week's main event that ended in a huge brawl. He said that unfortunately during the melee, newcomer Nikita Koloff suffered a torn ACL in his right knee and will be out for some time. Okerlund mentioned the 3-team round robin in Philadelphia, saying it will still go on, but the Russians have now been replaced with the Power Company. Not much else as far as news, just a preview of the King of the Ring tournament.
MATCH #5 Bob Backlund vs. "Gorgeous" Jimmy Garvin (w/ Precious)
Main event time between two competitors who have a long history. If you'll remember, it's Bob Backlund who brought Jimmy Garvin to GCW, but they are anything but friends these days. Garvin also feels that Backlund has interfered in his affairs recently, so we had this match on tap to close out today's show. Backlund is as no nonsense as they come, and Garvin did everything he could to get under Backlund's skin with his wild antics. The problem for Gorgeous Jimmy though was that even when he got the advantage, he'd keep up those antics. Backlund made him pay for it in a big way though, locking him in the Crossface Chickenwing and putting this one in the books to close the show. Now Backlund moves on to wrestle a man who is not at all pleased with him, former Television champion Tully Blanchard.
Bob Backlund made Jimmy Garvin submit to the Crossface Chickenwing in 0:06:26. Rating: * 1/2
You'll want to join us next week where we will have all the news and fallout from King of the Ring! We're also going to see Lex Luger compete, as well as World Tag Team champions the Rock 'N Roll Express! Bad News Brown will be in action, as too will Junkyard Dog. Our feature match will be a grudge back between former tag team partner Dos Caras and Hector Guerrero! See you next week!

It's been so long I forgot how much I loved The Power Company.
Yes! Is this the first obvious bit of racism we've seen from Bad News?
It's like a reintroduction of your roster. You've always had Arn but somehow I'm excited seeing his name again as if he just debuted.
HTM and Jimmy Hart were made for one another so of course it was just a matter of time before they got together. Jimmy is building quite the stable.
With that being said, it's interesting that Heenan is the only one interested in The Barbarian, or at least obviously interested.
Tough news about Nikita, especially because the Russians were getting a hell of rub. Not mad about The Power Company getting the nod but they're quite different than the worldly ass beaters that are the Unholy Alliance and the Road Warriors.
Amazes me how you still keep Backlund a good read after all these years.
After such a long break this TV helped get me excited about the future. Plus the KOTR is an awesome card to get caught up on the roster and happenings without any blowoffs to angles I may not remember so well.

7/14/86 - King Of The Ring - Foxboro, MA
MATCH #1 KING OF THE RING - FIRST ROUND Junkyard Dog vs. Honky Tonk Man (w/ Jimmy Hart)
We got the tourney kicked off with a match that has a lot of animosity behind it. JYD has been wanting this match with Honky Tonk Man for quite some time, and that over eagerness is probably what cost him tonight. JYD clearly couldn't wait to get his paws on the evil Elvis impersonator, but the cagey HTM used that to his advantage. Honky caught an over aggressive JYD coming in, rolled him up, grabbed a huge handful of tights, and stole a victory. If JYD is going to get even, it's going to have to be another day.
[FIRST ROUND]: Honky Tonk Man pinned Junkyard Dog with a rollup in 0:03:39. Rating: * 3/4
MATCH #2 KING OF THE RING - FIRST ROUND Barry Windham vs. Hector Guerrero
Barry Windham has a lot to prove tonight. He has put all his cards on the table when he attacked Ted DiBiase recently on the Flower Shop, but he had to put up or shut up in this tournament. He took on Hector Guerrero in the first round, and despite being thrown off his game early with Guerrero's lucha libre tactics, Windham grounded his opponent and picked up the win with a lariat.
[FIRST ROUND]: Barry Windham pinned Hector Guerrero a lariat in 0:07:42. Rating: *** 1/4
MATCH #3 KING OF THE RING - FIRST ROUND "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan (Television champion) vs. "Adorable" Adrian Adonis (w/ Jimmy Hart)
Bad News Brown more or less called out Jim Duggan on Saturday morning, and those two could be on a collision course in the quarterfinals. Hacksaw wouldn't have an easy task though as he took on the eccentric Adrian Adonis. Much like Adonis has had trouble with in the past, he starts out fast but then lets his flamboyant tactics take center stage. You don't do that with someone like Hacksaw, who caught Adonis with a huge bodyslam after Adonis spent a moment to blow a kiss at ring announcer Howard Finkel. The Three Point Stance came next, and Duggan punched his ticket to the quarters.
[FIRST ROUND]: Jim Duggan pinned Adrian Adonis with the Three Point Stance in 0:03:18. Rating: * 1/2
MATCH #4 KING OF THE RING - FIRST ROUND Dos Caras vs. Bad News Brown
Bad News Brown is always a tough opponent, but this was simply a mauling. Dos Caras looked like his heart wasn't into it after his recent issues with Hector Guerrero. Brown is not somebody you want to be distracted when you wrestle, and we saw that here. Brown just beat the stuffing out of Caras, eventually getting the win when he dropped Caras throat first on the railing outside to get the duke via countout. We're going to get our Duggan/Brown showdown in the quarters.
[FIRST ROUND]: Bad News Brown defeated Dos Caras by countout in 0:06:21. Rating: * 1/4
MATCH #5 KING OF THE RING - FIRST ROUND "The Birdman" Koko B. Ware vs. "The Total Package" Lex Luger (w/ Bobby "the Brain" Heenan)
Lex Luger came to King of the Ring in a bad mood. This entire match with Koko B. Ware Luger was yelling about Kerry Von Erich, who made his GCW return recently and prevented Luger from taking liberties on a local competitor on Superstars. This match gave us an idea of just what kind of potential Luger has, as he dominated the majority of this contest. Koko B. Ware is a damn fine competitor, and Luger was in total control en route to a win on the first round.
