How's everyone? Same old story here, which is to say, busy, behind schedule, and only have the NWA shows ready. UWF and house shows in a couple of days, and in the meantime, welcome feedback!
August 1987, Week 4
1. WCW (TBS Sat Night) – 2 hr Tony and David open the show. Flanking them are UWF Commissioner Bob Roop and NWA President Jim Crockett. They note that the Bash tour was a huge success, and the six-man tournament was also a smash. Officials with both promotions believe that the key reason for these success stories has been the increased level of competition, with the UWF and NWA guys all in the mix together. The boards of both the UWF and NWA have thus spent most of the last week in a series of negotiations regarding Starrcade. They’re working on several issues, and next week, there will be a major announcement about Starrcade, once these last details get worked out. Crockett and Roop both believe that this year’s Starrcade will be a historic day in professional wrestling. In that spirit of cooperation, we have a HUGE main event today: Brad and Bob Armstrong will be challenging for the world tag team titles … OF THE UWF! Yes, for the first time in months, Jim Cornette and the Midnight Express will be appearing in an NWA ring! Tony explains that Cornette agreed to pay a fine for the attack on Jim Crockett that caused their expulsion, and Ron Garvin agreed to waive the requirement that Jim Cornette face him in a cage, since the Garvins’ recent trip to the UWF gave him a chance to get his hands on the controversial manager. Next, the camera goes to David, who’s interviewing younger Armstrong brother Steve, who says he’s been in Atlanta to negotiate his possible entry in the NWA (as one half of the hot new tag team The Southern Boys), but today, he’s just a fan, here to support his family in its quest for championship gold.
*BREAK*
The Freebirds are at the podium with Tony and David, wearing the six-man belts. Michael Hayes says they’re the pre-eminent trio in all of wrestling and talk about fielding upcoming challenges from Eddie Gilbert’s crew, Kevin Sullivan, The Outlaws and “Whoever else wants to take a walk down Badstreet, baby!” A six-man title defense follows, with The Freebirds defending against The Rockers and Buddy Landell. After some miscommunication, a planned double-team move has Gordy getting out of Landell’s grasp, causing Michaels to superkick Landell. Landell tumbles out of the ring, and as the Birds dominate the Rockers, Landell throws up his hands and walks out, leaving the Rockers easy prey for the Freebirds. Hayes ends up pinning Michaels after a piledriver.
*Break*
Squashes/promos include: Dusty Rhodes (talks about a shot at the six-man belts, as his team started with a disadvantage the night of the finals, having already wrestled with the Birds getting a bye; he is also wanting another NWA tag shot against the Road Warriors, which brings out Paul Jones, who says the Powers of Pain are still chasing those belts, challenges between Jones and Rhodes ensue), Ron Garvin (didn’t appreciate Flair interrupting him a couple of weeks back, and wants to challenge Flair once more), Nikita Koloff (is not crazy about battling his friends the Road Warriors again, and despite Dusty’s plans, is gearing up primarily for his upcoming rematch with the man who took the US belt from him, Barry Windham), Arn Anderson (talks about his TV title gauntlet on the Main Event show), Stan Hansen (talks about the Outlaws putting EVERY title holder on notice), Rock & Roll Express (ready to reclaim their US tag belts from the Rockers, as well as challenging their old nemeses, The Midnight Express)
*BREAK*
Ric Flair promo: Flair talks about his “last of this generation” promo from several weeks back, noting that he has finally cleaned up pretty much every major star challenger of the past few years, over the course of this summer, as well as new challengers like Lex Luger and Sting. Flair says he’s also been privy to some of the “hush hush” negotiations for Starrcade, and “if the rumors I’m hearing are true” then he is gearing up for the biggest challenges of his career. Flair: “But that’s what being the world champion is all about, and Dusty Rhodes! Luger! Garvin brothers! Brad Armstrong! Every one, a top professional wrestler and one of the greatest athletes in the world … and every one a stepping stone for the Nature Boy, on his way into the history books as the greatest of ‘em all! WOOOOOOO!!!” Flair stays to provide commentary for the Tully Blanchard squash, talking up Tully as “the hungriest Horseman,” as he is the only one presently without championship gold.
*BREAK*
Jim Cornette and the Midnight Express approach the podium, with Cornette’s arms up in triumph. Cornette: “I’M BAAA-AAACK! Did you miss me, David? I didn’t miss you! I didn’t miss you because I saw you, with that stupid look on your face, as Sweet Stan kicked your googly-eyed idiot brother right in his soft midsection! And I saw that a lot, because in the past three months, I kept the tape of the Midnight Express obliterating Jim Crockett and played it back every time I was in a bad mood – because it never failed to cheer me up! And … well, Tony, I see you’re still getting dressed in the dark, but David Crockett, seeing as how Stan Lane’s savate kick to your brother left you speechless, it occurs to me that rather than a suspension, the Midnight Express and Jim Cornette should have received a humanitarian award for relieving the suffering of all those people in TV land who were spared the sound of your voice for a few minutes! “NOW THEN, today we have the Armstrongs, but for any of you idiots who haven’t been watching the UWF, the Midnight Express, the two-man highlight reel of professional wrestling, have been destroying some of the toughest teams in professional wrestling! And that’s why we have these (motions to the UWF tag belts around Stan and Bobby’s waists), the UWF world tag team championships! But it’s not enough! So my mother’s legal team negotiated our return to the NWA airwaves, because the top officials in wrestling have been working on putting together something for Starrcade, the November spectacular, something so awesome, someone so unprecedented, that it would make wrestling history! And you can’t have wrestling’s greatest event without wrestling’s greatest tag team, so here we are! And I know that Jim Crockett, Bob Roop, and everyone else in the top levels of the UWF and NWA want this kept quiet, but NOBODY tells Jim Cornette what to do or say – just ask your goofy-looking brother about THAT, David Crockett! So let me just say one thing – ROAD WARRIORS! The Midnight Express is putting you on notice! Last year, at Starrcade, you managed to take advantage of the Midnight Express slipping on a banana peel in a scaffold match – you won the match, and even tore up my knee, pretty good! Well, this year, let’s just say it’s going to be a different story, because the Midnight Express has replaced the weak link in that chain and when the smoke clears, and Starrcade is over, and the Midnight Express has deflated you two musclebound morons, there’s only going to be ONE world championship tag team … AND YOU’RE LOOKING AT THEM!” Cornette starts jabbering insults at a VERY perturbed looking Tony Schiavone and David Crockett, who says we’ll be right back, with our TV main event.
*BREAK*
We’re back, and it doesn’t sound as if Cornette has even stopped to draw a breath. But he notes the Armstrongs are in the ring, so he says, “AND NOW, ladies and gentlemen, I am proud to present to you, the greatest tag team in the history of professional wrestling, the two men who have put more more people out cold than NyQuil and warm milk combined, and the two men whose return FINALLY gives you people a chance to see, once again, pure-hearted Christian athletes, islands of virtue in a sea of savages … Beautiful Bobby and Sweet Stan, THE MIDNIGHT EXPRESS!”
TV Main event: The Midnight Express beat Brad & Bob Armstrong by countout, in 19:02 (commercial break midway thru)(***). It’s a back and forth bout, and Tony notes that Bullet Bob said he would forestall his return to semiretirement for a chance to be world champs with his son, but just as Bob gets the hot tag and is cleaning house on Lane and Eaton, he is distracted by KEVIN SULLIVAN AND BAM BAM BIGELOW, who have attacked Steve Armstrong! Sullivan pummels Steve bloody with brass knux, with Bigelow holding him, and they haul out of there as Bob and Brad scramble out of the ring after them! Steve is a bloody mess, the referee counts to 10 before awarding the match to Cornette’s team, and Tony says we’ll be right back …
*BREAK*
Schiavone says we’re almost out of time, but there’s a couple of minutes left, and Bob and Brad Armstrong have some words to say … Brad: “Kevin Sullivan, I tried to be your partner, and I even tried to be your friend, but you’re just a sick FREAK on some crazy vendetta! Well, brother, you talk about your ‘Brotherhood,’ but the Armstrongs are a REAL family, and you’ve just made the biggest mistake of your life! This whole thing has got to come to an end, once and for all!”
Bob: “Let me tell you something, Sullivan! You may think you’re the devil incarnate, but when the Armstrongs are through with you, you will truly feel like you’ve been to hell and back! We are gonna … I’m sorry, Tony, we’ll have to finish this another time.”
The Armstrongs run off to accompany the stretcher that’s taking Steve out of the studio, and Tony says we’ll hope to have an update on Steve Armstrong’s condition next week, but that’s all the time we have for today …
2. NWA Main Event (Synd) – 1 hr
Bob Caudle welcomes viewers to another exciting edition of Main Event, where today, we’ll see Arn Anderson defend his TV championship against a third challenger in his four-match gauntlet (which started August week 2)! We’ll also see a battle of pure power, as The Warlord faces Lex Luger, and, time permitting, The Rock & Roll Express will be in action against two of the UWF’s top stars!. Before we begin, Caudle has a special interview with LEX LUGER! Luger says he’ll face the Warlord anytime, anywhere, but he’s ready to settle things with “Nature Boy” Ric Flair! Luger: “So champ, I know you’re here, and I know you can hear me! Remember, I used to travel with the Horsemen, and I know from experience that a live feed of every show is made available to their dressing room, per their contracts! So face me! It’s time for you to step up and face me, one on one, no ringside interference! You hear me? I want YOU, Nature Boy! Title or no title, it’s time for this conflagration to come to a head!” Caudle says we’ll start out with our TV title bout, which is NEXT!
*BREAK*
TV TITLE: Arn Anderson defends against Kevin Sullivan! Before the bout, Arn takes the mic and says, “I have a message for Lex Luger! I just spoke with the Nature Boy, and he asked me to tell you that he’s meeting with Paul Jones right now, to buy the Warlord’s contract for your match tonight! So, Lex Luger, you have a date with destiny!” The bout is a short, brutal brawl, ending in a double DQ in 5:43, when Bob & Brad Armstrong run in and attack Sullivan! Arn goes after Brad, who decks him, and Arn rolls out of the ring. Bigelow runs in, and the Armstrongs are getting the better of them, when a hooded man runs out of the crowd and joins Sullivan and Bigelow in attacking the Armstrongs … it’s BAD NEWS ALLEN! Bob Caudle explains to viewers that Allen is a former judo champion and Olympian who has become one of wrestling’s toughest warriors and a known mercenary, and Sullivan apparently is his newest employer! Arn Anderson comes back in, to make it four-on-two, but out for the save come Lex Luger and the Rock & Roll Express! It’s mayhem now, as Horsemen Ric Flair and Barry Windham join the melee. Luger and Flair end up outside the ring, and Flair runs Luger’s head into the corner post! Flair and Windham get Arn out of there, and Sullivan’s crew also breaks off, leaving the Armstrongs, Express and a bloody Lex Luger in their wake. Caudle wonders what will happen with Luger, as his match is supposed to be next, following this …
*BREAK*
Lex Luger, bloody head hastily wrapped, is coming back to the ring! JJ Dillon is in the ring, and he has the mic! Dillon: “Mr. Luger, I commend you on your tenacity -- you appear to be determined to face the Nature Boy! Well, here he is!” And sure enough, here comes … “Nature Boy” Buddy Landell! Dillon slides out of the ring, as Luger is angry about the subterfuge and demands Flair. Landell takes the mic and says, “Hey, boy! I don’t blame you for being afraid – Ric Flair would probably beat you, but the real Nature Boy, Buddy Landell, is likely to break you in half! There’s no shame in forfeiting to Buddy Landell; you’re just saving yourself some pain – don’t eyeball me, boy! I’ll slap that tan right off you!” Luger charges in and levels Landell with clotheslines and power moves. A press slam caused Landell to land near the ropes and roll out of the ring. As he shakily makes his way to his feet, he starts yelling, “You ain’t learned your lesson YET? You want some more, boy? YOU WANT SOME MORE?” Landell re-enters and after gaining the advantage via eye gouge, targets Luger’s head, ripping off the bandage and punching, slamming Luger’s head into the turnbuckle and even resorting to headbutts (which seem to hurt Landell, as well) and a bulldog headlock! Ultimately, Landell misses a charge into the corner, and Luger takes over on offense briefly, before picking Landell up for the torture rack, but as he does, one of Landell’s legs inadvertently clips the referee. Landell desperately rakes Luger’s eyes while in Luger’s grasp and tumbles free. As Luger tries to shake it off, Landell tosses him through the ropes, follows him out and rams his head into the post AGAIN! Landell then rolls Luger back into the ring, just as the ref is reviving. Landell gives Luger a piledriver, a corkscrew elbow drop and 1 … 2 … 3! The winner, via pinfall, in 8:43, “Nature Boy” Buddy Landell! Landell motions with his hands in front of his waist, saying, “That’s right, baby – Here’s your uncrowned champion, right here!”, as he walks to the back.
*BREAK*
Rock & Roll Express beat Thunderfeet in 3:43, when Gibson pinned Thunderfoot #2 after a double dropkick (* ¼). Thunderfoot 1 and 2 are replacing the Express’ originally scheduled opponents, Buddy Landell and Eddie Gilbert. There’s just enough time for the pinfall and the Express to quickly roll out of the ring, go to Caudle at ringside and say, “Rockers! We want you! We want our belts back! So come on, boys, and let’s rock and roll!” Credits rolling, Caudle says we’ll see you next week, fans!

Would've liked to see Luger be able to overcome his injury to beat Landell. Would've really built him up as a unstoppable force.
Like the intensity in the feud between Armstrongs and Sullivan/Bam Bam. Cant wait to see them do battle.
Looking forward to see what the surprise is about Starrcade. Merger perhaps?

You know, I knew back when the big Luger angle happened that the Landell thing was coming, and when I read your original Luger post, I had half a mind to send you a pre-emptive apology, because I knew disappointment was coming. However, I can only say, I think you'll still get a kick out of some of the things coming down the pike. Surprises are in store.

