Josh Liller's Alternate History Scenario (MODIFIED/updated BY SCOTT BREON)
What if WWF had not gobbled up and drove out of business nearly ever territory over the years?
Not a pure retro fed per se, but sort of an alternate history one. Do a "universe" with several circuits, circa 2000...
WWWF
Still ran by Vince McMahon Jr, who is bitter and hates everyone for his failed dreams in the 1980s of going national. As it is, he is THE wrestling mogul of the northeast including eastern Canada. Sports entertainment oriented, much like the real life WWF/WWE.
USWA
The old Memphis territory, still around with Lawler pretty much running things. More old-school wrestling. Runs shows in Tennessee and the Ohio Valley area.
AWA
Struggling in the Chicago/Detroit/Minnesota area, but still around because Vince
never raided their major stars. Verne Gagne is retired, with Greg Gagne and Eric Bischoff now running things.
NWA
NWA as a territory alliance is pretty much dead after Ted Turner bought the strongest part, added the remnants of WCCW and UWF/Mid-South, and let the rest wither and die. Based out of Atlanta where Jim Ross and Jim Cornette run things while Ted Turner is still owner. Somewhere between USWA and WWWF in style, a mix of old style and sports entertainment. They run shows throughout the south, from DC through Texas.
PNW
Pacific Northwest Wrestling, which is based out of the Oregon-Washington-Idaho-Vancouver area. Weakest of all the territories due to lack of expose compared to the others.
EPW
Extreme Pro Wrestling, a hardcore fed which dominates California and Las Vegas. Akin to ECW, with a touch of XPW but with neither Paul Heyman (still just a manager) nor Rob Black (still just a porn king) in charge of it.
Calgary Stampede Wrestling
Still owned by Stu Hart and still going strong in the Canadian Prairie Provinces, as well as the Maritimes but is making little inroads in BC, Ontario, and Quebec) Lots of wrestlers are there including a young Jushin Liger (before he started using the Liger gimmick), as well as perennial wrestlers such as Gama Singh and various members of the Hart clan itself. The company did however almost go bankrupt due to a lot of workers leaving to compete in bigger promotions such as the NWA. However, professional wrestling fan, former NHL enforcer, and father of future pro wrestler Chris Jericho, Ted Irvine pitched in and donated $75, 000 to Stu Hart and became somewhat of a silent partner, thus keeping the company alive, which has paid off big time. Focus is more on old-school style wrestling.
SSA
Strong-Style America, a promotion based in Hawaii and owned by Professor Tanaka and Lou Thesz. Focuses on Japanese style puroresu akin to New Japan. A little like ROH is today but far less spotty. Has had wrestlers such as Osamu Kido, and Hiroshi Hase work for them in the past. None of their wrestlers work on exclusive contracts.
WWC
Promotion based out of Puerto Rico that was doing ECW style matches before there was an ECW. Owned by Puerto Rican legend, Carlos Colon, Sr, (set in the pre-Brody murder times).
It could make for some interesting stuff, especially considering some of the alternate placement of guys (AWA is home to a bunch of geriatrics like Hogan, Austin is DA MAN in NWA, etc). WWC had a bit of a strong-style element, but not nearly as much as SSA, as it focused more on the style that eventually became known as “hardcore” wrestling. Calgary still had guys like Gama Singh, and Makkah Singh(sp?)(a.k.a. Mike Shaw), and SSA had a cult following in Hawaii and some of the other surrounding islands.
