10/13/85 – UPW Fury Hour (Taped: 10/7/85) Showboat Sports Pavilion at the Showboat Hotel and Casino – Las Vegas, NV
THIS IS THE FURY HOUR!
The neon colors of “U P W” hit the airwaves to a triumphal score of horns and synth and a montage of various established and marginal wrestling talents hitting each other with an array of high impact maneuvers to painfully obvious canned crowd noise. A gruff voice declared, “UPW! Universal Pro Wrestling! This is…the Fury Hour!” The shot cut to various Las Vegas sights before panning across the lights of Sin City at night and dissolving to the half-empty Showboat Sports Pavilion and broadcast booth.
“THE LIVING LEGEND” AND “THE CAPTAIN” WELCOME YOU TO UNIVERSAL PRO WRESTLING
Former multi-time world champion, “The Living Legend” Bruno Sammartino was seated next to a somewhat disheveled looking man in a Hawaiian shirt, a double-breasted blue blazer with large gold buttons, aviator sunglasses and a white yacht captain’s hat. He introduced himself as “The Captain” Carl Florida, the voice and promoter of Universal Pro Wrestling. Carl Florida said the most exciting wrestling talent in the world had been assembled in UPW, and that UPW and the Fury Hour would be bringing electricity to SportsChannel America each and every week with the best professional wrestling in the world today.
Sammartino and Florida briefly discussed some of the talent they would be showcasing: established champions like “King Kong” Bruiser Brody and Blackjack Mulligan, but also up and comers like the Blade Runners and American Starship, two impressive young tag teams in action tonight. And UPW would also feature one of the most famous stars in all of wrestling…”SUPERFLY” JIMMY SNUKA! Florida threw it backstage where Snuka was waiting.
THE SUPERFLY HAS LANDED
Former world champion “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka was with UPW’s backstage correspondent, David McLane. Snuka’s eyes were wide with energy and intensity as he explained that the Superfly had landed in Universal Pro Wrestling because he wanted to fight the best of the best, and that he’d make quick work of any opponents until he had gold around his waist. He said he was going to go out there tonight and give the fans a show they would never forget.
MATCH #1 "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka vs. Gus Torres
The first match in UPW history kicked off in front of the somewhat energetic crowd of a few hundred in the dimly lit Showboat Sports Pavilion. Snuka roared to the crowd in his native Samoan, rallying them to his side as he put on an exhibition against Gus Torres. Snuka, who moved a little frantically and seemingly without direction at times, showed off his aerial moves and finished Torres with the always impressive Superfly Splash.
Jimmy Snuka pinned Gus Torres with the Superfly Splash in 0:03:03. Rating: 1/4*
THE UPW WORLD TITLE AND BLACKJACK BRAWL
We returned to the booth, where Carl Florida announced that in just under two months UPW will be holding a huge show called Blackjack Brawl at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas that would air live at primetime on SportsChannel America on December 6th. Florida also announced that the show would feature the finals of a tournament to crown the first ever UPW World Champion. The tournament would feature names like Jimmy Snuka, Bruiser Brody, Blackjack Mulligan, and, further, would be beginning tonight!
MATCH #2 UPW World Title Tournament First Round “Mad Dog” Buzz Sawyer vs. “Leaping” Lanny Poffo
The first two participants in the UPW World Title Tournament had both received national exposure in the National Wrestling Federation, the rough-and-tumble “Mad Dog” Buzz Sawyer and the athletic “Leaping” Lanny Poffo. Sawyer started off strong, working Poffo over with a series of headlocks, forearm, fists and insults, but Poffo bounced back with a pinpoint dropkick and a couple of quick, agile maneuvers. Poffo had the crowd behind him and looked to have the match won, but Sawyer deviously removed one of the turnbuckle pads. As referee Robarb Jones went to repair, the Mad Dog pulled a pair of brass knuckles from his tights and floored Poffo with a big right hand.
[UPW World Title Tournament - First Round]: Buzz Sawyer pinned Lanny Poffo after hitting him with the brass knuckles in 0:06:45. Rating: ***
Florida called the officiating a travesty, but Sammartino noted that, fair or not, when you step between the ropes you have to be ready for all of your opponent’s tricks. Florida said he couldn’t disagree, then introduced the next piece, a video package for perhaps the most imposing tag team ever: the Blade Runners.
THE FUTURE IS NOW
A video package showed two extremely muscular men in long black tights with one red star painted over each of their left eyes working out in a sleek-looking gym. The men lifted and tossed around massive weights while an energetic, gruff voice spoke about how the Blade Runners, the greatest tag team in the history of wrestling, past and future, is coming to Universal Pro Wrestling. The camera then cut to an almost military-style office, where an attractive, svelte-but-muscular blonde in olive fatigues was smoking a cigar while leaning against a large wooden desk. Rick Bassman, the voice from the narration and the Blade Runners’ manager, who wore a leather jacket and a goatee to go along with his shaved head, stood next to her. Bassman said “The Russian Assassin” Ninotchka, the woman next to him, brought the Blade Runners to him and asked Bassman to introduce them to the American public, and he couldn’t think of a better spot than Sin City itself. He said together they’ve made the Blade Runners remorseless killing machines that would take the wrestling world by storm. Ninotchka blew a large smoke ring and cryptically said something in Russian.
MATCH #3 The Blade Runners (w/ Rick Bassman & “The Russian Assassin” Ninotchka) vs. Mike Jackson & Sammy Hall
Neither Florida nor Sammartino could get over how huge and muscular the Blade Runners were. Introduced from Parts Unknown, Florida explained that the two men—Blade Runner Rock and Blade Runner Sting—remained a mystery to everyone in UPW. Florida also mentioned how little was known about the self-proclaimed Russian Assassin, their ringside enforcer. Sammartino said he wouldn’t mind her putting him in a headlock. Florida did note that Bassman was clearly a pompous windbag as he shouted and yelled instructions and encouragement to the Blade Runners all throughout the match via a megaphone, of all devices. Rock and Sting dominated their unlucky opposition with a series of rough but impressive power maneuvers. And though it was entirely unnecessary, even Bassman and Ninotchka got involved: Bassman whacked poor Sammy Hall with his megaphone after Blade Runner Rock gorilla pressed the latter out of the ring, and Ninotchka used the ropes to choke a prone Mike Jackson. Rock picked up Jackson in a bearhug while Blade Runner Sting bounced off the ropes with a diving clothesline, nearly decapitating him. The pinfall was academic.
The Blade Runners (Blade Runner Rock and Blade Runner Sting) defeated Mike Jackson and Sammy Hall when Sting pinned M. Jackson after the Electric Execution in 0:03:58. Rating: 1/4* [Rick Bassman interfered against Sammy Hall.] [Ninotchka interfered against Mike Jackson.]
THE GAMBLIN’ MAN IS IN SIN CITY
After noting how dominating the Blade Runners looked in their debut match, Florida directed everyone’s attention to the entranceway of the Showboat Pavilion where David McLane stood with Blackjack Mulligan. The towering Mulligan was wearing a grey suit, a rhinestone bolo tie, sunglasses, and had his hair slicked and his moustache waxed. Mulligan told the fans to shut up because he didn’t pay to listen to them, they paid to listen to him. Mulligan said he’s a gamblin’ man so Las Vegas is a natural place for him to wrestle. He also said he’s here for dollars and gold, and that he intends on squashing anyone who gets in his way like a bug. Mulligan called McLane a runt and spat chewing tobacco on the arena floor before walking off.
MATCH #4 American Starship (w/ Tina Ferrari) vs. Bruce Dean & Rick Renslow
Loud rock music played as American Starship and Tina Ferrari made their way to the ring. Florida and Sammartino explained that this was another exciting young team making its debut tonight at the Fury Hour. The tall and muscular Starship Coyote and Starship Eagle both took time slapping hands with the fans at ringside before holding the ropes open for their manager, the young and athletic Tina Ferrari. Sammartino called Ferrari the all-American girl-next-door. Coyote (who some fans may have recognized from the AWA and NWF as “Big” Scott Hall) and Eagle ripped their neon tank tops off to the excitement of the female fans in attendance as the bell rung. The two quickly took control of the match, hitting their opponents with a series of power moves. Dean and Renslow tried to double-team the American Starship out of desperation, but Coyote brought Dean thundering back to the mat with a belly-to-back superplex while Eagle dropped Renslow with a devastating power bomb for the three count.
Tina Ferrari jumped around the ring in celebration afterwards as Starship Coyote and Starship Eagle posed for the Las Vegas fans. Carl Florida was particularly excited, proclaiming "IT'S THE AMERICAN STAAAAAARRRSSSHHHIIIPPPP!!!!"
American Starship (Starship Coyote and Starship Eagle) defeated Bruce Dean and Rick Renslow when Eagle pinned R. Renslow with the Starship Bomb in 0:04:26. Rating: 1/2*
Coming back from a commercial, the Captain and Sammartino ran down next week’s Fury Hour. They said Bruiser Brody and Norvell Austin and Koko Ware of the Pretty Young Things would all be in action. They also said that the Superfly, Jimmy Snuka, would be facing Black Bart in the first round of the UPW World Title Tournament, and that Blackjack Mulligan would be taking on “Cowboy” Scott Casey in the same. But first, Blackjack Mulligan was in action in tonight’s final match!
MATCH #5 “The Gamblin’ Man” Blackjack Mulligan vs. Mike Fever
Blackjack Mulligan seems to have quite the chip on his shoulder nowadays, jawing and threatening the fans all the way down to the ring. Blackjack attacked Mike Fever before the bell had even rung, viciously laying into Fever with forearms to the back and knees to the gut. Mulligan slammed Fever to the mat with authority a few times before picking him up for the Blackjack Claw. Fever quickly succumbed and referee Nacho Barrera called for the bell.
Blackjack Mulligan defeated Mike Fever when M. Fever passed out in the Blackjack Claw in 0:02:44. Rating: 1/4*
Blackjack Mulligan had won the match, but he wanted to make a statement. He held the Claw until the referee threatened him with reversing the decision. Blackjack relinquished his grip…then shoved the referee and began putting the boots to Fever! Suddenly, Jimmy Snuka came tearing down the aisle! Snuka slid into the ring and hit Blackjack with a dropkick that knocked Mulligan through the ropes and to the outside! Mulligan yelled and threatened Snuka, but Snuka simply invited Mulligan to get in the ring and settle it like a man. Mulligan carefully paced around the ring as Carl Florida entreated everyone to tune in next week for the FURY HOUR!
Match observations:
It's the debut episode of the Fury Hour! Universal Pro Wrestling and the Fury Hour return to the SportsChannel America family of cable networks next week with more electric wrestling action, courtesy of "The Captain" Carl Florida!

