The year was 1962 and AWA co-owner, Promoter and World Heavyweight Champion Verne Gagne and his business partner Wally Carbo were at an impasse. Carbo wanted to take the focus of the promotion away from Verne Gagne, while Gagne’s ego would not let that. In November of 1962 Verne Gagne announced that he would be forming his own wrestling promotion to be run out of Minnesota, aptly titled the Minnesota Championship Wrestling to open in 1963.
Many if not most of the AWA wrestlers decided to follow Verne Gagne to the MCW and the promotion looked very strong heading into the first show in 1963. This is the history of Verne Gagne and MCW as they would challenge the wrestling world against the WWWF which is run by Vince McMahon and Toots Mandt and the NWA.
Diary notes/rules
1. Verne Gagne can never wrestle outside of the MCW. If he does not re-sign his contract he will not be eligible to return to action for one year. 2. All no-shows, quitting and non-re-signings will be respected. 3. WWWF will be run simultaneously to create a title history / competitor. 4. Anyone leaves MCW will not be eligible to return for a year assuming that they do not have a contract with WWWF. 5. Outside of the original rosters all signings will be subject to TNM7 rules (ie they don’t want to sign, MCW or WWWF cannot force a signing)
OOC Notes:
- I have written already four years of cards as I wanted to get far enough ahead in the action to ensure that the circuit won’t fold after a month or so. I won’t post them all quickly, rather, I want to stay a few years ahead as to not lose the momentum. - With the success of GCW (so my apologies for using the same era as you did) and my interest in the AWA period I decided to run this circuit. There will be backstage notes throughout the circuit that impact the MCW. - WWWF is just 12 cards a year simmed that are all unbooked. Just to create a title lineage / competition so MCW can’t just get all the wrestlers at once. - I am using Ryan’s wrestler debut list he sent me a couple of years ago.

Match observations:
To crown the first ever MCW World Champion, the tournament was marred by injuries and strange occurances. Fritz and Waldo Von Erich (brothers) were forced to do battle in the first round, however they quickly ended the fight allowing Fritz to move on fresh.
Also in the first round, Wahoo McDaniel injured his left knee in his match with Blackjack Lanza and McDaniel was unable to make it back into the ring and was counted out. After the match it was determined that he would be out of action for three months.
The final four was set as Verne Gagne took on The Crusher and Dick the Brusier took on Nick Bockwinkel. Gagne beat the Crusher and Dick the Bruiser beat Bockwinkel setting up an unlikely finals of Gagne and Dick the Bruiser.
The finals was even more shocking as early in the match Dick the Bruiser suffered a broken leg that quickly Gagne pinned him ending the match but the big story was the gruesome broken leg that wil have Dick The Bruiser out of action for around six months.

They quickly ended the fight by agreeing to let Waldo pass out in the Iron Claw? Or Fritz destroyed him in short order?
Tough luck on the injuries. Verne had to win the title, only thing that made sense, but sucks that it happened due to a fractured leg.

Happy to see this project. Should be fun. Mostly because like Verne Gagne, I like when my ego is stroked too. So are you also running cards/writing out WWWF, or is it a circuit that's in the cosmos like AWA or Japan is in the GCW Universe? And Gagne was clearly the first champion. Not shocking, but the right call to establish how this is all going to work. The injuries are rough though. If you're going to have injury problems, early is the right time, considering a real hierarchy hasn't been established yet. Looking forward to this, and cool you have so many cards in the bag ready to go. Glad to see you posting again.

RE: WWWF - I won't be writing the cards, but I am actually running them unbooked and keeping track of title changes, etc, just to have some history.
Re: Von Erich's - Basically Waldo let Fritz win so he was fresh for the next round.