Sorry for the delay -- here's the rest of August week 4 -- next week, we'll have ratings!
3. UWF (TBS Sun night) – 1 hr Jim Ross welcomes us to the show and says we have some exciting action, including a double main event! One main event that pits, for the first time ANYWHERE, two longtime friends and Tag partners against one another – Terry Taylor versus Hacksaw Duggan! The other is a TV title defense by a young man who has proven himself one of the most durable athletes in the UWF, as Owen Hart defends against Dick Murdoch! However, first, we have short video clips to briefly recap the Funk-Doc title swap, and Ross notes that even the Outlaws’ most clever scheme yet could only get the belt off of Williams for 24 hours. UWF board members are working to sign a final title showdown between the two, next week, on Power Pro! Also next week, UWF Commissioner Bob Roop promises a MAJOR announcement about Starrcade and the UWF’s role in it!
*BREAK*
Ted DiBiase pinned Sam Houston with the figure-four leglock, in 8:12 (** ¾). Steve Williams guests on play by play, saying that the personal betrayal of his longtime friend Ted DiBiase still stings, but he’s not known as the toughest man in wrestling for nothing, and he’ll fight through it, as he gears up for a series of defenses against the members of the Outlaws.
*BREAK*
TV Main event: Terry Taylor pinned Hacksaw Duggan after a Fivearm, in 11:01 (***). Duggan totally dominates the early goings, as Ross notes that Duggan is a smarter wrestler than his brawling reputation might lead one to believe, and he clearly is using his time teaming with Terry to anticipate his moves. Sting (finally off crutches) accompanies Duggan to the ring, and cheers him on from ringside. Of course, Gilbert ends up harassing Sting, grabbing a chair and threatening Sting’s knee with it. When Duggan reaches through the ropes, he grabs the chair from Gilbert and tosses it aside, but Taylor has pulled a chain from his trunks and wrapped it around his forearm. Duggan turns back to Taylor just in time to catch the chain-wrapped Fivearm, and although Taylor sells the move as also hurting his arm, he still covers Duggan for the three. After, he starts putting the boots to Duggan, and Gilbert joins in. Sting hobbles in, but Gilbert dropkicks Sting’s knee, and Sting goes down. Iceman Parsons runs in, and the 3-on-2 continues for several seconds, until Brickhouse Brown, Owen Hart and Rick Steiner run into the ring and clean house!
*BREAK*
UWF TV title: Owen Hart beat Dick Murdoch in 8:41, by countout. (*** ½). Owen carries the opening minutes, outwrestling Murdoch, who grows increasingly frustrated. An eye gouge gives Murdoch the advantage, and he works over Owen with brawling, chokes and other illegal tactics. The finish comes when Murdoch whips Owen into the ropes and Owen comes off with a cross-bodypress, but Murdoch falls back against the ropes, and the pair tumble out of the ring. Out on the concrete, Murdoch recovers first and grabs Owen, sets up for a possible brainbuster on the concrete (as Ross screams that this was the move that once injured DiBiase and drove Butch Reed out of the UWF). However, Owen blocks it and delivers a vertical suplex to Murdoch. Owen rolls into the ring, but Murdoch is too stunned to make it back in before the 10.
*BREAK*
Non-title: The Midnight Express beat Chris Adams and Brickhouse Brown in 7:22, when Eaton pinned Adams after a double goozle. (*** ½) We have just enough time left to show a music video of clips from recent Doctor Death-Terry Funk bouts, with a reminder that next week’s Power Pro features the final showdown between the two. The video continues, as the closing credits roll.
4. Power Pro (UWF) (syndication) – 1 hr Jim Ross and Magnum TA welcome viewers, and announce a big six-man tag main event. Speaking of 6-man tags, Ross says The Freebirds have been going strong, defending the 6-man titles against the top teams in ALL of wrestling, and they’ll be here next week, to take on their current rivals, The Outlaws. The Freebirds had a few words to say, and we go to a video promo, where Michael Hayes talks about how he and his “brothers” had DiBiase pegged as a weasel from their first battles with him in Georgia, back in 1981. Gordy butts in and says, “And Stan Hansen, I’ll be lookin’ for you, BOY!” Hayes reminds us that Hansen and Gordy had been friends and occasional tag partners, but now, Hansen is just another sap in a cowboy hat, and he’s got some hard times coming, courtesy of the Freebirds. The Outlaws ALSO had some comments, and we’ll go to them now. DiBiase reminds us that he is the cleverest plotter and manipulator in wrestling, and next week’s match is another example of why, because the Freebirds were SO eager to get their hands on the Outlaws (Terry Funk interjects, “As if THAT would get them anything but another beating!”) that they signed to defend their six-man belts against “The Outlaws,” without DiBiase (who has power of attorney for the group’s bouts) having to specify which Outlaws will be in the match. DiBiase: “In other words, The Outlaws will be spending the next week getting ready for the three of you, but you don’t know WHO to prepare for! Should you train for the scientific mastery of Ted DiBiase? Or the awesome power of Stan Hansen? Or the crazed brawling of Dick Murdoch? Or the vast experience of The Funks? Only WE know which three Outlaws you’ll be dealing with!” Back at the desk, Magnum TA reminds Jim Ross and viewers that the ‘Birds have every reason to want a piece of the Outlaws, with the latter group’s repeated attacks and interference against the Freebirds. But that’s next week. As for today, our six-man tag main event is next …
*BREAK*
Brickhouse Brown/Owen Hart/Rick Steiner beat Eddie Gilbert/Terry Taylor/Iceman Parsons in 40:42, when Owen made Iceman submit to the sharpshooter (****). This match takes up the rest of the show, with three commercial breaks in between. Key points hyped in commentary are that Gilbert’s stable seems to be disintegrating (as Parsons is starting to squabble with Gilbert and Taylor) and that Taylor seems particularly irked at Owen Hart, who perhaps represents what Terry Taylor used to be (fiery, athletic babyface who has been a staunch TV champion).
HOUSE SHOW HIGHLIGHTS “A” show
Lex Luger and Wahoo McDaniel battled to a 20-minute time-limit draw with The Powers of Pain.(*)
Eddie Gilbert pinned Rick Steiner after a Hotshot, in 6:18 (** ¾).
US Tag: The Rockers beat Hector & Mando Guerrero in 12:41, when Marty pinned Mando after a Rocker-Dropper (****).
6-Man titles: Freebirds beat The Funks & Dick Murdoch when Buddy Roberts pinned Dick Murdoch after a piledriver, in 15:55 (**).
NWA Tag: Road Warriors beat Arn Anderson/Tully Blanchard in 11:54, when Hawk pinned Blanchard after a gutwrench suplex (** ¾).
NWA world title: Ric Flair beat Owen Hart with a ropes-assisted reverse cradle, in 37:55 (**** ¾).
Barbed wire tornado tag: Bob, Brad & Steve Armstrong beat Kevin Sullivan/Bam Bam Bigelow/Bad News Allen in 12:02, when Brad pinned Sullivan after a powerslam (***).
“B” show
Big Bubba Rogers beat Hacksaw Duggan by DQ, in 19:56 (** ¼).
US title: Nikita Koloff & Barry Windham battled to a double countout in 10:49 (** ¼).
Four corners tag challenge: Outlaws (Hansen & DiBiase) beat The Sheepherders, Rock & Roll Express & Garvin Brothers, in 38:19 (** ¾). • Gibson beat Miller after flying cross bodypress in 6:21; • Morton pinned Jimmy Garvin with a victory roll, in 37:53; • Hansen pinned Morton with a Lariat, in 38:19.
UWF Title: Steve Williams pinned Terry Taylor after the Oklahoma Stampede, in 12:29 (** ¼).

Here are the NWA shows for Sept 1987, week one; UWF shows and house show highlights coming soon ...
**************************************************************************
Sept. 1987, Week 1 1. WCW (TBS Sat Night) – 2 hr
We open with a shot of an oblong table in a boardroom. Seated at the head are UWF Commissioner Bob Roop and NWA President Jim Crockett. On one side of the table are Steve Williams, Owen Hart and Paul Ellering. On the other side are Ric Flair, Jim Cornette and Arn Anderson. The two sets of world, world tag and world TV belts are atop the table. Crockett: “We’re here today to announce an event that will forever change the face of professional wrestling.” CUT to the opening title sequence, then to Tony and David at the desk. Tony says this is an historic day in professional wrestling, and that we’ll see the Starrcade press conference in its entirety, later in the show. But today, we have a main event that proves the NWA is the major league of professional wrestling, as right here on TV you’ll see a world title match that could headline anywhere, even on such a major event as Starrcade – today, Ric Flair defends the NWA world championship against perennial top contender Ronnie Garvin. Garvin’s at the podium, and he says this is his last shot at Flair’s title, per the contract (the same “last chance” deal Flair gave Dusty a few weeks back), but “Flair, I’ve seen you at your best and worst, and I’ve got your number! Before today’s over, you’ll be an EX-champion!” We’ll also have a tag match with some significant ramifications, and other exciting happenings that we’ll tell you about, throughout the show. But right now, let’s go to the ring …
Buddy Landell pinned Brickhouse Brown with the figure-four leglock in 12:03. Match commentary focuses on Landell’s shocking upset win over Luger on last week’s Main Event, plus the fact that Landell and Brown have been waging an on-again, off-again feud for more than three years. Finish has Landell flattening Brown with a foreign object, then sadistically applying the figure-four to a helpless foe.
*BREAK*
Landell is at the podium, where Tony offers reluctant congratulations both for this win and his victory over Lex Luger. Landell: “Well, you know, not to toot my own horn, but TOOT TOOT! Hey, Tony Schiavone, don’t act so surprised! After all, the Nature Boy, the REAL Nature Boy, is a finely conditioned athlete! You know Lex Luger wishes he had the physique of the Nature Boy, you know the whole wrestling world wishes it had the natural talent and charisma of Nature Boy Buddy Landell! Well, listen up! Last week, I took care of Lex Luger for JJ Dillon and the Horsemen, but by my calculations, beating the No. 1 contender makes ME the No. 1 contender! So, Ric Flair, you shine that belt up real pretty, because the REAL Nature Boy is comin’ for ya, boy!”
*BREAK*
It’s time for the Starrcade press conference. Crockett starts, saying this year’s Starrcade will make history for a number of reasons. First, it will mark the FIRST pay per view for the stars of the NWA and UWF, so fans nationwide will get to see this unprecedented event in their homes, by calling their cable or satellite providers. Roop then says that brings us to what will make Starrcade ’87 so unprecedented: “The NWA and UWF represent the very best of pro wrestling, by keeping the tradition of excellence in the ring while staying on the cutting edge of new concepts of greatness. It was the UWF, then known as Mid-South Sports, that pioneered the concept of the super-spectacular, with record-breaking events in the Superdome of New Orleans. And the NWA took that concept to the next level by creating Starrcade in 1983, an event that was beamed into venues throughout the Eastern Seaboard. And now, it’s time for the next step. Crockett: “As of Starrcade ‘87, the NWA and the UWF will merge into one promotion – World Championship Wrestling. And we will crown a UNIFIED Television champion, UNIFIED world tag team champions, and a UNIFIED heavyweight champion of the world!” Roop explains that the champions have signed for Starrcade, but existing contracts are still valid; in the event that any of the folks seated at the table of champions loses his belt, the NEW champion will be plugged into the Starrcade match. Flair then says the NWA world title is the oldest, most prestigious belt in wrestling, but that he will be even prouder to be the one and only unified champion in all of wrestling. Doctor Death just says, “We’ll see,” as Cornette, Ellering, Owen and Arn glare at each other.
*BREAK*
NWA Tag Titles, No. 1 contenders’ match: The Super Powers beat Powers of Pain in 5:19, when Dusty pinned Warlord after a Bionic elbowdrop, in 5:19 (DUD). Post-match, Dusty dominates most of the promo, talking about being able to separate business from friendship (in discussing how he will go from allowing Ellering to negotiate the upcoming 6-man title bout to challenging the Warriors for the tag belts).
*BREAK*
Other squashes/promos include: A promo from a furious Ric Flair (mad at Garvin for continually sticking his nose in Flair’s business, and at Doc for daring to consider himself a world champion on the same level as Flair), Road Warriors (Hawk says Cornette and the Express must have a death wish to come back for more, after last year; Ellering says he has talked with Dusty Rhodes about reforming their six-man championship team, gearing up for the Freebirds and doubling up on the Warriors’ title belts once they’re done with the Freebirds); Jimmy Garvin (says he’ll have Ronnie’s back against Flair and Windham); The Armstrongs (they have a surprise for Sullivan and his ever-growing troupe of thugs); Rock & Roll Express (once more, with feeling, they want the Rockers).
TV main event: NWA world title: Ric Flair defeats Ron Garvin, via submission, with the figure-four leglock, in 16:55 Flair refuses to break the hold, SCREAMING, “WHO’S THE MAN NOW?!” The Horsemen hold off Jimmy Garvin and Nikita Koloff, but DOCTOR DEATH comes roaring into the ring and starts wailing on Flair. Flair releases the hold and turns to confront Doc, who shoots in with an amateur-style takedown and continues pounding him. Finally, the other babyfaces pull him off. With all the other heels and faces still embroiled in the melee at ringside, BUDDY LANDELL slides into the ring, drops his corkscrew elbow onto the still-prone Flair and covers him, counting the three with his own hand. Landell then raises his arms in victory, and starts heading for the podium, but Tony says we’re out of time and we’ll hope to have Landell’s comments next week.
2. NWA Main Event (Synd) – 1 hr
Bob Caudle welcomes fans to another exciting edition of NWA Main Event, and says we have a jam-packed show, so let’s go straight to the ring!
Arn Anderson is in the ring, and after getting intro’d, he takes the mic from the ring announcer. Arn says he’s the most fightin’-est TV champion ever, as evidenced by his four week run of giving new challengers a shot at the belt. ARN: “And when I get Owen Hart in the ring at Starrcade, I will be the ONLY TV champion! And I thought it was appropriate, since three weeks ago, Thunderfoot #1 opened this series and gave me (*chuckles*) one of the toughest matches of my life, that the fourth and final match of my open-challenge series should go to his (*chuckles some more*) awesome tag team partner, Thunderfoot #2! And remember, all you people out there watching the world TV champion, it has been YOUR pleasure!” Thunderfoot #2 comes into the ring, and Arn offers a handshake. Thunderfoot #2 asks the crowd if he should accept, and as Arn turns to shush the audience, Thunderfoot #2 kicks him in the gut! Arn doubles over, and Thunderfoot #2 grapevines his arm and delivers a Russian Footsweep! Thunderfoot #2 goes for the pin, and it’s 1 … 2 … 3! THUNDERFOOT #2 is the new TV champion of the NWA! But wait … he’s unmasking to reveal … BRAD ARMSTRONG! Brad Armstrong is the new world TV champion! Amrstrong is a bundle of enthusiasm, holding the belt high and celebrating his win in the ring. JJ Dillon complains to the ref, who claps his hands to signify the three count he just made, and Arn is still knocked loopy, as Caudle tells up we’ll be right back, with a historic announcement about Starrcade!
*BREAK*
Caudle intro’s a video segment of the Starrcade press conference, as see on this week’s TBS Saturday Night show. Coming out of the video, Caudle notes that the TV title bout now appears to be Owen Hart versus Brad Armstrong, and we’ll be sure to keep fans posted of any future title changes, in order to keep folks aware of the most current Starrcade lineup.
*BREAK*
Wahoo McDaniel pinned the Warlord after a Tomahawk chop, in 8:12 (** ½). Caudle notes that Wahoo’s retirement is imminent, and we’ll hope to have some news about the big chief’s plans within the next couple of weeks.
*BREAK*
TV Main event: Bam Bam Bigelow & Bad News Allen (w/ Kevin Sullivan) beat Ronnie & Jimmy Garvin by DQ, in 12:50. The early goings are mainly a showcase for Bad News, to acquaint NWA fans with his arsenal of martial-arts combat-style maneuvers. However, when the Garvins take over, Sullivan begins interfering from outside, always just outside the ref’s view. After Sullivan’s third intervention, a trip of Jimmy Garvin, Precious (Jimmy’s valet/wife) comes over and slaps Kevin, who then grabs her arm and begins threatening her. Sullivan’s team keeps the Garvins at bay just long enough for Sullivan to start throttling her, but after only a few seconds, Bob and Brad Armstrong run down and POUND Sullivan, freeing Precious! The heels run off, and the show ends with the babyfaces standing together in the ring.

Here are the UWF shows ...
3. UWF (TBS Sun night) – 1 hr Jim Ross welcomes fans to the show and says we have a MAJOR announcement that will forever affect the UWF. But before we go to Magnum TA, who is at the press conference, covering it for the UWF, Ross gives a quick rundown of today’s action-packed show, capped off by a unique tag-title showdown that pits two roughhouse teams against one another – The Midnight Express defending against The Sheepherders. But FIRST, we have TV champion Owen Hart, who is in our other main event – defending the TV title in a loser-leaves match against one of his most persistent foes, Iceman Parsons. Owen’s here for a ringside interview and says he will be proud to represent the UWF at Starrcade, and will be proud ton continue to represent all these great fans as the unified TV champ. Jim Ross starts to ask about Owen’s upcoming defenses, when Jim Cornette butts in. Cornette: “Owen Hart, I’m sure you have lots of fascinating things to say about how you’re gonna give 110 percent for all the fans, and you’re the people’s champion and all that namby-pamby nonsense, but it’s time now to hear from some real world champions!” Cornette grabs the mic and says, “Road Warriors, this is for you! You’ve been a thorn in the side of the Midnight Express since we first came to the NWA, but time and again, the Midnight Express has dogged your every step, as the only team you could never quite shake! And now” –” An angry Owen Hart snatches the mic in one hand and Cornette’s hand in the other, and says, “You know, they asked ME to come down here for this time, and I’ve had just about ENOUGH of your mouth –“ That’s all he says, as Bubba Rogers and the Midnight Express maul Owen Hart, ending when Lane holds his arms while Eaton clobbers him with a chair. Owen frees a hand and gets it up, but still goes down like he’s been shot. The Express and Bubba put the boots to him while Cornette howls that this is what’s in store for the Road Warriors, until Rick Steiner, Brickhouse Brown and Jim Duggan run out for the save. Jim Ross wonders whether Owen will be able to make his match and what will happen if he doesn’t.
*BREAK*
Stan Hansen pinned Chris Adams after a lariat, in 12:16 (** ½).
*BREAK*
LOSER LEAVES: UWF TV title: Owen Hart made Iceman Parsons (w/ Eddie Gilbert) submit to the sharpshooter in 10:00 (*** ¼). Owen comes to the ring bandaged and bloody and spends most of the bout on the defensive, but he keeps fighting through, and the finish comes when Gilbert trips Owen, just out of the ref’s view. The ref questions it, but decides not to take any chances, and ejects Gilbert. Parsons is irate and argues with the ref, but Owen comes from behind and rear suplexes Iceman practically out of his boots, leading to the sharpshooter finish.
*BREAK*
UWF Tag titles: The Midnight Express battle the Sheepherders to a double DQ, in 9:05 (** ½). The ref calls it when both Cornette and Johnny Ace (the Sheepherders flag bearer) jump onto the ring apron. But Cornette plops down when OWEN HART pulls him off the apron and slugs him, sending Cornette flying and Bubba Rogers after Owen. Owen leads Bubba on a brief chase, until Bubba collides with Ace, which brings the Sheepherders after Bubba. Both teams (and their seconds) end up fighting in and out of the ring, until the ref has no choice but to call it. The brawl continues as Ross says we’re unfortunately out of time …
4. Power Pro (UWF) (syndication) – 1 hr Magnum TA, outside a boardroom, welcomes fans to the show and says we’ll be throwing it to Jim Ross at ringside, momentarily. However, first, there’s a MAJOR piece of news about to be announced, behind this door … We then air the Starrcade press conference. Afterward, Magnum says we’ll have more Starrcade updates in the weeks to come, but now, let’s go to Jim Ross at ringside. Ross says we’ll have our first match, the first half of our double main event, after the …
*BREAK*
6-man titles: The Freebirds beat Ted DiBiase/Stan Hansen/Dick Murdoch in 17:51, when Buddy Roberts pinned Murdoch after a swinging neckbreaker, in 17:51 (*** ¼).
*BREAK*
TV Main event: Steve Williams pinned Terry Funk in 15:16, after a Doctor Bomb (****). Back and forth bout, as Jim Ross sells Terry as perhaps Doc’s toughest foe, even more than DiBiase, because it was his cunning mind that mentored DiBiase, and he and his brother form the foundation of the Outlaws. The antics begin when DiBiase and Dory Funk accompany Terry to ringside. With them in the ring, Doc is intro’d, and he gets part way down the aisle, before Jim Duggan and Michael Hayes jog down to accompany Doc. Soon enough, the other Outlaws come down to ringside, followed by Rick Steiner and Freebirds Gordy and Roberts, Eddie Gilbert and Terry Taylor, Owen Hart, Brickhouse Brown, and before you know it, we have an impromptu lumberjack match going on. In one of the key moments of the match, Doc kicks out of a piledriver, and when Terry goes for a second, Doc blocks it, grabs Terry’s legs and lifts, eventually getting Terry into power-bomb position. He bombs Terry, and covers him.
*BREAK*
Jim Ross is at ringside, with Doc, Duggan and the Freebirds, all congratulating Doc. Doc says, “Jim Ross, I’m sure I haven’t seen the last of the Outlaws, but I just wanna make one thing clear – Ric Flair, he’s my number-one priority, and after Starrcade, when I am the one and only unified world champion, I’ll take on those Four Horsemen, the Outlaws, and ANYONE ELSE! Anyone who wants to challenge my world title, bring it on!” Doc and his friends leave. Jim Ross says we’re just about out of time, but we have about two minutes, to play a video featuring a major star coming back to the UWF – former UWF North American champion Dick Slater! The video starts without obstruction, and then finishes as the credits roll …