Yes!! We need a backstory though!
Great intro and from the canned crowd noise to the half-empty Showboat Sports Pavilion this already sounds like a HIGHLY entertaining product.
Roster is looking good and putting a former World Champion in Jimmy Snuka in the first match is a great decision.
Sawyer and Poffo were two guys I was hoping hadn't seen their last days in the Universe, especially Sawyer because he didn't get to have any real memorable moments. They put on a surprisingly good match here.
Blade Runners! We're actually not too far off from both BR Rock and BR Sting really breaking out into their own but it's going to be a ton of fun following them as they unintentionally hurt everyone in their early careers.
Every promotion needs a good old cowboy and Blackjack Mulligan is a great choice. I'd peg him, as close to retiring as he is, a top contender in the tournament.
I'm googling some unfamiliar names as I go along and it appears GLOW is pretty well represented on your roster. I had no idea Ivory was around in '85. Starship Coyote and Eagle are such goofy names but they fit right in here.
Nice way to end your first Fury Hour. Snuka comes out to save his great friend Mike Fever to build up your first, and excellent I might add, angle between Snuka and Mulligan.
I'm already looking forward to the next Fury Hour!

And here... we... GO!
I love that although there's some intentional silliness here on your part (which this universe could use more of), Carl Florida takes it all VERY seriously. You can tell he thinks this is cutting edge, top flight, already going to dethrone GCW and NWF stuff, which will make this all the more entertaining as time goes on.
Snuka is a good first star to showcase, as he's not far off from main eventing Super Cade. Sure, he's probably drugged out of his gourd, but most fans at home don't know that.
Makes sense to do a title tournament heading into your first big show. It also shows how delusional Florida is by declaring this a World Title already. Small things like that really help paint a picture.
I think Sawyer will get some love here in UPW. I also think Poffo is going to be a bit of a whipping boy until he finds footing as The Genius later in this universe. I just think his run with Raymond Rougeau is a bit too far in the past for most fans to remember right now. Sawyer winning was the right choice here.
The best tag team is wrestling history EVER is here! You probably won't have Sting and Warrior all that long, so I am excited to see what crazy shenanigans they get into in the meantime.
Mulligan fits right in here too - his name is Blackjack, after all. Like Russ said, I think Mulligan is an early favorite for the World Title.
I would have never guessed American Starship would make this universe. Hall and Spivey individually? Sure, but not this team. Super stoked about it. That means later on, wrestlers feuding with Hall will be able to make shoot comments about his Coyote days.
Mulligan/Snuka are probably your two biggest stars on paper right now, so makes sense to lock them up right off the bat to stir up interest. Matches will be ugly, but think it can have some decent heat to it.
Good first show - welcome aboard!

Backstory:
From the October 16, 1985 edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter:
...Finally, several of you have written me asking about something called "Universal Pro Wrestling." I hadn't addressed this potential organization before because now that pro wrestling is the hot new popular thing and even your grandma knows who Hulk Hogan and King Kong Bundy are, there's a new money mark or fly-by-night carny with a new promotion practically every month. Well, ask no more, because I finally have some concrete details regarding this shadowy and possibly legitimate promotion:
UPW, as it's called, is headed up by someone named Carl Florida. I couldn't find out much about this guy, other than that he's known to be an eccentric personality, has been involved in a bunch of different businesses and various entertainment promotions, has filed for bankruptcy at least twice (and that's just in California where I looked!) and has at least one dropped charge for possession of cocaine. So in other words, pretty run-of-the-mill for a wrestling promoter. I've seen Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Miami and New York listed as places of birth.
But what makes him interesting here, and perhaps more than just another carny capitalizing on the "wrestlemania" sweeping the nation (though he definitely seems to be that too), are the resources he's bringing to bear in his latest effort. As we all know, cable is king, and new cable channels need programming. Florida has partnered with SportsChannel America, a relatively new cable syndicate with networks in some major markets, to provide an hour of television every week and the occasional live special. It won't touch the size of GCW's syndication package or NWF's reach on Turner and will probably be in a graveyard slot, but it's real. Everyone knows television and wrestling are decades old friends, so it's no surprise that new cable networks would quickly gobble up wrestling programming.
The UPW also apparently has some serious financial backing. Either that or Mr. Florida is planning on bouncing checks for the next few months. I've heard names like Jimmy Snuka, Bruiser Brody, Don Muraco, Terry Funk and even Bruno Sammartino thrown around. These guys don't work cheap. If even a few of these guys are signed, Florida is going to need serious money to pay the bills. I don't know if he's got it or SportsChannel is fronting it or he has some silent investors, but if I'm the wrestlers (and the ring crew and the arena bookers...) I don't know that I'm taking out that mortgage quite yet.
Word has it they're going to be based out of Las Vegas or Los Angeles. We'll see if they make it in front of the cameras.
Addendum:
The first UPW TV taping took place just before this edition went to print. I don't have the time or space for a full rundown, but according to one correspondent I talked to on the phone, it was an absolute MARATHON. And I don't say that in the "sense of accomplishment when you're done" kind of way. Apparently the Showboat Pavilion (where the AWA used to make stops in Vegas) hosted 15-20 matches, most of which were quick squashes, in front of a heavily papered crowd of a couple hundred. All of the talent is either coked up, on 'roids or both. Actual wrestlers include Jimmy Snuka (who looks to be up to the same old tricks that got him fired from GCW), Bruiser Brody (surprised he actually showed up...) and Kevin Sullivan's strange cult faction. I guess Sullivan is worried about being blamed for Florida tanking now that Dusty is permanently gone and doesn't want to get saddled with that reputation. Scott Hall is also in and stiff as ever. The former Freedom Fighters from Memphis, Rock and Flash, are also in and apparently almost killed a jobber in their first match. Word has it a bunch of the wrestlers were detained by the police after trashing the club at an unnamed casino the night of the taping. Also, lots of ladies on TV too. This should be interesting to follow.

And then there were four! Seriously, I wish I knew more about vintage wrestling so that I could join this fabulous universe.
I get a kind of OVW feeling when I read the first card. It's probably lower quality than GCW and NWF, and there's a somewhat goofy character on the mic.
Interesting that the Observer piece you wrote degraded the product. Sullivan being there is a plus for me. This universe needed Sullivan. Maybe UPW will host the Dungeon of Doom eventually?
It's going to be challenging for you four to schedule shows chronologically with four promotions, but it's also going to be challenging for us, the fans!
Good luck!

All hail Captain Carl! This should be good fun!
If Bruno's here does that mean David is too? That might be a condition of Bruno being involved. I'll post some more feedback soon.

Hot opening and I'm already stoked to see these new tag teams.
And Snuka gets the first match and squash in UPW history. He might slowly make his way back to NWF or GCW, but this is a perfect setting for him right now. I could easily see him becoming the top star of the company.
Whoa. Been awhile since we've seen Buzz Sawyer or Lanny Poffo. Poffo would be fine as part of a tag team, but don't see him doing much in singles. Happy that Buzz might get a better run than he got in the NWF.
The Blade Runners had a fun promo to debut them, and looked impressive in their match. A little chaotic but that's exactly the type of match Rock and Blade should be involved in at this point.
American Starship is so goofy, but I could see them picking up fans quickly. Hall was over his head in the NWF, but this will allow him ample time to get his feet wet. I am a huge fan of Spivey so hope he does well here.
Really happy you ended the first card with the beginning of a feud. Mulligan/Snuka is a good way to start off UPW, and I could easily see it being the finals of your tournament to crown the first UPW World Champion.
Fun debut show. Can't wait to read more. Looks like it is Ryan and then you/me (with two).

Liked the Observer piece. Gives some answers, and also brings up the legit questions people have about how this promotion sprang out of nowhere and got a cable slot (even if it is a shitty one).