[FIRST ROUND]: Lex Luger pinned Koko B. Ware after a powerslam in 0:06:44. Rating: ** 1/4
MATCH #6 KING OF THE RING - FIRST ROUND The Barbarian vs. Big John Studd (w/ Bobby "the Brain" Heenan)
This one was an interesting affair, as this past Saturday on Superstars, Bobby Heenan was down at ringside for The Barbarian's match. Was he there just to scout for this matchup against Big John Studd, or was is he looking to employ The Barbarian in the Heenan Family? Either way, we wouldn't get that answer tonight as instead, we just saw a fight that was brutal but over quickly. These two got into a punching match right away, and it wasn't too long before they stumbled outside and both got counted out. When the fight was finally broken up, The Barbarian got in one last big kick that seemed to really rock Studd. Barbarian might not have moved on, but I'm sure for him, the fight alone was worth it.
[FIRST ROUND]: Big John Studd and The Barbarian battled to a double countout in 0:02:20. Rating: *
MATCH #7 KING OF THE RING - FIRST ROUND Bob Backlund vs. "Gorgeous" Jimmy Garvin (w/ Precious)
Bob Backlund has been trying to refocus himself recently, and a crowning as the King of the Ring would go a long way to put him in the right direction. Unfortunately for him, that refocus would get a little derailed. Backlund looked great in this one with Jimmy Garvin, grounding the Gorgeous One with his amateur wrestling acumen and got a nice victory. Unfortunately though, it was clear near the end of the match that Backlund was favoring his left elbow when he winced as referee Joey Marella raised his hand in victory. This wasn't looking good for Backlund's tournament prospects.
[FIRST ROUND]: Bob Backlund pinned Jimmy Garvin after a fisherman suplex in 0:04:05. Bob Backlund suffered a left elbow injury. He will be out for approximately 3 months. Rating: * 3/4
MATCH #8 KING OF THE RING - FIRST ROUND Ted DiBiase (Intercontinental champion) vs. "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson (w/ Bobby "the Brain" Heenan)
The final match of the first round ended up being a classic confrontation as the Intercontinental champion Ted DiBiase took on Arn Anderson of the Heenan Family. This was a tremendous pure wrestling match. Now clearly Anderson and Bobby Heenan are not above taking any advantage they can during a match, but there were no shortcuts in this one. The Enforcer is often overlooked in the Heenan Family, but he showed without a shadow of a doubt that overlooking him is a bad idea. DiBiase and Anderson had a great wrestling match, one Anderson almost won when he hit the Gourdbuster a little too closely to the ropes, allowing the IC champ to get his foot on the ropes. This would turn out to be Anderson's best chance, as he got himself stuck in the Cobra Clutch not long after. DiBiase may have won, but the Enforcer showed he may be in line for an IC Title shot going forward.
[FIRST ROUND]: Ted DiBiase made Arn Anderson submit to the Cobra Clutch in 0:11:29. Rating: *** 3/4
MATCH #9 KING OF THE RING - QUARTER FINALS Barry Windham vs. Honky Tonk Man (w/ Jimmy Hart)
Windham was laser focused in this, our first quarter final matchup. Honky is usually pretty good at getting in the head of his opponents, and he tried those antics early on. Windham treated him with a punch to the mouth. I wouldn't say this was an easy victory for Windham by any means as HTM is always up to cutting corners to get an edge. But the match result wasn't really in doubt here as Windham got an impressive win with a figure-four leglock.
[QUARTER FINALS]: Barry Windham made Honky Tonk Man submit to a figure-four leglock in 0:05:33. Rating: ** 1/2
MATCH #10 KING OF THE RING - QUARTER FINALS "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan (Television champion) vs. Bad News Brown
Bad News Brown has taken much umbrage with the fact that Jim Duggan is the new TV champion, feeling his not getting an opportunity is a sign of the systematic problem with black competitors not getting the same chances that white competitors do. Though most would agree that's probably not the case, for Brown that is his perceived reality, so he was coming into this quarter final match with a huge chip on his shoulder. Duggan wasn't going to back down from anyone challenging that he deserves his place, so we had ourselves a good old fashioned fight. Nothing at all pretty about this. I can tell you that even though this only lasted 5 minutes, both men are going to wake up sore tomorrow. The finish came as Brown grabbed a chain that he brought with him to the ring to use. Referee Tommy Young saw this as it was clear as day and he took it away. Problem was, as Young was disposing of the weapon, Brown then grabbed Duggan's own 4x4 and cracked the TV champ with it. Bad News disposed of the evidence and had stole himself a spot in the semi-finals.
[QUARTER FINALS]: Bad News Brown pinned Jim Duggan after hitting him with a foreign object in 0:04:59. Rating: 3/4*
And that would be the end of the quarter finals, as Lex Luger moved on thanks to the double countout between The Barbarian and Big John Studd…
[QUARTER FINALS]: Lex Luger won via default.
…and Intercontinental champion Ted DiBiase moved on as it was revealed that Bob Backlund suffered an elbow injury in his first round victory over Jimmy Garvin and would be unable to compete going forward in the tournament.
[QUARTER FINALS]: Ted DiBiase won over Bob Backlund via default.
MATCH #11 KING OF THE RING - SEMI-FINALS Barry Windham vs. Bad News Brown
This led to a problem for Bad News Brown. He had very little time to rest before his semi-final match (something he will be sure to complain about later) and he was going against an ultra focused Barry Windham. Brown is no dummy and knew Windham was going to be much fresher than him, so his best bet was going to be to put this one away as early as possible. Windham took a veritable barrage from Bad News in the opening minutes, but Windham played great defense to withstand this. Windham played the long game and managed to get the win after dodging a Brown charge in the corner and taking him down with a bulldog. Windham has done his part to get to the finals, and now awaits the winner of Ted DiBiase vs. Lex Luger.