OK, we're starting Sept 1987 Week 2, and here are the TBS shows (Sat Night and UWF). A day or two, and I'll have up the syndicated programs (Main Event and Power Pro).
Sept 1987, Week 2
NOTE: Every show from now until the end of November will have at least one segment or spot ad for Starrcade, continually plugging the unification aspect of the show.
1987 Week 1. WCW (TBS Sat Night) – 2 hr We open the show with JJ Dillon, Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard at the podium, with Tony and David. They plug today’s big TV main event, Flair and Blanchard versus Ronnie & Jimmy Garvin! Flair’s not here yet, but Dillon assures us that the Horsemen, as always, have strategized for this match and anticipate another big Horsemen win. Arn then talks about the injustice by which he lost the TV belt, and we get a video replay of the situation from last week’s “Main Event” show, with Arn talking during the tape about how he signed for a match with Thunderfoot #2, NOT Brad Armstrong, so he expects the NWA to return the belt to him, as he did not sign for the “match” in which he purportedly lost it. Tully throws in that he, too, will challenge Brad … if this unjust situation stands, of course. Tony says they’ve received word that the NWA has reviewed the situation and will be announcing a ruling during this very broadcast! Whoever the champion is, they’re in for a tough test today, as the challenger for the belt today is “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes! Arn cuts a brutal promo on Rhodes, talking about their years-long feud and says that he knows just how to go after Rhodes, so he can’t wait for the match … AFTER he gets his belt back.
*BREAK*
Squashes/promos include: The Southern Boys (making their NWA debut! Steve Armstrong and Tracy Smothers say they ultimately want to go for some gold, but first, they’re looking forward to proving themselves to all these great fans), The Freebirds (focusing on upcoming title challenges from Outlaws and Horsemen), Kevin Sullivan/Bad News (tag squash, Sullivan also challenges Brad Armstrong, or whoever the champ ends up being, for the TV title), Stan Hansen (says the Outlaws are coming in to take over, and the merged company should be “OCW,” for Outlaw Championship Wrestling, and they promise to make an example of someone, and soon), Nikita Koloff (gearing up to challenge the Warriors for the tag belts, and Windham for the US title that he feels is rightfully his).
*BREAK*
Schiavone says we were going to have the Horsemen-Garvins tag match next, but we’ve been notified that Ric Flair STILL has yet to arrive, so we’re going to deal with the TV title, and then have the tag match, or as much of it as time will allow. Brad Armstrong is at the podium, with the TV title belt. Jim Crockett is beside him, and Crockett says that after reviewing the situation on last week’s Main Event show, the NWA has ruled that BRAD ARMSTRONG is the world TV champion! This brings out Arn Anderson, who is IRATE! Arn yells that he had signed to defend against Thunderfoot #2, not Brad! Crockett starts to respond, but Brad grabs the mic and asks Arn, “Have you ever seen Thunderfoot #2 unmasked?” Arn says, “No, but what does THAT have to do –” Brad: “Then, can you prove I wasn’t Thunderfoot #2 all along?” Arn (getting angrier): “No, but --” Brad: “Well, the NWA couldn’t prove it either, so you’re looking at the new champion!” Anderson kicks the podium and storms off, saying Armstrong has NOT heard the last of him, or the Horsemen. Brad gives a brief promo about how the Horsemen should appreciate how he won the belt, since they’re kind of the pioneers of clever schemes … but today, Brad is focused on Dusty Rhodes. Brad talks about his father teaming with Dusty and wrestling against him, and he says Dusty is one of the biggest wrestling stars of all time, and he’s looking forward to a clean match, for a change.
Brad goes to the ring, and here comes Dusty! We’ll have this match, in its entirety, next!
*BREAK*
Brad Armstrong retained the TV title, pinning Dusty Rhodes with a small package in 10:40 (***). The bout starts out cleanly, although Dusty appears to become frustrated as Brad gets the better of a series of exchanges. Dusty takes over when Brad whips him into the ropes and goes for a dropkick, but Dusty hangs onto the ropes, and Brad hits only air. However, Brad keeps battling back, and the pair finally tumble out of the ring, mid-grapple. Steve Armstrong comes out to check on his brother, and Nikita comes out to check on Dusty. Nikita (whose squash was immediately prior to this bout) has his Russian chain around his shoulders. As Dusty gets up, (Steve has already helped Brad to his feet and checked to make sure he’s OK before backing off) he grabs Nikita’s chain and turns to Brad, but NIKITA GRABS THE CHAIN! He clearly doesn’t want his Super-partner to win like this, but Dusty swings his end of the chain, clocking Nikita, who falls back. For a second, Dusty looks at Nikita, then Brad, then Nikita, as if he’s deciding whether to go all out to win, or be loyal to his tag partner and friend. Finally, he shakes his head and turns toward Brad with the chain. He wraps his arm in chain and launches a clothesline at Brad, who’s leaning against the corner post. Brad moves, and Dusty’s chain-wrapped arm hits steel, and Dusty goes down in pain. Nikita comes over and takes the chain away, resisting the urge to clobber his (ex?) partner. Brad gets up first, and gets Dusty in the ring. Brad goes for the legsweep, but Dusty gets behind him and atomic drops Brad. Now, Dusty’s juking and jiving, in full “American Dream” mode, and after a flurry, Brad goes down. Dusty delivers the bionic elbow drop, BUT Dusty’s elbow is the one hurt from the chain business, and he registers such pain that he can’t go for the pin. Nikita, still at ringside, is exhorting Dusty to get up. Dusty does, but when he picks up Brad, Brad rolls him into an inside cradle, and gets a 1-2-3! Even though Brad has been coming on strong all year, Tony and David still push this as a MAJOR upset. An angry Dusty rolls out of the ring, and As Nikita offers to help him to the back, arms open, Dusty clotheslines him on the concrete! Dusty drops onto Nikita with a flurry of punches, until Brad Armstrong (followed by the other babyfaces on today’s show) break it up.
Tony says we have to go to a break, and we’ll hope to have order restored when we return …
*BREAK*
Dusty is at the podium, and he is MAD. David Crockett asks him why he snapped like that. Dusty: “YOU SHUT UP, DAVID CROCKETT! The American Dream will tell you what he WANTS to tell you! All you people out there, you look at the American Dream Dusty Rhodes, and you know you’re seeing the pre-eminent athlete in ALL of sports. I am the top attraction in the country, and The American Dream Dusty Rhodes is SICK AND TIRED of holding up lesser athletes! The American Dream Dusty Rhodes has been a nice guy, has been the man who fights on behalf of the people … but WHO is going to stand up for the American Dream Dusty Rhodes? NOBODY, BABY! Well, that’s OVER! It is time for Dusty Rhodes to return to the respect he once held, and the only way to do that is to take it back to basics! The American Dream Dusty Rhodes is going back to his roots, and –”
That’s as far as he gets, as Nikita Koloff comes flying over and tackles Dusty. The two are brawling and rolling around the studio floor, until the babyfaces come back to break it up. Tony and David are SHOCKED at what’s happened.
In the ring, Tully Blanchard & Arn Anderson are snickering at this turn of events, and when the dust clears, J.J. Dillon comes over and says he has received a call from Ric Flair. Dillon says Flair told him that he was stranded in Chicago, at the airport, where the airline has apparently lost one of his bags, the bag containing some items of ring attire and his travel itinerary. Flair is getting this straightened out, but the delay is forcing him to miss this show, which the announcers push as yet another HuGE deal, since the world champion NEVER misses a booking. In any event, the Garvins have agreed to let Tully substitute for Flair, and with that, the match gets underway. However, we only have about three minutes of back and forth action before Tony says (because of the delay in starting the match) we’re out of time …
3. UWF (TBS Sun night) – 1 hr This week’s show is pre-empted, due to baseball playoffs. We do get in a live plug for next week’s show. Jim Ross announces action in the ring, saying we’re seeing the opening moments of a world title bout, with Steve Williams defending against Brickhouse Brown, and we’ll have that bout next week, right here on the UWF!

Syndicated shows for sept 1987, week 2
2. NWA Main Event (Synd) – 1 hr
Bob Caudle welcomes viewers and says we’ll have some of the top stars of the NWA and UWF in our main event, in a bout that brings back one of the greatest feuds in wrestling history – The Midnight Express versus the Rock & Roll Express! The R&R goes for the UWF belts, right here on TV! But first, we have in action the Russian Nightmare, Nikita Koloff!
Nikita Koloff pinned The Warlord, after a Russian Sickle, in 3:22 (*). While calling the match, Bob Caudle says that the blowup between Dusty and Nikita not only shocked the wrestling world, but also could throw the tag-title situation into turmoil. Next week, we’re scheduled to have the official contract signing for the NWA world tag titles, right here on Main Event! However, Caudle is not sure if Dusty and Nikita are even speaking after what happened on TBS, much less ready to challenge one of the most dominant teams in wrestling, The Road Warriors. After the bout, Nikita comes to ringside, and Caudle asks him about Dusty. Nikita says, “Nikita Super partner, Dusty Rhodes, he have much, how you say, frustrated. Nikita have no chance in communicate with the Dusty Rhodes since fight at TBS studio. But it take more than one problem to tear apart the Super Powers, and Super Powers will face Road Warriors for world tag team championship, just as Nikita Koloff will win back US title from the Barry Windham, and then Super Powers will be back on top!”
*BREAK*
NWA TV title: Brad Armstrong beat Kevin Sullivan via pinfall, after a Russian Footsweep, in 8:13 (**). This is a pretty conclusive win, to let Brad put the Sullivan issue behind him as he refocuses on defending his TV title. Bad News tries to interfere by hopping onto the apron, but Brad has Kevin pinned in a reverse cradle, and when he kicks out, he launches Brad towards Bad News, and Brad forearm checks him back down to the floor before hitting Sullivan with the Russian Footsweep for the pin.
*BREAK*
TV Main Event: UWF tag titles: Midnight Express beat Rock & Roll Express when Eaton pinned Morton after a rocket launcher, in 5:48 (** ½). The finish comes when Morton has Eaton pinned with a sunset flip, but Cornette has the ref distracted. Lane runs over with a savate kick and nearly takes off Morton’s head with it. Eaton then climbs to the top, and Lane gives him the rocket-launcher boost, leading to the pin. Commentary during the match (aside from calling the action at hand) focuses on The Road Warriors and how, barring a world tag title change between now and Starrcade, we’ll be looking at a Midnights-Roadies rematch. Caudle notes that The Midnight Express have NEVER logged a victory over the Warriors, but also that the two teams have not competed in the ring since Lane replaced Dennis Condrey, six months ago.
*BREAK*
We have just a few minutes left, so Caudle says we’ll be starting next week a series of video profiles on the top stars of Starrcade, who will be uniting the titles of the NWA and the UWF. The UWF has sent us a music video featuring their champion, Steve “Dr. Death” Williams, so let’s take a look at this awesome athlete. Video plays as credits roll …
4. Power Pro (UWF) (syndication) – 1 hr
Jim Ross and Magnum TA welcomes fans to the show, and we kick things off with a video recap of the Starrcade/NWA-UWF unification situation. We then head to the ring, for a bout featuring the lead Outlaw …
Ted DiBiase pinned Tom Zenk after a waistlock suplex, in 5:28 (*** ¼). Post-match promo has DiBiase saying the Freebirds have been retaining their 6-man belts by flukes or scurrilous tactics, and they haven’t heard the last of the Outlaws. DiBiase: “The Outlaws are putting every title holder on notice – we want gold! I won the Crockett Cup, The Outlaws dominated the Great American Bash tour, and we will make Starrcade our event! Get ready, because Ted DiBiase and the Outlaws are coming!”
*BREAK*
Hacksaw Duggan pinned Eddie Gilbert with the Spear, in 6:49 (** ¾). After, Terry Taylor runs in, and they double on Duggan until Steiner makes the save. Duggan and Steiner clear the ring, and Duggan is yelling, “TAYLOR!”
*BREAK*
Freebirds Michael Hayes & Terry Gordy battled The Funk Brothers to a double DQ, in 11:02 (*** ½). Of course, the other Outlaws run in, as do Doctor Death, Duggan and Buddy Roberts. It’s a huge brawl, once again, but the key moment comes when Stan Hansen clocks Terry Gordy with his bullrope’s cowbell, busting Gordy open.
*BREAK*
Jim Ross is at ringside with The Freebirds, and Michael Hayes says the Birds are ready for all out war, a showdown with the Outlaws. Hayes: “And DiBiase, you get those ranch hands of your ready, because The Freebirds are coming to take you apart! Look at what you did to my brother! (points to Gordy, bloody and bandaged). Stan Hansen, I almost feel sorry for you, boy, because the last guy to draw blood on Bamm Bamm like that was the Angel of Death, and Bamm Bamm slapped him so hard, he landed in Canada! Or, let me put it into terms you understand, since you like to play Cowboys and watch westerns. When we get ahold of you, it’s gonna be the Good, the Bad and the Ugly – because The Freebirds are not just good – we’re the best (holds out six-man belt)! Because when it comes down to street fightin’, ain’t NOBODY as BAD as the Freebirds, and because when we’re done with you, you Outlaws are gonna be even UGLIER than you are now!” They walk off, but Buddy Roberts turns back and says, “And, Michael, they’re already UGLY!”
UWF TV title: Owen Hart and Buddy Landell battled to a double countout, in 12:28 (*** ¼). Landell comes to the ring wearing a red robe with silver studs spelling out “Nature Boy,” which looks suspiciously like one the robe Ric Flair wore when (among other occasions) he was photographed for winning the PWI Wrestler of the Year award in 1984. Magnum TA says he hopes to have some words with Owen Hart about now having to prepare for a different Starrcade opponent, but the match finish happens as the credits are about to roll, so we’re out of time …

From the Sept. 19, 1987 edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter ...
"All NWA/UWF programming is pre-empted for one week, as Mr. L. Glove, president of the newly merged promotion, is spending this week preparing his income tax return (his accountant declined to retain him after he tried to pay for last year's return with a check drawn from the same account that had previously "paid" the AWA's $100,000 battle royal prizes)."
Sorry, but putting together this return is taking WAY longer than I'd thought. We will definitely be back next week.