1/26/1963: Live Event @ Duluth, MN
Interview: Verne Gagne and The Crusher
Verne Gagne came to the ring for his MCW World Heavyweight Championship presentation and the crowd cheer as he made his way to the ring. As he accepted the title belt from MCW president Stanley Blackburn, Gagne thanked the fans and said it was a bit bittersweet due to the way that the finals ended with Dick the Bruiser being injured and said that when he is healthy enough he would give him a title shot.
This brought out to the ring, the partner of Dick the Brusier, The Crusher. The Crusher said that he doesn't want to wait that long to get his hands on Gagne. The Crusher said the way he won was cowardly and the match should have been stopped immediately. The Crusher calls him a false champion and that he will be the one to take it from him.
[Round 1]: Stan Stasiak and Larry Hennig defeated Blackjack Lanza and Dr. Jerry Graham when Stan Stasiak made Dr. J. Graham submit to a double reverse chinlock in 0:04:09. Rating: *

Verne Gagne defeated Tor Kamata when Tor Kamata passed out in the Gagne Sleeper in 0:24:58. Rating: *** (Verne Gagne retained the MCW World Heavyweight Championship.)
Card rating: * 3/4
Match observations:
The second MCW show had the World Tag Team Titles Tournament up for grabs. Due to injuries of Dick the Bruiser and Wahoo McDaniel, The Crusher teamed up with Dory Funk Jr. and Jay Strongbow teamed up with Spiros Arion.
The Von Erichs beat the Gladiators (Larry Hennig and Stan Stasiak) in one semi and Jay Strongbow and Spiros Arion beat Butcher Vachon and Baron Mikel in the second setting up a great finals.
In what might be considered an upset, Jay Strongbow and Spiros Arion won the MCW World Tag Team gold in a solid contest. Two men who have never team before won and the crowd cheered them.
The Main event of the evening was Verne Gagne making his first defense of the MCW World Title as he took on Tor Kamata (the devious wrestler for Japan). Gagne retained the title but one has to wonder about The Crusher who made it known early on that he wants revenge on Mr. Gagne.

Ah, makeshift teams based on injuries. Strongbow/Arion is a weird team, but we'll see what kind of run they can have. Surprised the titles didn't go on a more established team.

Card rating: *** 1/2
Match observations:
The Gladiators of Larry Hennig and Stan Stasiak took on Ellis and Woods and Ellis and Woods were clearly overmatch against the solid strength and team work of the Gladiators.
Nick Bockwinkel is the first even MCW Mid-West Champion as he outlasted 14 other men to win the battle royal, last eliminating Blackhjack Lanza. It was announced after the match that on March 2 in St. Paul, Bockwinkel will make his first defense against Blackjack Lanza!
Tag Team main event as The Crusher chose Tor Kamata as his partner and Verne Gagne had 1/2 of the World Tag Team Champions, Spiros Arion as his partner. Great tag team action as The Crusher was able to get the win via a pinfall over Arion and The Crusher told Gagne that he wants the belt again and its only a matter of time before the belt is his.

Good main event feud already going with Crusher out for revenge of his fallen partner. Should be a nice 1-on-1 match when he faces off with Gagne.
A good number of challengers already for the tag champs. Gladiators look like a solid team and Von Erichs have some pedigree as well.

Crusher is going to have to keep treading water like this until Bruiser is back. He's doing a pretty good job so far.

I actually like Crusher going after Gagne until Bruiser comes back. Gagne is not dropping the title for a long while, but it is a clever way of using Crusher right now.
Bockwinkel is a fine first secondary champ.

Card rating: ***
Match observations:
The Gladiators won another match and must be moving up the ranks to get a title shot at the title belts.
Hiro Matsuda and Dory Funk did battle in the third contest. This match got strange as Tor Kamata and Gary Hart came to the ring during the match. It was unclear why they were out here but it soon became apparent as Hiro tossed Funk to the outside and as he distracted the official Tor Kamata hit him with a piledriver on the concrete causing the countout. After the match Gary Hart shook the hand of Hiro signalling that he is now in Hart's fold.
Verne Gagne took on Dr. Jerry Graham in another title match. The Crusher came down and brought a chair to the ring and sat down watching the match. Gagne got the win as The Crusher looked on and clapped and walked away after the match as Gagne watched.
In what was the match of the night, Blackjack Lanza took on Nick Bockwinkel in a great match for the Mid-West Championship. During the match the crowd got behind Lanza (who is known as a rule breaker) as his heart showed in the match. He had several nearfalls but in the end Bockwinkel used a low blow and then his patented Piledriver for the win.
In the main event of the evening Jay Strongbow and Spiros Arion took on Butcher Vachon and Baron Mikel for the World Tag Team Titles. The champions retained in a tough match, but it doesn't get any easier for them as they take on the Von Erichs in Green Bay!