Well that was certainly unexpected, in a variety of ways!
If WWA is the respectable minor promotion, UPW is anything but. Spinal Tap should play at the UPW's supershows because this organization is clearly trying to crank the volume up to 11! Kevin Sullivan's evil antics will be perfectly at home here. I smell the GCWverse's equivilent to ECW right here and it smells glorious.
I wonder if WWA and UPW will get into some kind of west coast turf war?

10/20/85 – UPW Fury Hour (Taped: 10/7/85) Showboat Sports Pavilion at the Showboat Hotel and Casino – Las Vegas, NV
THIS IS THE FURY HOUR!
“The Captain” Carl Florida, still in his yachtsman regalia, and “The Living Legend” Bruno Sammartino, more conservatively adorned in a double-breasted ecru suit, welcomed everyone to tonight’s edition of the Fury Hour from Las Vegas! The Captain said Bruiser Brody, Blackjack Mulligan and the “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka would all be in action tonight, with the latter two competing in two more matches in the UPW World Title Tournament! Also, Florida promised an update on the Blackjack Brawl. But first, Florida said that “The Gamblin’ Man,” Blackjack Mulligan, was backstage with David McLane.
ALL BETS ARE OFF FOR JIMMY SNUKA
A well-dressed but agitated “Gamblin’ Man” was with UPW correspondent David McLane. McLane wanted to ask Mulligan about his match against Scott Casey in the UPW World Title Tournament tonight, but Mulligan cut McLane off halfway through his first question. Mulligan looked right at the camera and addressed none other than the Superfly himself. Mulligan told Snuka he either had a lot of nerve or was mighty stupid to get involved in Blackjack’s business last week. He said that in Universal Pro Wrestling, Blackjack holds all the cards, and that the Gamblin’ Man was gonna’ smack Snuka right out of his loincloth.
MATCH #1 Tonga Kid vs. Hans De Haas
Florida and Sammartino introduced the Tonga Kid as an exciting high flyer from the Samoan islands and also Jimmy Snuka’s cousin and student. The energetic Tonga Kid made the most of his debut, knocking Hans De Haas to the mat with a series of headbutts and savage kicks. Tonga climbed to the top rope and drilled De Haas with a flying splash in homage to his relative, the Superfly. Florida noted that Tonga was the type of exciting young competitor the UPW has to offer.
Tonga Kid pinned Hans De Haas with the Flying Splash in 0:02:50. Rating: 3/4*
BRUISER BRODY IS HERE TO FIGHT
“King Kong” Bruiser Brody was backstage with David McLane. David McLane asked Brody what it was like to be in Las Vegas and Universal Pro Wrestling. The wild-haired Brody bellowed that he likes a fight, that he goes wherever there’s a good fight promised, and that UPW promised the best fightin’ around. Brody said he wasn’t here for money or fame, he was here to beat people up, starting tonight.
MATCH #2 “King Kong” Bruiser Brody vs. Dennis Stamp
Dennis Stamp laid into Bruiser at the opening bell, trying to knock down the wild animal that is Bruiser Brody. Stamp came off the ropes with a clothesline, but Brody floored his opponent with a vicious elbow. Brody tore into Stamp with a brutal array of hammering fists, thunderous elbows and wild knees. Stamp crumpled to the floor, but Brody didn’t finish it until delivering his famed Bombs Away kneedrop from the turnbuckles. After the match, Brody raised his arms in victory and yelled, riling up the fans in his favor. Sammartino noted that with the wild man Bruiser Brody unleashed, no one in UPW was safe.
Bruiser Brody pinned Dennis Stamp with the Bombs Away in 0:02:34. Rating: DUD
THE COWBOY HAS WORDS FOR THE GAMBLIN’ MAN
David McLane was again backstage, this time with the mustached “Cowboy” Scott Casey and his manager, the fair Sunshine. Casey told McLane in his distinctive drawl that Mulligan doesn’t represent Texas because he’s a liar and a cheat. Casey said he came to Las Vegas and UPW to wrestle matches and win the UPW World Title. Casey told McLane that he was going to hog-tie Blackjack; Sunshine nodded in approval.
MATCH #3 UPW World Title Tournament First Round “The Gamblin’ Man” Blackjack Mulligan vs. “Cowboy” Scott Casey (w/ Sunshine)
The two Texans circled each other menacingly in this UPW World Title Tournament bout, with Blackjack Mulligan hurling insults at Scott Casey. Sunshine shouted encouragement to the Cowboy, leading Blackjack to point his finger in her face and jaw with her. Casey, not one to have his woman disrespected, blindsided Mulligan with a forearm to the crowd’s delight. Casey beat Blackjack from pillar to post before Mulligan recovered with a rake of the eyes. The two eventually tumbled to the outside, where Blackjack wrapped Casey up and rammed him back-first into the steel ringpost. Blackjack dumped Casey to the floor and rolled back into the ring while Sunshine attended to her man. Referee Nacho Barrera was forced to count out the injured Casey as Blackjack stood inside the ring soaking, up the boos.
Florida called Blackjack’s attack on Casey a cheap shot, but Sammartino said all the wrestlers in Universal Pro Wrestling were pulling out all the stops to win the world title. Sammartino acknowledged that Blackjack was dirty, but said that just means you have to be all the more careful around him.
[UPW World Title Tournament - First Round]: Blackjack Mulligan defeated Scott Casey by countout in 0:05:23. Rating: 1/4*
After the bout, Florida and Sammartino previewed next week’s episode of the Fury Hour. They said more exciting competitors would be in action, including the imposing Blade Runners and the debut of “Hollywood” John Tatum. Plus, we’ll hear from Honky Tonk Wayne, “Mad Dog” Buzz Sawyer and other UPW stars. Also next week: the tournament for the UPW Tag Team Titles kicks off, including one of the most electric tag teams in the world today, the PYT Express, who are scheduled to debut only moments from now. The Captain threw it backstage to Norvell Austin and Koko Ware.
THE HARDEST WORKING MEN IN SHOW BUSINESS
The “Pretty Young Things,” Austin and Ware, were with David McLane. Austin and Ware were decked out in red leather jackets and dark sunglasses, with each man wearing a rhinestoned white leather glove on his right hand. Austin and Ware were in a good mood, bouncing around backstage and laughing in anticipation of their debut. Austin and Ware told McLane that the PYT Express was here in Las Vegas for a good time, and that after they won their match tonight they were going to hit the town and play the slots.
MATCH #4 The PYT Express vs. Tony D’amato & Frank Lang
The PYT Express gave the somewhat apathetic crowd a quick burst of energy as they juked and jived to the ring while carrying a funk-blasting boombox. D’amato and Lang looked none too impressed with the dynamic Pretty Young Things, but Austin and Ware demonstrated that they have technical acumen to back up their showmanship, using quick tag team maneuvers to keep control of the match. Austin slammed Lang to the mat with a powerslam before Ware leapt off the top turnbuckle with a splash to close out the bout. Florida exclaimed that the PYT Express was the most exciting tag team in professional wrestling today!
The PYT Express (Norvell Austin and Koko Ware) defeated Tony D’amato and Frank Lang when K. Ware pinned F. Lang after a splash from the top rope in 0:04:00. Rating: *
THE ARMY OF DARKNESS ARRIVES IN SIN CITY
The cameras cut to “The Captain” Carl Florida, who was at the entrance way of the Showboat Pavilion with David McLane. Carl Florida thanked the fans for attending the Fury Hour, and advised that tickets were on sale for the first ever Blackjack Brawl, which would be taking place on December 6 at the MGM Grand Arena! Florida said it would be the most exciting night in the history of wrestling, but before he could continue he was interrupted by a stout, burly figure in a robe and two vivacious but bizarrely-dressed girls!
The robed figure, who had a large pentagram tattoo on his face, dark eye shadow, a chain around his neck and a horn-shaped goatee, told Florida and McLane to stop right there. He said that Universal Pro Wrestling can’t come to their city, Sin City, and not invite the master sinners themselves, the “The Gamesmaster” Kevin Sullivan and the Army of Darkness. As Sullivan spoke, the two women rubbed their hands on a very spooked David McLane in a half-sensual, half-threatening manner. McLane asked who his friends were, and Sullivan replied that the tattooed, mohawked, torn-shirt and spiked-collar wearing “Daughters of Darkness” were The Lock and Luna Vachon, two of the most dangerous women in the world.
Sullivan ripped the microphone from McLane’s hands and poked Florida in the chest, telling him that the Army of Darkness was here this week, and would be here next week, and wouldn’t let the show continue until Florida let them fight. Florida, nervous but defiant and flanked by the two intimidating dark vixens, told Sullivan that if he wanted to compete he should show up at next week’s Fury Hour. Sullivan told him that he’d be there and he’d be bringing the rest of the Army. Sullivan, The Lock and Luna then laughed maniacally before shoving the mic into Florida’s chest, knocking his hat off. Sullivan and company walked back out of the arena as a disgruntled Florida picked up his captain's hat.
MATCH #5 UPW World Title Tournament First Round “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka vs. Black Bart
A perplexed Bruno Sammartino tried to get the broadcast back on track, but a feisty and indignant Carl Florida railed on Kevin Sullivan and the Army of Darkness for having the audacity to interrupt the Fury Hour and put their hands on The Captain! Sammartino, meanwhile, tried to focus on the big match between Jimmy Snuka and Black Bart. Bart, a big brute of a southern brawler, laid into the smaller Snuka, who perked up the crowd with his arrival. Snuka caught Bart coming into the corner with a kick and dropped him with a laser-like clothesline. The crowd exploded as Snuka climbed the turnbuckles looking for the Superfly Splash, but as he did so Blackjack Mulligan came jogging down the aisle with a COWBELL, of all things, in hand!
Snuka pointed at Mulligan, but then delivered the big splash to Bart! Blackjack climbed up on the ring apron, but before he could step in Snuka again caught Mulligan upside the head with a dropkick! Mulligan fell to the floor as Black Bart recovered, but a fast and furious Jimmy Snuka bounced back with a vicious savate kick that knocked Bart’s block off! Snuka covered for the pin and quickly escaped as Mulligan came charging in with the cowbell like an angry bull. A furious Mulligan stomped around the ring while referee Robarb Jones raised Snuka’s arm on the outside!
[UPW World Title Tournament - First Round]: Jimmy Snuka pinned Black Bart after a savate kick in 0:05:27. Rating: * 1/4 [Blackjack Mulligan interfered against Jimmy Snuka.]
Snuka was one step closer to the UPW World Title! As Mulligan fumed in the ring and Snuka mocked him from the outside, Carl Florida said goodbye from Universal Pro Wrestling and the FURY HOUR!
Match observations:
Oh my! Universal Pro Wrestling and the Fury Hour return next week to SportsChannel America with more electric wrestling action, more Army of Darkness, and more Carl Florida!