[SEMI-FINALS]: Barry Windham pinned Bad News Brown after a bulldog in 0:09:12. Rating: **
MATCH #12 KING OF THE RING - SEMI-FINALS Ted DiBiase (Intercontinental champion) vs. "The Total Package" Lex Luger
Conspicuous by his absence was Bobby Heenan, who would normally be in Luger's corner but was back in the locker room with King Kong Bundy preparing for Bundy's chance to regain the World Title. This might not seem like a huge deal, but one has to remember how new Luger is to wrestling. He is a freakish athlete and clearly has a huge future, but he has very little experience. DiBiase took advantage of this fact several times throughout the match, coaxing Luger into making rookie mistakes. Luger would manage to use his raw power to come back and eventually even got the IC champ into the Torture Rack! The match took an unexpected turn at this point as BARRY WINDHAM ran down, but instead of going after DiBiase like one might expect, he distracted Luger. Luger yelled for Windham to get out of there, which allowed DiBiase to slip down and roll Luger up for the 1-2-3.
[SEMI-FINALS]: Ted DiBiase pinned Lex Luger after a roll-up in 0:09:34. Rating: **** 1/4
Luger was stunned as Windham jumped in the ring and blasted DiBiase with a kick to the head. Windham yelled at Luger that he wanted DiBiase and nobody was going to stand in his way. Luger looked ready to fight, but BOBBY HEENAN ran down and talked Luger into leaving the ring (probably a wise decision with the mood Windham is in). Windham yelled at referee Dick Kroll to ring the bell and get this match started.
MATCH #13 KING OF THE RING - FINALS Ted DiBiase (Intercontinental champion) vs. Barry Windham
DiBiase had to wrestle from behind from the opening bell, and you can't argue with what a good strategy this was by Barry Windham. DiBiase may have just wrestled a hard match against Lex Luger, but he also has had one less match overall than Windham in this tournament. Windham's prematch assault negated that advantage. Windham was absolutely malicious, and you could tell that with how personal this was, he wanted to not only beat DiBiase, but humiliate him. DiBiase wasn't about to just let that happen though. DiBiase did everything in his power to salvage this friendship, but Windham threw that out the window when he smashed a vase over his head. DiBiase was just as excited to turn this into a fight, and that's what we got. Over 22 minutes of back and forth action between two of the world's very best. Despite all of the ill will, there wasn't a lot of underhanded tactics involved. Neither man wanted to give the other any sliver of an excuse for why they lost. After an exhausting battle, the finish would come when DiBiase tried to lock on the Cobra Clutch. He couldn't quite get it locked in all the way as Windham fought him off, driving him backward into the turnbuckle. With DiBiase's wind out of him, Windham wasted no time hitting the Superplex. With that, Barry Windham is the 1986 King of the Ring.
[FINALS]: Barry Windham pinned Ted DiBiase with the Superplex in 0:22:04. Rating: **** 1/2
The crowd gave these two a standing ovation for their performance tonight, and rightfully so. As both men staggered to their feet, they looked like they were going to come to blows once more. DiBiase lowered his hands first, and then extended a hand to Windham. Despite everything that has happened, despite the absolute war these two just went through, you could tell there was still some mutual respect here. We all thought we would get the handshake, but then Windham spit right in DiBiase's face! DiBiase was filled with rage and went right after Windham, but officials and security were quick to intercede.
MATCH #14 WORLD TITLE CAGE MATCH "The Immortal" Hulk Hogan (c) vs. King Kong Bundy (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan)
After a brief intermission to put the cage up, we had our huge main event. This was for all intents and purposes the last chance for King Kong Bundy to regain the World Title, and this was perhaps the best scenario to do so. Bundy is a monster at any time, but if you're locked in a cage with him, look out. Bundy was rabid in the cage, and Hogan knew he had his work cut out for him. Hogan got early shots in, but the middle portion of this match largely focused on Bundy working over Hogan's ribs. The Hulkster was in a bad way, and it looked like it was only a matter of time before Hogan wasn't going to get back up. But if we have learned anything about Hogan in his time with GCW, it's that he is incredibly tenacious. Bundy squashed Hogan in the corner with the Avalanche, and then came crashing down with the Big Splash. Bundy got up and looked at Heenan, and didn't notice that Hulk Hogan got up behind him! The crowd was in a frenzy as Bundy turned back toward Hogan only to see the Hulkster on his feet. Bundy attacked, Hogan Hulked up, hit the big boot and Big Leg Drop, left the cage through the door, and retained his championship.
Cage Match: Hulk Hogan defeated King Kong Bundy by escaping the cage in 0:13:50. Rating: 1/4* (Hulk Hogan retained the GCW World Title.)
The fans were definitely sent home happy as Hogan posed for the crowd to celebrate his victory. He has thwarted King Kong Bundy, but there will be many more challenges on the horizon for the Hulkster.
Card rating: ** 1/4

Here we go!
Pretty straight forward here with HTM and JYD... every dog has his day though.
No doubt in my mind that Windham is making the finals if not winning this whole thing.
Adonis is an all time fav of mine but I really like Duggan in GCW.
I like the fact that Dos Caras's issues with Hector were a factor here. Obviously tough to get emotion across with a mask but as long as it's being discussed it's there. BNB and Duggan are gonna punch each other in the face a whole bunch!
Koko knows his role and does it well but because of this I don't think the win really does much for Luger. I'll reiterate, Luger does nothing for me. But neither did the RnR Express but you changed that and I look forward to seeing how you get me invested the Luger's Total Package...
Fair finish for two bruisers like Studd and Barb. Heenan clearly didn't get involved on Studd's behalf so maybe he's testing Barb here? Interesting stuff going on.
I love that TNM is gonna force you to use Backlund next round with an injury. It puts over Backlund's legit toughness.
Ted and Arn could steal the show on any night. Arn's destined for a singles run somewhere but I'm fine with waiting for it.
Onward and upward for Windham.