OK, we have our TBS shows, and in a day or two, I'll have up syndicated and house show results, but the TBS shows are big ones this week, so I thought I'd go ahead and get them up.
Sept 1987, Week 3 1. WCW (TBS Sat Night) – 2 hr
We open with video from a house show, where Buddy Landell comes to the ring wearing Ric Flair’s classic red robe!
Tony and David welcome fans to the show, and Tony says we have a LOT of action to get to, including a challenge from a FURIOUS world champion, but first, “The American Dream” has asked for some time, to make a special statement. As Dusty talks, we have an inset image (minus sound) of last week’s altercation with Dusty and Nikita. Dusty: “You know, Tony and David, The American Dream Dusty Rhodes has headlined wrestling spectaculars all over this world. I have been the world’s top sporting attraction for more than a decade, and by electrifying audiences all over the world, The American Dream Dusty Rhodes has made friends and fans everywhere he went!” Dusty pauses and then appears a little more serious. Dusty: “But sometimes, even the greatest athletes on Earth can hit a slump! It happened to Reggie Jackson, it happened to Larry Bird, and it’s happened to the American Dream Dusty Rhodes. But when it happened, I had a hard time processing it, and I might have lashed out at some of the people I was closest to. Well, The American Dream Dusty Rhodes has taken some time to do some soul searching, some time to get back to think – and what The American Dream realized was, it was time to get back to his ROOTS! And that means making things right with friends and fans, so first, The American Dream wants to apologize to all you fans out there, and I can promise you, from here on out, you’re ALL going to get the American Dream that you DESERVE! Now then, I want to call out here my Super Partner, Nikita Koloff!” Nikita walks out, and the two embrace. Dusty: “I reached out to my main man here, after what happened last week, and I promised him that, starting this week, he was ALSO going to get The American Dream he deserves, because he has stood by me since that horrible accident nearly cost The American Dream Dusty Rhodes his close friend, Magnum TA! And Nikita and myself have beat the best in the world. Well, today, The American Dream and his partner, (Dusty puts an arm around Nikita’s neck) the GREATEST partner The American Dream has EVER had, will sign to face the Road Warriors for the world tag team titles! And Warriors, you’re a great team, but The American Dream’s slump is coming to an end … and that’s a PROMISE!” Dusty walks off, and Tony says to Nikita that this is a huge week for him, because in addition to gearing up for the Warriors, Nikita also FINALLY has his shots at Barry Windham coming up, his long-awaited rematches for the US title. Nikita promises that he will balance his US and world tag duties and he will make both the fans and his super-partner Dusty Rhodes proud to stand by Nikita Koloff.
*BREAK*
In the ring, we have a Sheepherders squash, but it goes less than 45 seconds before the Four Horsemen storm the ring and demolish both the Sheeps and the opponents! The Horsemen then surround the podium, as a LIVID Ric Flair takes the mic. Flair: “TONY SCHIAVONE! LAST WEEK … the television viewing public was ROBBED of a rare treat, the chance to see the world heavyweight champion, right here on television. And why? So that a carbon copy, a ripoff artist extraordinaire, could try to make his reputation off the champ! Last week, I thought, we all thought, that an accidental mishap had caused one of my bags to go missing. But as the world saw at the outset of this program, it was no accident – Buddy Landell STOLE my property! Well, Buddy Landell wants to be called Nature Boy, but there’s only one! He wants to be a champion, but there’s only ONE! Well, the Sheepherders are considered one of the UWF’s most brutal teams, right?” Schiavone agrees. FLAIR: “Well, the HORSEMEN just showed them what BRUTAL is all about! I know Buddy Landell isn’t on the program today, so another UWF act got to be the example, instead! Let me make this plain – Buddy Landell, Freebirds, or Steve Williams himself – ANYONE in the UWF who wants to try on the world champion, wants to try on the Horsemen, COME ON DOWN! The Horsemen, on behalf of the NWA, are laying down the challenge, because we are SICK of having these wanna-be stars come on OUR show and claim to be the best! And Buddy Landell, I’m Ric Flair … WOOOOOOO! The ONLY Nature Boy, and I’m offering you the chance of a lifetime! You get a chance at THIS (holds up world belt), and all you have to do is return my property – my bag, MY ROBE! And if you can beat me for this belt, you can HAVE the robe! Hell, you can have EVERYTHING I own, because I won’t need it – because the ONLY way you’re beating Ric Flair is over my dead body! So COME ON DOWN, Buddy Landell, and let Ric Flair make you famous!” The Horsemen walk off, but Arn turns back, leans into the mic and says, “And Brad Armstrong, that TV title belt is coming back where it belongs!”
*BREAK*
Other squashes/promos include: Ted DiBiase/Funk Brothers (6-man squash; Ted talks about Starrcade coming up, and how the Outlaws are going to make their presence felt, and sooner than anyone suspects); Brad Armstrong (gearing up for a heavy battery of challenges, as everyone knows the TV champ is guaranteed a featured spot at Starrcade; Brad hopes Owen Hart is still champ of the UWF when title-unification time comes, because he knows he’ll get a clean scientific match the fans can be proud of); Stan Hansen (heavily bleeped interview in which he says he’s getting to hate that no-good Terry Gordy); Wahoo McDaniel/Lex Luger tag squash; Southern Boys (want their names in the hat for those US tag titles held by the Rockers); Midnight Express (Cornette can’t figure out why anyone cares about this stupid contract signing, as all the Super Powers and Warriors are fighting over is the right to get beat by the Midnight Express at Starrcade).
*BREAK*
It’s time for the big signing, and Dusty is sitting at a table in the ring with Paul Ellering and NWA President Jim Corckett, as The Road Warriors stand behind Ellering and Nikita stands behind Dusty. Crockett says as their manager, Ellering has power of attorney to sign on behalf of Hawk and Animal, while Nikita has empowered Dusty to sign for him, as English is still fairly new to Nikita, and this seemed like an easier plan than translating a copy of the contract into Russian. Ellering reviews the contract and signs it, saying all Dusty now needs to do is fill in the names of the challengers and sign, to make the contract official. Dusty scribbles, turns a page, scribbles again, and hands the document to Crockett. Ellering says Dusty has been an ally to the Warriors for some time, but that once the bell rings, it will be all business. Dusty and Ellering shake hands, and Ellering leaves with the Warriors. Jim Crockett says, “I just want to say how proud we are, on behalf of Crockett Promotions and the NWA, to present this bout, a real dream match between two of wrestling’s top teams. (Crockett is looking at the contract as he talks) We will soon be announcing venues for this match between the two great tag teams of The Road Warriors, and the team of Dusty Rhodes and …” Crockett stops and looks again at the contract. “… DICK MURDOCH?!” BOOM! Ted DiBiase, Stan Hansen, Dick Murdoch and The Funks hit ther ring and attack Nikita! Crockett turns towards them, and Dusty slaps him so hard he hits a flip! The Outlaws hold Nikita while Dusty takes off his boot, that steel-lined “orthopedic” boot, and hammers Nikita over the head with it, repeatedly. The Funks hold Nikita from behind, as Stan Hansen runs in and lariats him to the mat. Nikita goes down, and DiBiase slaps him in the figure four, while Rhodes and Murdoch drop a succession of elbows on him. The Road Warriors and Ellering run in to save Nikita, but the Funks have taken THE CHAIRS the guys were sitting in for the signing, and they waffle Hawk and Animal! The Outlaws, joined by Dusty, laugh as they leave the ring. David Crockett runs out with a mic, and asks Dusty, “HOW COULD YOU?!” Dusty grabs the mic and says, “David Crockett, you bext shut that mouth, because The American Dream might just give you what your brother just got! Let me tell you people something – I SAID I was going to challenge those two muscleheads with the best partner The American Dream Dusty Rhodes ever had, and HERE HE IS – Dick Murdoch! Dick Murdoch and Dusty Rhodes were the original Outlaws, as a tag team, and I SAID I was getting back to my roots! Here they are! The American Dream’s fellow Outlaws, from West Texas! And I am proud to be part of the greatest organization in the history of this sport – From now on, when you see the Outlaws, Dusty Rhodes is with them, EVERY STEP OF THE WAY!” Dusty throws down the mic, and the group storms out. Tony Schiavone says we’re almost out of time, but we have just enough time to tell you next week’s show will feature a world TV title bout, a special appearance by the UWF world champ, and we’ve just gotten word that Buddy Landell will be here to answer Ric Flair’s challenge.
3. UWF (TBS Sun night) – 1 hr
Jim Ross welcomes us to the show and says we have a world title bout on TV, plus a six-man battle and the return of one of the UWF’s biggest stars of the decade -- Dick Slater! Slater comes in and says he is back in the UWF and plans to establish himself by getting back into the championship picture. With Starrcade coming up and a unified WCW to follow, the titles will be even more prestigious than ever, and that has drawn Dick Slater back! But first, Slater says, he has a personal matter to tend to, and that’s all he has to say about that, for now. Slater walks off, and Jim Ross says that before we begin today’s bouts, a situation occurred on Satuday’s NWA broadcast that has major ramifications for the UWF – a development that would have been unthinkable, only a few weeks ago. With that, we go to a short video recap of the Dusty-Outlaws situation from the Sat. night show. We come back to Ross, who says we’ll have the Outlaws in action, NEXT! *BREAK*
Ted DiBiase/Stan Hansen/Dory Funk Jr. beat Chavo/Hector/Mando Guerrero in 11:15, when Hansen pinned Chavo after a lariat (*** ¾). Ross says we’re glad to welcome back Chavo, back from injury, and The Guerreros have targeted the Rockers for revenge. However, Ross also notes there are a number of teams looking for a piece of the US tag champs, and competition is fierce! When Chavo goes down, Ross speculates he might have returned too soon …
*BREAK*
A deeply offended Magnum TA is at ringside, with Ted DiBiase. Magnum says Dusty has not returned his calls and asks how Ted managed to lure his longtime friend, Dusty Rhodes, to the Outlaws, when the villainous group of bullies is everything that Dusty had always opposed. DiBiase laughs and says, “Magnum T.A., whether I, or the Funks, or anyone else ever liked Dusty Rhodes, there’s no denying the man is a WINNER! And when you look at The Outlaws, you see WINNERS!” Magnum notes that the “winners” don’t seem to have any championship gold, right now. DiBiase scowls and says that will soon change, starting with Dusty and Murdoch taking the NWA tag titles, and following with the Freebrids, who DiBiase says are running from the challenge of the Outlaws for those 6-man titles. Finally, DiBiase says that since the Outlaws are the #1 reason to watch the UWF TV program, it’s only right that an Outlaw should be TV champion, with the right to unify the TV titles at Starrcade. So DiBiase is challenging Owen Hart. Finally, Ted says, if Magnum is that worried about his “good friend” Dusty Rhodes, “The American Dream will be right here, next week, standing with the Outlaws!” DiBiase walks off, and Magnum throws it back to Ross, who says, “Let’s go to the ring!”
Dick Slater beat Eddie Gilbert in 6:59, when Gilbert went for a cradle with the tights pulled, but Slater reversed it, also pulling the tights. Ross reminds viewers that Slater is no stranger to breaking rules. Terry Taylor runs in, and they’re doubling on Slater until STING runs in for the save! Sting clotheslines both heels out of their boots, runs them off and offers a handshake to a dazed Slater. Sting rolls out of the ring and bellows, “I’M BAA-AACK!!!”
*BREAK*
Our world title bout is up! It’s Steve “Dr. Death” Williams defending against Brickhouse Brown! We go to ring intros, but mid-intro, here comes Buddy Landell! Landell, wearing Ric Flair’s red-and-silver robe, takes the mic. Landell: “I’m sorry to interrupt this prestigious event, but The Nature Boy, The REAL Nature Boy, has something to say! Anyone who’s watched NWA TV has seen Ric Flair screaming and crying about Buddy Landell, and so you know the lengths Buddy Landell has had to go to, to get Ric Flair’s attention! Now, everybody knows I’m the real Nature Boy, everybody knows I’ve had a hard time getting a world title match with Ric Flair, because he knows I’ll take his belt, and I might just cripple him if he makes me mad! Now, The Nature Boy’s here for one reason – to challenge the winner of this match for the UWF world title! See, when Buddy Landell wins BOTH world titles and unifies the belts before Starrcade even comes, it’s gonna make history! So Steve Williams, Outhouse—sorry, I mean Brickhouse Brown, whichever of you two muscleheads wins this match, you’re gonna have to deal with Buddy Landell – and DON’T make me have to embarrass you like I have Ric Flair! All I want is a fair match, and you’re looking at the next champ!” With that, Landell hands back the mic and offers Doc a handshake! Doc reluctantly shakes, but doesn’t immediately release, and for a few seconds, the discomfort is plain on Landell’s face, before Doc finally lets go of his hand. Landell then offers Brown a handshake, but when Brown (also initially reluctant) finally goes to shake, Buddy reaches in and slaps his face! Brickhouse CLOCKS Landell, who goes flying and ends up halfway upside down, his legs plopped against the ropes. Two more refs come down to get him out of the ring, and we’re underway!
UWF title: Steve Williams beat Brickhouse Brown by countout, in 10:31 (** ¼). Most of the match is back-and-forth, with Doc in control more frequently than Brown, but after both men collide while trying to deliver running clotheslines, Brickhouse falls out of the ring. As he tries tor ecover, Buddy Landell runs back out and runs Brickhouse’s head into the post! The ref, who was checking on Doc, misses this, but starts the count, as Landell hides beneath the ring. When he gets to 10 and calls for the bell, Landell jumps Brown and starts beating him down, even piledriving him on the concrete! When Doc realizes what’s happening, he runs out and slugs Landell, who runs off. Doc is tending to Brown as Ross says we’ll be right back.
*BREAK*
Rick Steiner and Terry Funk wrestle for about four minutes, until Ross says we’re out of time for this week …