I love the nickname "Gamblin' Man." Blackjack Mulligan is going to be one of those names that really is helped by there being another circuit involved in this Universe. Didn't see a whole lot of Tonga Kid back in the day. Wonder if he'll eventually be teaming with Snuka? Don't see a whole lot names on the UPW roster that will be able to keep up with Bruiser Brody. Fresh off his GCW run, I'm sure he's over like crazy right now. I'm glad Casey came to the UPW to wrestle matches. Mulligan gets the obvious win. He is so much fun to read. The PYT Express fit right in with the UPW. Good to sweet Sweet Brown Sugar get some air time since his departure after the New Wave. Sullivan and his group make their long awaited debut in the Universe. Great job with the creepy feel of it. It's too bad I have Woman or she'd fit in perfectly here. Can't wait to see what you do with Sullivan and his group. Thought you might go for the swerve and have Mulligan help eliminate Snuka from the tournament. Glad you didn't go that route as I think your biggest names should be competing for the title. Another good show. This has such a unique feel to it. Always leaves me wanting to read more.

FWIW I think "The Pretty Young Things" would be a much better name than "The PYT Express" but I guess "The [fill-in-the-blank] Express" was just a thing in the 80s for tag teams.
I second what the first Josh said: UPW has a unique feel.
I could see Bruiser Brody feuding with Kevin Sullivan just because they're the two craziest brawlers in town.