Okay, so Bad News has issues, sure. And that's fair for him to express them. But victories like this don't exactly legitimize his statements. And I love the disgruntled, angry black man for it.
Awwww boooooooooo! Backlund's not tough at all!
Windham vs. BNB is actually pretty intriguing. Quite a clash of styles, though. You know, for BNB floating around doing nothing for so long this tournament itself gave him a little leverage. Before he just felt like fodder for Duggan but you could probably squeeze something more out of him after his KOTR showing.
Woah! Hell of a rating for Dibiase and Luger! Honestly upset Windham got involved as it felt like Luger had excuse enough in losing without Heenan. All things considered though, Windham wants Dibiase and Luger had a much easier match earlier than Dibiase. Windham just making sure we ALL get what we want.
I feel like I've known the KOTR finals were going to be this for like 2 years. And that's great because sometimes the obvious direction is the best direction. What a match too! You've got a lot of fuel on this fire and these two could work together for as long as you need them too. But this also feels like both of them take the next step up as soon as you need them to. DiBiase quite possibly the best wrestler in the Universe at the moment.
Hogan matches are pretty easy to write up, eh? If not for "Hogan must pose" this should have been on right before intermission. In a real world of Hogan vs. Monsters I think you're on a path to really mix things up for the Hulkster in this Universe by testing him against some of wrestlings best WORKERS. We've got a lot to be excited for with this run of Hulkamania!

7/19/86 - GCW Superstars (TAPED: 6/24/86) LOCATION: Mid-Hudson Civic Center - Poughkeepsie, NY
Gorilla Monsoon and Mark Niemiller welcomed everyone to the hottest weekly television show in the world, GCW Superstars! They briefly talked about King of the Ring, where Niemiller was practically beaming to announce that Barry Windham was the winner, mentioning how Windham is finally successful after looking out for himself. They also mentioned that Hulk Hogan retained his World Title, and Monsoon teased that they would be showing some footage later that shows that all might not be well in the Heenan Family. Niemiller immediately blew it off, saying it was merely a minor setback. They finished up by running down today's show, highlighted by a grudge match between Dos Caras and Hector Guerrero! Now off to the ring and Howard Finkel.
MATCH #1 Junkyard Dog vs. Jack Kruger
Easy win for JYD as you would expect. The highlight was an insert promo during where he and Koko B. Ware challenged Adrian Adonis and Honky Tonk Man to a tag team match for next Saturday in Philadelphia to see if they can all settle their issues.
Junkyard Dog pinned Jack Kruger with the Thump Powerslam in 0:01:34. Rating: -1/2*
IS THERE DISSENTION IN THE RANKS OF THE HEENAN FAMILY?
As Monsoon had mentioned in the opening, a video was shown that was apparently filmed moments after the main event of the King of the Ring after Hulk Hogan retained the World Title against King Kong Bundy in a steel cage encounter. During the video where Bobby Heenan seems unaware that the camera is even there, the Brain is brow-beating Bundy, saying that this was their last chance to get the World Title back and he blew it. Bundy was doing his best to keep his cool but when Heenan got in his face, Bundy snapped back and told Heenan to back off. Heenan looked like he saw a ghost and apologized. Big John Studd then entered and was upset himself, yelling about how he would have won the King of the Ring if Heenan wasn't so preoccupied with The Barbarian. Heenan was stumbling on his words to explain himself to both of these behemoths when he caught sight of the camera. Heenan lost his mind and was rushing at the cameraman, screaming for him to turn the camera off and something about lawyers and litigation. The video ends with Heenan shoving the camera out and slamming the door shut. Bobby Heenan was out next for our next contest as Lex Luger would be in action, but Heenan rushed the announce position first, screaming at Monsoon for defamation and saying he had no right showing that video as it was filmed without his permission. Monsoon deflected and asked Heenan about the Heenan Family falling apart. The Brain was taken aback and said there was no problems with the Heenan Family (and called Monsoon a big monkey in there too). Heenan did say there would be some big changes coming soon though, and it was only a matter of time before Bobby Heenan was back on top.
MATCH #2 "The Total Package" Lex Luger (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan) vs. Gary Semones
Despite Heenan clearly being out of it and worried about outside matters, The Total Package didn't have much trouble taking care of his opponent this week. The announcers did reveal that Luger would be taking on the newly returned Kerry Von Erich in 2 weeks' time here on Superstars.
Lex Luger pinned Gary Semones after a powerslam in 0:04:44. Rating: * 3/4
MATCH #3 Bad News Brown vs. Don Driggers
After Bad News Brown more or less legally assaulted Don Driggers, we got a surprise appearance at ringside by Television champion "HACKSAW" JIM DUGGAN. Duggan referenced Brown's recent comments about Bad News not getting the same opportunities as him because he's black. Well Duggan was here to give him a huge opportunity - a shot at the Television Title. Brown accepted, and Hacksaw let him know there would be no excuses when he beats him for the title. We've learned this match has been signed for next week on Superstars.
Bad News Brown pinned Don Driggers with the Ghetto Blaster in 0:02:06. Rating: -*
LIVE EVENT REPORT W/ GENE OKERLUND
"Mean" Gene Okerlund was a-buzzing for this week's Live Event Report, as he always is. He briefly ran down the major events of King of the Ring, including showing a small clip of the end of the finals which saw Barry Windham defeat Ted DiBiase to become the 1986 King of the Ring. Okerlund speculated that Windham may now be in line for an Intercontinental Title shot. Okerlund ran down next Saturday's card, highlighted by a battle royal to determine who faces Hulk Hogan for the World Title at The Big Event. Okerlund also mentioned that with Bob Backlund suffering an injury in the King of the Ring tournament, he will not be competing against Tully Blanchard as originally advertised, but instead will be replaced by Television champion Jim Duggan. Okerlund concluded by saying he was hoping they'd have some match announcements for the Big Event next week on Superstars.