Syndicated shows for Sept 1987, week 3 ...
2. NWA Main Event (Synd) – 1 hr
Bob Caudle welcomes fans to the show and with him are TV Champion Brad Armstrong and his challenger in today’s main event, ex-champ Arn Anderson. Caudle reminds both men that they have guaranteed no physical contact during this interview segment, and will face fines and forfeiture of title opportunities if they violate their promise to have a strictly verbal faceoff here. First, Bob asks, “Brad, you know that I and all the great NWA fans have had great respect for your work ethic and your willingness to play fair and play by the rules, but I have to ask – do you feel that you used trickery to win that belt?” Brad: “Well, thank you, Mr. Caudle, and I want to say it’s a pleasure to be here speaking to you and the fans –“ Arn cuts him off. “JUST ANSWER THE QUESTION!” Brad: “Fine, Arn Anderson, I will! While I’m not here to admit to anything, I will say that I have almost ALWAYS played by the rules in this great sport. And I would like nothing better than to wrestle each opponent straight up, win, lose or draw. But sometimes, a competitor runs into an opponent who ain’t interested in seeing who truly is the better man – they want to stack the deck, work the system, do anything they can to hold onto their main-event positions. And sometimes, it’s necessary to fight fire with fire, give them a taste of their own medicine.” Caudle: “ Well, OK, then. And Mr. Anderson, why do you believe tonight’s match will end differently than the bout a couple of weeks ago, when Brad Armstrong won the title?” Arn Anderson says, “Well, Bob Caudle, they say that battles are won or lost in the preparation. Last time, I lost because I prepared for one man and got another! This time, I have prepared like never before – I have studies Brad Armstrong’s matches, I know his strengths, I know his weaknesses! When we get in the ring, I will be able to anticipate his next move, almost before he thinks of it. And it hasn’t been just me – JJ’s been with me, taking notes. Tully Blanchard, one of the cleverest strategists in ALL of wrestling, shared some observations, and THE ONLY world heavyweight champion in wrestling, Ric Flair himself helped me prepare for this bout, based on what he’s seen and on what he’s had to deal with in matches with Brad Armstrong. So the bottom line is, Brad Armstrong – tonight, it’s not you against me; it’s you against the combined brainpower of the Four Horsemen!” With that, Bob says we have two other great bouts, plus a video that is sure to shock many fans, and we’ll be right back with our first match, right after the …
*BREAK*
Rock & Roll Express beat Powers of Pain in 4:00, when Morton pinned Warlord after a double dropkick (* 1/4). Caudle says a slate of US title rematches are being negotiatied between the Express and the Rockers.
*BREAK*
TV title: Brad Armstrong pinned Arn Anderson after a Russian Footsweep, in 16:42 (****). The early minutes of the bout have Arn in control, as he, indeed, seems to anticipate many of Brad’s signature moves. He ducks a dropkick, reverses a hiptoss and safely makes it to the ropes when Brad clamps on a hold. Finally, Brad holds up a hand for a test of strength, but when Arn slowly holds up a hand for it, Brad abruptly hits him with a standing dropkick (and yes, Brad in 1987 absolutely could throw such a standing dropkick). From there, Brad holds a slight edge, as it continues back and forth, (and out midmatch commercial break happens in here – when we return from commercial, Tully is at ringside, with Dillon), but when he goes for the legsweep finisher, Arn turns and clotheslines him before he can get a firm grip. Caudle notes that Arn’s preparation has paid off, but Arn spends a little too long pointing to his own temple to show how smart he is, and Brad catches him from behind and rolls him into a reverse cradle. Tully jumps onto the apron, opposite them, to complain to the ref about a “tights pull.” With the ref’s head turned, Arn himself grabs a handful of tights and reverses the cradle, but after a couple of seconds (the goal is to create doubt as to whether it would have been long enough for a three), Brad pushes off Arn, as the ref returns his attention to the match in the ring. Arn goes flying into Tully (Caudle: “Well, they were right about one thing – they DID put their heads together!”), and a dazed Arn is now easy prey for the footsweep, which leads to the pin. Armstrong leaves smiling, belt raised high! In the ring, Arn briefly glares at Tully, asking “WHAT WERE YOU –“, before collapsing his head into his hands. Tully and JJ help Arn up, and they leave, arm in arm, heads down.
*BREAK*
Tully Blanchard (looking, Bob Caudle mentions, much more chipper than just a few minutes earlier – Bob figures they must have had a quick meeting and strategy session) pinned Lex Luger after a slingshot suplex, in 14:17 (** ½).
*BREAK*
Bob Caudle says he never expected to see what happened on the NWA’s Saturday show. With that he plays a video recap of the Dusty-Outlaws angle.
4. Power Pro (UWF) (syndication) – 1 hr
Jim Ross welcomes fans to the show, and introduces his special guest commentator, lead Outlaw Ted DiBiase! Ross says the Outlaws have a major announcement, and our main event today should be a feud-settling title match between the Freebirds and the Midnight Express! To kick things off, we have a special grudge match, so let’s go to ringside.
Terry Taylor beat Hacksaw Duggan by DQ, when Duggan got caught with a foreign object introduced by Taylor, in 9:32 (** ¾). Sting is in Duggan’s corner, to counteract Eddie Gilbert in Taylor’s, and the four men brawl after the bout, with the faces, clearing the ring.
*BREAK*
Ross says the Outlaws have purchased some TV time, to make an announcement. He turns it over to DiBiase, who says the Outlaws have managed to become even more awesome, with the addition of yet another former world champ, Dusty Rhodes, to their ranks. DiBiase: “And people have asked, how could Dusty do it? How could Dusty turn on his friends and his fans? Well, even though I maintain that you people don’t DESERVE an explanation, Dusty Rhodes will be on UWF television NEXT WEEK, to answer that question and tell all of you EXACTLY where he stands. In the meantime, I want everyone to know that ALL negotiations for contracts involving Dusty Rhodes now go through ME, Ted DiBiase, and make no mistake – whether this league is called the UWF, WCW, or whatever else – the Outlaws WILL be running the show!” With that, Ross says, we go to the ring for our next bout …
Stan Hansen pinned Mando Guerrero after a lariat, in 6:50 (**). DiBiase stresses that Hansen is the powerhouse of the Outlaws, one of the most awesome destructive forces in wrestling, and that championship gold is in his near future.
*BREAK*
MAIN EVENT: UWF tag titles: Freebirds Michael Hayes & Buddy Roberts go to a double countout with The Midnight Express, in 6:26 (** ½). All four men are brawling at ringside, when Cornette comes over and drills Hayes with the racquet. Roberts, enraged, slugs Stan and charges Cornette, PILEDRIVING him onto the floor! Cornette lies there, quivering, when Big Bubba comes over. Bubba starts to go after Roberts, but then turns to tend to Cornette.
*BREAK*
Chavo Guerrero beat Dick Murdoch by DQ, in 7:12 (** ¼). Back and forth bout until The Rockers run in and DESTROY Chavo. Shawn takes the mic, after the carnage clears, and says he and Marty are TIRED of hearing how the Guerreros are going to get revenge on The Rockers, how the Rock & Roll Express are going to take back “their” belts, how even newcomer teams like the Southern Boys want a piece of the Rockers. So they are going to start making examples of people, until they get their due respect as the top team in the U.S., and they are holding an open-contract challenge at Starrcade; ANY team who wants to take a shot can do so, but should know that the Rockers will be looking to INCAPACITATE anyone who wants to try them on.
With that, Ross says we’re out of time …

Hello! TBS shows for Sept 1987, Week 4
Sept 1987, Week 4 1. WCW (TBS Sat Night) – 2 hr We open with a short video clip of Nikita Koloff giving Barry Windham the sickle, with a voice over of the ring announcer shouting, “THE WINNER … AND NEWWWWWW U.S. CHAMPION … NIKITA KOLOFF!”
Tony and David welcome fans to the show and say that, indeed, we have a new U.S. champion, plus a WHALE of a main event but first, here’s the new title-holder … NIKITA KOLOFF! Nikita says he is proud to represent his adopted country, the United States, with this championship once more. He also notes that some of his first title defenses will be honoring the last of Barry Windham’s title-defense contracts, including a few bouts against DUSTY RHODES! NIKITA: “And Dusty Rhodes … Nikita growing up in a Soviet-a Union, make few friends, but when Nikita come to America, he finally learn what friend is – here, Nikita stand with friends, fight for friends, and you, Dusty Rhodes, were Nikita closest of friends. I do not-a know, Dusty Rhodes, what make-a you change, but Nikita will still be friend to you … and give you lesson you truly, how you say, DESERVE!” David Crockett says that Dusty’s not scheduled to be on the show today, but he hopes “The Dream” is listening closely to Nikita. Crockett: “Dusty Rhodes … look out.” Tony says we have an incredible main event today, a WORLD title bout, so don’t you DARE go away! Our “We’ll be right back” graphic going into the break lays out our main event, a world title match between Ric Flair and Buddy Landell.
*BREAK*
Squashes/promos include: The Road Warriors (Hawk says Dusty Rhodes has shown his true colors, but that when the Warriors get thru with him and Murdoch, the only color they’ll be showing is blood-red); Four Horsemen (All four talk after a Tully/Arn squash; A giggly David Crockett says the Horsemen seem to be losing steam, as only a few weeks back, they were ALL champs, and now, only Flair has the gold; Flair reminds Crockett that theirs is the most formidable group of wrestlers on Earth, and it’s only a matter of time until they’re back on top; Flair also notes that he got all his stuff back, by agreeing to give Landell a title bout; Flair adds, “But Buddy Landell, I’m not just giving you a match … I’m also going to give you the WRESTLING LESSON OF YOUR LIFE! You, my friend, are going to learn today that there’s a BIG difference between the innovator and the imitator! WOOOO! BUDDY LANDELL, TODAY, THE ONE, the only NATURE BOY is taking you to school!”); Hacksaw Duggan (Wants to say howdy to all the nice folks in NWA-land, and he’s looking to get his hands on Terry Taylor, a worm he once thought of as a friend); Brickhouse Brown and Owen Hart (tag squash; both men say they look forward to representing the legacy of the UWF in the new WCW; Brickhouse adds that he has a BIG score to settle with Landell, who cost him his world title match last week); Lex Luger (no promo); Rock & Roll Express (they respect the Southern Boys and Guerreros, but they want the Rockers, and they’ll get in the ring with whoever they need to, to earn that shot); Bam Bam Bigelow (he’s getting ready for some new challenges; Kevin Sullivan is conspicuous by his absence from Bigelow’s side).
*BREAK*
Nikita Koloff squash, gets interrupted by Dusty Rhodes (Tony screams: “HE’S NOT EVEN SUPPOSED TO BE HERE TODAY!”) running in on him. Dusty attacks him from behind and pounds him with elbows, but Nikita turns it around. However, his advantage is short-lived, as Dick Murdoch joins in to make it two on one. They have a bullrope, stretched out between them, intending to deliver a wicked, assisted clothesline, but IVAN KOLOFF runs in with the Russian chain and clocks them both! The Koloffs clean house, and as Dusty and Murdoch back away, Dusty is pointing at them and shouting, “NEXT WEEK, BABY! NEXT WEEK, YOU MEET THE WHOOOOOOOOOLE FAMILY, DADDY!”
*BREAK*
Starrcade Countdown clock graphic … leads to Tony announcing that next week, right here on this program, we’ll have the first of our weekly Starrcade News Center updates, each one focusing on one of the big matches at this year’s history-making Starrcade, which will mark both the birth of the new, combined WCW AND the company’s debut on PPV! We get a quick graphic with Tony discussing the matches we know so far: “Nature Boy” Ric Flair vs. Steve “Dr. Death” Williams for the unified WCW World title, The Road Warriors vs The Midnight Express for the unified world tag team titles, and Brad Armstrong vs. Owen Hart for the unified TV title! Tony reminds viewers that, of course, these matches could be subject to change, in the event that ANY of these titles change hands between now and Starrcade. The Contracts for the PPV are structured so that the title-holders, not necessarily the named individuals, will be the ones unifying the titles. Tony notes that The Rockers are also slated to defend the US tag titles at Starrcade, and we’ll hope to have more news on that, as well as other matches that are being negotiated as we speak, in the weeks to come.
*BREAK*
TV Main event: Ric Flair beat Buddy Landell by countout in 8:11 (** ¼). It’s a surprisingly even exchange, with Landell using many of Flair’s own moves on him, but at one point in the bout, Landell has him down, in a side headlock, when BRICKHOUSE BROWN struts to ringside, wearing Buddy Landell’s “Nature Boy” robe! Buddy doesn’t initially notice it, but JJ Dillon at ringside sees Brown, smiles and says, “HEY, LANDELL! YOU MIGHT WANT TO TURN AROUND AND TAKE A LOOK!” Landell sees Brown and, in shock, releases the headlock. Flair rolls to the apron and starts to pull himself up. Landell goes to the edge of the ring to shout and point at Brown, screaming, “TAKE THAT OFF!”. Brown grins, says, “OK, OK,” then removes the robe and TEARS IT TO SHREDS! He throws the tatters at Landell, who’s about to buse a blood vessel. From behind, Flair gives a running knee that knocks Landell to the floor, where, between recovering from his fall and his shock over the fate of his fancy robe, he is counted out!
*BREAK*
Tony says we have just a few minutes left, so let’s have a word with the world champion. FLAIR: “Tony, as you could see, when it was time to take care of business, Buddy Landell’s mind was elsewhere! You must keep your eyes on the prize, especially THE RICHEST PRIZE IN THE GAME (holds the belt forward). This is professional wrestling, the GREATEST sport in the world, and that makes me the greatest ATHLETE in the world! And NO MAN is going to beat me unless his mind is 100 % on the match … and let’s face it, no one’s been able to beat me even WHEN I have their full attention! That’s because I have THIS (holds up belt again), which says I am the greatest wrestler on the face of God’s green earth! NOT some senior citizen wrestling in front of 200 people on ESPN, NOT some spray-tanned cartoon with muscles that make him look like a balloon animal, and NOT … Steve … ‘Dr. Death’ … Williams. Steve Williams, you may think that UWF title makes you the man, but to BE the man, you have to BEAT the man, and RIC FLAIR is the man – and if you need someone to vouch for that, just ask Ronnie Garvin, or Dusty Rhodes, or Nikita Koloff, Brad Armstrong, Wahoo McDaniel, The Road Warriors, Lex Luger, Ole Anderson, Jimmy Garvin, Sting … or Buddy Landell! THAT, my friend, is what a championship resume looks like, and after Starrcade, I’ll be the unified world champion, and you’ll be just another name on that list!
Tony says, “Fans, that’s all the –“
A panicked David Crockett comes running up, telling Tony they’ve called for medical aid, as someone attacked the Rock & Roll Express in the parking lot, as Ricky and Robert were leaving the building, following their TV match and interview. Tony says, “Fans, obviously, we’ll try to update you on the conditions of Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson next week, but it’s certainly too early to tell … Well, David, do we know what happened?” David Crockett says, “Tony, it’s bad. It’s, it’s bad.” Tony says he’s getting the signal that we HAVE to go …
3. UWF (TBS Sun night) – 1 hr Jim Ross, standing in the ring and flanked by Brickhouse Brown and Steve Williams, welcomes fans to the show and says we have an exciting main event, as well as a BIG interview with “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes. But first, Brickhouse Brown has asked for a minute to make a statement. Brickhouse: “You know, I got nothing but respect for this man, our UWF world champion, because he truly is the toughest of the tough. But I’m pretty tough myself, and all I ever want is a fair shake. Now, last week, I didn’t get a fair shake. (Video inset of the finish of last week’s title match airs, showing the Landell interference) That’s not this man’s fault, and Doc, I appreciate what you did, coming to my aid like that, but all I’m asking for is a rematch. Let’s you and me get back in there, and if you beat me, I’ll be the first to shake your hand and say you were the better man.” Doc says he respects Brickhouse, and he will be glad to have a rematch with him, because after everything he’s been through with the Outlaws, Doc understands how frustrating it is to prepare for a major opportunity, only to have some interfering third party come in and ruin it. The two men shake hands, when Buddy Landell comes in the ring and snatches the mic from Ross. Landell: “Now just wait a minute! You want to talk about missed chances? Well, last night on TBS, I had the fake Nature Boy, that professional Buddy Landell impersonator Ric Flair, in the ring, and I was giving him a beating like nothing he’s ever seen! The man was crying, begging me, ‘Please, Buddy Landell, don’t hurt me anymore!’ He was about to submit, when Outhouse Brown comes out wearing one of MY priceless robes, and this thief cost me my world championship! That title should be MINE! Now, Steve Williams, you’re a great athlete, and you’ve improved a lot since I first met you in 1984, when myself and Ted DiBiase started teaching you everything you know today, but I challenged WHOEVER was gonna be champion after last week’s match, and you agreed! So if there’s a title match to be had, it’s gonna be the Nature Boy who‘s having it!” Ross asks Landell, “But didn’t YOU get your NWA title shot by stealing Ric Flair’s robe, in the first place? A lot of people might find it fitting that you lost that match for the very same reason.” Landell says, “Hey, Jim Ross, I FOUND that bag at the Chicago airport! See, the Road Warriors had stolen it off of the luggage rack, and I knew it wasn’t theirs, so I beat up both those Mohawk-haired freaks, just slapped ‘em around for a while, until they didn’t want no more and said, ‘Please, Mr. Landell, take it! Just don’t hurt us anymore!’ I tell you, it was sad – they were crying so hard their makeup was starting to run! So once I figured out whose bag it was, I called JJ Dillon, Ric Flair’s manager and told him I’d be glad to return it, because that’s the kind of honest guy I am! And I only wore his robe because I mistook it – yes, even the Nature Boy is occasionally mistaken – for my own. Now, had I inspected closer, I would have noticed that his robe used imitation cubic zirconia, instead of the pure diamonds that are on all my robes, but –“ Commissioner Bob Roop ends this nonsense by coming to the ring and saying that yes, Steve Williams’ oral agreement of last week would be sufficient to justify a title bout, IF the board considered Landell a worthy challenger, BUT since Landell has done so much of his recent wrestling in the NWA, he’s not presently a viable candidate for a UWF title shot. Landell starts to get outraged, but Roop holds up a hand and tells him either to listen, or be suspended outright from the UWF. Roop says Landell gets his chance, TODAY. Brickhouse was originally set to face Terry Funk in a No. 1 contender’s bout, but Ted DiBiase (on behalf of the Outlaws) has agreed to let Landell have the match, in exchange for future considerations. If Brickhouse agrees, that match will happen on today’s show, against Buddy Landell. Brickhouse thinks, while Landell flaps his arms like a chicken and points at Brown. Brickhouse leans over and says, “I accept,” before reaching over and slugging Landell, who takes an even BIGGER bump than he did for Brown last week. Ross says, “Well, folks, there you have it – our television main event! And fans, we’ll be right back … with the television title on the line, right after this!”
*BREAK*
TV title: Owen Hart beat Ted DiBiase by reverse-decision DQ, in 14:45 (*** ¾). Back and forth match, with DiBiase dominating more minutes of it, but Owen frequently breaking free of Ted’s matwork and chain wrestling to launch flurries of aerial attacks. Stan Hansen, at ringside and wearing his bullrope (w/ cowbell), is cheering on Ted. Commentary focuses on how DiBiase is hailed as one of the greatest technical wrestlers in the world and has years of experience over Owen, but Owen KEEPS reversing his moves and holds. Finally, DiBiase atomic drops Owen, who tumbles out of the ring, in front of Hansen. Hansen waits until Ted has the ref distracted and then BLASTS Owen in the head with the cowbell. Owen collapses onto the floor. Hansen scoops him up and rolls him into the ring. Owen, now a bloody mess, is helpless as DiBiase drops a fist onto him and goes for the cover … 1-2-3! The ref hands the belt to DiBiase, but looks at the bloody Owen and then when Hansen comes in, sees blood on the cowbell and TAKES the belt from him! The ref comes out of the ring, talks to the ring announcer, who says DiBiase has been disqualified for outside interference, so OWEN HART is still the champion! An enraged DiBiase and Hansen start putting the boots to Owen, until Steve Williams, Hacksaw Duggan and The Freebirds make the save! They tend to Owen, as we go to break.
*BREAK* Bob Roop is with Jim Ross, and tells Ross that the ref’s call must be respected, even though DiBiase has promised to launch a formal protest. Right now, let’s go to our in-ring main event, the No. 1 Contender’s match … Buddy Landell pinned Brickhouse Brown in 8:58, after a corkscrew elbowdrop (*** ¾). Brickhouse comes out strong with punches and dropkicks, but when he misses a running/flying cross-bodyblock, he snaps his neck against the top rope, making him easy prey for Landell’s big elbow. Landell struts off, saying to the camera, “Doctor Death, you’re next, boy!”
*BREAK*
Jim Ross says that there was only one man for the job of conducting this interview, so let’s go to him now. Magnum TA is backstage, and says he never thought the day would come when he would be anything but proud of his guest today, “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes! Dusty walks out with Ted DiBiase, Stan Hansen, The Funks and Dick Murdoch, who are all smiles. Magnum asks Dusty, “First off, Dream, I want to know – why? Why have you turned on everyone?” Dusty smiles and puts his hand on Magnum’s shoulder and says, “Magnum, you know, I remember when you were just Terry Allen, when you couldn’t win a match to save your life! And I took you under my wing, under the wing of the American Dream, and made you, molded you into the superstar you are today – well, not today, if you will, but you get my drift. “And all that time I spent molding you into a true superstar of professional wrestling … was WASTED! (Dusty removes his arm from Magnum’s shoulder) You had it all! You were US champion! You were the fastest-rising star in the world! And most of all, you had The American Dream Dusty Rhodes guiding you! And what did you do? You decided to race your car, and you crashed it! And you RUINED all my hard work! “And THAT is what happened with all the people who watch these TV programs and buy tickets to see The American Dream! They want to see the next big thing, whether it’s Nikita Koloff or Steve Williams! They tell The American Dream that his time is done, that it’s time for him to guide that next generation – I didn’t turn on them – THEY turned on the Americanh Dream! They showed me what YOU, Terry Allen, showed me – they’re LOSERS, just as YOU, my young friend, are a loser! And FROM NOW ON, THE AMERICAN DREAM ONLY RIDES WITH WINNERS – LIKE THE OUTLAWS!” Magnum points right in Dusty’s face and says, “I can’t believe what I’m hearing (Dusty is cutting in with “Get that finger OUT MY FACE!” over and over)! You can say what you want about me, but you turning your back on all the people? That’s disgusting. You need to take a good, long look –“ Dusty grabs Magnum’s lapels, gets in his face and yells, “YOU THINK YOU GET TO TALK TO THE AMERICAN DREAM LIKE THAT?! YOU THINK BEING A WEAK CRIPPLE WILL SAVE YOU, IF YOU GET IN MY FACE?!” Dusty shoves Magnum down to the floor! He spits on Magnum and is about to put the boots to him (as Jim Ross is screaming, “GET SOME HELP IN THERE!”) when, of all people, Terry Funk pulls Dusty off and says, “That’s enough, Dream! (looking at camera and sneering) I think we’ve made our point.” They walk off, as a couple of medics, Steve Williams, Hacksaw Duggan and The Freebirds burst in and tend to Magnum.
*BREAK*
Jim Ross says Hacksaw Duggan was scheduled next, against Terry Taylor in a rematch Duggan asked for, but because he’s tending to his old friend and partner Magnum TA, we’ve gotten a substitute – another ex-friend of Taylor’s with a score to settle – “Gentleman” Chris Adams! Terry Taylor pinned Chris Adams with the Fivearm, in 13:09 (** ¾). Chris starts out like a house of fire, and Taylor takes a powder. He gets back in, but repeats that trick a few more times, every time Adams gets a sustained advantage. Finally, he’s outside, and Adams comes over to the ropes to dare him back in, and Taylor grabs his ankle and pulls him out. Taylor slugs him and runs him into the guardrail. Adams staggers back into the ring, following Taylor and Taylor takes over with a headlock, repeatedly telling the ref Adams is pulling his hair and then throwing short jabs to Adams’ face when the ref is distracted. Finish comes when Adams fights his way out of the headlock, whips Taylor into the ropes and throws the superkick, but he misses, and Taylor springs off the ropes and into the Fivearm.
*BREAK*
Ross is in the ring with Rhodes, Murdoch, Hansen and Ted DiBiase. Ross says we don’t have enough time for another match, but he wants to see if the Outlaws would care to explain the despicable thing that happened with Magnum TA. Dusty grabs Ross’ lapels and says, “YOU WANT TO BE NEXT?!” He then snatches the mic and says, “Let The American Dream educate you people on something—“ But that’s as far as he gets, because Steve Williams, Hacksaw Duggan, and the Freebirds come ROARING in, sending the Outlaws flying. The Funks run in, followed by Owen Hart, and Ross is back at the announce position, screaming that we’re out of time, as these ten maniacs brawls all over the ringside area.