Like Josh, "Gamblin' Man" is a cool nickname, and fits in perfectly in Vegas. The feud with Snuka is exactly the right feud to kick off this fledgling promotion.
For whatever reason, Tonga Kid barely registers on my wrestling knowledge radar, other than knowing the name. Seems like a fun high-flier with a lot of upside though.
Going to be tough for anyone on your roster to stand tall against Brody.
Well, Brody dominates that match. But at least Dennis Stamp got booked!
Casey talks a good game, but don't see him getting past the Gamblin' Man.
Mulligan wins as expected, but Casey didn't look bad in the loss. He got a lot of offense in, and a mistake cost him. Helps build Casey as someone who could be a threat, and Mulligan as a jerk.
The Pretty Young Things are a bit silly, but 1980s silly is good. Should have a good run in UPW before Koko moves on to greener pastures.
Still amazing to me it took this long for Kevin Sullivan to make an appearance in the Universe. He should be a lot of fun, as it's a completely different kind of character than we've seen before. I agree a feud with Brody would be money.
Mulligan predictably interferes, but can't eliminate Snuka. Snuka vs. Mulligan pretty much has to be your final, I think.
Good show. I'm up!

Durr. Boy, do I feel like an idiot. I should know that. Loved Tama. EDIT: Speaking of which, I'm going to have to use some Islanders before long. Maybe I can make the first steal of the Universe go against both Russ and Jeff.

I'm digging Blackjack's gimmick here. He's looking like the man to beat in the tournament.
Tonga Kid gets a good rub right off the bat from the mention of being related to Snuka.
UPW would be a great place for Snuka and Brody to finally team up in this Universe. I'll just assume they've teamed in Japan already though.
Not a very impressive showing by Scott Casey but we're just getting started here.
PYT Express is great! They'll surely be mismatched against teams like the Blade Runners and American Starship though.
Awesome intro for Sullivan. He's going to do great things here and possibly beyond.
You're building up for Mulligan and Snuka nicely. It may not be pretty when they meet but it's truely something I'm looking forward to.
UPW is off to an excellent start!

Wohoo! Finally, Kevin Sullivan is in the universe. The next exciting question is who gets to have Sullivan and Benoit brawl in the bathroom.

Rey thats one of the most interesting aspects of this universe. If Kevin Sullivan and Woman don't cross paths in the same promotion, they never get married, Benoit never steals her. And maybe Benoit marries another valet that meets the same unfortunate end as Nancy.