MATCH #4 The Rock 'N Roll Express (World Tag Team champions) vs. Rick Hunter/Serge Jodoin
Nothing more than a showcase for our World Tag Team champions, who will surely be watching the round robin series of matches in Philadelphia very closely next Saturday night.
The Rock 'N Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson) defeated Rick Hunter and Serge Jodoin when R. Morton pinned Hunter after the Double Dropkick in 0:03:55. Rating: 1/2*
MATCH #5 Dos Caras vs. Hector Guerrero
Our main event has been brewing for awhile as there is a lot of well documented history between Dos Caras and Hector Guerrero. Hector blames Caras for getting his brother Chavo injured and has been trying to get even for that ever since he returned. Caras came out hot as he is tired of Hector both blaming and attacking him, so this was his shot to put an end to this as well. Caras actually attacked Hector before the match, and from there it was a pure fight. You'd think we'd get a great lucha battle, but not today. We got more of a fight than anything, and it would come to an end when Hector Guerrero deliberately went low on Caras as it looked like Caras was about to win.
Dos Caras defeated Hector Guerrero by disqualification in 0:08:45. Rating: ** 1/4
After the aftermath of that and a quick commercial break, Monsoon announced that Dos Caras and Hector Guerrero will meet one more time next Saturday night at the Spectrum in Philadelphia to settle their feud. They closed out the live arena part of the show by saying that next week, the Television Title will be on the line with "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan defending against Bad News Brown! The Barbarian will be here, as will Andre the Giant, and so much more!
TED DIBIASE WANTS BARRY WINDHAM IN THE RING ONE MORE TIME
Before we went off the air, we got an interview in the locker room with Intercontinental champion Ted DiBiase. DiBiase was fuming to himself as Lord Alfred Hayes asked him about coming up short in the King of the Ring. DiBiase begrudgingly gave Barry Windham credit, but mentioned the shortcuts Windham took by attacking him before the match. DiBiase ran down their history and said he was going to put an end to it once and for all. He said he spoke to President Jack Tunney and asked for, no BEGGED for one more match with Barry Windham, even willing to put the IC Title on the line to make it happen. The match will take place in Philadelphia next Saturday night, and DiBiase said he is going to put an end to all of this once and for all.

Dissension in the Heenan Family? I’m intrigued!
A JYD & Koko team is fun. It may not have any legs beyond Philly but it should be entertaining while it lasts.
Oh boy! That’s HUGE dissention if Studd & Bundy are BOTH on the outs with Heenan. I’m very intrigued with where this is going.
But Heenan at least has a young Luger. And depending on how you handle Kerry will determine whether i have any respect for your fantasy booking abilities or not.
Quickest way to handle a bully is to call him out on his shit. Duggan and Bad News is gonna be ugly but I mean it in the best way!
Ricky & Robert on a roll!
Nothing like lucha libre in New York to close a show! Or not. Good decision just having a wild mexican brawl. I had plans for Hector, which are wildy different than how you’re using him, but I digging what you’re doing.
Oooh, Andre on TV next week?!
Dibiase and Windham on track to have a feud of the year!
This Spectrum card looking like slugfest city and I can’t wait!

7/26/86 - GCW Superstars (TAPED: 7/15/86) LOCATION: Mid-Hudson Civic Center - Poughkeepsie, NY
MATCH #1 "The Birdman" Koko B. Ware (w/ Junkyard Dog) vs. "Adorable" Adrian Adonis (w/ Jimmy Hart & Honky Tonk Man)
Our opener for the day was a preview of a tag title match signed for tonight in Philadelphia with Koko B. Ware taking on "Adorable" Adrian Adonis. We also had a packed house at ringside with Junkyard Dog, Honky Tonk Man, and Jimmy Hart there. Koko was fired up early and didn't want to deal with any of Adonis' tomfoolery, not letting the Adorable One's antics get into his head. JYD did a bang up job of keeping Honky Tonk Man & Hart at bay, but eventually they would get involved. Jimmy Hart tried to jump on the apron to go for a dastardly deed, but JYD grabbed him and pulled him down. JYD was going to clock Hart, but Honky Tonk nailed him from behind and tossed him into the ringspot. In the meantime, Adonis had gotten ahold of the megaphone and absolutely blasted Koko with it for the DQ.
Koko B. Ware defeated Adrian Adonis by disqualification in 0:6:00. Rating: ** 3/4
If Koko & JYD are going to win tonight, they're going to need a quick recovery as they were left worse for wear as we went to break.
MATCH #2 Andre the Giant vs. Mario Mancini
Squash. Literally.
Andre the Giant pinned Mario Mancini with the Elbowdrop in 0:01:55. Rating: 1/2*
MATCH #3 The Barbarian vs. Jim Haley
The Barbarian was not being paid by the hour today, as he absolutely obliterated the hapless Jim Haley, pinning him in a mere 10 seconds.
The Barbarian pinned Jim Haley with the Diving Headbutt in 0:00:10. Rating: *
BOBBY HEENAN MAKES HIS FORMAL PITCH TO THE BARBARIAN
As had happened in previous weeks, Bobby "the Brain" Heenan had been watching, but this time, he was going to make his move. He had a contract with him, and he grabbed a mic to make a formal offer to The Barbarian. Heenan gave his pitch, saying that with his brains and Barbarian's brawn, they could rule the wrestling world. As the Brain laid out his plans, The Barbarian simply looked confused, clearly not understanding. Heenan handed Barbarian the contract and mimed signing it, trying to get the savage to do it. Instead, Barbarian smiled and then proceeded to eat the contract. Barbarian chased Heenan out of the ring, leaving the Brain to scramble up the aisle.
THE BRAIN VOWS REVENGE
Lord Alfred Hayes caught up with Bobby Heenan after the commercial to talk about what just happened. Heenan could barely gain his composure, stumbling over his words. Eventually he mustered that The Barbarian was going to pay because NO ONE disrespects him like that.