Syndicated shows for Sept '87, week 4 ...
2. NWA Main Event (Synd) – 1 hr (With all the angle-heavy content of this week’s other TV shows, this one’s a pretty straight wrestling show, with an update segment in the middle). Bob Caudle welcomes fans and says we have an exciting DOUBLE main event – Nikita Koloff’s first televised US title defense, and an 8-man tag! First, we get a brief video showing the finish of his win over Windham, and then Caudle says that, in an unusual act for an ex-champ, Windham has asked to postpone his rematches until he’s finished with ex-partner Ronnie Garvin, whom he blames for the loss. Windham’s there for a brief promo, where he notes that he used to carry the team with Ronnie before joining the Horsemen and getting to be an equal part of a great team. Windham says he’s let Garvin butt into his business for too long, and he’s going to end it, SOON. With that, Caudle says, “Let’s go to the ring, for our championship main event.”
U.S. title: Nikita Koloff pinned Tully Blanchard after a Russian sickle, in 8:41 (* ½). Caudle mentions that Dusty Rhodes had been scheduled as Nikita’s No. 1 contender, but for reasons Bob does not yet know, the NWA ordered this substitution.
*BREAK* Brief video packageto update fans on major TBS and UWF happenings.
Back to Bob, who says our second main event is in the ring.
The Road Warriors & The Southern Boys beat The Powers of Pain and The Rockers by DQ, in 21:11, when the Midnight Express ran in (** ¼). Originally scheduled as LOD and R&R Express, but Ricky and Robert have BOTH been injured, and that’s really alol we can say, ‘til next week, when we hope to have a condition update. As they enter the ringside area, Cornette (Still wearing neckbrace) tosses Stan the racquet, and he BLASTS LOD manager Paul Ellering with it. Then, Bobby gets Ellering up for a piledriver, and Stan comes off the ring apron to spike it! Then, Bubba picks up Ellering and drops him throat first along the guardrail. At this point, Hawk sees what’s going on, and he and Animal come out to check on their manager and tear Cornette and cronies apart. But all the other wrestlers join in, and with the heels’ 7-4 advantage, it’s not pretty. Caudle says we’ll try to restore some order, and we’ll be right back!
*BACK*
Barry Windham pinned Sam Houston after a bulldog, in 9:26 (*** ¼). The match takes so long because Barry refuses to pin him, just punishing more and more. FINally, the ref orders him to stop or be DQd, and Windham sets up the finisher. On commentary, Caudle emphasizes what good friends Ron Garvin and Barry were, and how that friendship has EXPLODED into something that only one of them might walk away from. The three-count happens as the credits are rolling and Bob tells us to come on back next week for another exciting edition of Main Event, which is about to undergo a massive change – moreon that next week.
4. Power Pro (UWF) (syndication) – 1 hr
We open with a quick video clip of Dusty shoving down Magnum TA, one of those 80s-style clips where its only a few seconds, and we freeze-frame at the end but keep playing the audio of all the commotion (catching the “That’s enough!” from Terry Funk, plus other yelps and scuffling sounds).
UWF Commissioner Bob Roop appears in a cold open, in front of a “UWF” banner. He says, “Wrestling fans, I hate to interrupt any of our exciting programs, but I feel I must, in this case, to make a special announcement. As anyone who saw this week’s UWF program on Superstation TBS already knows, Dusty Rhodes assaulted Magnum TA during an interview segment and, later, also accosted lead UWF announcer Jim Ross. While Magnum was a top-caliber wrestler, an auto accident tragically ended his career, about a year ago. The UWF has been very fortunate to have Magnum on board as a broadcast analyst, lending his excellent perspective as a wrestler to our programs. HOWEVER, ex-wrestler or not, Magnum TA is with the UWF as a broadcaster, and while the UWF has ALWAYS been the place for the most intense wrestling action in the world, we cannot and WILL not tolerate ANYONE abusing our broadcasters. They are not combatants, and they will not be treated as such. I’ll be meeting with the UWF board this week, to determine the full extent of what action we’ll take. That action will be announced next week, but I can promise you this – Dusty Rhodes will NOT go unpunished, and ANYONE who manhandles or attacks an announcer, referee or any other non-wrestler official, can count on swift and EXTREME punishment. Thank you for your time, and let’s return to the great UWF action, here on Power Pro Wrestling!”
We cut back to …
Chavo & Hector Guerrero are cutting a ringside promo with Jim Ross. CHAVO: “—but the Rockers have ducked us for the last time! So you two want to try to take ME out? Well, Hector and me, we’re going to have big brother Mando Guerrero watching our backs from here on out, and come Starrcade, it’ll be the Guerreros coming out on top with those –“
Jim Cornette (still wearing a neckbrace) comes to ringside and interrupts … “WAIT JUST A MINUTE! I, Jim Cornette, manager of the one and ONLY UWF world tag team champions, am sick and tired of hearing you two come out here to talk about some other tag team you want to challenge. Well, around here, there’s only ONE team that matters, and that’s the Midnight Express! So why don’t you two just hop on out of here and come back when you have the GUTS to challenge the world champions!” Cornette grabs the mic, faces the camera and says, “Road Warriors! You two goofs put on your best face paint for Starrcade and get—“ Hector grabs Cornette, who drops his racquet, and says, “Man, I have had just about ENOUGH of –“ BOOM! Bubba Rogers comes from behind and NAILS Hector. Chavo hits him, and the two are duking it out until Bobby and Stan run in and they triple team him until Mando Guerrero (armed with a chair), Jim Duggan and Owen Hart come out for the save. Ross says Mando’s bout is next, assuming he is not helping tend to his (bloody, prone) brothers, after the …
*BREAK*
Mando Guerrero beats Eddie Gilbert by DQ, in 4:10, when the Midnight Express attacked Guerrero (**). It’s a particularly savage beating. Bubba gives Mando the buba-slam onto a steel chair, and Stan and Bubba hold him draped over the top rope, as Bobby comes off the top with the racquet, drilling Mando in the midsection with the racquet. A manic, furious Cornette is directing traffic, like a sadist conducting a violent symphony. Ross is screaming that the other good guys are off with Chavo and Hector, leaving Mando without anyone to watch his back. The Express are jubilant, as they leave a destroyed Mando in the ring, coughing up blood.
*BREAK*
Terry Gordy pinned Dick Murdoch after the power bomb, in 7:00 (****). Dusty Rhodes and Michael Hayes, in their partners’ corners, get into a brawl at ringside, during the bout. The Funks and Stan Hansen come out, but so do Hacksaw Duggan, Buddy Roberts and Owen Hart! We get another five-on-five brawl, a brief one, until the Outlaws take a powder. Ross notes that the stage is set for next week, when the Outlaws challenge for the six-man belts on the upcoming week’s UWF show.
*BREAK*
Hacksaw Duggan beat the Barbarian by pinfall, after a spear, in 3:56 (*). Jim Ross explains that The Barbarian is a bounty hunter, hired by Eddie Gilbert to take out Duggan, on behalf of himself and his friend/partner, Terry Taylor.
*BREAK*
Terry Funk pinned Thunderfoot with the piledriver, in 4:14 (**).
*BREAK*
Main event: UWF tag titles: The Midnight Express beat Owen Hart and Rick Steiner in 13:58, when Lane pinned Steiner after a shot from Cornette’s racquet and a savate kick (*** ¾). During his ring intro, Cornette introduces his team as “The world leaders in family planning … as tonight, we pruned the Guerrero family tree by at least one!” Steiner dominates Eaton and Lane with power, and Owen uses speed and agility to leave the Express dizzy. In one key spot that leaves Ross raving about the challengers’ teamwork, Owen hits a spinning headscissors on Eaton, who takes the bump with a forward roll, only to rise just in time/place to receive a Steiner line. After the bout, Ross says Cornette wants to again address the TV audience, but as he says, “Fans, I hate to admit it, but for perhaps the first time ever, I am glad that we are out of time on this week’s edition of Power Pro! Please join us next week for that big title match, and hopefully an update on Mando Guerrero!”

NWA World: The Road Warriors UWF World: The Midnight Express U.S.: The Rockers
Oct 1987, Week 1 1. WCW (TBS Sat Night) – 2 hr We open with a video clip (NO commentary) of Ricky Morton being loaded onto the back of an ambulance.
David and Tony welcome viewers to the show, and say today’s a BIG show, and will feqture our first Starrcade Control Center update for 1987! But first, an update on the Rock & Roll Express, who were attacked in the locker room, just as we were going off the air last week. Tony says they are happy to be able to announce that the injuries to the Rock & Roll Express were not quite as severe as originally feared. Ricky suffered a bit more damage than Robert, who joins Tony and David at the podium. Tony asks what happened, and Robert says, “Um, me and Rick had showered after out match and changed, and we were about to go out to our car, when we got jumped out in the parking lot. Well, it was Janetty and Michaels, The Rockers, and they had pipes, and they ended up slamming Rick’s head in a car door. He’s got a concussion, and won’t be back for a couple of weeks, but you can bet, the Rock & Roll Express will be back, baby, and the Rockers better watch out!” The Express was originally set to challenge the Rockers today, for the U.S. tag titles, but Ricky Morton suffered a concussion and a separated shoulder last week, and our in-studio doctors will not clear him to wrestle. However, The Rockers WILL defend the titles today, against … The Southern Boys! Another quick news item: Dusty Rhodes had been scheduled for an upcoming US title match against his former super-partner, Nikita Koloff. Schiavone: “However, there was an incident on the UWF program last week that shocked and horrified all of us, and we need to take a look at that right now.” (short clip of incident where Dusty assaulted Magnum). Schiavone announces that UWF Commissioner Bob Roop has met with NWA officials, because there can be NO tolerance for wrestlers assaulting announcers, and Roop will announce Rhodes’ full punishment on this week’s UWF show. However, one thing we can say today is that the NWA has agreed to cancel Rhodes’ scheduled US title match, to show its stance against announcers being abused. With that, Tony says we have Ted DiBiase on hand, and he has a few comments. DiBiase: “Tony Schiavone, this is nothing short of an injustice; The American Dream is one of the greatest attractions in pro wrestling today, and a proven winner – the man earned that title shot in the ring, and it was taken away in a board room! Well, The Outlaws, THE most powerful group in all of wrestling, are not going to take this lying down, and I can promise you that the NWA has NOT heard the last of this situation!” DiBiase walks off, and Tony says we have some action in the ring, so let’s get to it now!
*BREAK*
Squashes/promos include: Sting (says he’s back and 100%, can’t wait to get revenge on Gilbert); Kevin Sullivan/Bad News Allen/Bam Bam Bigelow (challenge Freebirds for 6-man titles); Stan Hansen (says he’s tired of beating of chumps and having title holders duck him, so he challenges ANYONE still holding gold when the Starrcade dust settles); Ron Garvin (details below); Wahoo McDaniel (wants a piece of Dusty Rhodes for what he did to Magnum); Midnight Express (Cornette says he has a foolproof plan to deal with the LOD, by neutralizing their most dangerous component); The Freebirds (Michael heard Kevin Sullivan out here earlier, and the Birds will take on anyone, anytime).
*BREAK*
Starrcade Update Center: Bob Caudle and Jim Ross welcome fans to the first of a series of weekly segments previewing the biggest event in wrestling history, when two of the greatest wrestling associations in the world come together, as one. Ross says the matches we already know of are the bouts that will unify the world, world tag and world TV titles. We also know that The Freebirds are negotiating to defend the six-man titles in a special match, and there are a few other things being negotiated, which we’ll be telling you about, in the weeks to come. As Ross says the names of the champs in the three unification bouts, we should get brief video snippets of the named wrestlers. Caudle then reminds fans that these names could be subject to change, as Starrcade will feature the champions, WHOEVER they are, in the unification matches. This week, we’re featuring the TV title unification, which, historical implications aside, looks to be a rare chance for fans to see a clean, scientific match between two great wrestlers – NWA TV champion Brad Armstrong, and UWF TV champion Owen Hart. We do a split screen showing Brad on one side, Owen on the other, as we flash bits of text that capture Ross and Caudle’s points. Ross says Brad has the edge, in terms of in-ring experience, as he’s been active for 7 years, while Owen is in his sophomore year within the sport. Caudle, however, points out that both men effectively have a lifetime of experience, as both men are second-generation wrestlers who grew up around the sport. Ross says Armstrong might have an edge in strength, while Owen has a likely advantage in speed. Next, we go to video promos with each man, and both say they look forward to a clean match, for once, and no matter who wins, both men promise to shake hands, after it’s all over, and may the best man win!
*BREAK*
Ron Garvin squash: Barry Windham runs in during the bout, attacking Garvin, taking him out of the ring, running his head into the post and then applying the claw until Garvin goes limp. He scoots when Wahoo and the Southern Boys come out for the save, but comes to the podium later and says he hasn’t BEGUN to take revenge on Garvin for costing him the US title.
*BREAK*
TV Main event: US tag title match: The Rockers are in the ring, and attack the Southern Boys as Smothers and S. Armstrong enter the ring. All four men are in the ring for the entire bout, which only lasts 1:02, as the Southern Boys reverse double whips into the corners, into a do-si-do of changing directions that leads the Rockers slam-bang into each other. They go down, and The Southern Boys go up to opposite top turnbuckles. Smothers missile-dropkicks Michaels, Armstrong missile-dropkicks Jannetty, and The Southern Boys have the Rockers covered for a double pin … 1-2-3! New Champs The Southern Boys grab the belts, run over to the podium, and Steve says, “We just want to thank all the great fans out there!” Tracy interjects, “That’s right! This one’s for you, guys! Thanks for sticking with us!” Tony says we have time enough for one more match, so we’ll be right back.
*BREAK*
Ivan & Nikita Koloff tag squash, and Tony says we’ll have the Koloffs in for an interview, time permitting, because we know all the fans want to hear how this family team came back together … but time runs out, mid-match. Tony says we’ll try to have the Koloffs next week, so tune in, fans!