Hart said that he has put together two of the toughest wrestlers from the Orient, let's call them the Fury of the Orient. He says Dory Funk Jr. was the first man in a long line who are going to find out how tough these men out.
Dory Funk Jr. hit the ring and said that he wants to start that again tonight and says that Stanley Blackburn has made the match, Hiro and Tor against Dory Funk Jr. and VERNE GAGNE.
Gary Hart doesn't seem to be too happy about that but tonight's main event is made.

Card rating: ** 1/2
Match observations:
Blackjack Lanza quickly got back on the winning track against a local from green bay.
Tag team titles were on the line as the champions took on The Von Erichs. The match ended in a double countout and nothing is settled here.
Since the last show The Gladiators have made it known that they believe they are the toughest team in Minnesota Championship Wrestling. Apparently that didn't sit well with the Von Erichs who interfered in their match. The match Duluth will be the Gladiators taking on The Von Erichs.
The Crusher got an impressive win in a greast match with Pedro Morales. The Crusher got the win after 42 hard fought minutes. He is definately showing that he deserves a shot at Verne Gagne.
Main event time as Gagne and Funk took on the Fury from the Orient. This was a tough match for all four but in the end it was THE CRUSHER who made his presence felt again as he interfered causing the DQ and assisted Hart and his charges beating down of Funk and Gagne. This lead to the Tag Team champions of JAY STRONGBOW and SPIROS ARION hitting the ring for the save. Duluth got another match announced after the show as the Fury From the Orient and The Crusher will take on Gagne, Funk and Arion!

Interview: Wahoo McDaniel is back
Wahoo McDaniels heads to the ring and the crowd cheers as he is back from an injury sustained in January. He gets to the ring and says he wants the World Tag Team Champions to come to the ring.
With that the current champions of Chief Jay Strongbow and Spiros Arion head to the ring. The crowd cheers. It should be noted that Strongbow and McDaniel were entered into the tournament.
They enter the ring and McDaniel congratulates them on the titles and says he hopes that now that he is back in action that Spiros will do the honourable thing and forfeit his World Tag Team Title belt over to him as he was his replacement. This catches the champions off guard and Spiros quickly says that Wahoo must have been disappointed to be injured but when Strongbow asked him to team with him they earned these title belts.
Wahoo tells Jay that they have a long history and says that what's right is right. Wahoo says that if he doesn't get what he deserves there will be trouble and leaves the ring.
The Gladiators (Larry Hennig and Stan Stasiak) and Fritz Von Erich and Waldo Von Erich battled to a double countout in 0:24:36. Rating: * 1/4

Fury from the Orient (Hiro Matsuda and Tor Kamata) and The Crusher defeated Verne Gagne, Dory Funk Jr. and Spiros Arion when Crusher pinned Arion with the Bolo Punch in 0:25:30. Rating: *** [Wahoo McDaniel interfered against Spiros Arion.]
Card rating: ***
Match observations:
The first match of the night was The Gladiators and The Von Erichs doing battle in a tag team contest. Both teams want a shot at the champions but as of right now neither is in a position to gain that and a win would go along way. They fought to a double countout and a rematch was signed for the big April show in Minneapolis.
Blackjack Lanza did battle with Dr. Jerry Graham. Lanza has been getting a little bit of a following and the fans were behind him more in this match. He got the win and wants another shot at Bockwinkel.
Wahoo McDaniel's return match was a domination for him as he took down Mark Lewin. It should be noted that McDaniel looked a bit meaner in this match, maybe a sign that he was not happy with what happened earlier in the show.
As Miguel Perez was going to enter ring for a match against Nick Bockwinkel. Nick came out to the ring and said that Perez was in no shape to wrestle and MCW officials confirmed that he was attacked in the back and Bockwinkel sweared it wasn't him. Johnny Weaver took his place but Bockwinkel was too much. After the match Nick hit a second piledriver on Weaver and was going for a third when BLACKJACK LANZA hit the ring and he bailed.
Big main event six man tag team match. Gary Hart led his charges out to the ring and The Crusher came out after. The babyfaces took control early in this hot contest, but WAHOO MCDANIEL came down to the ring and would distract Spiros Arion and that was enough for The Crusher to hit the Bolo Punch for the win. Spiros was not happy and went at McDaniel.
Afterwards it was announced that Verne Gagne will defend his World Heavyweight crown later this month against The Crusher!
