MATCH #1 The Road Warriors/George Steele (w/ Paul Ellering) vs. The Midnight Express/Big Bubba Rogers (w/ Jim Cornette)
We weren't going to waste any time for our sold out show in Atlanta. All six men could hardly wait to tear into one another, but the Road Warriors and George Steele were able to get the upper hand quickly in the fray. Big Bubba, Bobby Eaton, and Dennis Condrey quickly bailed from the ring, but that left Jim Cornette all alone. Cornette tried his best to get away, but Steele was able to grab him and took a huge BITE of Cornette's backside. Cornette was hollering in pain until Steele released him. The Prince of Polyester nearly killed himself diving outside the ring and into Big Bubba's arms. The match settled into a typical six-man tag after that, but Cornette kept his eye on Steele. Any time Steele made a motion that he might try and go after him, Cornette sprinted to the other side of the ring. Hawk and Animal actually had a good back and forth match with Condrey and Eaton going as neither team was able to get a decisive advantage. When Steele and Rogers entered the ring, the match slowed down some with several painful holds. During one of these exchanges Steele was about to earn the victory for his team when he locked Rogers in the Flying Hammerlock. This sent the Midnight Express and the Road Warriors into the ring and a huge brawl erupted. During the chaos, Cornette tossed Rogers the tennis racket. Rogers plastered Steele between the eyes with it while referee Randy Anderson was trying to separate Hawk and Dennis Condrey. Eaton climbed to the top and planted the fallen Steele with a kneedrop while Anderson pushed the other competitors to the outside. He turned around to see Eaton covering Steele. Three seconds later and the match was over.
The Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton and Dennis Condrey) and Big Bubba Rogers defeated The Road Warriors (Hawk and Animal) and George Steele when Eaton pinned G. Steele after a top-rope kneedrop in 0:10:08. Rating: **
Hawk and Animal quickly reentered the ring and drilled Eaton with a double clothesline. The Midnight Express weren't going to stick around to fight it out, however. Condrey grabbed Eaton and pulled him to the outside as Rogers dropped to the floor and escorted Cornette from ringside. Jim Cornette and the Midnight Express keep finding ways to screw the Road Warriors. Paul Ellering has to be frustrated.
MATCH #2 “The Cruncher” Larry Zbyszko vs. “The World's Strongest Man” Ted Arcidi (w/ “Superstar” Billy Graham)
What was originally an attempt by Larry Zbyszko to defend the honor of his mentor, Bruno Sammartino, has led to the Cruncher embroiled in a heated feud with three people. Paul Orndorff, Billy Graham, and now, newcomer Ted Arcidi. Zbyszko should be challenging for the World Title tonight, but thanks to Arcidi's debut in Little Rock costing him a match with Orndorff, he was going on second to square off against Graham's new charge. Zbyszko was in a foul mood as always as he started the match. The test for him would be to see how he could handle someone with the strength of Arcidi. It wasn't looking good in the beginning as Arcidi kept shoving Zbyszko to the mat whenever they locked up. It didn't take Zbyszko long to realize he was going to have to try another strategy, and that was to work over his tree-trunk legs. He knew it was going to be a slow process, and he took a great deal of punishment in the meantime. Every chance he got he threw a kick at the calf or thigh to try and soften it up, but it didn't appear to be working. In fact, it didn't even lead to the deciding pinfall. It was Arcidi's own ego that did that. He had propped Zbyszko up in the corner after wailing away at him for several minutes. He flexed his muscles and played up to the crowd, and received a boisterous reaction of jeers for his troubles. Billy Graham urged Arcidi to refocus on Zbyszko. When he finally charged in, Zbyszko moved out of the way! Stunned after hitting the buckles, Arcidi staggered back into a German Suplex by Zbyszko. Arcidi didn't even realize his shoulders were on the mat before they were counted down for the three.
Larry Zbyszko pinned Ted Arcidi after a German Suplex in 0:11:42. Rating: **
Any chance of Zbyszko celebrating his victory was squashed when Graham drilled him with a clothesline after the bell. Graham put the boots to the Cruncher as Arcidi shook his head to clear the cobwebs. Once he figured out what had happened, he bellowed in anger. He grabbed Zbyszko off the mat and threw him over his head in a Gorilla Press. The Clean and Jerk followed which knocked the Cruncher silly. He was going to go for a second when several officials stormed the ring. Arcidi, never to be deterred, threw a few to the mat which will definitely earn him a hefty fine. He brought Zbyszko back up over his head and delivered another Clean and Jerk. This time more officials came to the ring and they were finally able to convince Graham to get a hold of his man. Graham raised Arcidi's to declare him the REAL winner of the bout. The fans did not appreciate it at all.
MATCH #3 No Disqualification Match “Maniac” Matt Borne vs. Jerry “The King” Lawler
We knew we were going to see a different side of Jerry Lawler due to his recent loss to Matt Borne in the no-dq match back in Little Rock. He came to the ring sans his crown and robe, something we don't see very often, and didn't waste any time in tackling Matt Borne before the bell rang. And true to his word, we saw the meaner side of Lawler come out in this match. Lawler is no stranger to brawls like this, but he hasn't been involved in very many since receiving the cheers from the crowd after he formed a friendship with David Von Erich. He took little time in tossing Borne to the outside and bouncing his head off the guardrail a few times. Lawler even bodyslammed Borne right there on the ring floor. It wasn't like Borne was sitting there and simply taking it though. He has quickly become one of the top wrestlers in the sport despite his apparent personality disorder. Borne grabbed several items from underneath the ring, including a metal bucket, that he slammed into Lawler's head over and over again. Lawler came away from it with a slight gash over his eye, but nothing too serious. The match went like this for the duration with neither man seemingly getting the advantage, but somehow Borne sneaked in a knee to the groin when they came back into the ring. Borne pointed to his temple, once again trying to show that he had outsmarted Lawler. Lawler was in immense pain, but as Borne tried to pull him up off the mat, a FIREBALL engulfed Borne's face! Borne screamed in pain as he fell to the mat. Borne rolled around the canvas trying to cover his face while Lawler looked on with an almost stunned expression on his face. Referee Dave Hebner checked on Borne, and apparently decided that would be enough as he called for the bell. Several doctors and officials came to the ring, and one threw a wet towel on Borne's face. Lawler didn't know how to react. He looked at his hands as if he couldn't believe what he had done. He finally left the ring and went to the back as the medical crew continued to check on “Maniac” Matt Borne.
No-DQ-Match: Jerry Lawler fought Matt Borne to a no-contest in 0:12:27. Rating: *** ¼
MATCH #4 Harley Race vs. “The Russian Nightmare” Nikita Koloff (w/ “Luscious” Johnny V/The Dream Team)
We knew “Luscious” Johnny V would accompany Nikita Koloff to the ring, but there was a surprise in store for Harley Race. The World Tag Team Champions, the Dream Team, also came to ringside to supposedly lend “moral support” to their Russian ally. It didn't take a genius to see the fix was in. Harley Race won't back down from anyone, even if the numbers are not in his favor, but he was already going to have his hands full with Nikita. He didn't need Brutus Beefcake and Hercules Hernandez patrolling ringside. Race knew a victory here would possibly get him his shot at his former protegee, Hercules, a match he has been waiting on for several months. His game plan was simple as he bid his time and waited for Nikita to make a mistake. The only problem with that is Koloff doesn't make many mistakes, and you are going to take a vicious beating while waiting. Still, Race finally caught Nikita attempting an unusual attempt from the top rope. Race was able to slam him off, blast him with a clothesline, and motion that he was going for the Piledriver. Hercules took this as the opportune time to hop up on the ring apron. Race couldn't pass up the chance for a shot at his former partner, and drilled him between the eyes with a right hand. That split second was all it took for Nikita to regroup and nail Race with the Russian Sickle.
Nikita Koloff pinned Harley Race with the Russian Sickle in 0:09:35. Rating: ** 1/4
What we saw next was an unmerciful beat down of one of the most respected wrestlers in the business. Hercules, Beefcake, and Nikita took turns kicking the body of Race. Beefcake stood him up so Nikita could deliver another Russian Sickle. And to top it all off, Hercules locked Race in the excruciating Full Nelson. Race was already hurt, and this move actually led to him falling unconscious due to the pain. Johnny V applauded his men's effort before leading them away. Race would recover and make his way to the back. He was in a great deal of pain from his neck and his left arm. Not only did he lose an opportunity to possibly challenge Hercules, but he looked a beaten man as he went through the curtain.
ANNOUNCEMENT:
It was Gordon Solie that came to the ring to make the announcement that he eluded to earlier today on Worldwide. He told the crowd that the National Wrestling Federation had come to an agreement with WTBS to air a special television program on September 29th which will be titled Clash of the Champions: Survivor Series. Much like last year's show in Norfolk, there will be matches consisting of four man teams. When you are pinned, submit, counted out, or disqualified you will be eliminated from your team. This will continue until one team remains. Due to this, we might see a four-on-two or three-on-three or even a four-on-one.
This was not the only announcement Solie had to make. He also said that on November 28th NWF will have its first pay-per-view event! It is called Starrcade and the only way to be able to watch this special event will be to call your local cable company and tell them you don't want to miss out on this inaugural event! Titles will be defended, feuds will come to a head, and men like Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Ric Flair, and Butch Reed are sure to be on the card.
MATCH #5 United States Title Match “Hacksaw” Butch Reed (c) vs. Curt Hennig
There wasn't any deep seated hatred between champion and challenger tonight. Of course, if you asked Butch Reed, he'd say he hated anyone that wanted to try and take his title. He spent nearly a year trying to win the World Title but was turned back in every attempt. Somehow, though, he was able to find a way to win the US Title in the process, a title held by some greats that have wrestled in the company. Curt Hennig wanted to be next on that list. Another man that had a vested interest in this match was Randy Savage, the previous champion, who wanted nothing more than to regain his title. But more on him later. This match saw Hennig try and switch up the game plan he used to defeat Nikita Koloff. He wasn't going to be a punching bag this time. Hennig came out swiftly with several high impact moves and almost won himself the title after a jumping neck snap. Reed had to be wondering where this version of Curt Hennig came from. Reed did eventually catch Hennig in a mistake. Hennig flew off the top turnbuckle and right into a huge spinebuster from Reed. It knocked the wind completely out of Hennig, and put the match considerably in Reed's favor. The next few minutes were almost uncomfortable as Reed would deliver some sort of power move and then prod Hennig with his boot, asking him if he was going to get up. Reed kept goading Hennig on with insults as the match got further out of Hennig's grasp.
That's exactly when RANDY SAVAGE thought it was time to make his appearance. He had mentioned he wouldn't let this bout get out of hand, and that's exactly where it was headed. You have to hand it to Reed, though. He wasn't going to lose focus on his opponent. So, while Savage hopped up on the ring apron and argued with referee Dave Hebner about possibly stopping the match, Reed kept dishing out the punishment to Hennig. And then, just like that, Reed made a huge mistake as he stuck his head down for a backdrop way too early. Hennig locked him up and brought him over with a picture perfect Fisherman Suplex. The crowd counted, “1-2-3!” But referee Hebner was still with Savage. Savage saw what was happening as he jumped off the apron, but by the time Hebner turned around it was too late as Reed powered out of the pinfall attempt. Hennig was never able to regain that momentum and was put away shortly thereafter with the Flying Shoulderblock.
Butch Reed pinned Curt Hennig with the Flying Shoulderblock in 0:13:58. Rating: *** 1/2 (Butch Reed retained the NWF United States Title.)
Savage hopped back into the ring, but Reed wanted nothing to do with a fresh Macho Man. Savage showed some restraint as he did not chase after Hacksaw, but went to check on Hennig. Who knows how Hennig is going to react once he finds out what happened.
MATCH #6 “The Raging Bull” Manny Fernandez vs. Bruce Hart
While it isn't an impromptu match, it is as close as you get to one. This match was made a few hours ago on today's episode of Worldwide. Manny Fernandez abandoned the Hart Brothers last week in a six-man tag which led to Keith Hart squaring off against him earlier today. When that match didn't come to a decisive finish, this match was signed between Keith's older brother, Bruce, and the Raging Bull. Fernandez heard a few stray shouts of “chicken!” on his way to the ring and you could tell it was bothering him. He almost backhanded a fan that was overly loud, but thankfully he had the sense to refrain from committing assault. Fernandez wasn't as tired as you'd expect considering he had already competed earlier in the day. Despite appearing fresh, he wasn't able to control this match like you would expect. Keith is more of aerial wrestler while Bruce likes to keep it on the mat. Manny had trouble trying to wrestle his way out of all the holds Bruce was locking him in. His size would help him in the end, however, and looked like he was ready to finish Bruce off with the Flying Burrito. Bruce saw it coming and ducked causing Fernandez to hit nothing but air. Fernandez wobbled to his feet and directly into a sunset flip. A quick three seconds later and Bruce Hart had scored the upset.
Bruce Hart pinned Manny Fernandez after a sunset flip in 0:07:47. Rating: * ½
Manny Fernandez was furious as he got to his feet. He had the notion of trying to ambush Bruce after the match, but KEITH HART came to ringside and warned Bruce that Fernandez was approaching. Bruce joined Keith on the outside, high-fiving his brother, while Fernandez was forced to simmer inside the ring.
MATCH #7 The Four Horsemen (w/ Woman) vs. The Fabulous Freebirds (w/ Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy
The question of the night was if Kerry Von Erich would step in as the Freebirds' fourth partner to do battle with the Four Horsemen. While we never heard specifically from Kerry, rumor had it that Kerry still refused to have anything to do with the Freebirds. You'll remember that the Freebirds mocked Kerry often, used the late David Von Erich's name in doing so, and laid countless vicious beatings on him throughout the summer. Think of that before you feel too badly for the Freebirds. This left Michael Hayes, Buddy Roberts, and Iceman King Parsons alone to deal with the likes of Ric Flair, Greg Valentine, Ole Anderson, and Tommy Rich. Terry Gordy did accompany the Freebirds to ringside, but he was still on crutches and hardly able to put any weight on his injured leg. He provided as much support as he could, but you knew this was going to be a long road to haul for the Freebirds. Despite the disadvantage, they fought the best they could. Tommy Rich almost suffered a loss for the Horsemen when Michael Hayes was able to drop him with the DDT a few minutes in. The crowd exploded, but Ole Anderson was right there to break up the pinfall attempt. There were several other hopeful spots for the Freebirds, but they never really looked like they were close to pulling out the win. When Ole planted Roberts in the center of the ring with the Spinebuster Slam it was almost merciful.
Handicap-Match: The Four Horsemen (Ric Flair, Ole Anderson, Tommy Rich and Greg Valentine) defeated The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael Hayes, Buddy Roberts and Iceman King Parsons) when O. Anderson pinned Roberts with the Spinebuster Slam in 0:13:30. Rating: ** ¼
After the bell had rung, Hayes bent to a knee to check on Roberts. It would be a mistake as Flair nailed him from behind. Flair started to put the boots to the leader of the Freebirds. Ole and Valentine were able to control Parsons while Rich stood over the unconscious Roberts. Terry Gordy could only take so much as he stood at ringside. He hopped up the ringsteps, entered the ring, and forced the Horsemen to retreat. They only took a few steps back before realizing that Gordy was still injured. Each member of the Horsemen had a sick smile on their face as they started to surround Gordy. Gordy tossed one crutch to the outside, but held onto the other one and swung it wildly over his head to keep the Horsemen at bay. Valentine and Ole each took turns stepping into circle but jumped back as the crutch came dangerously close to connecting with their skull. Finally Rich reached out and grabbed the crutch and pulled it out of Gordy's grasp. Hopping on one foot, Gordy was going nowhere and motioned that he was ready for a fight.
The crowd nearly popped the roof off the arena as KERRY VON ERICH slid into the ring right before the Horsemen engulfed Gordy. Kerry plastered Rich with a right hand and dropkicked Valentine out of the ring. Gordy used the distraction to recollect his crutch and nailed Ole Anderson with it. Flair got out of there in a hurry before he could take any punishment while Kerry and Gordy stood tall in the ring. Parsons, Roberts, and Hayes slowly stood with their two saviors, and in an amazing sight, Kerry Von Erich shook hands with Michael Hayes! What a night!
MATCH #8 World Title Match Hulk Hogan (c) vs. “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff (w/ “Superstar” Billy Graham)
The main event of the evening would see the World Title on the line as Hulk Hogan defended against Paul Orndorff. Orndorff has done much in the NWF, but the World Title has always eluded him. He has a history with Hogan since before their recent skirmish in Little Rock, and has given Hogan some of the tougher fights he has ever had. This was, of course, back when Orndorff was receiving the cheers of the fans and Hogan was aligned with “Luscious” Johnny V. Things have changed drastically since 1983. The fans are solidly behind Hogan while Orndorff has shown his ego is possibly bigger than his skill. Orndorff almost cost Hogan the World Title in Little Rock when he Piledrived him before his match with Jesse Ventura. There would be no ambush this time, though, as both men met in the center of the ring.
The match itself was a slow affair as neither man wanted to make the fatal mistake. Hogan did his best to avoid the Piledriver since he knew that would be the end of the match. That didn't stop Orndorff from trying to work over Hogan's neck, but he was unable to hit the big move. So a lot of the match saw Orndorff locking him in moves that would weaken Hogan's massive neck while Hogan was throwing lefts and rights to break the holds. The match took a bad turn for Hogan when Hogan went to whip Orndorff into the turnbuckles. Orndorff reversed it and Hogan went colliding into the corner. The main problem with this was that Randy Anderson was standing there! Hogan collided with the referee, staggered back, and right into a kick to the midsection from Orndorff. The Piledriver followed and the crowd held its breath as Orndorff covered Hogan. There is little doubt that Orndorff would have won the match, but there was no referee to count the fall! Orndorff was furious as he tried to wake up Anderson. Billy Graham got into the act also as he entered the ring and started slapping Anderson to try and awaken him. Hogan had recovered by this point, however, and the crowd cheered mightily as Hogan grabbed Graham and Orndorff and knocked their heads together. Graham fell through the ropes and to the outside as Hogan bounced off the ropes and nailed Orndorff with his Big Leg Drop! Hogan covered Orndorff, but the referee was still down! It was now Hogan's turn to try and wake the ref, but he was prevented from doing so by Graham. Graham had reentered the ring with a chair and cracked it over Hogan's back! Hogan, instead of groaning in pain, jumped to his feet and pointed his finger directly at Graham. Hogan was shaking it back and forth as Graham begged and pleaded for mercy. Graham decided to escape as he hopped out of the ring, but Hogan caught up with him on the outside. Hogan slammed Graham on the hard concrete as the crowd yelled their approval.
Orndorff had recovered as he jumped off the ring apron with a double axhandle between Hogan's shoulderblades. Hogan fell forward and cracked his head into the guardrail. Referee Randy Anderson had finally come to enough to start a count on the outside. Orndorff tried to wrestle Hogan into the ring, but realized he wasn't going to get him into the ring and slid back into the ring before the count of ten. The bell rung and the crowd slowly realized what had happened.
Paul Orndorff defeated Hulk Hogan by countout in 0:14:07. Rating: * 3/4 (Hulk Hogan retained the NWF World Title.)
Paul Orndorff had his hand raised, but all he wanted was the title. He ripped it from Randy Anderson's hands and raised it over his head. The crowd booed unmercifully as Orndorff proclaimed himself the new World Champion. It took Gary Michael Cappetta to remind the crowd and Paul Orndorff that the title cannot change hands due to a countout. Orndorff was having none of it as he tried to strap the title around his waist. He didn't get far, however, as Hogan whipped him around and leveled him with several right hands. The last one sent Orndorff over the top rope and to the outside. Hogan threw the belt over his shoulder as his music came over the speakers. Orndorff grabbed Graham and headed to the back as he shouted insults at the Hulkster. Hogan didn't seem to care as he flexed his muscles in front of a cheering jam packed crowd.
Match Observations:
The first match has already been signed for Survivor Series. It will be a Survivor Series style match that will see the Fabulous Freebirds and Kerry Von Erich do battle with the Four Horsemen. It is bound to be one of the more heated affairs on the show, and one worthy of being the first announced for the show. Not only that, but right after the show the Championship Committee spoke with both Hulk Hogan and Paul Orndorff. They will each captain a team and do battle with one another at the Clash of the Champions: Survivor Series. No word yet on their partners will be, but there is little doubt that Orndorff and Hogan want the chance to get their hands on one another once again.