10/27/85 – UPW Fury Hour (Taped: 10/7/85) Showboat Sports Pavilion at the Showboat Hotel and Casino – Las Vegas, NV
THIS IS THE FURY HOUR!
“The Captain” Carl Florida welcomed everyone to another electric hour of Universal Pro Wrestling on SportsChannel America! The Captain was wearing his familiar captain’s outfit and with him was “The Living Legend” Bruno Sammartino, dressed in a dark green suit with lapels that had the wingspan of an exotic bird. Florida said the PYT Express, Koko Ware and Norvell Austin, and the Blade Runners would all be in action tonight, plus “Hollywood” John Tatum would be making his debut. Florida also announced the beginning of a tournament to crown the first ever UPW Tag Team Champions! Florida had more to say, but before he could continue the broadcast booth was suddenly and rudely invaded by “The Gamesmaster” Kevin Sullivan and his Army of Darkness!
PUTTING THE SIN IN SIN CITY
The stout and demonic Kevin Sullivan was joined by his femme fatales from last week plus two new strange faces. Sullivan grabbed the microphone from a defiant Carl Florida as The Lock and Luna cornered and aggressively pawed at a flummoxed Sammartino. Sullivan said he warned Florida last week; there would be no wrestling in the Sin City without the original sinners themselves, the Army of Darkness. Sullivan introduced his “acolytes,” the erratic, painted, tongue-speaking Great Kabuki and the purple-robed Purple Haze. Sullivan said nothing would happen in UPW without their permission, no matter what a skinny punk like Carl Florida or a has-been like Bruno Sammartino had to say about it (Bruno seemed to take especial offense at this). A flustered Florida stood up and told Sullivan that the Army of Darkness had matches against local competitors tonight and that he would have security arrest them if they continued to hold the show hostage. Sullivan laughed maniacally in Florida’s face before lurking away with the rest of his dark entourage.
MATCH #1 “Hollywood” John Tatum (w/ Spanish Red) vs. Mike Fever
UPW returned from a commercial break with Florida and Sammartino still seething at Kevin Sullivan’s interruption and insults. As they recapped the opening segment, “Hollywood” John Tatum and his valet, the fiery Spanish Red, entered the ring. Tatum delayed the beginning of the match in order to show Spanish Red off to the crowd, taunting them for not having a woman as attractive as Red. The bell was eventually rung, and while Mike Fever did not prove much of a challenge to the man from Hollywood, the bout was prolonged by Tatum’s repeated theatrics and overtures to Spanish Red: applauding her from inside the ring and blowing kisses to her. Red, for her part, spent the entire match yelling encouragement to Tatum in both Spanish and English. After Tatum finished off Fever with his lightning fast Superkick, the duo celebrated with a big kiss in the middle of the ring.
John Tatum pinned Mike Fever with the Superkick in 0:03:36. Rating: *
Florida stated that Tatum will be competing in the final first-round matchup of the UPW World Title Tournament next week, and that his opponent was none other than “King Kong” Bruiser Brody! Sammartino said that Tatum will have to pay more attention to Bruiser than he did to his opponent tonight.
THE MAD DOG IS AFTER THE SUPERFLY
David McLane was backstage with the “Mad Dog,” Buzz Sawyer. McLane noted that Buzz and “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka would be meeting in the semifinals of the UPW World Title Tournament on the Fury Hour in a matter of weeks, and that the winner of that contest would compete for the UPW World Championship on December 6 at Blackjack Brawl. Sawyer said Snuka is a former world champion and one of the biggest names in Universal Pro Wrestling, but after the Mad Dog is finished with him, ain’t nobody gonna’ be talkin’ about the Superfly. They’re just going to be talking about the Mad Dog.
MATCH #2 Army of Darkness (w/ The Lock & Luna Vachon) vs. Sammy Hall & Mike Jackson
The bizarre foursome of the Great Kabuki, Purple Haze, The Lock and Luna Vachon took their time getting down to the ring, stopping to intimidate, harass or just generally creep out fans along the way. However, say what you will about their strange and twisted personalities, Kevin Sullivan’s mysterious charges proved that they know their business in the ring. The Purple Haze’s technical and chain-wrestling prowess complemented the brutish biting and brawling style of the wild Kabuki. Both men had their way with Sammy Hall and Mike Jackson while The Lock and Luna screeched like harpies outside the ring. Purple Haze ended the match with the Nightmare, his own variant of a sleeperhold.
Army of Darkness (Great Kabuki and Purple Haze) defeated Sammy Hall and Mike Jackson when Purple Haze defeated M. Jackson when M. Jackson passed out in the Nightmare in 0:03:24. Rating: * [The Lock interfered against Mike Jackson.]
THE UPW TAG TEAM TITLES AT BLACKJACK BRAWL
Florida begrudgingly admitted that the Army of Darkness looked formidable in their first match, but he noted that they had yet to face the top tag team competition UPW had to offer. Speaking of which, Florida explained that starting tonight, Universal Pro Wrestling would be kicking off its tag team title tournament set to culminate at the Blackjack Brawl on December 6. Hungry young teams like the Blade Runners, American Starship, and our next two teams had already been selected to compete in the tournament.
MATCH #3 UPW Tag Team Title Tournament First Round The PYT Express vs. The Jokers
Florida described the relatively unimposing masked Jokers as a veteran Las Vegas team with a chance to make a showing on the national stage. Norvell Austin and Koko Ware made their trademark entrance, wearing bedazzled white gloves, red leather jackets and dancing to the ring to a funky jambox beat. The Pretty Young Things were game, controlling most of the bout and tagging in and out with expert quickness while wearing down their opponents. Both Jokers rushed the ring out of desperation, but the PYT Express clocked them with stereo signature maneuvers: Ware with his devastating Ghostbuster brainbuster and Austin with his pinpoint flying headbutt. The PYT Express advanced and looked good doing it!
[UPW Tag Team Title Tournament - First Round]: The PYT Express (Norvell Austin and Koko Ware) defeated The Jokers (Joker #1 and Joker #2) when N. Austin pinned Joker #1 with the Flying Headbutt in 0:03:40. Rating: * 1/2
HONKY TONK WAYNE HAS ENTERED THE BUILDING