Howdy! Here are NWA Main Event and the UWF shows, for Oct, week 1. I should have Power Pro plus house show results up tomorrow.
2. NWA Main Event (Synd) – 1 hr
Bob Caudle welcomes viewers and says we have another great program today, as the countdown to Starrcade begins! We have a great main event, a grudge battle that pits The Garvins against Horsemen Windham and Blanchard! Also, with us, a little later, we’ll have NWA World Champion Ric Flair, who will join us on commentary as we take a special look at that “other” world champion, the UWF’s Steve “Dr. Death” Williams! But first up, we have what could be a wild one – The battle of the Bam Bams, Gordy vs. Bigelow!
Gordy’s in the ring, joined by Hayes, but when Sullivan accompanies Bigelow to the ring, he takes the mic and says, as leader of the Brotherhood, he’s made an executive decision that it’ll be a tag match! He says he’s cleared it with the NWA matchmakers, if Hayes agrees, as Sullivan wants to show that the Brotherhood can beat the Freebirds and should be in line for a six-man title shot. Before Hayes can respond, Sullivan says, “Of course, if you’re the coward I think you are, I can always give you a little incentive” and SLAPS Hayes. Hayes whips off his shirt, says, “Let’s Go!,” and the tag match is on! Hayes starts out charging at Sullivan, who grabs Hayes’ hair and uses his momentum to take him into the Brotherhood’s corner. Bigelow holds Hayes, as Sullivan drills him with an open-hand chop. Sullivan tags Bigelow, who presses Hayes and throws him into the Freebirds’ corner – Bigelow WANTS Hayes to tag Gordy, but Sullivan is screaming, “What are you doing?!” Gordy comes in, and the brawl in on. Gordy starts out with a flurry, but Bigelow actually gets the advantage, as they battle across the ring. Bigelow even presses the 280-pound Gordy over his head, and then steps outside the ring, ascends to the second rope and hits a diving headbutt. He goes for a pin, but only gets two. Bigelow clamps on a rear chinlock, but Sullivan demands a tag, and Bigelow complies, whipping Gordy into the corner and tagging Sullivan. They double team Gordy and whip him into the ropes, but Gordy comes off the ropes with a double clothesline that levels both men. Bigelow rolls out of the ring, and Gordy picks up Sullivan for a lightning-quick snap suplex. He then picks up Sullivan, calls for the tag and slams Sullivan into Hayes’ outstretched foot. Hayes comes in like a house of fire, and Sullivan bumps all over the ring for him. The tide turns when Hayes goes to pick up Sullivan, who rakes the eyes. Sullivan clotheslines Hayes, and then does a series of chokes, breaking just before the ref counts 5. Finally, Sullivan drags Hayes to the Brotherhood’s corner, and again, Bigelow holds Hayes, but this time, as Sullivan charges across the ring, Hayes ducks, and Sullivan hits Bigelow, who sprawls down to the floor. Sullivan is focused on yelling at Bigelow, when Hayes knocks him into the corner with a running kneesmash to the back. Hayes then brings him out of the corner with a bulldog. Hayes tags Gordy, who finishes off Sullivan with a clothesline and a power bomb. The Freebirds (Hayes and Gordy) beat The Brotherhood (Sullivan and Bigelow) in 6:19, when Gordy pinned Sullivan after a power bomb. (** ¾). After the bout, Sullivan and Bigelow argue, until Sullivan slaps him. Bigelow shoves Sullivan so hard he flies into the turnbuckle, six feet away. Bigelow grabs Sullivan in a choke lift, but Bad News Allen runs in! Allen is begging Bigelow to release Sullivan, and after a few tense seconds, he does. The two stare at each other, until Sullivan smiles and opens his arms to offer a hug. Bigelow shakes his head and reluctantly complies, giving Kevin a brief embrace, before all three join hands and raise their arms, as if in victory. Bob Caudle comments on the strange mental hold Sullivan seems to hold over these tough athletes, as we go to …
*BREAK*
Starrcade Update Center: Same as on TBS, and as we come out of it, Caudle says we’ll next have two world champs in another Starrcade preview (of sorts), as Ric Flair joins us on commentary for a bout featuring Steve “Dr. Death” Williams.
*BREAK*
Steve Williams pinned Tommy Angel, in 1:09, with the Oklahoma Stampede. Angel’s lone bit of offense comes when he clamps a headlock on Doc, who simply takes Angel by the thigh and back and LAUNCHES him across the ring. The rest of the bout is press slams, suplexes and the Stampede. Flair, on commentary, says things like, “Of course, he could never throw Ric Flair like that” and “He’s a very impressive athlete, and an incredibly powerful individual, but Ric Flair, THE world heavyweight champion, has been turning back challenges from the most powerful men in this great sport since Steve Williams was sweating final exams at the University of Oklahoma – I’m talking about men like Lex Luger, Nikita Koloff, The Road Warriors and Sting, to name but a few.” After the bout, Doc, steps to the side of the ring facing the announce table and points at Flair, but Flair says, “Yeah, big boy, that was a really impressive win! One whole minute! Well, when I get you in that ring, we’ll see what you have left in the tank after 30 minutes! Or 40! You’ll have your tongue dragging on the mat, and Ric Flair’s gonna take you to school!” Caudle thanks Flair for joining him, and says we’ll be right back with our main event.
*BREAK*
Barry Windham & Tully Blanchard beat The Garvin Brothers in 12:01, when Barry pinned Jimmy with the claw. (**) Story of the match is that Barry tags out whenever Ronnie comes in, especially once the Horsemen start getting heat on Jimmy. Finally, when Barry pins Jimmy, (with Tully brawling with Ronnie in the opposite corner) he refuses to release the claw, until Ronnie finally flattens Tully with the Hands of Stone punch and charges Barry. He gets a couple of licks in before Barry releases the claw. Ronnie is tempted to go after a gloating Windham, but he instead tends to his downed brother, as Barry and JJ Dillon gather Tully at ringside. However, Dillon hands Barry a chain, which he wraps around his hand, and from outside the ring, he blasts Ronnie with it, as Ronnie is still focused on Jimmy. The Garvin brothers lay in a bloody heap, as the Horsemen leave the ringside area, and Caudle says that’s all the time we have this week, folks!
3. UWF (TBS Sun night) – 1 hr UWF Commissioner Bob Roop stands beside Jim Ross, who welcomes viewers to the show. Ross says we have a HUGE main event – Steve Williams defends the world title against the man who, like him or not, earned the No. 1 contender’s position by beating Brickhouse Brown last week – “Nature Boy” Buddy Landell! But first up, we have an announcement from the commissioner … Roop says, “You know, Jim, the UWF has built its reputation on having the toughest athletes and most intensely physical showdowns in the entire wrestling world. However, our announcers and commentators are NOT competitors. You know, Jim, Major League Baseball would never tolerate a ballplayer physically abusing Bob Costas, and we’re not going to tolerate anyone abusing our announcers. So I am here today to announce that Dusty Rhodes has been fined $35,000! Now, Ted DiBiase has paid the fine on his behalf, but the UWF has ALSO barred Dusty Rhodes from competing for any championship for the next 60 days! This means that The Outlaws are going to have to come up with a substitute for Mr. Rhodes in their upcoming six-man title match with the Freebirds. And I’m happy to report that the NWA is cooperating, stripping Mr. Rhodes of his upcoming US title bouts with Nikita Koloff. And I’m here to serve notice – ANY wrestler, manager, or valet who puts his hands on an announcer will be suspended for at LEAST six months.” Ross thanks Roop for coming in to make that announcement and then recaps last week’s DiBiase-Owen TV title match. Short video replay of last week’s finish, and Ross says DiBiase has cried foul, Owen said they should settle it in the ring, and the contracts have been signed. Ross says we’ll have that TV title rematch here, next week! Ross also says that Magnum was uninjured and will be back next week. But now, we go to the ring for our first match … Ted DiBiase beat Brickhouse Brown by K.O. in 6:44, when Brown passed out in the figure four leglock.(***) Pretty much a showcase for DiBiase, with Ross commenting that Brickhouse’s agility is similar to what DiBiase will be facing next week, in Owen Hart. DiBiase uses chain wrsestling (and with increasing frequency, hair-pulling and eye-raking) to counter Brown’s flurries of offense.
*BREAK*
Next up, Ross says, we have a bout that was originally scheduled for last week’s show, Hacksaw Duggan versus Terry Taylor! Hacksaw Duggan pinned Terry Taylor after a spear, in 9:26 (*** ¼). Jim Ross notes on commentary that these former partners have developed a very heated rivalry, with Taylor and Eddie Gilbert even trying to sic bounty hunters (like the Powers of Pain) on Duggan. Duggan dominates, but Taylor gains a series of brief advantages, capitalizing on Eddie Gilbert’s liberal interference. Finish comes when Duggan yanks Eddie up onto the apron, sick of his interference, and throttles him. Taylor launches himself against the opposite ropes, to launch into the Fivearm, but Duggan ducks, and Taylor clocks Gilbert! Taylor turns around just in time to catch a spear, and 1-2-3! After the bout, the Powers of Pain run in and attack, and it’s 4-on-1 until Sting, Rick Steiner and Owen Hart make the save.
*BREAK*
Starrcade Update Center: Same segment as TBS Saturday
*BREAK*
TV Main event: UWF title: Steve “Dr. Death” Williams vs Buddy Landell. It’s pretty much a showcase for Doc’s power and fast-paced mat wrestling, with the focus being that Doc has an answer for every move in Landell’s Ric Flair-redux repertoire. We also catch, at the back of the aisle, JJ Dillon busily taking notes. In the last few seconds, Ross says we’re running out of time, and should this bout exceed the time-limit, we’ll bring you the finish next week (as this was signed for a 60-minute limit, an exception to the “TV time remaining” rule). Landell eye gouges and snap mares Doc over, then quickly hits his corkscrew elbow, for a 1 … 2… Doc kicks off with such authority that Landell flies halfway across the ring. The credits start to roll as Landell springs off the ropes, but a rising Williams catches him and PLANTS him with the Stampede! Your official result: Steve Williams retains the title, pinning Landell with the Oklahoma Stampede, in 8:10 (*** ½).

The last of Oct, week 1, 1987 ...
4. Power Pro (UWF) (syndication) – 1 hr Jim Ross welcomes viewers to the show and says we have a huge main event today, a six-man title bout with the Freebirds and the Outlaws. It was originally slated to be Hansen, Murdoch and Dusty against the Birds, but (somewhere in here is a brief video recap of the Dusty-Magnum situation and Roop’s subsequent announcement of Dusty’s punishment) since Rhodes has been barred from his signed title matches, The Outlaws are substituting Terry Funk. And that match is … NEXT!
*BREAK*
6-man titles: Stan Hansen, Dick Murdoch and Terry Funk vs The Freebirds. Hansen and Gordy start out, and they are HAMMERING each other, as Ross talks about their brutal feud of the past few months. The pair brawl until they both goes for rope-launched shoulder tackles, and the collision sends both men to the canvas. Both men slowly inch to their corners, where Hansen tags Terry just as Gordy tags Hayes. Hayes gets the better of the initial exchange, but Terry ducks a clothesline and drops Hayes with a pseudo-neckbreaker, pulling Hayes’ hair. As they battle, Hansen comes around the ring, on the outside, and yanks down Gordy. They brawl in the ringside area, and eventually down the aisle, away from the ring. The next few minutes are a stretch of getting heat on Hayes, as Terry and Murdoch tag frequently and use every dirty, ref-distracting trick they know to keep Hayes from tagging Roberts. Finally, Hayes ducks a double clothesline (evoking the spot from the Brotherhood match on Main Event) and rebounds with a double clothesline of his own. However, The Midnight Express and Jim Cornette have yanked down Roberts, and Lane hotshots him throat-first over the guardrail; Hayes tries to get out of the ring to help, as the ref calls for the DQ, but the two remaining Outlaws, now joined by Dory Funk, keep him in the ring and work him over. Meanwhile, Eaton has Roberts up for a piledriver, and Lane jumps onto the apron, grabs Roberts’ feet and SPIKES the piledriver onto the concrete. All this happens while Cornette is screaming, “How do YOU like it?” Finally, a bloody Gordy charges down to ringside, with Hansen hot on his heels. The Express scoots, but before Gordy can tend to his partners, Hansen catches him with a punch, and their brawl is back on! Hacksaw Duggan and the Guerreros run out to chase the other Outlaws away, but Gordy and Hansen have already started brawling up a different aisle. Match time: 14:40 (****)
*BREAK*
Rick Steiner pinned Big Bubba after a belly to belly suplex, in 6:01 (***). When Cornette (still sporting his neckbrace) intro’s Bubba, he says, “Welcome back to Power Pro Wrestling, now with 33% less Freebirds! Maybe Buddy Roberts and Mando Guerrero can get a nice canasta game going, to enjoy their retirements! And here to shorten another career is the biggest, baddest man in the world today …” With Bubba mid-match, The Guerreros come down and menace Cornette, but before they can do any damage, Lane and Eaton run down, and it’s another melee! Bubba’s distraction leads to a Steiner line that drops him and leads to the finish.
*BREAK*
Starrcade Update Center segment
*BREAK*
Sting pinned The Warlord in 9:10 after a Stinger splash and flying bodypress/splash. (*) More than once, Sting chases Gilbert around at ringside. After the bout, Sting comes to ringside for a promo, saying he’ll work his way through Gilbert’s crew until only Eddie himself is left. Ross says that’s all the time we have this week, folks …