Nice show. A little disappointed in the finish of the main event, but it does help keep the feud going. Perhaps a Starrcade rematch. Although I'm not sure yet if Orndorff will be the one to take the belt from Hogan or not.
Good to see Von Erich finally come to the aid and teamup with the Freebirds. Should be one heck of a Survivor Series match.
I imagine Cornette will try to recruit one more client for a Survivor Series match against the Road Warriors and Steele. Question is who will each side get to be their fourth.
I don't think Hennig will be happy when he finds out Savage kept the ref from counting the pin on Reed. Interesting to see what comes of that.
Where the heck did that fireball come from?

Though it's a bit of a silly match, really, I think this Midnights/Road Warriors feud is going to lead to the Universe's first scaffold match. If anything, I need you to recreate Cornette's hilarious and painful drop from the scaffold where he tore his knee to shit. I'm interested to see how you keep Steele interesting. He's primarily a comedy character at this point, so it's a matter of getting him into these angles where he can be silly and weird.
That's how you have a guy lose a match and still get over. I don't think we have any real illusions of Arcidi turning into a long term star, but this has been surprisingly fun. Zbyszko is going to need to figure out something to counter these numbers.
I'm not sure if this is the path you're taking, but it looks like you may have planted the seeds for a double turn with Lawler & Borne. At the very least, a Lawler heel turn by playing off how he went "too far" in trying to get revenge. Even if that's not it, there's still a lot of ways you can go with this. Liked this one a lot.
I was worried you were going to have Race pin Nikita. I like what you did here though. I can see Race taking some time off and coming back as a surprise return to really get his chance to get at Hercules.
So there's the first Clash of the Champions and Starrcade. Glad to see Survivor Series make a return too. I don't imagine you letting the gimmick fall into obscurity like WWE has. Survivor Series matches are great for elevating guys too. Should be fun events. Not Slam Masters or Grand 16 good, but good none the less.
Well that didn't work out as planned. I think we are going to get a Savage turn. I think he has some more mileage as a high-midcard heel before he makes the big face turn. This whole program elevates Hennig too. He held his own against Reed, and really, pinned him without getting the actual win. Sucks no triangle matches yet. This would be PERFECT for one.
Not the most dazzling of debuts for Fernandez in this run, but this is a fun little angle. Not every wrestler can debut and be in huge programs. And honestly, I'm not big on the Raging Bull (as shown by how much his GCW run sucked the ass) and am kind of rooting for the Harts to get the big push. Speaking of, I wonder which wrestling family will ultimately be most impressive. Right now it would have to be the Grahams (even if they're not real family outside of Eddie and Mike) with two World Title reigns a piece for Luke & Billy. Funks have to be considered too.
Small typo in the post-match. Think you meant Gordy forced the Horsemen to retreat, not Freebirds. I liked the way you ended up doing this. Didn't think you would just do a handicap match and THEN have Von Erich save. The best part of this is that when the Freebirds inevitably turn on Kerry either during or after this, the heat will be molten.
A typical Hogan main event. Not a bad thing. You told the story well, Hogan keeps the title, and Orndorff can claim he is "the real World champion" to set up some rematches. All in all, good stuff.
And yes, they will captain Survivor Series teams, so a lot more to go here. I'm in.