David McLane was backstage with a confident looking man dressed like a cross between an Elvis impersonator and a lounge crooner. McLane introduced him to the viewing audience as Honky Tonk Wayne, straight out of Memphis, TN. An energetic Honky interrupted McLane before he could ask his first question, telling him that he was best wrestler and the best showman in the world and that he would be bringing both of those qualities to Las Vegas and UPW. McLane said that next week on the Fury Hour, Honky would be hosting a special interview segment. Honky confirmed: next week would be the debut episode of “Honky Tonkin’ with Honky Tonk Wayne at the Honky Tonk Saloon.” Honky said everybody in Las Vegas wants to see one man as his guest—the Superfly, Jimmy Snuka, the man no one can stop talking about. Honky said Snuka used to be one of the best, but now he was a broken down, worn out old horse. Honky said if Snuka came down to the Honky Tonk Saloon next week he’d be happy to pay him in coconuts or whatever they accept for money down in the islands. McLane had another question, but Honky Tonk abruptly ended the segment, saying he had an engagement at the Mirage to attend. Sammartino thought Honky Tonk was a joke, but Florida noted that he seemed like a natural fit in Las Vegas.
MATCH #4 “The Gamesmaster” Kevin Sullivan (w/ The Lock & Luna Vachon) vs. Magic Dragon
The Captain was none too happy with the leader of the Army of Darkness, Kevin Sullivan, making his debut at the Fury Hour. Florida said he runs wrestling in the Sin City, not The Gamesmaster! Sullivan quickly and brutally wore down the masked Magic Dragon, beating him to a pulp and taunting the fans before leaving Dragon hanging upside down in the corner in a position he calls “The Tree of Woe.” Sullivan charged into the corner with a vicious running stomp to the solar plexus that made Sammartino wince, and then followed it up with a series of merciless stomps to the Magic Dragon’s chest, head and abdomen. Referee Nacho Barrera tried to separate the two, prompting Sullivan to shove Barrera out of his way! Florida said Barrera should have disqualified Sullivan for that! Nevertheless, Sullivan dragged Dragon out of the corner and finished him with a barbaric double foot stomp to the gut.
Kevin Sullivan pinned Magic Dragon with the Double Stomp in 0:02:23. Rating: * 1/4
As if Sullivan’s vicious wrestling style itself wasn’t enough, The Lock and Luna decided to celebrate by getting in a couple shots of their own. Florida said the trio and, indeed, the entire Army of Darkness were menaces to Universal Pro Wrestling. Sammartino said that may be so, but good luck getting rid of them. Florida insisted that if Kevin Sullivan and his cronies thought they could stroll into Las Vegas and the Showboat Pavilion and order “The Captain” around, they had another thing coming.
TWENTY-ONE OR BUST FOR THE GAMBLIN’ MAN
An angry and determined “Gamblin’ Man” Blackjack Mulligan was backstage with David McLane. Mulligan told McLane that Snuka has messed with the wrong gambler for the last time, and that Mulligan is holding all the hole cards. The Gamblin’ Man said he’s going to hit twenty-one at Blackjack Brawl and win the UPW World Title, and on the way there he plans on cramming his boot down as far down Snuka’s throat as it will go. Blackjack told Snuka he better watch his back before storming out of the interview.
MATCH #5 UPW Tag Team Title Tournament First Round The Blade Runners (w/ Rick Bassman & “The Russian Assassin” Ninotchka) vs. The Casey Brothers (w/ Sunshine)
The imposing and stoic Blade Runner Rock and Blade Runner Sting were escorted to the ring by their handlers, the loud and opinionated Rick Bassman (with megaphone in hand) and the quiet and deadly Ninotchka. Sammartino noted the contrast with the Casey Brothers, the veteran brown-haired Scott and the young blond Steve, and their lovely manager Sunshine. Florida remarked just how dominating and muscular the Blade Runners looked. The Blade Runners used their overwhelming strength to control much of the match, but the wily “Cowboy” Scott, the most experienced wrestler in the contest, was able to scrounge his way back. Scott looked to have the advantage, but “The Russian Assassin,” the Blade Runners’ female enforcer, tripped Casey from the outside. Sunshine yelled at the silent Nitnotchka while referee Robarb Jones tried to play peacekeeper, allowing Rock and Sting to smash the Cowboy with an illegal double team assault.
The Blade Runners regained control, but Scott caught Sting coming into the corner with a boot to the face and followed it up with his signature move, the Texas Bulldog! Casey looked to make the cover, but he noticed the obnoxious Rick Bassman moving in on Sunshine at ringside! Scott rolled out of the ring and backed off Bassman, but as Scott revved up for a haymaker he was viciously blindsided into the guardrail by Blade Runner Rock! Seeing Scott down, Sunshine leapt onto the back of Rock and began choking him! The referee once again sought to intervene outside. Steve Casey jumped into the ring to keep an eye on Blade Runner Sting, but he failed to notice the cat-like Ninotchka sneaking up behind him! Ninotchka delivered a low blow to Steve that dropped him to the mat and elicited groans from the male portion of the audience. Bassman pulled Sunshine off of Rock, allowing the Blade Runners to finish off the younger Casey with the Electric Execution.
[UPW Tag Team Title Tournament - First Round]: The Blade Runners (Blade Runner Rock and Blade Runner Sting) defeated The Casey Brothers (Scott Casey and Steve Casey) when Sting pinned Steve Casey after the Electric Execution in 0:06:05. Rating: 1/2* [Ninotchka interfered against Scott Casey.] [Ninotchka interfered against Steve Casey.] [Sunshine interfered against Blade Runner Rock.]
Florida was beside himself, calling it an unfair four-on-two attack. Sammartino agreed, but declared that the Blade Runners were an efficient, remorseless unit, and that he didn’t know who in UPW could match them both inside and outside the ring.
Just then, while Ninotchka and Bassman raised the arms of their charges over the fallen Casey Brothers, Sunshine ran into the ring and jumped on top of Ninotchka! Sunshine, who is not a fighter by training, wailed on the Russian Assassin until Blade Runner Sting grabbed her by her blonde hair and pulled her off the mat. Ninotchka got into Sunshine’s face and yelled at her in Russian. Ninotchka was about to strike the helpless Sunshine when the AMERICAN STARSHIP ran down to the ring! Starship Coyote and Starship Eagle, along with their manager, the “All-American Girl” Tina Ferrari, laid into the surprised Blade Runners, with Eagle and Coyote clotheslining Rock and Sting to the outside and Ferrari grabbing Ninotchka by the hair and whipping her over the top rope. Coyote cornered Bassman and pressed him high up in the air before heaving him to outside onto the Blade Runners!
Rock and Sting fumed on the outside, but the cool Ninotchka kept them back, apparently deciding it would be smarter to fight another day. Florida said the Blade Runners had advanced in the tag team tournament, but they might one day have to deal with the American Starship! Florida exclaimed that everyone should tune in next week to see Jimmy Snuka and Bruiser Brody in action at the FURY HOUR!
Match observations:
Things are heating up in Universal Pro Wrestling and the Fury Hour! Carl Florida & co. are back next week on SportsChannel America with more electric (and eclectic!) wrestling action!