LIVE EVENT REPORT W/ GENE OKERLUND
"Mean" Gene was done about to lose his mind with excitement as he brought us the Live Event Report. He went over the card for tonight's Philadelphia with the added JUST ANNOUNCED match of The Barbarian taking on King Kong Bundy after what had taken place earlier in the program. Okerlund also promised next week he will have matches to announce for The Big Event, as well as an EXCLUSIVE interview with World champion Hulk Hogan!
MATCH #4 TELEVISION TITLE MATCH "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan (c) vs. Bad News Brown
Bad News Brown has been telling anyone who will listen how undeserving Jim Duggan is to be the TV champion, even going as far as claiming there is a racial bias that allows someone like Hacksaw to get a title shot but not him. Well, he had his shot today, and Duggan was looking to shut him up. Not that these two are known for their technical skill anyway, but this was an emotion fueled fight. Duggan doesn't like anyone telling him he is undeserving of his opportunities, and he was looking to shut Brown up once and for all. Unfortunately if you're a Hacksaw fan, it didn't exactly work out that way for him. Duggan got a little too intense and near the end of a brutal match, was pounding on Bad News with punches in the corner. Referee Joey Marella tried to pull Duggan away, thus turning his back to Brown. Brown reached into his tights and pulled out an object. As Hacksaw went back in for the kill, but walked right into a loaded punch from Brown. 1. 2. 3. We have a new Television champion.
Bad News Brown pinned Jim Duggan after hitting him with a foreign object in 0:11:38. Rating: 1/4* (Bad News Brown won the GCW Television Title.)
Brown grabbed the TV Title violently from the timekeeper and held it high over his head. Monsoon was yelling about how we witnessed highway robbery whereas Niemiller was happy to counter by saying Bad News was just doing whatever it took to take what was his. Monsoon was certain that Duggan wasn't going to take this miscarriage of justice.
Be sure to join us next week on Superstars! Former World champion King Kong Bundy will be in action, as will Junkyard Dog. GCW's favorite tourists, The Rougeau Brothers, will take on The Hart Foundation, and a big grudge match between Kerry Von Erich and Lex Luger!
!!! BREAKING NEWS !!!
The GCW Championship Committee acted quickly in regards to what went down during the Television Title match. They wouldn't go as far as to reverse the decision as the referee's decision is final in GCW, but a rematch was made in short order. On August 28 in Toronto at The Big Event, Bad News Brown will defend the TV Title against "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan.

7/26/86 - The Spectrum - Philadelphia, PA
MATCH #1 The Road Warriors (w/ Paul Ellering) vs. The Power Company (w/ Jimmy Hart)
There are 3 teams tonight who don't like each other locking horns in a small round-robin style event tonight, and our first match was The Road Warriors taking on The Power Company. The Power Company were late additions to this after the knee injury Nikita Koloff suffered. Dino Bravo & Hercules were wrestling one of the few teams in the world who can match them in power, and as a result we had a good old-fashioned bar fight to kick off this show. The fight would come to an end after some shenanigans though as not surprisingly, SGT. SLAUGHTER & STAN HANSEN became involved. Slaughter came out and pulled Hawk off the apron, getting in his face. Referee Joey Marella jumped out to make sure nothing could happen, but in doing so, he missed Hansen tossing his bullrope into Hercules. Hercules clocked Animal with the cowbell, disposed of the evidence, and stole a victory in the opener.
The Power Company (Dino Bravo and Hercules) defeated The Road Warriors (Hawk and Animal) when Hercules pinned Animal after hitting him with a foreign object in 0:10:25. Rating: * 1/2 [Sgt. Slaughter interfered against Hawk.]
After the match, Bravo & Hercules tried to celebrate in the ring with the Unholy Alliance, and were greeted with a pair of lariats. They must have somehow forgotten they will be wrestling Slaughter & Hansen later.
MATCH #2 Junkyard Dog/"The Birdman" Koko B. Ware vs. "Adorable" Adrian Adonis/Honky Tonk Man (w/ Jimmy Hart)
These four individuals have been at each other's throats since Honky Tonk Man debuted, tried to befriend JYD, and didn't wait too long to show his true colors as a scumbag. JYD's real friend, Koko B. Ware, has come to his side to help him, while HTM has aligned himself with Jimmy Hart and the First Family. But even though the First Family may be manipulative jerks, they are incredibly dangerous in the ring, mostly because they are willing to do anything to win. However, Koko did a great job of watching JYD's back tonight, allowing JYD to hit the Thump Powerslam on HTM to put this feud to bed.
Junkyard Dog and Koko B. Ware defeated The First Family (Adrian Adonis and Honky Tonk Man) when JYD pinned Honky Tonk Man with the Thump Powerslam in 0:07:11. Rating: ** 1/2
MATCH #3 The Road Warriors (w/ Paul Ellering) vs. Sgt. Slaughter/Stan "The Lariat" Hansen
The second match in the round robin was obviously the one filled with the most vitriol as The Road Warriors took on the Unholy Alliance, who cost them the opening contest. The person with the worst job in the world had to have been referee Tommy Young, who was tasked with trying to maintain order while 4 of the scariest men in the world tried to rip each other limb from limb. Young did the best he could, but… c'mon. The match spilled to the floor as all 4 men destroyed each other, Young made a fast count to try to end the chaos, and we had ourselves a double countout.
The Road Warriors (Hawk and Animal) and Sgt. Slaughter and Stan Hansen battled to a double countout in 0:05:25. Rating: ** 3/4
With that, the Road Warriors are 0-1-1 in the round robin, while Slaughter/Hansen are 0-0-1 and the Power Company are 1-0-0. So what that means, the winner of the Unholy Alliance vs. The Power Company will win this round robin. That is, if Slaughter & Hansen can stop fighting with Hawk & Animal by then.