You've done a good job in knocking the Road Warriors off their perch. For awhile they were so dominate they seemed inhuman but the Midnight's have consitantly showed that the Road Warriors ARE human and can be beaten. I also like how you're handling Steele. He's perfect for antagonizing Cornette.
Larry Z vs. Arcidid for 11+ minutes could have been excrutiating but it turned out pretty good, most likely due to the heat they have. I liked how Arcidi & Graham did some damage after the match. Arcidi could lose every match he ever has but as long as he keeps beating people up it won't matter.
I had an inkling of suspicion that Lawler would break out the fireball. And apparently that was more suspicion than Lawler himself had. Interested to see what comes out of this.
Race needs to analyze his current situation. He's consistently bested by Johnny V's men and he's so obsessed with getting revenge on Hercules that he's not preparing for his other matches. This won't be the last we see of Race but the next time we do see him he may have a different mindset.
Great story around the U.S. title right now. The way I see it Hennig has every right to be angry with Savage and his anger might push him over the edge.
Good win for both Harts. They would have looked silly losing back-to-back to Fernandez after he walked out on them. I think he'll get his heat back soon though.
I loved what you did with Gordy at the end of the match. Nothing screams babyface more than a guy taking on 4 merciless heels while on crutches. Add to it Kerry's change of heart and the Freebirds already feel fresh again.
Orndorff is a serious threat to Hogan and he proved it. He could have become the new World champion with that Piledriver but as always luck was on Hogan's side. I think this feud goes all the way to Starrcade for sure, maybe further.
We have Super Cade and Starrcade. Why not Starrmania?

Good show. We have Super Cade and Starrcade. Why not Starrmania? Or Starmania. Unless it is pirate-themed then it could be Starrrrrrmania.

Atlanta
My previous skepticism about two "Animals" on the same team, the match itself and the interaction between Cornette and Steele was fun. Don't think this is over yet. Steele must get some payback on the Prince of Polyester.
A little surprised (positively so) that Zbyszko defeated Arcidi. I'm glad you put Larry over though, he's the experienced one, and the one with an actually wrestling background ;-) But by taking a german suplex, Arcidi has my respect (i've never done it actually...) The end segment saved a lot of Arcidi's heat and momentum.
Wow, didn't see a fireball coming from Lawler, and surprised by his reactions too. To nitpick a little, not sure why a no-dq match can end in a no-contest, but this happened to me too when Reby Sky got herself injured. IMO, the other wrestler should be given the win via ref stoppage.
Not sure what Race hopes to accomplish on his own against Johnny V and three wrestlers in need of a push. He needs backup, and quick.
Ah, the visible pinfall from the face challenger. Great booking, Hennig cannot be too happy with Savage after this.
I consider Bruce's victory a big upset. He's a tag wrestler from what may basically be a JTTS team (although this might change). I'm not saying I was hoping for a big Manny push, but still.
von Erich joining the Freebirds after the match was brilliant. During the match could also have worked, but now you have a new marquee match for next live show. This is also a perfect match for Survivor Series.
Stupid ref standing in the way, stopping Orndorrf from winning the title! The match didn't look that good unfortunately, but it was typical Hogan booking, with a lot of ref bumps and interference. And you know what, it always worked for Hogan!
Not many feuds were settlede here tonight, but there is a ton of opportunites to resolve coming from this. One of your best shows in a long time, I think.

NWF WORLDWIDE Atlanta, GA | September 8, 1985 (Taped August 31, 1985)
Commentators: Gordon Solie and Jesse “The Body” Ventura
We could hardly get the normal introductory video out of the way before Jesse Ventura was proudly proclaiming Paul Orndorff the new World Heavyweight Champion. Gordon Solie had to cut him off, telling him to be quiet in the process, and told any worried fan at home that Hulk Hogan was actually still the champion. Ventura said sure, Hogan may be in possession of the title, but we all knew who should be the champion. Solie had to admit it looked like Orndorff could have defeated Hogan with the Piledriver, but the referee had been knocked out at the time. And Orndorff would later win the match via countout, and as we all know, titles cannot change hands due to countouts or disqualifications. Ventura thought that was something that needed looked into. Solie was still not convinced Hogan wouldn't have been able to kickout of the Piledriver. This time it was Ventura telling Solie to be quiet, no one in the world can kickout of Paul Orndorff's Piledriver. Ventura said a plan was in place to correct the unjust decision of the referee. The argument continued as we went to the ring for our first match.
MATCH #1 Curt Hennig vs. Ricky Reeves
What a heartbreaking evening Curt Hennig had in Atlanta a week ago. He was able to absorb the beating “Hacksaw” Butch Reed dished out on him and find a way to pin Reed's shoulders to the mat. Unfortunately for him, Randy Savage was distracting the referee at the time. In fairness to Savage, he was supposedly trying to stop the match because Reed had been pummeling Hennig for some time. Hennig would apply the Fisherman Suplex, get the three count, but no referee to award the match and the title to him. Seconds later Reed would recover and eventually win the match with his Flying Shoulderblock. Hennig was not to be denied today, however, as he quickly put Ricky Reeves away with a jumping neck snap that he has nearly perfected.
Curt Hennig pinned Ricky Reeves after a neck snap in 0:02:52. Rating: ** ½
Curt Hennig has told people in the back he does not blame Randy Savage for his failed attempt at winning the US Title. That wasn't to say he didn't want to have a word with him. He called Savage to the ring. Macho Man isn't used to be called out by anyone, but it didn't take him long to come to the ring. An angry Savage wanted to know what Hennig wanted, but Hennig told him to calm down. Hennig did not blame him for his loss at Atlanta. To be a true champion you have to roll with the punches, whatever someone throws at you, and he wasn't able to regain his momentum after he had thought he won the match. He also wanted to thank Savage for looking out for him. But he wanted to make one thing clear, if Savage ever got involved in one of his matches again, there would be no thanks afterward. There would only be a closed fist meeting his face. Savage thought he had a lot of nerve to talk to him like this. You don't have to tell him twice. If Hennig didn't want Savage's help, so be it. He wasn't ever going to get it again. Savage stormed out of the ring as Hennig stayed cool and collected.
AT THE DESK:
Jesse Ventura didn't know how to react to the events he just saw. Gordon Solie couldn't blame Curt Hennig if he was upset about what occurred in Atlanta, but he thought both men handled it like gentlemen. Ventura told Solie to check his glasses because all he saw was two men holding in their frustration. He wouldn't have been surprised if one of them popped the other in the mouth. With Savage still wanting a rematch for the US Title against Butch Reed, and Curt Hennig also deserving one for how his match with Reed went, there is sure to be another confrontation between the two in the future.
MATCH #2 Dirty Cowboys vs. The Hart Brothers
The Hart Brothers got one over on “The Raging Bull” Manny Fernandez in Atlanta. Bruce was able to score what many people are calling an upset when he pinned Fernandez in the center of the ring. Meanwhile, the Dirty Cowboys still have revenge on their minds. The Four Horsemen drove their leader and employer, Roddy Piper, out of the NWF, and they would like to collect a hefty paycheck Piper promised if they were able to do away with Flair's group. First, they needed to take care of business here against the Hart Brothers. The speed of the Hart Brothers was giving Dick Slater and Bob Orton Jr. fits in the early goings of this match. They couldn't find a way to contain it until Orton was “lucky” enough to stick his cast into the flightpath of Keith. Keith hit it head on and was woozy for the rest of the match. When Keith finally broke free of the beating, he was able to make a hot tag to Bruce. Bruce came in a house of fire, dropping both Orton and Slater with a variety of armdrag takedowns. Bruce unwisely tagged Keith back in, and this led to all four men being in the ring at the same time. MANNY FERNANDEZ decided this would be a good time to come to ringside, and during the chaos, tripped up Keith as he bounced off the ropes. Keith hit his head once again, this time on the canvas, and it left him open to be suplexed by Orton. Bruce was unable to break it up and the Hart Brothers suffered a setback on their recent victory trend.
Dirty Cowboys (Bob Orton Jr. and Dick Slater) defeated The Hart Brothers (Bruce Hart and Keith Hart) when Orton pinned Keith Hart after a back suplex in 0:08:35. Rating: ***
Fernandez raised his own arms in victory as he bellowed, “I'M NO CHICKEN!” How cheating to cost his rivals a match proves he isn't a chicken doesn't make much sense. But no one ever called the Raging Bull a scholar. Fernandez left ringside while Slater and Orton were rather proud of their win despite knowing it wasn't all their doing. We learned later that Dick Slater has challenged any member of the Horsemen to meet him in one-on-one action in two weeks here on Worldwide. Whoever takes him up on the offer is certainly going to have his hands full.
MATCH #3 “The Russian Nightmare” Nikita Koloff (w/ “Luscious” Johnny V) vs. George South
We learned during this match that Harley Race was going to have a special announcement next week. No word yet on what it might be about, but he did not have a good night in Atlanta next week. He was thoroughly dismantled by all three of Johnny V's men. Nikita Koloff may have been the one to pick up a victory over Harley Race, but the Dream Team also got their licks in. As for this bout, well, it was practically over before it started.
Nikita Koloff pinned George South with the Russian Sickle in 0:02:11. Rating: * ¼
INTERVIEW STAGE W/ THE ROAD WARRIORS AND PAUL ELLERING:
Sean Mooney welcomed the former two-time World Tag Team Champions and their manager into the studio. Mooney wanted to know Paul Ellering's reaction to another loss to Jim Cornette and the Midnight Express one week ago. Ellering said it was no secret that the Midnight Express appeared to have the Road Warriors' number. The truth was that Cornette had found ways to screw over Hawk and Animal every chance he got. He was sick of it. Hawk began with his “WELLLLL” and ended with his “What a rush!” In between he warned “Beautiful” Bobby and “Loverboy” Dennis that the Road Warriors are like a wounded animal right now. If you don't put it down for good and keep playing with it, eventually it is going to bite your arm off. Animal promised that was the plan going into the Clash of the Champions. Mooney clarified that the Road Warriors were challenging the Midnight Express for Clash of the Champions: Survivor Series. Ellering told Cornette to have his men ready because it was going to be a war on September 29th. But the men fighting it weren't going to just be the two tag teams. Apparently he had already gone to the Championship Committee, sick of Cornette's interference, and convinced them that the managers would be on the ring apron as well! With their alliance with George Steele still strong, it will be the Road Warriors, George Steele, and Paul Ellering going at it with the Midnight Express, Big Bubba Rogers, and Jim Cornette! Mama Cornette isn't going to be happy to hear her little boy is going to be stepping foot in the ring with the Road Warriors in just a few weeks' time.
MATCH #4 “The Cruncher” Larry Zbyszko vs. Dale Williams
Considering he won his match in Atlanta against Ted Arcidi, he didn't look like much of a winner when the show ended. He had to be treated my the medical staff after Arcidi assaulted him after the bell. Arcidi was not pleased that Zbyszko was able to catch him off-guard with a German Suplex, and he made him pay for it. “Superstar” Billy Graham, it should be noted, got in a few shots as well. Zbyszko was a little sore going into this match, but Dale Williams didn't have an answer for Zbyszko's hard hitting offense. Crunch Time ended this bout abruptly. Zbyszko is to the point where he doesn't care if it's three-on-one, he wants Paul Orndorff, Billy Graham, and Ted Arcidi back in the ring. He'll do whatever it takes to get them there.
Larry Zbyszko pinned Dale Williams with the Crunch Time in 0:02:19. Rating: *
AT THE DESK:
Gordon Solie started to discuss Larry Zbyszko's current feud with Orndorff, Graham, and Arcidi, but Ventura had to excuse himself. Solie wanted to know where Ventura was going. Ventura said he owed it to Paul Orndorff to be there for the celebration. Solie was confused as we went back to the ring.
CELEBRATION OF A “NEW” CHAMPION:
We soon learned what Ventura was talking about as he came to the ring. He was joined by “Superstar” Billy Graham, Ted Arcidi, Butch Reed, Johnny V, the Dream Team, and Nikita Koloff. Jesse Ventura wanted to introduce “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff to the ring. Orndorff came to the ring and shook hands with nearly all of the men in the ring. He saw Reed and Koloff weren't exactly offering their hands so he simply nodded his head at them. Ventura announced that it was time to right a wrong, to let the true champion be given time to shine, and to award Paul Orndorff the REAL World Heavyweight Championship. Billy Graham revealed a title that looked strikingly similar to Hulk Hogan's World Championship. Orndorff allowed Graham to strap it around his waist. Orndorff then posed in front of his hand-held mirror (held by Graham) while the other men in the ring lightly applauded him (sans Reed and Koloff).
Orndorff spoke on how great it was to be the true World Heavyweight Champion. He promised to be a fighting champion. Someone that all the peasants that pay to watch him could be proud of. And as champion, he knew he would have the strongest allies. That is why he was proud to announce his partners for COTC: Survivor Series. First, “The World's Strongest Man” Ted Arcidi! Second, the best wrestler of his generation, “Superstar” Billy Graham. And, lastly, the man who almost beat Hulk Hogan, “Hacksaw” Butch Reed! Orndorff patted Reed on the back while announcing his name, but he probably shouldn't have. Reed swatted Orndorff's hand away and told him to never touch him again. Reed tore the microphone out of Orndorff's hand and said this was the only way he saw to get Hogan back in the ring with him. He hoped Hogan would bring Randy Savage, bring his friends, that way he could handle all of his business at once. Reed took his US Title and stormed to the back as a dismayed Orndorff watched. Graham paid him no heed as he stepped forward saying that he and Arcidi would be there to ensure no one would do harm to the World Champion in this Survivor Series match. He couldn't wait to step back into the ring. Obviously he was wanting to erase the bad memory of the last time he was in the ring, getting destroyed by the Executioner (Larry Zbyszko). Orndorff told Hogan that he could carry around his title all he wanted, but the title he now wore proved he was the rightful champion! And he was going to prove it, along with his allies, inside the Survivor Series. The Dream Team, Johnny V, Ventura, Arcidi, and Graham fawned over Orndorff's “World Title” while Nikita stood in the corner with no expression.
AT THE DESK:
Gordon Solie had his head in his hands as he expressed what a sham the previous segment was. He once again reiterated that Hulk Hogan was the World Champion, called Paul Orndorff a fraud, and couldn't wait to hear from Hulk Hogan next week! Speaking of Hogan, he was given word that Hogan would be in action next week against “Beautiful” Bobby Eaton. We were sure to hear his reaction about Orndorff's claim to the title and who Hogan's partners would be at the Clash.
MATCH #5 Ole Anderson/”Wildfire” Tommy Rich vs. Kerry Von Erich/Michael “P.S.” Hayes
If you want to see an odd pairing, look no further than Kerry Von Erich. Von Erich could stand by no longer in Atlanta when he saw the Freebirds being systematically being destroyed by the Four Horsemen. He came to their aid, saving Terry Gordy from possibly being injured further, and ran the Horsemen off. The Freebirds are involved in their feud with the Horsemen simply because they defended Kerry from a four-on-one attack. Von Erich repaid the favor, but now they were being put into tag team matches together. To say that Hayes and Von Erich didn't completely trust one another during this match would be an understatement. Still, as the match wore, we saw more tags and they looked to be forming some sort of understanding with one another. Rich and Ole had taken advantage of the early confusion between their opponents, but were now feeling the offense of two men looking for revenge. Von Erich/Hayes were picking up steam and getting into a groove as Ole and Rich kept trying to tag the other in. Each time there would be a moment where the Horsemen would get the upper hand, but it would only be momentarily as the crowd would cheer their opponents on and give them a boost of adrenaline. Von Erich would end up surprising Ole with a flying crossbody to earn the victory for his team.
Michael Hayes and Kerry Von Erich defeated Four Horsemen (Ole Anderson and Tommy Rich) when Kerry Von Erich pinned O. Anderson after a flying crossbody in 0:09:54. Rating: * ¼
There would be no attack after the match. Immediately BUDDY ROBERTS and ICEMAN KING PARSONS were in the ring to stand with Kerry Von Erich and Michael Hayes. Not a moment too soon either as RIC FLAIR and GREG VALENTINE came out to join Ole Anderson and Tommy Rich. These eight men are on a collision course with one another, and it is all going to happen in a few weeks at Clash of the Champions.
AT THE DESK:
Gordon Solie was once again joined by Jesse Ventura. Solie couldn't believe Ventura would stoop so low as to proclaim Paul Orndorff the rightful World Champion. Ventura explained to Solie that if we had some decent officials in the National Wrestling Federation, Orndorff would be the undisputed World Champion. He saw every reason for Paul Orndorff to have his own title. Solie figured Hogan would think differently. And we were going to hear from our one true World Champion next week on Worldwide! Solie also reminded everyone that Hogan would be in the ring against “Beautiful” Bobby Eaton and the Road Warriors would also be in action! Harley Race has his special announcement, and in two weeks, Ole Anderson has stepped forward to face Dick Slater here on Worldwide. It's going to be an exciting few months all building up towards Starrcade! Be sure to tune in.