OK, I'd hopes to have more done by now, but the Sat night TBS show ended up having a lot of stuff, so here it is, and I'll have the other three shows up very shortly.
Oct 1987, Week 2 1. WCW (TBS Sat Night) – 2 hr We open with Ted DiBiase and the Outlaws (minus a conspicuously absent Dusty Rhodes) at the podium with Tony and David, and he says he has a major announcement. As announced last week, Dusty Rhodes had been stripped of several title opportunities, as his punishment for manhandling announcers Magnum TA and (to a lesser extent) Jim Ross. However, two weeks back on UWF TV, The Outlaws received some “future consideration” in exchange for giving up a top-contender’s bout at the UWF’s request. That consideration will come in the form of The Outlaws getting to designate who will fulfill those title-shot contracts. Terry Funk: “Now, for all you simple-minded people out there, that means that The Outlaws will still get our shot at those long-haired freaks the Freebirds, and an Outlaw WILL challenge that Russian pervert for the United States championship!” DiBiase says Funk is right and that “I have sent Dusty Rhodes on a well deserved vacation, so he can clear his mind of all these NWA/UWF/WCW conspiracies that have been working against him ever since he decided not to play the patsy for Jim Crockett, Bob Roop and all of these idiot fans! So, I am here today to tell you that The Outlaws HAVE selected the man who will challenge Nikita Koloff for the US title – and he’s a new addition! Nikita Koloff, and the wrestling world, will meet the NEWEST member of the Outlaws right here on today’s program!” With that, DiBiase laughs heartily, as do the other Outlaws, except Hansen, who deposits a big lump of tobacco spit on the studio floor and yells, “There’s a little present for ya!” David and Tony marvel at this situation in which Nikita must defend the US title, without being able to prepare for his opponent. With that, we go to the ring for our first bout … The Rockers squash. It’s quick (less than a minute), and in their post-match promo: They were ROBBED and demand a rematch w/ the Southern Boys, but leave abruptly when told the Guerreros are out next.
*BREAK*
Other squashes/promos include: The Guerrero Brothers (they want the Rockers, The Midnights, and they’re SICK of being stepped on); Stan Hansen (he’s demanding respect, and getting tired of being overlooked), Wahoo McDaniel (winding his career down, he’s looking to make a major announcement soon, and still wants a piece of Dusty)
*BREAK*
Ivan and Nikita Koloff are at the podium. Nikita, in his broken English, talks about how Ivan had brought him to the States, they had a falling out when Nikita teamed with Dusty after Magnum’s crash, and how Ivan contacted him after Dusty turned on him, not to say, ‘I told you so,’ but to offer support. Ivan then jumps in: “You know, Ivan Koloff has wrestled in America for many years! And I still no agree with much of American philosophy, but have learned to respect many American opponents. And although we fight, nephew Nikitastill family! And when this Dusty Rhodes turn on him, he and these so-called Outlaws now will have to deal with Koloffs!” Tony asks Nikita how he trains for a mystery opponent, and Nikita says no matter who it is, he hits the gym, practices the wrestling and is ready to give his all, regardless of opponent. With that, they head off, and we go to the ring … More squashes/promos: Ron Garvin (swearing revenge for what Barry did to Jimmy, Ronnie proposes he and Barry settle things at Starrcade); Terry Taylor (w/ Eddie Gilbert – Taylor wins via submission, using the SCORPION, and says he’s the sharpest tactician in wrestling and is now fully prepped to take out Sting, once and for all, and then he and Eddie will finish that other traitor, Steiner).
*BREAK*
Starrcade Update Center: Bob Caudle & Jim Ross welcome fans. Last week, we featured the TV title bout, scheduled as a rare scientific encounter between Owen Hart and Brad Armstrong, and this week, we’re focused on another title unification bout – and this one promises to contain MUCH less sportsmanship -- UWF Tag Champs The Midnight Express versus NWA tag champs The Road Warriors! Because of the volatile situation between these two teams and their managers, officials have set up a satellite linkup, rather than risk an altercation by having both Ellering and Cornette in the same studio at the same time. But before we hear from the managers, Caudle says, let’s review some history: last year, The Midnight Express began a feud with the Warriors by attacking them on TBS, with the feud culminating in the scaffold match at last year’s Starrcade, won by the Warriors. Since then, there have been some minor skirmishes, but the NWA suspension of the Express and Cornette earlier this year took these two teams out of each other’s paths – even the inter-promotional events, such as this summer’s UWF vs NWA Wargames bouts, saw the two teams facing off against other rivals, not each other. And Jim Ross notes that these are THE two dominant teams in wrestling, and each team has turned back some of the top tandems in wrestling, in the months that EACH team has been world champions. As for the tale of the tape, The Warriors collectively outweigh the Express by about 90 pounds, have a clear power advantage and have the edge in experience tagging together, as The Warriors have been tagging up for more than four years, while Eaton and Lane have only been teaming regularly since Lane replaced original Midnighter Dennis Condrey, in April. However, in overall terms, Lane and Eaton have about twice as much wrestling experience as the Warriors, debuting about a decade ago, compared to five years ago for the each of the Warriors. Ross says the Midnights have the advantage in speed and notes that while both teams are devastating in double-team situations, the Midnight Express might have the edge, as a team that is constantly debuting new doubleteam moves and adding things to the arsenal, thanks to Jim Cornette being an avid videotape collector and true student of in-ring strategy. Ross says, “And that’s what this historic match might come down to, between these two very different teams – who has the better plan, out of these two managers, unquestionably the top two managers in wrestling today, Paul Ellering and Jim Cornette. Jim Cornette has been managing about a year longer than Precious Paul, but Ellering preceded his managerial career with a successful stint as a wrestler, touring the country for years as a featured attraction. And that could give the Warriors an added perspective that Cornette – who has NEVER been confused with an athlete – cannot offer!” With that, Ross says, we’re going to turn it over to the two managers, who have some thoughts on the matter. Ellering, who is in studio with Ross and Caudle, says, “Jim Ross, you forgot one major point – In our many matches, The Midnight Express has NEVER beaten the Road Warriors by pinfall! Hawk and Animal have, of course, recorded several pinfall victories over the Midnight Express, to say nothing of Starrcade 86’s scaffold match – a match that ended in defeat for the Midnight Express, and a HORRIBLE injury to Jim Cornette, when Hawk and Animal sent him off the scaffold, the hard way! Well, Jim Cornette, this year’s Starrcade is going to be no better for you or your men, because once again, The Legion of Doom is going to trounce the Midnight Express, but THIS time, when we do, Hawk and Animal will be walking out as the undisputed tag team champions of the world! (video of Midnights attacking Ellering two weeks back plays as he talks) And your pitiful effort to injure me, a couple of weeks ago, only shows your desperation in the face of this inevitable truth! And even as we speak, Hawk and Animal are working in the gym, pushing themselves to be their strongest and fastest – and that, as Hawk loves to say, is good for US, bad for YOU!” Caudle asks Cornette, visible on a screen and beamed in via satellite linkup, if he would like to respond. In A SHOCKING turn of events, Jim Cornette does indeed have an opinion to share. Cornette: “I have to say, that was an amazing statement by *pfftt* ‘Precious’ Paul, and some of what he just said was true. But Paul Ellering, now you get to do what you do best, which is to sit there and stroke your beard while someone much more interesting takes the floor! Now, I will admit that Starrcade 1986 was not Jim Cornette’s finest hour, not the Midnight Express’ finest hour, but I will correct one thing my *chuckle* esteemed colleague said – The Road Warriors have NEVER defeated this team! Those two musclebounds idiots beat ‘Beautiful’ Bobby Eaton at a time Bobby was having to carry a lesser partner, but they have NEVER beaten the New & Improved Midnight Express of Beautiful Bobby and Sweet Stan!” Ross interjects: “Jim Cornette, you’ve used ‘New and Improved’ to describe the Midnight Express with Stan Lane – when you decided to replace Dennis Condrey, what made Stan Lane the right choice to team with Beautiful Bobby, what do you think he added to the team, and how do you think this change helps the Midnight Express match up with such an awesome force as The Road Warriors?” Cornette: “Well, Spanky, I’m glad you asked! Six months ago, The Midnight Express was floundering, and I was under orders from Mother to fix the problem. When Mother and I sat down to watch some taped footage, we quickly identified that Bobby Eaton was still the most incredible aerial weapon since the nuclear missile, but that his partner had lost a step! Stan Lane has added a GREAT deal – martial arts mastery and speed! And, I’m happy to say, a KEEN mind – you know, I’ve always been known as the mastermind of the Midnight Express, ther guy who comes up with the sneaky plots, but I have to give Stan credit – THIS bit of cleverness was his idea!” The announcers and Ellering look puzzled and start to form questions, when STAN LANE AND BOBBY EATON crash onto the set and attack Ellering! He not only gets spike-piledriven AGAIN, but Stan holds him while Bobby delivers a series of punches to his head. He goes down, and Stan grabs a board and repeatedly blasts Ellering’s left knee! During the entire attack, Cornette is cackling. Finally, Cornette says, “That’s enough, boys!” They walk off, smiling, as Cornette says, “Hey, Road Warriors! See you at Starrcade!” Ross and Caudle have completely abandoned announcing, and both are hollering for medical help for Ellering, as we fade out.
*BREAK*
TV Main Event: Nikita Koloff is in the ring, waiting for his United States championship challenger, with Ivan on the floor at ringside. Ted DiBiase comes out, walks to the podium and grabs the mic. “Well, Tony and David, remember this day, because we’re about to make history! Today, The Outlaws add a member who has main evented in arenas around the country, even though he hasn’t been seen in a few years, and the next U.S. heavyweight champion … please welcome THE MIDNIGHT RIDER!” A heavyset masked man comes to ringside, doing pretty much ALL of Dusty Rhodes’ mannerisms. He hits the ring and immediately attacks a surprised Nikita. As David and Tony talk about the Rider as a guy who came into Florida a few years ago when Dusty lost a loser-leaves bout and leaving right before Dusty returned, The Rider (with bleached blonde hair sticking out of the back of his mask) loses the advantage when Nikita ducks a charge and hits a shoulder tackle. Nikita takes over with power moves and a chinlock, but the Rider anticipates and reverses several of his moves, as if he were familiar with Nikita’s arsenal from years of teaming with him … Nikita finally hits the sickle, but heads to the boundary of the ring when DiBiase accosts Ivan. As they face off, Hansen comes from behind and BLASTS Ivan with the cowbell. As Nikita reaches outside the ring, Hansen blasts HIM with the cowbell, as well, while the ref is tending to the Midnight Rider. Nikta staggers back, and The Rider catches him in a schoolboy for the 1 … 2 … 3! The Midnight Rider is the new U.S. champion! He slides out of the ring with the belt, and Schiavone says he’s coming to the podium, but we’re out of time, so we’ll hear from the new champion next week …

OK, October 1987 Week 2 is officially the longest week of my entire life. Here's Oct 87 Week 2's NWA Main Event show. UWF shows will be up shortly.
2. NWA Main Event (Synd) – 1 hr
Bob Caudle welcomes fans to the show and says we’ll be showing the Starrcade Update Center in its entirety later, but there was a heinous attack, and Bob wants fans to know that Paul Ellering has suffered jammed vertebrae and a shattered kneecap, and it’s not known right now when he might return to ringside. Caudle knows the Warriors will be out for blood come Starrcade, and in addition to the prestige of the undisputed tag team championship of the world, there will be some serious grudges being settled in the inaugural WCW event. Sepaking of tag titles, the Southern Boys are the new US champs, but there will be no chance for them to rest on their laurels, as they defend in today’s main event, against Eddie Gilbert & Terry Taylor! Bob also updates the US title situation, saying we’ll have new champ Dus --, uh, The Midnight Rider here next week! Right now, to kick off the show with a bang (or, perhaps, a “BAM”), we have a rematch, of sorts, which both wrestlers demanded: BATTLE OF THE BAM BAMS: Terry “Bam Bam” Gordy battled Bam Bam Bigelow to a double countout, in 8:17 (*** ¼). This one’s wild, and they don’t spend much time in the ring. Bigelow’s in first, and Gordy charges him upon entering the ring. They spill outside the ring, and Kevin Sullivan’s approach is met by Michael Hayes. Hayes and Sullivan battle outside the ring while Gordy and Bigelow make it back inside. Highlights include Gordy snap-suplexing Bigelow, but Bigelow backdropping out of the power bomb. Bigelow then hits a top-rope headbutt, but Gordy kicks out at 2. Bigelow climbs the ropes again, but as he reaches the top, Gordy is up and shakes the ropes, causing Bigelow to crotch himself on the top rope. Gordy gets on the 2nd turnbuckle for an attempted superplex (!), but Bigelow fights back with a series of headbutts, which send Gordy spilling over the ropes and back out of the ring. Bigelow goes out after him, and the ref counts to 10 as they brawl their way around the ring, once more. Referees and half the undercard, as well as bFreebird Buddy Roberts (wearing a neckbrace) come out to break them up, but the two big men shake off the guys trying to break it up, and go after one another time after time. Finally, Caudle says we have to go to break, as we try to get order restored.
*BREAK*
Starrcade Update Center: Replay of Warriors-Midnight segment.
*BREAK*
The Rockers come out to join Bob Caudle on commentary, for our main event, the US tag title bout. US tag titles: The Southern Boys beat Eddie Gilbert & Terry Taylor in 14:53, when Smothers pinned Taylor with a sunset flip (*** ½). It’s a back and forth match, with plenty of doubleteaming on one side, then the other, and the end comes when Smothers has Taylor mid-sunset, but close enough to the ropes that he can reach Gilbert’s hands. They clinch until Arnstrong comes around the apron and dropkicks Gilbert, who sprawls to the concrete, breaking their grip and leading to Taylor being pinned. Commentary during the match consists of Rockers saying the Southern Boys got lucky, but The Rockers have the experience and the explosiveness, and now that they have the Southern Boys scouted, it’s just a matter of time untikl the belts are theirs again. Post-match, the Rockers are standing up at the announce table, yelling at Smothers and Armstrong, who finally notice them and start jawing back, as Gilbert and Taylor slink back to the locker room. Robert Gibson comes to ringside, also yelling and pointing at Jannetty and Michaels. Michaels starts to say something about Gibson “looking awfully lonely without your better half,” when RICKY MORTON comes from behind, bearing an axe handle, and BRAINS Michaels from behind. Jannetty turns just in time to get jabbed in the gut with it. He goes down, and Gibson comes over to the table; the two of them toss the Rockers up the aisle. Morton: “Bob Caudle, The Rock & Roll Express have always gone after championships, because we wanted to be the best! To be the best we could be, to bring these nice people the champions they deserve! But right now, Robert and I are willing to set that aside, because the Rockers have back jumped The Guerrero brothers, and the Rock & Roll Express, and they’ve done it for the last time! We’re coming for YOU, Rockers! And when we’re done with you, and you’re on your way out of the NWA, THEN we’ll worry about the US tag titles, and hopefully, we can face off with the Guerreros, or the Southern Boys – a team we can have a fair match with, and some respect!” They walk off, and Caudle says we have time for more action, so we’ll be right back with a major grudge rematch …
*BREAK*
Standby match: Arn Anderson (w/ JJ Dillon) vs Lex Luger (w/ Wahoo McDaniel): Heels are in the ring when we return, and Luger asks for the mic from the ring announcer. Luger says he’s had enough of his mistreatment at the hands of the Horsemen, and tonight, payback begins, starting with Arn. The first couple of minutes, Luger totally dominates with power and no-selling most of Arn’s early offense. Dillon tries to interfere, reaching into the ring, but the ref catches him and is arguing with him, when Wahoo comes around and drills Dillon with a chop. In the ring, Arn takes over with an armbar, and after a couple of minutes, Luger finally powers his way out and floors Arn with a whip into the corner, coming off into a press slam. Luger turns around and starts doing crab poses, apparently proud of his last little sequence. Wahoo is yelling for him to turn around, and sure enough, just as Luger looks at Wahoo, Arn comes up from behind, hooks his arms and drops him back in a crucifix, for the pin! Final result: Arn Anderson pinned Lex Luger with the crucifix, in 11:08 (** 1/2). Caudle says we have just a few minutes left, so we’ll take a quick break and be right back.
*BREAK*
Caudle says threre’s not enough time for another match, so we’ll end with a quick interview. He’s at ringside with Luger and Wahoo. Caudle says Luger must be frustrated with the match’s outcome, and he asks where Luger goes from here. Luger says he has stuck with Wahoo because of the legendary star’s years of experience, but his wisdom has not seemed to do The Total Package much good. Wahoo says, “Whoa, now, Lex! It wasn’t MY idea for you to showboat long enough for Arn Anderson to recover. Just now! You have a million-dollar body, but it won’t do you any good until you get your head on straight! (Luger is getting increasingly angry) This isn’t Professional Posing – it’s professional wrestling! And those muscles are useless if they’re attached to a brain that’s not focused on business!” Luger SLAPS Wahoo, who takes a step back and SLAPS Luger even harder, in response. Wahoo starts jawing about how Luger had better NEVER put his hands on Wahoo, unless he wants a real fight, and his rant continues as Caudle says we’re out of time …