MATCH #4 Dos Caras vs. Hector Guerrero
Dos Caras had one more change to extract some revenge on Hector Guerrero for turning his back on him, but unfortunately if you're a Caras fan, this wasn't going to be your night to see it. It didn't help Caras' case that as he was being introduced, Guerrero attacked him from behind by clipping his knee. The referee gave Caras the option to not compete, but Caras is a proud man and wanted to still fight. He fought valiantly and with a lot of heart, but his knee was clearly hurt. He would fall victim to a figure-four leglock from Guerrero.
Hector Guerrero made Dos Caras submit to a figure-four leglock in 0:06:05. Rating: * 3/4
MATCH #5 20-MAN BATTLE ROYAL - WINNER RECEIVES WORLD TITLE SHOT AT THE BIG EVENT
A battle royal victory is a huge notch on one's belt under normal conditions, but this battle royal had even more behind it. Twenty competitors had a chance to earn themselves a World Title shot at The Big Event on August 28 in front of 70,000+ fans against the biggest star in the world, champion Hulk Hogan. The first man to hit the showers though was Koko B. Ware, as though he came out a house of fire, he took the time to flap his wings when he had the advantage on Jimmy Garvin, letting Honky Tonk Man kick him in the gut and send him over the top. Not long after, the now former Television champion Jim Duggan changed the complexion of this match considerably when he eliminated the giant Big John Studd, knocking a clear favorite out of the contest.
The bad luck Duggan had this morning on Superstars bled into this battle royal. Duggan looked primed to make a long run in this battle royal, but the man who stole the TV Title from him also stole his chance at a World Title match. Bad News Brown blindsided him with a lariat that sent him over the top. Bad News took the time to rub it in Duggan's face, and Hacksaw finally had enough. He pulled Brown to the floor under the bottom rope and knocked his block off with the Three Point Stance clothesline to a huge pop. Not a title shot, but a moral victory for Duggan.
The next elimination of note was Honky Tonk Man getting the last laugh of Junkyard Dog. JYD thought he had eliminated HTM when he threw him over the top, but that pesky Jimmy Hart helped make sure HTM didn't hit the floor. JYD made a huge mistake by not double checking that his feet hit the floor. HTM rolled back in and dumped JYD over the top, cackling like a mad man the whole time. In the next few minutes, the ring thinned out a bit as Jacques Rougeau was ousted by Ivan Koloff, his brother Raymond not long after by Jim Neidhart, and Koloff making his second elimination by tossing out Hector Guerrero. This was looking like it could have been a great run by the GCW legend and former World champion Koloff, but Kerry Von Erich caught him square with a kneelift and sent him to the showers.
We were almost halfway through the competitors, and at this point, the numbers advantage was becoming very obvious. Both members of the Hart Foundation remained, but that didn't last long because they were soon divided and conquered by the 4 members of the Heenan Family that still remained. Ricky Steamboat, Lex Luger, Tully Blanchard, & Arn Anderson started trying to single people out to eliminate them, the first being Bret Hart. On the other side of the ring, Bad News Brown took out Jimmy Garvin. The Heenan Family were running roughshot and looked like they were going to waltz into being the final four as they next targeted Von Erich, but Von Erich survived the assault and managed to get Blanchard out, putting a huge wrinkle in Bobby Heenan's plan!
There was another duo still in the match, but they had themselves a slight miscalculation. HTM & Adrian Adonis were trying to double team Von Erich as they saw him as a major threat. Adonis held Von Erich open for HTM, but the Modern Day Warrior got himself free and Honky Tonk's clothesline connected with his partner instead, sending the Adorable One toppling to the floor! Without having his backup anymore, HTM tried to make friends with the Heenan Family, spending some time trying to butter them up to join forces. It didn't work, as Arn Anderson would throw HTM out.
We were now down to our final 6: Anderson, Luger, & Steamboat of the Heenan Family, Jim Neidhart, Bad News Brown, & Kerry Von Erich. On paper, this obviously didn't not favor Von Erich in the least, as he was in the ring with a swarm of rulebreakers. He got a small bit of relief as the Heenan Family determined the biggest threat was Neidhart, as the Anvil was clearly the biggest and strongest man in the match. Neidhart tried to fight all 3 and did a decent job of it, but eventually the numbers got the better of him and he was unceremoniously dumped to the floor by Steamboat. At this point, the Heenan Family turned to Von Erich. Bad News Brown held back while Anderson, Luger, & Steamboat went after Von Erich like a pack of dogs. Von Erich was in deep trouble, but something snapped in him as Luger started to slap him in the back of the head with such disrespect. Von Erich fired up and seemed impervious to pain as he peppered the Heenan Family with wild Discus punches. Von Erich was so fired up, he even ran over and blasted an unsuspecting Bad News with a Discus punch, sending him flying to the floor! If that wasn't enough, Luger charged him and Von Erich ducked, elevated the Total Package with a backdrop and eliminating him too!
Down to the final 3 to see who would face Hulk Hogan in Toronto, and the Brain was panicking on the outside. Von Erich was on fire and it was looking like nothing was going to stop him, so Heenan decided to try to take matters into his own hands. Heenan jumped up on the apron and took a wild swing at Von Erich, but Von Erich blocked it and grabbed Heenan by the collar. The crowd was in a frenzy wanting Von Erich to deck the Brain. Well they got their wish, but it was at a cost because the distraction worked. Steamboat snuck in from behind and tossed Von Erich out. If that wasn't shocking enough, the Enforcer then snuck up behind the Dragon and tossed HIM out! Arn Anderson wins!
[WINNER RECEIVES WORLD TITLE MATCH AT THE BIG EVENT]: 20-Man Battle Royal: Arn Anderson won a 20-man Battle Royal: x Honky Tonk Man threw out K. B. Steamboat was in absolute shock, looking on in disbelief on the floor as Heenan rolled back in holding his jaw to celebrate. Steamboat got back in himself and questioned Anderson over what just happened. It looked like this wasn't the original plan and tempers were definitely flaring. Heenan and the rest of the Family were able to calm the Dragon down, but there may be more to this story going forward. Don't let it be forgotten though that "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson will now get the biggest opportunity of his career as he challenges Hulk Hogan for the World Title at The Big Event!