No one can kick out of the Piledriver? Leads me to believe Hogan is going to kick out of the Piledriver.
Interesting approach from Hennig. Very zen. I don't think it's going to be as simple as that though. Some sort of misunderstanding is going to happen and we're going to get a sweet fight.
The Dirty Cowboys are in a weird spot right now. Faces against the Horsemen, heels otherwise. The Horsemen are too fresh for Orton/Slater to be the first to take them down. I don't see where the Cowboys go from here. Fernandez looks like he's going to be another fun character for you too.
George South is one of my favorite jobbers ever. Glad to see him make what I think is his first appearance and get murdered by Nikita at the same time. Race's announcement better be a partner of he is boned.
LOVE Cornette being involved in the match. You can get all the serious wrestling in with the other 6, and then have Cornette doing some great comedy.
Orndorff might be fighting on too many fronts right now. Arcidi really needs to take Zbyszko out if he's going to have a shot at Hogan.
I don't know why, but I always enjoy angles involving titles used in a unique way. Someone smashes a title with a hammer, a hammer is stolen, a fake belt is used. They're just fun, and this one was no exception. I assume this leads to a match "for all the gold" down the road. Team is a bit strange, and I'm sure Orndorff was expecting better from Reed. Hogan's team surely includes Savage and Zbyszko... maybe Hennig too?
I could see Hayes/Von Erich turning into a permanent team. You have me going back and forth on which is going to happen - full-time team or Freebirds eventually turn on Von Erich. Either way, they get the win over the Horsemen duo which is huge.
The Clash is looking awesome. Throw in maybe one more SS match or a couple of regular matches and you have a full sweet card.

Hennig and Savage are on a colliding path. No way this will simmer down without fists flying.
Manny not entirely through with the Hart Brothers, by the looks of it. Gutsy move by Slater, I doubt the Horseman will come alone.
Ellering certainly has more wrestling experience than Cornette, so the advantage lies with the Road Warriors in this one.
That's a good team for Survivor Series. Opponents being Hogan, Savage, Zbyszko and.. Hennig?
Ventura's one of the more interesting characters around I think. As a principle, I don't think it's a good idea to cross the line between announcer and wrestler too often, but I can make an exception for Ventura. It has been done very nicely.

Reed seems like a wildcard.
But I am interested in who there opponents will be. I think Rey has it.

My favorite angles have always involved a hammer being stolen, Ryan.

My favorite angles have always involved a hammer being stolen, Ryan. Once I steal away Greg Valentine, you won't think so.

Gotta love the fake celebration. I'm thinking we can almost pencil in Hogan/Orndorff in for Starrcade.
I have to think the Horsemen go over the Freebirds to establish themselves as a dominant heel group. Setting up perhaps a Horsemen/Hogan feud and Flair/Hogan title matches down the road. So that makes me wonder what will happen to the Von Erich/Freebird alliance. Maybe the Freebirds split once Gordy's healthy? They kick Hayes out and Hayes teams with Von Erich? Who knows.
Thinking one more Survivor Series match is coming with Johnny V's guys going up against a Harley Race led team. Don't quite know who he recruits.
I'm actually pulling for Manny against the Harts. More Flying Burritos!!!

NWF WORLDWIDE Atlanta, GA | September 15, 1985 (Taped August 31, 1985)
Commentators: Gordon Solie and Jesse “The Body” VenturaA big day of action was ahead of us. Not only were the Road Warriors going to do battle with old rivals in the Fabulous Freebirds, but Hulk Hogan was scheduled to compete against “Beautiful” Bobby Eaton. It isn't often we get the honor of watching Hogan on Worldwide, and that alone makes this one of the more anticipated Worldwides. The argument began anew about who was the rightful World Heavyweight Champion. Ventura stood by his opinion that Paul Orndorff should be recognized as the World Champ. Solie pulled out a piece of paper that he was told to read. It came to him via the Championship Committee: “The Championship Committee wants to make it clear, in no uncertain terms, Hulk Hogan is still the NWF Heavyweight Champion of the World. We understand that Paul Orndorff has introduced a new title under the same name. We want to iterate that the title has no recognized status with the NWF. While we cannot ban its presence, we do frown upon the actions of Paul Orndorff and Billy Graham. Titles cannot change hands via countouts or disqualifications, so while we can understand the frustration felt by Paul Orndorff, there is no recourse he can take in this manner. We would appreciate him leaving his counterfeit title at home, and we will do our best to schedule a rematch in due time. That is all the Championship Committee has to say on this matter. Once again, Hulk Hogan is the one and only NWF World Heavyweight Champion.” While Gordon Solie thought that the statement should be enough to force Paul Orndorff to retract his claim of the World Title, Jesse Ventura figured it was all a ploy by the Committee to intimidate Mr. Wonderful and Superstar Graham. He knew they would never be intimidated by a bunch of suits. MATCH #1 Brutus Beefcake (w/ “Luscious” Johnny V and Hercules Hernandez) vs. Dale WilliamsOne half of the World Tag Team Champions got the call for the first match of the show. Brutus Beefcake doesn't wrestle much in singles anymore, not since forming the Dream Team with Hercules Hernandez, but he has a bright future ahead of him if he ever decides to take this route. His ring attire was as strange as ever as he was wearning bright orange tights with holes cut in around the thighs. Thankfully, the holes were covered with mesh, but even so, we all got to see a little more of Beefcake than we would have liked. Not to take anything away from his wrestling ability. He looked as good as ever putting Dale Williams down with the Sleeper. Brutus Beefcake made Dale Williams submit to the Sleeperhold in 0:03:31. Rating: 1/4*While Hercules and Johnny V celebrated with Beefcake on his victory, HARLEY RACE came down to ringside. In a sight we are not used to seeing, his left arm in a sling, his neck in a brace, and looked severely worn down. He had fought a tremendous match with Nikita Koloff a week ago, and we were witnessing the effects. Of course, the Dream Team has to be given some credit for the shape Race was in. They got their licks in after his match with Koloff. Race told Johnny V that he had done what no other person could, and that was make Race second guess if he wanted to keep going. He had brought Hercules Hernandez into the NWF to train him and leave a legacy. Instead, Hercules had dumped him to the side, and Race had been unsuccessful at his attempts to get his hands on him. And now he was a beaten down old man. He gave up. Race went to leave the ring with his head down, but Hercules stopped him. Hercules told Race he was right, he was a sad old man, and it was a shame he was giving up. Because he was willing to meet him inside the ring at the Clash in a Survivor Series match. Hercules pleaded with Race to accept the challenge while Johnny V and Beefcake seemed uncertain if this was the right decision. You can't blame Hercules though, he finally saw the man who had been chasing him for several months in a weakened state. Race appeared to be thinking this over as Hercules turned his back to try and motivate the crowd to get Race to accept. When he turned around Race had pulled a metal pipe out of his sling! With no warning Race bopped Hercules on top of the head with it! Hercules fell to the canvas and rolled to the outside. Johnny V bailed quickly, but Beefcake wasn't so lucky as he also received a shot to the arm with it. Race picked up the microphone and told them he'd be happy to meet them in the ring at the Clash! With that, Race tore off his neck brace and took off the sling. He was in fine shape, and he had his match with Hercules. AT THE DESK:Jesse Ventura didn't think the match should stand since Race had put forth a lie about what shape he was in. Gordon Solie didn't see why that should void the challenge Hercules issued. This just proved in Ventura's mind that Race was a liar and a cheat and has always been one. No matter, Ventura knew Johnny V would add Nikita Koloff to his team, and we all saw what happened the last time Nikita had Race inside the ring. Solie couldn't wait to find out who Race would find to join his team. Ventura wouldn't be surprised if Race had to go at it 4-on-1 since no one he knew would ever want to team with Race. Solie thought differently since Race was a legend of the sport and a sure fire hall of famer one day. MATCH #2 The Road Warriors (w/ Paul Ellering) vs. The Fabulous FreebirdsThis was a heated feud last year that saw the Freebirds and the Road Warriors trade the Tag Team Titles back and forth. At the time Iceman King Parsons was not even in the NWF, Buddy Roberts and the Freebirds were notorious villains, and the Road Warriors were the most dominant team in the United States. And while some things have changed, such as the Freebirds earning the fans' respect, the Road Warriors being a dominant team has not. The Freebirds knew that going in, and did their best to try and wear down the two powerhouses. Hawk and Animal have seen this used several times by the Midnight Express to defeat them, but the Freebirds didn't have the advantage of Jim Cornette on the outside harassing the Warriors. And since they've changed their ways, they also weren't using many underhanded tactics to try and control the match. So, what we ended up seeing was Roberts trying to use headlock takedowns and armdrags while Parsons was attempting to use bearhugs and abdominal stretches. The slower paced match continued with the Freebirds keeping an upper hand, but never any serious offense. It just wasn't enough, however, and Animal was able to give Parsons' spine a pop or two with a well-placed backbreaker to win the match.. The Road Warriors (Hawk and Animal) defeated The Fabulous Freebirds(Buddy Roberts and Iceman King Parsons) when Animal pinned Parsons after a backbreaker in 0:10:56. Rating: *Both teams received a nice ovation from the crowd after the match. And while there weren't handshakes or hugs after the bout, Ellering did give the Freebirds a nod of approval. The Road Warriors now turn their attention to the Clash of the Champions where they meet up with the Midnight Express, Big Bubba Rogers, and Jim Cornette in a Survivor Series style match. George Steele will be the wild card of the match. Jesse Ventura commented that Steele was probably preparing for the match by stuffing his face with couch cushions. Solie thought Ventura was underselling Steele's value to the team. INTERVIEW STAGE W/ GEORGE STEELE:Speaking of the Animal, George Steele was with Sean Mooney. Mooney wanted to know what Steele's strategy would be to deal with Big Bubba and the rest of Cornette's men. Steele didn't have any answers for Mooney as he pet the suit Mooney was wearing. Mooney tried to bat Steele's hands away, but that only earned him a growl from the veteran. Jesse Ventura stepped in, pushing Mooney to the side, and told him he'd take care of this interview. You have to dumb yourself down to Steele's level if you wanted to have a conversation with him. Ventura pulled out a tennis racket he had set against the camera and motioned like he was going to hit Steele over the head with it. “You. Dumb. You get hit with racket. You. Loser.” Ventura laughed as he raised the tennis racket in the air like he had achieved something. Steele was not in a jovial mood by this point as he grabbed the racket from Ventura's hand and walloped Ventura's backside with it. Ventura let out a yelp as Steele chased him around the studio with it. MATCH #3 “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair (w/ Woman) vs. George SouthJesse Ventura joined back up with Gordon Solie on commentary in the middle of this match. He was clearly out of breath and chastised Solie for laughing at him while he was being chased around by that lunatic. Ventura thought Steele should be nowhere near a wrestling ring and instead be thrown into a zoo with the other wild animals. Ventura would calm down and return his attention to the match at hand that saw Ric Flair at the top of his game. The Figure-Four Leglock was applied after he had properly weakened George South's knee. South held on for a few seconds, but Flair used the ropes for extra leverage while referee Gil Roman was asking South if he would give it up. He would have given up the match anyway, but the added pressure from Flair using the ropes caused South to scream out that he quit. Ric Flair made George South submit to the Figure-Four Leglock in 0:03:41. Rating: * ½
A MONEY DECISION:Once Woman had joined Ric Flair in the ring after the match, Flair wanted to address the crowd. He told them that he lived the life of the Nature Boy, fast cars, expensive champagne, and a new woman every night. Whoo! Woman caressed Flair's chest, perfectly fine with Flair's admission. Flair said the formation of the Horsemen was to ensure not only that he cemented himself as the greatest of all time, but to give himself, Ole Anderson, Greg Valentine, and Tommy Rich the lifestyle they so richly deserve. To do that he has taken on a financial adviser that will guide him in all of those endeavors. Flair brought down the man he had hired, JAMES J. DILLON, who he referred to as JJ. Dillon thanked Flair for having faith in him, and he promised that with his knowledge the Horsemen will never want for anything. Flair shook the man's hand and told the audience that with the money JJ Dillon provides, with Woman's “friendly” support, and with the backing of the three most dangerous men on the planet, the Horsemen, the Nature Boy was riding this train all the way to the top of the mountain. His aim was the World Title, but first he was going to put down the pests known as the Fabulous Freebirds. Once he had done that, he was going to teach Kerry Von Erich how unwise it was to mess with the Horsemen. His goal was to get the Survivor Series style match down to 4-on-1. Then Kerry was going to be the life of the party. Whoo! AT THE DESK:Gordon Solie didn't feel a financial adviser had any business being on a wrestling show. Jesse Ventura thought it was a great move by Ric Flair. JJ Dillon can now focus on keeping the money flowing while Flair lives the life of the Nature Boy. Solie wanted to know Dillon's background, but Ventura said if Flair was backing him, that was all he needed to know. Gordon Solie also revealed that next week we will see a clip from an upcoming Atlanta Braves game. Apparently the World Champion, Hulk Hogan, would be throwing out the first pitch, and the NWF cameras would be there to record it. Solie hoped catcher Larry Owen would have special reinforcement in his glove because Hogan could probably throw over a 100MPH. Ventura would like to see Dale Murphy step in and drill one right back at Hogan, but Solie reassured the viewers that the opening pitch is ceremonial and there would be no batter to take a swing. MATCH #4 Non-Title Match “Hacksaw” Butch Reed vs. Ricky ReevesOne man that probably wouldn't mind taking a bat to Hulk Hogan, US Champion Butch Reed, was in action next. Paul Orndorff couldn't have been too thrilled that Reed blew him off last week when he was announced as one of Mr. Wonderful's partners. Reed has been a loner for the past year or so, though, so it could hardly have been a surprise. Reed cut an insert promo where he once again begged Hogan to add Randy Savage and Curt Hennig to his team. He wanted the opportunity to take out Hogan, Savage, and Hennig in one match. Three birds with one stone. In the ring, Reed took some enjoyment pounding away on Ricky Reeves before delivering his brutal Flying Shoulderblock. Butch Reed pinned Ricky Reeves with the Flying Shoulderblock in 0:02:16. Rating: 3/4*
AT THE DESK:Before our final match of the evening, Gordon Solie wanted to discuss the recent actions of Jerry “The King” Lawler. There had been no word from either Lawler or “Maniac” Matt Borne since their no-dq match in which Lawler threw a fireball into Borne's face. Only today had Solie finally learned that Borne has been in-and-out of the hospital with the severe burn he suffered. Lawler has been inconsolable due to his actions. It is unclear when or if Borne will be able to return to the ring, but we will hear from him at the Clash of the Champions as he has decided to make an appearance. Lawler, meanwhile, will be in action next week. It will be the first time he has stepped into the ring the incident. Ventura was quiet on the subject except to say he felt Lawler should be suspended from wrestling for his unforgivable act. MATCH #5 Non-Title Match Hulk Hogan vs. “Beautiful” Bobby Eaton (w/ Jim Cornette and Big Bubba Rogers)Jim Cornette has to be worried about the upcoming Survivor Series match at the Clash of the Champions. He'll put his hands on opposing wrestlers when needed, but he has to know Hawk and Animal are going to be chomping at the bit to get their hands on him. Not to mention George Steele who, quite frankly, wants to chomp on anyone. But even with the stress he must be feeling about that match, he also knows what a feather in his cap it would be for “Beautiful” Bobby to get a victory over World Champion Hulk Hogan. Of course, that is far easier said than done. Eaton ambushed Hogan before the bell before Hogan could even rip his shirt off. Eaton kept on the pressure, and the crowd started to get nervous when Eaton climbed to the top rope. We were just a few minutes into the match and Eaton was going for his Alabama Jam! To the delight of the crowd Hogan rolled out of the way, however, and Eaton hit nothing but canvas. Hogan drilled Eaton with several right hands as he started to turn on the adrenaline. Cornette saw the match quickly slipping away. He hopped up on the ring apron only to be nailed with a right hand himself. Cornette flopped like a wet fish to the ringside floor. Big Bubba couldn't stand idly by while his employer was assaulted as he went to enter the ring. He got halfway through the ropes when Hogan kicked him in the midsection. Referee Dave Hebner stood by and watched as Hogan grabbed Big Bubba and a groggy Eaton by their heads and rammed them together. Eaton fell to the mat as Bubba wobbled inside the ring. Hogan clotheslined him to send him over the top rope. Eaton had got back to his feet, but his attempt at a punch was blocked by Hogan. Hogan slammed Eaton to the mat, hit the Big Leg Drop, and got the three count to send the crowd into a frenzy. Hulk Hogan pinned Bobby Eaton with the Big Leg Drop in 0:06:43. Rating: * 1/4Cornette was practically out of it as Big Bubba hoisted him onto his shoulder. He carried him to the back while “Beautiful” Bobby crawled halfway up the aisle. Meanwhile, Hogan posed in front of the crowd to a huge ovation. Hogan cut his usual celebration in half when he motioned that he wanted a microphone. Hogan lifted the World Title up and told Paul Orndorff he could carry around that other gold belt all he wanted, everyone knew who the real World Champion was. And if PAULA Orndorff really needed him to prove it, he'd do it at the Clash of the Champions. He wasn't coming alone either. He was bringing several other Hulkamaniacs! And he knew one man that was dying to get his hands on Orndorff, Arcidi, and Graham...LARRY ZBYSZKO! The crowd exploded as Zbyszko walked down the aisle and joined Hogan in the ring. Zbyszko shook Hogan's hand and guaranteed that he'd take care of Arcidi, Graham, and Orndorff if they had the guts to step into the ring with the Cruncher. Hogan said he also loved to grant wishes, and Reed was going to get his because the Mega Powers were reuniting for one more match. And he called RANDY SAVAGE to join him in the ring. Savage came to the ring with Miss Elizabeth who was looking as spectacular as ever. Savage told Hogan it would be a pleasure to drive his elbow directly into Reed's heart. The way he saw it, with the three men in the ring, they didn't even need a fourth. They'd send Paul Orndorff's team running like the cowards they were. Zbyszko agreed. The Cruncher doesn't trust many men, and he thought the three of them were more than capable of taking care of business. Hogan shook his head. Hogan said he was thinking out side the box and there was another man who had shown he was ready to take that next step. Someone that was going to be a future star in the sport. That man was CURT HENNIG! Curt Hennig made his way down the aisle and into the ring while Savage vehemently argued with Hogan. Zbyszko was a little more relaxed with the decision as he shook Hennig's hand, but Savage refused. Savage was telling Hogan that Hennig wasn't ready for such a match and that he would simply get destroyed out there. There was no room for a weak link. Hogan disagreed, and since it was his team, the decision stood. Curt Hennig would be a part of the team. Savage told Hennig he better man up because he wasn't going to lose the match trying to save him all night long. Hennig reminded Savage that he was the one that had Reed pinned if it weren't for Savage's interference. Meanwhile, Savage had been CLEANLY pinned by Reed. So, maybe it was Savage that would be needing to be rescued. Savage told him to watch his mouth and gave him a shove. Hennig staggered back...and then cold cocked Savage with a left hand! Zbyszko and Hogan quickly stepped in between the two before it could go much further. Savage pointed directly at Hennig and told him he was going to regret that. He grabbed Miss Elizabeth by the hand and pulled her to the back. Hogan has his team, but I doubt he was wanting this much turmoil going into their match. AT THE DESK:Gordon Solie worried that Hulk Hogan may have upset the team's chemistry by adding Curt Hennig to it. Jesse Ventura actually stood up for Hennig as he said that it wasn't Hennig's fault. It was all Hogan's fault. He should have listened to his teammates. Solie said most of the time the friction in Hogan's team would make them underdogs, but he also had to note that Butch Reed doesn't get along with anyone. Ventura disagreed as he reminded Solie that Reed and Ventura made a great team when they defeated the Superpowers. And Ventura pinned Hogan in that match (just in case Solie had forgotten). Ventura started to recollect the best night of his career as Solie put his head in his hands. He had apparently heard this before. Solie finally cut him off by saying they were out of time. Tune in next week where “Dirty” Dick Slater looks for revenge against the Horsemen as he does battle with Ole Anderson. We will have clips of the World Champion throwing out the first pitch in an Atlanta Braves game, and much more! Ventura makes a great argument, just as he always does.
I liked how Hennig handled the situation with Savage but he might be setting himself for a major beatdown without Savage looking out for him.
I'm hoping the Dirty Cowboys get back on track after this much needed win. I doubt they'll ever get one up on the Horsemen so they're best interests would be to just move on, forget about Piper, and get some wins.
First thing that comes to mind when I hear of Race's special announcement is retirement. I'm highly doubtful that's what the announcement is but I don't have any other guesses at the moment.
Nice touch throwing Jim Cornette into the match at Survivor Series. That's going to be one hell of an entertaining match.
It sounds to me like Larry Z is likely going to end up opposing Orndorff, Grahama, & Arcidi at Survivor Series one way or another.
Ornorff walking around with fake World Championship belt is such good heat. As he's surrounded himself with an awesome group of allies. Orndorff's team for Survivor Series is awesome and Hogan's team pretty much fills itself out as him, Larry Z, Savage, and Hennig. I could be wrong though.
Liked seeing Hayes & Kerry started to work together as the match wore on. I'm looking forward to this 4-on-4 match the most and this was a great build for it.