MATCH #6 The Barbarian vs. King Kong Bundy (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan)
Bobby Heenan was obviously not completely focused on this match as there was still some turmoil going in the locker room with the rest of his charges. Somebody who noticed that was King Kong Bundy, who more than once during this match yelled at Heenan to pay attention. Bundy's credentials speak for themselves, but the fact that the former World champion was concerned with his manager helping is a testament to how scary The Barbarian has been in his early GCW career. Barbarian has been unstoppable, and made it very clearly on a recent Superstars that he wanted nothing to do with Bobby Heenan. This was a battle through and through, but Heenan's brain (pun intended) was clearly elsewhere. Bundy had bodyslammed Barbarian and turned to yell at the Brain one more time to help him out, not noticing that Barbarian had gotten to his feet. Bundy turned around into a mafia kick that did something that has rarely happened to him - knocked him flat down. The Diving Headbutt was next, and The Barbarian picked up a HUGE win.
The Barbarian pinned King Kong Bundy with the Diving Headbutt in 0:11:07. Rating: 1/4* [Bobby Heenan interfered against The Barbarian.]
MATCH #7 The Power Company (w/ Jimmy Hart) vs. Sgt. Slaughter/Stan "the Lariat" Hansen
We had our final round robin tag match now, and what a match it was! The Power Company & The Unholy Alliance locked up to see who would win this mini tournament. This was a surprisingly good wrestling match. These teams are known more for brawling, but early on, I think everyone involved knew this could go awhile and didn't want to make any mistakes. But once the gloves came off, they came OFF. As the fight raged on, HAWK & ANIMAL started their way to the ring, jawing and wanting to get at Slaughter & Hansen. This was all the opening that The Power Company needed as Hercules took this time to plant Hansen with a powerslam to steal the win!
The Power Company (Dino Bravo and Hercules) defeated Sgt. Slaughter and Stan Hansen when Hercules pinned Hansen after a powerslam in 0:14:00. Rating: ****
Hansen wasn't down long though as he & Slaughter rolled out of the ring and went right after the Road Warriors, causing a wave of security and officials to pour out from the back to break it up. It's clear that something desperate is going to have to be done before somebody gets seriously hurt.
MATCH #8 "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan vs. Tully Blanchard (w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan)
This has not been a good day for Jim Duggan. Hacksaw lost the Television Title earlier today on Superstars to Bad News Brown. He was eliminated early on in the #1 contender's battle royal. Could he turn his luck around against Tully Blanchard here? No, no he could not, and he has Bad News to thank for that. Bad News wasn't content merely taking Duggan's title and eliminating him in the battle royal - he wanted to embarrass him here too. Nobody even knew Bad News was out there until it was too late. Apparently he just stayed under the ring after being eliminated earlier from the battle royal, because he rolled out when Duggan was on the floor and dropped him with the Ghetto Blaster! Brown rolled Hacksaw's lifeless body back in the ring where Blanchard was more than happy to take the assist, hitting the Slingshot Suplex for the 1-2-3.
Tully Blanchard pinned Jim Duggan with the Slingshot Suplex in 0:03:19. Rating: *** [Bad News Brown interfered against Jim Duggan.]
Brown might be enjoying all the laughs now, but he better remember that Duggan gets his rematch at The Big Event.
MATCH #9 INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE MATCH Ted DiBiase (c) vs. Barry Windham
The history between these two is well documented. This was Barry Windham's big chance in his mind to finally step out Ted DiBiase's shadow and show he could do it on his own. For DiBiase, this match was how he was going to end these issues with Windham once and for all. Despite all of the bad blood, it was a bit surprising to see how the match started. Very technical with a lot of mat-based wrestling and counters. It was as if both men were trying to prove a point. As the match passed its infancy and got into the meat of it, that went out the window. Sure, there was some great wrestling, but there is a lot of aggression between these two and they laid it all out. It was hard to ever say who had the advantage as the momentum changed hands several times, but it took a big swing when referee Dick Kroll was caught by an errant backhand from Windham, taking him out of the action.
Windham saw that Kroll was down, and his frustration to put DiBiase away had been boiling over at this point. Windham rolled out to grab a chair. He brought it in and had DiBiase in his sights. Windham took a wild swing but DiBiase ducked and locked on the Cobra Clutch! Windham was fading fast, which is when things took a turn. Unexpectedly, ARN ANDERSON & TULLY BLANCHARD came down to ringside and began barking at DiBiase. What were they doing here? DiBiase released the hold and turned to them, yelling for them to get out of there. What DiBiase didn't notice was that a masked man had jumped the rail and was now in the ring holding the chair Windham had dropped! When DiBiase turned around, this masked man absolutely CRACKED DiBiase over the head with it. DiBiase was completely busted open now as Windham had recovered. The masked man left the ring leaving Windham to hit the Superplex for the pinfall. New Intercontinental champion!
Barry Windham pinned Ted DiBiase with the Superplex in 0:19:13. Rating: **** 1/4 (Barry Windham won the GCW Intercontinental Title.) [Mystery Man interfered against Ted DiBiase.]
The fans in Philadelphia couldn't believe what was happening as Windham was handed the IC Title as Anderson & Blanchard ran in and celebrated with him. Bobby Heenan was now in the ring too and started laughing, hugging Windham! Windham is a part of the Heenan Family? Disgusting. But we still didn't know who the masked man was. The masked man got back in the ring and… started strutting? He ripped off his mask to reveal… oh no… RIC FLAIR! Ric Flair is back in Global Championship Wrestling! The show came to a close with Flair, Anderson, Blanchard, Heenan, and the new IC champion celebrating as they were pelted with debris from the crowd.
Card rating: ***