Nice touch to start the show. I like when the mysterious championship committee gets involved. And even after a statement that was pretty damn clear, love how Ventura still insists on calling Orndorff champ.
Okay, you know I'm not a big fan of Race at this point, but that was pretty awesome. Hercules may have bitten off more than he can chew now. Race has to get his revenge now.
The Road Warriors needed a win, and they got it here. They've looked painfully human recently against the Midnight Express, so this win was big. And for the Freebirds, there's no shame in dropping a match to Hawk and Animal.
Haha. Steele is a great interview.
Was wondering when Dillon would become part of the fold. Now your Horsemen, for the being being, are complete.
Hey, you're stealing my thing of bringing in celebrities! It was patented! Though one has to love seeing a Dale Murphy reference.
Reed still looks awesome. One of your better jobs at building someone, really.
I like the remorse shown by Lawler. It will come back to bite him though. You can't show a guy like Borne any sympathy or you'll be the one who ends up in the hospital.
Standard Hogan match, but Eaton looked good and got a little offense in. Can't complain with that.
Hogan's team is strong on paper, but man, that really took no time to fall apart. Hennig and Savage are going to end up tearing each other apart.
Clash keeps shaping up. This was an eventful show, for sure.

September 15
I like that the Committee has addressed the matter. It completely clears up any potential confusion about the situation and it also reiterates just how pompous and obnoxious Orndorff is.
A devious ploy by Race to get his match with Hercules. I was beginning to think this was the end for Race but just like that he's back on track.
A decent little match with the Road Warrios beating the Freebirds. The effort of the Freebirds solidifies them as fan favorites since they didn't cheat or bend the rules.
Entertaining skit with Steele and Ventura. Steele may not be able to have the best matches but he's an absolute attraction. Plus, the kids love him!
JJ Dillon is in! As different as the Horsemen in this Universe are the inclusion of JJ makes it feel a bit more comfortable.
Thorougly enjoyed the discussion about Hogan throwing out the first pitch.
With so many alliances I like that you always are quick to point out the Reed works alone. It makes him all that more impressive.
I'm curious to see how Lawler and Bourne plays out. What started as a lower card feud could be a defining point in both of their careers.
A fun headlining match for Worldwide but the segment afterwards was great! I loved how Hogan introduced each guy individually. Made it truely feel like the SUrivor Series of old and just having Hogan make the intros gave each individual a little rub. I didn't see the punch from Henning coming, though. That's likely to get explosive at COTC:SS.

7/28/85 House Show
Those must have been some pretty cartwheels from Bellomo. That didn’t help him against Rich, though.
That’s a nice way to put over Bubba’s power. Not many men could take out Animal like that. The Road Warriors are going to want their revenge.
More smoke with regards to the Freebrids turning face.
Great moment with “The Executioner” showing up and taking it to Graham. Steve King was an idiot if he expected to get paid afdter what went down.
Race’s temper cost SOTO. Not surprising with a hothead like Race, but his issue with Hercules is personal.
The crowd for this six man must have been hot. And there it is, Rich was in on it! And Piper’s gone!! That’s quite the debut for this quartet. There is a lot of potential and it’s a great group.
Borne may think he’s outsmarting Lawler, but he just might wake up the more vicious side.
Wow, Ventura is going to be insufferable after this match. And it looks like we may be starting the road to Hogan vs. Orndorff. Reed has been wonderful for you and I can see him taking the Unites States title from Savage.
Yes!! Hogan vs. Ventura!! This is going to be great. Jesse’s not winning, but his act leading up to this should be fantastic.
8/4/85 Worldwide
Jesse is appropriately over the top and insufferable. This is great! And The Body Rules! I first heard about this musical masterpiece a few months ago in a Cracked article. I guess the only question is who gets Life At The Outpost as their entrance theme.
The Harts needed that win.
George Steele! Awesome, he should be a fun act to have around. I like Reed’s chances against Savage.
Koloff continues his dominance.
I was not expecting Kerry’s award presentation to be interrupted by Flair and his group. I thought we were going to get some other Texan complaining he should have got it. But I like what this sets up. There’s the Horsemen name. Could this lead to Kerry teaming up with the Freebirds against the Horsemen?
The Mountaineers? Okay, this could be fun.
Good main event between Chosyu and Slater.
Those promos by Hogan and Ventura were fantastic and I’m hyped for Charleston!
8/11/85 – Worldwide
Jesse has his priorities straight. I don’t give him a snowball’s chance in hell, but I expect chicanery to abound.
Nice showcase for Bubba. He’s really green around this time, but he should be able to show off his power without problems. That match with Animal is going to be a train wreck.
Nice to see Manny. Hopefully he can do something worthwhile. You’ve really done a great job with Borne.
Savage is pumped for tonight! It should be a great match. What does Hayes have in mind?
Well, we now know where the Cowboys stand on the heel/face alignment.
Fantastic main event and the Horsemen keep establishing themselves a s a force to be reckoned with.
I think Graham and Orndorff have a plan for tonight. I mean, Zbyszko put one over on them last time, so they better come up with something.
8/11/85 House Show
Another win for Johnny V’s crew. Race has got to be pretty aggravated by this. And SOTO’s heading back to Japan. They had a really good run.
The Horsemen win and they keep establishing themselves as probably the most dominant force right now in the NWF.
Borne does it again! Uh oh, I think Lawler’s at his breaking point. Reed gets gold. He deserves it after the way he’s gotten over. And Savage comes out looking good in the loss.
Ted Arcidi? Would have never guessed he’d show up. Graham did have a plan after all and we are now getting Hogan vs. Orndorff.
Bubba vs. Animal was quick and painless (well, not for Bubba) and gives the Warriors a victory in this ongoing feud.
Flair uses his tricks to get the win on Kerry. Here come the Freebirds (with Gordy!!) and they’re helping Kerry. Horsemen vs. Freebirds is potentially awesome! Kerry has not warmed up to the Freebirds and who can blame him after what he’s been through with them.
Ventura gave it a try, but even with the pre-match attack, Hogan puts him away. I wonder if he’ll be all humble about this on commentary (yeah right!). Orndorff better watch out, Hulkamania’s going to run wild over him.

8/18/85 – Worldwide
Ouch, poor Jesse. The physical bruises will heal quicker than his bruised ego.
Valentine with a good win and it seems we’re full steam ahead with a Horsemen vs. Freebirds feud.
Nice finisher for Arcidi. I’m actually glad that you’re bringing in some of the fringier guys from this time period. It’s no fun only having the bigger names, then it becomes a problem of what to do with all of them and keeping them as big stars (“If we’re all special, no one is”). Sometimes it’s these niche guys that are more fun to work with. Looks like Orndorff’s feud with Zbyszko has been shifted to Arcidi.
Needed win for the Cowboys, but I don’t see them getting payback on the Horsemen.
Wow, did not see Hennig getting the title shot. I can understand the reasoning, but that is not going to sit well with Savage at all.
Koloff continues his bulldozing. You are building him up well for when he gets that clash with Hogan.
The main event goes as expected. Kerry makes the save and it looks like it was returning the favor only. Still no acceptance from Kerry for the Freebirds. This Kerry/Freebirds dynamic is well done.
8/25/85 – Worldwide
Hogan puts Orndorff on notice! That Atlanta show is going to be something.
The Mountaineers should be a fun team to round out the tag ranks.
Cornette’s got his guys working well. Well, Manny’s made two enemies in the Hart brothers.
The Road Warriors and George Steele are quite the interesting trio.
Race won’t back down, even if the match is against Nikita. This might be his undoing.
It sounds like Lawler is done holding back and who knows what Borne has woken up.
Arcidi is actually working well with Graham and Orndorff. And Ventura is going to be Orndorff’s number one cheerleader on commentary.
Important win for Hennig as he gears up to challenge Reed.
9/1/85 Worldwide
Poor Manny, he’s now going to be taunted as the Raging Chicken. Impromptu match sees Manny get the better of Keith. And Bruce challenges for later tonight. Will Manny go two for two against the Harts?
Larry’s got unfinished business with Orndorff, but it’ll have to wait until Orndorff is done with Hogan.
Steele should be a fun guy to write.
You’d have to think Kerry’s going to do the honorable thing and team with the Freebirds.
Volatile situation brewing between Hennig and Savage, mostly because of Savage.
A showcase for Bubba. Still pretty green, but showing off his power.
Cowboys get a needed win, but they’re treading water if they insist on going after the Horsemen.
Jesse’s been great as the Orndorff cheerleader on commentary with the victory party talk.
9/1/85 – House Show
Nice opening match with the six man tag. The Express steal the win and this has got to infuriate the Warriors more.
Zbyszko gets the win, but you did a good job in keeping Arcidi strong as a threat. This issue is not settled.
Whoa, it looks like Lawler went a bit too far. Lawler’s in shock, it looks like it may have been instinct. Wow, this just kicked this feud into overdrive.
It looks like Johnny V may have gotten rid of Race. Then again, Race has proven to be tough and stubborn.
It’s official, COTC and Starrcade on their way!
Everything about the US title match was well done. Reed retains, Hennig is built up more and Savage gets involved and costs Hennig a chance at victory. It looks like we are heading towards a Hennig vs. Savage showdown.
Well, at least the Harts got some payback on Manny.
Valiant effort by the Freebirds but they were outnumbered. That post match scene was classic, especially Kerry saving an injured Gordy. It looks like Kerry has finally decided to trust the Freebirds.
That Orndorff CO win is going to add more fuel to the fire of this rivalry. I’d like to see Hogan take on Graham one on one as part of this feud build.
Two great matches already set for Survivor Series.

9/8/85 – Worldwide
Ventura continues being Orndorff’s number one fan on commentary. They’re going to be insufferable about the CO victory.
Hennig is taking the high road, but Savage is volatile enough for this to escalate further. The eventual match should be spectacular.
It looks like Manny is not done with the Harts. Another win for the Cowboys and they still are after the Horsemen.
A special announcement from Race? I don’t think he’d quit, but who knows.
Awesome! That Survivor Series match between the Warriors and Midnights is going to be a blast. I’m already chuckling at the possibilities of Cornette and Steele interacting in the match.
Zbyszko’s best bet to get at that trio is being on Hogan’s team.
That entire “crowning celebration” was absolute gold. Just a fantastic segment all around and it really highlighted the pompous ass Orndorff is, Reed’s loner act and Koloff’s icy demeanor. Orndorff’s team pretty much suggests that it’s Zbyszko, Savage and Hennig teaming with Hogan, right?
It might be just a TV main event, but I love that we’re getting Hogan vs. Eaton singles match.
Great main event and it’s nice to see Hayes and Kerry working together. A good win for the new alliance and I’m really looking forward to the match at COTC: Survivor Series.
9/15/85 – Worldwide
You are knocking it out of the park with the Orndorff declaring himself champion bit. I don’t think that statement will do anything to stop Orndorff and his cheerleaders from still proclaiming him the champ.
Race, you magnificent old bastard you. That was a great way to lure Hercules into the match. With Borne’s status up in the air, it’s either Manny Fernandez or someone new completing Johnny V’s team. Race has possibilities for partners. I don’t think Lawler’s up for wrestling, but he’s got the Harts (likely if it’s Manny on the other team), Mountaineers and Bellomo (is he still around?; he did make that promise to Race) as possibilities. This leaves the Cowboys hanging.
Another match that cements the Freebirds as faces.
Like I said, Steele should be fun to write. That was a fun interview segment.
The Horsemen throw down the gauntlet and we get the debut of JJ Dillon! Add Gordy at ringside for the Freebirds and Kerry and this match should be quite the barn burner.
Nice bit with Hogan throwing out the first pitch. Will it be without incident though?
Others have said it, but you’ve done a wonderful job with Reed.
Hogan wins his match and introduces his team. Great touch to have them be given introductions one by one. Savage and Hennig on the same team is going to cause problems though.
Jesse remembering the good times. I’m sure he’ll get more mileage out of that pin for many years to come.
Can’t wait for Survivor Series. And it looks like we already have four or five possible matches for Starrcade.

NWF WORLDWIDE Atlanta, GA | September 22, 1985 (Taped September 21, 1985)
Commentators: Gordon Solie and Jesse “The Body” VenturaAfter the heated ending to last week's Worldwide, the only topic of conversation that made sense to open with was the chemistry of Hulk Hogan's team. Gordon Solie had news that Randy Savage was stopped by Sean Mooney in the back after the show, and they had a video tape of what was said. MACHO MADNESS ERUPTS:Randy Savage stormed down a hallway with Miss Elizabeth chasing after him. She was near tears as Savage was muttering to himself. Sean Mooney stepped in front to get a word with Savage and almost received a right hand for his troubles. Mooney flinched away from Savage, but ever the professional, still asked Savage for his reaction to being hit with a closed fist by Curt Hennig. The Macho Man said Hennig had a lot of nerve putting his hands on him. He was done with Hennig, and if Hulk Hogan wanted him on his Survivor Series team then he also needed to be done with Hennig. Mooney asked Savage to clarify his stance, and Savage said in no uncertain terms that if Hogan kept Hennig on the team then he would refuse to be a part of it. Savage grabbed Elizabeth by the hand and shoved his way through the door to exit the arena. Elizabeth could be heard trying to calm her boyfriend down as she tried to keep pace. AT THE DESK:Jesse Ventura tried to place the blame firmly on Hulk Hogan for not listening to Randy Savage. He should never have brought Curt Hennig into the team. Gordon Solie didn't think Hogan could have known Savage would be so against Hennig joining the team. You only had to see what had occurred the past few weeks between Savage and Hennig to realize there would be problems. Ventura reminded Solie of that point. Solie figured Hogan would restore order on his team by next week. He couldn't foresee Savage abandoning his team simply because of a disagreement with one team member. Ventura told Solie that Savage has a bit of an ego, and he could easily Savage thinking Hogan adding Hennig to the team as an insult. There was no need for them to book a hotel room for Savage at the Clash because he wasn't going to be there! Strong opinion from the Body. Match #1 Buddy Roberts vs. Steve KingWe haven't seen much of Steve King since his embarrassing run as the Executioner. He had been a Worldwide regular up to that point, but after being assaulted by Larry Zbyszko in the locker room and driven into the mat with the Piledriver by Paul Orndorff afterward, he needed some time off. It was nice to see him back in the ring. Make no mistake about it, though, the person with real talent in the match was Buddy Roberts. Roberts was able to keep King neutralized for most of the match before finishing him with the DDT. Roberts needs to be ready when it comes time for the Survivor Series match with the Four Horsemen at the Clash of the Champions, and it looks like he will be. The main question will be if Kerry Von Erich can come together with the Freebirds and have any chance against the tight knit group of the Horsemen. Buddy Roberts pinned Steve King with the DDT in 0:04:17. Rating: -1/2*
AN UNLIKELY ALLIANCE:Back in the studio, Kerry Von Erich and Michael Hayes stood on the interview stage with Sean Mooney. Hayes acknowledged Buddy Roberts' victory a few seconds ago by stating that the Horsemen had that to look forward to in one week. Mooney questioned Von Erich if he could trust the Freebirds which earned him a nasty look from Hayes. Von Erich told Mooney he had been asked that question numerous times. He'd asked himself that question numerous times. But it came down to the fact that the Freebirds were the only ones brave enough to stand with him against the Horsemen and he couldn't let them fight his battle for him. The Horsemen thought they had found weak prey in Kerry Von Erich, but they were dead wrong. Hayes agreed with Von Erich. He had once thought Von Erich weak and tried to abuse him in the worst ways possible. In fighting the Freebirds by himself, Von Erich proved what a competitor he was, and changed the way the Freebirds looked at him. The Freebirds were going to stand strong with Von Erich and show the Horsemen there is only room for one dominant group in the NWF. Von Erich and Hayes shook hands as we went back to the ring. Match #2 Non-Title Match The Dream Team (w/ “Luscious” Johnny V) vs. The Hart BrothersThis was a huge opportunity for the Hart Brothers as they were pitted against the World Tag Team Champions. A win here would catapult them right into contention for the titles. Easier said than done, however, as Hercules Hernandez and Brutus Beefcake have shown little in the way of weakness since forming their Dream Team. A lot of that can be credited to Johnny V keeping them focused in the ring and not being distracted by someone like Harley Race. After last week that focus seemed to be dwindling as Hercules kept looking up the aisle to make sure Race wasn't going to make an appearance. That left Beefcake to try and do most of the work inside the ring. He was having trouble dealing with the mat wrestling of Bruce and the faster pace of Keith. And when he was finally able to break free to try and make a tag to Hercules, Hercules was looking up the aisle and didn't see his partner! Johnny V gave Hercules an earful as Beefcake was pulled back into the center of the ring by Keith. It was only a matter of time before the Hart Brothers would be able to finish off Beefcake, but it all went up in smoke when MANNY FERNANDEZ walked down the aisle. Keith was perched on the top turnbuckle when Fernandez shoved him off. Keith crashed to the mat while Beefcake finally made the tag to Hercules. Hercules, wanting to make up for his gaffe earlier, quickly came into the ring and planted Keith with a gutwrench suplex to get the victory. The Dream Team (Brutus Beefcake and Hercules Hernandez) defeated The Hart Brothers (Keith Hart and Bruce Hart) when Hercules pinned Keith Hart after a gutwrench suplex in 0:09:18. Rating: 1/2*After the match was over, Fernandez tried to put the boots to Keith Hart, but was interrupted by Bruce. Unfortunately for Bruce, he bumped into Hercules. Hernandez took offense as he locked Bruce in the Full Nelson while Fernandez continued to punish the younger Keith. Fernandez could be heard shouting that he was no chicken. This only went on for a few seconds before HARLEY RACE stormed the ring! Hercules nearly killed himself as he jumped out of the ring. Beefcake followed shortly after, but Fernandez wasn't so lucky. He got a few slaps upside the head and then a big headbutt which sent him falling through the ropes. The Hart Brothers joined with Race to stand guard inside the ring as Johnny V, the Dream Team, and Fernandez walked back up the aisle. It was clear they wanted nothing to do with them. That is until Keith Hart got on the microphone and called Fernandez a chicken for avoiding a fight. This sent Fernandez into a frenzy saying, “I'M NOT A CHICKEN!” The crowd started to chant “chicken” again as Fernandez told the fans to shut up. AT THE DESK:After a batch of commercials, Solie told the viewers he had just been told that the Hart Brothers had signed on to be on Harley Race's team next week at the Clash of the Champions. Due to this, Manny Fernandez in a desperate attempt to prove that he is not a chicken has agreed to partner with the Dream Team and Nikita Koloff. That leaves one slot left on Race's team, but no word yet on who that last partner will be. Jesse Ventura figured that a couple of losers like the Hart Brothers would align with another loser like Race. He thought there was a good chance “Luscious” Johnny V's team might walk away with a clean sweep in their Survivor Series match. Match #3 The Road Warriors (w/ Paul Ellering & George “The Animal” Steele) vs. Tommy Lane/Gerald FinleyThe Road Warriors were preparing themselves for the upcoming Survivor Series match, and no better way to do that than to get in the ring. Tommy Lane and Gerald Finley got the unenviable task of trying to derail Hawk and Animal. While the beating was just beginning, Jim Cornette provided an insert promo. Cornette told Paul Ellering that he may have thought he got one over on Cornette, but the joke was on him. He had Big Bubba Rogers to watch his back in the Survivor Series match. There was a reason Rogers was receiving a monstrous paycheck every week. Rogers was going to ensure that neither Ellering, the freak George Steele, or the two clowns in makeup got their hands on him. Mama Cornette was going to be so proud of her little boy when he came home victorious! Cornette may be putting on a brave face, but there is no way he isn't wetting himself at the thought of Hawk, Animal, or George Steele getting their hands on him. Steele spent most of this match walking around ringside and petting the fans at ringside. Surprisingly enough, there was almost a line of fans waiting to be “groomed” by the Animal. Meanwhile, back in the ring Animal was putting the finishing touches on Tommy Lane. The Road Warriors (Hawk and Animal) defeated Tommy Lane and Gerard Finley when Animal pinned Lane with the Powerslam in 0:02:53. Rating: 1/4* (Jim Jeffers no-showed.)The Road Warriors have had difficulties with the Midnight Express in the recent past, but this may just be the style of match where they can work around the interference of Cornette and Rogers. Everyone will be a legal participant in the match. Cornette won't be able to hide on the outside as he'll be forced to stand on the ring apron beside “Beautiful” Bobby, “Loverboy” Dennis, and Big Bubba. Match #4 Jerry “The King” Lawler vs. Ricky ReevesIn the first action he's seen since throwing a fireball in Matt Borne's face in Atlanta, Lawler was very subdued. It almost cost him several times during this match as Ricky Reeves was taking advantage of Lawler's lack of killer instinct. We thought we were about to see the upset of the decade when Reeves climbed to the top rope and flew off with a splash, but Lawler easily rolled out of the way. Lawler motioned that he was going for the Piledriver, but he had a change of heart at the last moment. Instead he rolled Reeves up in a small package and pinned him with the non-impact move. Jerry Lawler pinned Ricky Reeves with a small package in 0:02:52. Rating: 1/2*Lawler quickly rolled out of the ring and made his way up the aisle. He was stopped by Sean Mooney who wanted to know what was going on in Lawler's mind. Lawler said he had reverted back to his old ways in his feud with Matt Borne, and it was something he could not forgive himself for. He made a promise to himself and the Von Erich family that he would do them proud after David Von Erich's death. He had failed on that promise. Only now did he realize he had never changed from that rotten bastard that used to torment other wrestlers. And now he had put one of those wrestlers on the shelf due to his anger. He apologized to Borne and his family, and hoped that one day he could be forgiven. Lawler walked past Mooney with his head down. AT THE DESK:Gordon Solie was taken aback at how the remorse Jerry Lawler showed. Jesse Ventura didn't think it was enough. He thought Lawler should be suspended indefinitely. Lawler had taken away Borne's career and future. There was no way to apologize for something that drastic. Ventura hoped we'd hear good news from Borne about his recovery at the upcoming Clash of the Champions. Before we went to the main event, Gordon Solie said they had a special clip to show of a first pitch before an Atlanta Braves game. The ceremony did not go as planned, but to find out what Solie meant by that you had to watch the clip. FIRST PITCH:A hand-held camera video taped the announcement of the World Heavyweight Champion throwing out the first pitch. The crowd cheered as Hulk Hogan was introduced. A few seconds later Hulk Hogan was still nowhere to be seen. The crowd was going restless when “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff, counterfeit World Title around his waist, and “Superstar” Billy Graham walked out of the dugout! Orndorff bowed to the crowd, who mostly booed (some weren't quite sure how to react), and then made his way out to the mound. He had a baseball in hand and was determined to toss out the first pitch. The announcer said over the PA that Orndorff was not the World Heavyweight Champion and wanted to know the meaning of this. Orndorff didn't pay any heed as he stepped onto the rubber. A few men who weren't going to let this slide sprung into action as Dale Murphy, Rafael Ramirez, and Glenn Hubbard all ran out to the mound. They might have been smiling and laughing, but were still very forceful as they shoved Orndorff off the mound! You could tell Mr. Wonderful was appalled at the way he was being treated while Billy Graham was shouting that they didn't know who they were messing with. They continued to shove Orndorff until he turned tail to walk back into the dugout. He was still shouting that he was the rightful World Champion all the way back to the locker rooms. After that was taken care of, the PA announced Hulk Hogan once again. This time Hogan made his way out of the dugout to an ovation from half the crowd. Hogan tore his shirt off before stomping his way onto the mound. He tossed out the first pitch (high and outside) to Larry Owen and then shook hands with the men that had chased Orndorff off. Rafael Ramirez, Dale Murphy, and Glenn Hubbard all took turns getting a picture taken with the World Title and Hulk Hogan standing beside them. AT THE DESK:Jesse Ventura wanted to know why the Atlanta Braves would have wanted Hulk Hogan to throw out the first pitch when the REAL World Champion was right there. He thought he might just give Ted Turner a piece of his mind the next time they had dinner together. Gordon Solie thought the next time Ventura sat down with Turner would be the first and last. Match #5 Ole Anderson (w/ JJ Dillon) vs. “Dirty” Dick Slater (w/ “Cowboy” Bob Orton Jr.)You have to hand it to the Dirty Cowboys. Roddy Piper is no longer in the NWF yet they continue to chase after the Horsemen. The paycheck promised to them if they are able to rid the NWF of Ric Flair and his stable probably has something to do with it, but it still shows incredible resiliency. The Horsemen, meanwhile, are not only trying to hold off the Cowboys, but are also involved in a heated feud with the Freebirds and Kerry Von Erich. It is never easy to fight a war on two fronts. Fighting against the Dirty Cowboys, the Freebirds, and Kerry Von Erich has to be near impossible. Ole Anderson was going to try and handle the Cowboys in this match and even brought JJ Dillon to ringside with him. Solie wanted to know why the Horsemen's financial adviser needed to be at ringside, but Ventura thought he was only there because he had a meeting with Flair later on in the day. The match was about what you'd expect between two brawlers. A lot of fists were thrown with neither man getting a decided advantage. Referee Gil Roman had to keep breaking up the brawl as far too many closed fists were being thrown. Not only was the referee slowing the match down, but Ole and Slater took turns playing up to the crowd and stalling as the match went on. The fans were starting to grow restless when Bob Orton Jr. had seen enough. He hopped up on the ring apron and clocked Ole from behind with his cast. In clear view of the referee. Needless to say, this match was over. Ole Anderson defeated Dick Slater by disqualification in 0:09:30. Rating: 1/2*Within seconds the Horsemen had entered the ring and a four-on-two brawl erupted. To the surprise of no one, the Horsemen were getting the advantage when the Fabulous Freebirds (sans Terry Gordy) and Kerry Von Erich hit the ring! The Horsemen quickly took a powder as they saw the numbers were not to their advantage. The Cowboys, though, always up for a fight, starting throwing fists at Iceman King Parsons and Kerry Von Erich. It was a dumb move as the Cowboys were cleared from the ring in quick order. They started to make their way back up the aisle but walked right into the Horsemen! Another four-on-two brawl erupted which sent several members of security to break it up. AT THE DESK:What a crazy way to end the show! Jesse Ventura thought Tommy Rich, Greg Valentine, Ole Anderson, and especially, Ric Flair showed great courage battling it out when the numbers were against them. Solie reminded Ventura that they only stuck around to fight when they had the number advantage. Solie couldn't wait for the Clash of the Champions when it would be four-on-four. Ventura was more looking forward to when it came down to four-on-one against Kerry Von Erich. He thought maybe the Horsemen could rid the NWF of the annoyance known as Kerry Von Erich. We are only a week away from the Clash, but we have one more episode of Worldwide before we get there! Be sure to tune in next week! Well that certainly puts a wrinkle in things. I can't see Hogan kicking Hennig off the team, but I can very much see Savage neglecting to be a part of it. This got very interesting in a hurry.
Who on earth thought it was nice to see Steve King back? Good win for Roberts, who rarely competes singles.
Sounds good right now, but I still don't see the Freebirds as a team Von Erich can trust. Might not happen at the Clash, but I see a turn coming soon.
Even with Hercules being distracted, that was a great showing for the Hart Brothers. You seem to have a knack for taking these seemingly unassuming teams and making them appear like legitimate contenders. I know it's been said before, but really, I think you may have something more long-term with the Harts here. And it looks like with Race and Fernandez getting involved, we might have another Survivor Series match signed.
Yup, but no clue who Race's 4th will be.
I want George Steele to groom me. Where do I sign up? I love faux-brave Cornette. That match is going to be a lot of fun.
I have a sneaking suspicion that Borne isn't going to be so quick to forgive Lawler. Either way, this is a very interesting turn of events.
Haha. Poor Orndorff. The angle was a bit silly, but in that 1985 way that works. I also liked how you made mention that not everyone was taking it extremely serious with the players laughing and half the crowd really having no idea what was going on. Realistic for this type of crossover angle.
About what you'd expect from the actual match with Ole and Slater, but the post-match stuff was fun. I like the Cowboys fighting with the Freebirds/Von Erich as well. Sure, stupid move as they were trying to fight off essentially 8 men by themselves, but still, fits their personality.
Now, let's see if I can actually get some work done on the MSG show tonight.

I can't argue with Savage's decision. Hogan has a major fire to put out before Survivor Series. If Savage still shows up I'm betting he goes into business for himself.
Buddy Roberts ruins the BIG RETURN of Steve King! Glad to see him back to his poor match-having ways.
Good promo to solidify the alliance of Von Erich and the Freebirds. Some people think the Freebirds will stab Von Erich in the back, but I don't think so. The Freebirds need Von Erich at this point if they expect to compete with the Horsemen.
Had me believing the Harts would pull off the upset. Fernandez is a great hand to have around and his chicken schtick is getting over. Race better find a very, very powerful fourth member to compete against the Dream Team and Manny.
Awesome insert promo from Cornette. It likely took the entire duration of the Road Warriors match. If Cornette Survives, god help us all.
Not liking this Lawler. He better put his chin up and get back on track. Bourne asked for it!
Those baseball players are terrible workers! Out there laughing! Such a good skit though. And Hogan throwing one high and tight is better than having it bounce in the dirt.
A wild brawl to close the show. Piper left the Cowboys with an impossible mountain to climb.

September 15, Faces faking injury to get one over the heels work every time. Every single time. Just don't overuse it Ah, a featured match already at spot # 2. This was a nice nod towards the way the Freebirds' way have changed as of late. Warriors needed the win though. Steele and Ventura's skit is just the thing that would have happened back then. Brought a smile to me as well, even though I feel slightly that Ventura should be kept somewhat serious a little while longer. He just had a world title match. And we have JJ! Horsemen and Hogan will be your money ticket when Orndorrf/Hogan has run its course. Hogan may be the champ, but he's not very clever. Hennig and Savage on the same team will only leave to their downfall at Survivor Series. September 22 Macho Madness, all right. Maybe there never will be a problem at Survivor Series, for this problem will solve itself beforehand. Oh, right, this is wrestling. Looks like Freebirds and von Erich are on board with each other. The chicken gimmick of Fernandez must be the most interesting thing that has happened to him in this universe. So I guess Race will be teaming up with the Hart Brothers for Survivor Series then? I am not sure what's going on with Lawler. Intrigued though. Not an expert on baseball, but this must have been a big moment for NWF. Not sure it helped Orndorrf all that much, being pushed around by baseball players, but it probably helped his mainstream recognition. What is the Cowboys thinking? Don't they recognize allies when they see them? Surely fits their gimmick though, and a suitable, chaotic end to the show.