Hot start to the show with Sullivan's group intimidating Florida. You're doing an awesome job of writing them up as a scary group, but keeping a somewhat '80s kooky side to it.
Great to see John Tatum make his Universe debut. Was afraid he'd be forgotten. Used to watch him all the time on ESPN (Global Wrestling).
I don't think Sawyer is a real threat to Snuka, but giving him some promo time makes him feel more so.
Army of Darkness looked good in their debut. Looking forward to seeing how far you go with the group.
Haha. The Jokers. Nice touch on bringing in a local team (I'm assuming) but throwing some masks on them to make them feel like a bigger deal.
Honky Tonk fits right in to UPW. Hosting an interview segment is a fun way to introduce him.
This has been almost a Kevin Sullivan feature show, but you'll get no complains from me. I don't see anyone being able to stop this group right now. Maybe Snuka if he has his head on straight.
And a hot way to end the show. American Starship against the Blade Runners is such a crazy feud that I can't help but love it. So much chaos, but that also fits in well with UPW. Is it possible we will witness the first women's match in this Universe? Me thinks so.
Hot show, Jeff. Love your writing style.

I love how this universe expand to include even more obscure (to me) wrestlers of the 80's. I was unfamiliar with Tatum and his valet, and wasn't that familiar with the Army of Darkness either. Kabuki to debut the mist? I didn't know Farris/Honky Tonk had left WWA. Now he has the gimmick he will be famous for, I think. It's obvious that UPW brings in a lot more valets than the other promotions, and this sets it apart, making it different. I bet the others will follow suit as soon as they realize that the fans also come to see some T&A And it's almost 1986. You should have had women's wrestling by now :-)

Hot start to the show. I like how you're building Carl Florida to be the Vince McMahon type - technically a face, but so smug and annoying that fans will hate him. His overacting over the Army of Darkness is great. Kevin Sullivan is a lot of fun. Hope to see big things from him.
Tatum is a fun 80s heel. Smug, Hollywood douchebag.
Army of Darkness looked tough. Could see them being tag champs sooner rather than later.
Ha. The Jokers. Jobber fodder for Austin & Ware.
Good writeup of Sullivan's first match. Really put over how sadistic he is.
By the way, forgot to mention it before, but boy does everyone hate Snuka!
Hot ending to the show. Blade Runners are bowling shoe ugly in the ring, but they're going to be over because big strong dudes are in this time frame. I'm really glad this is happening, because it will be a fun footnote later when Warrior and Sting are huge.

I see big things ahead for Sullivan and his Army. Kabuki & Purple Haze make a unique team although I would have liked if Purple Haze made a similar introduction to his IRL intro.
Another GLOW lady joins the roster. It's tough keeping up with all these women since I don't much outside of WWF's girls in the 80's. Tatum is a great pick up though.
I like that you're generating some buzz with each tournament match and not just relying on building up the finals. Mad Dog vs. The Superfly won't be pretty but I'm actually looking forward to it.
AOD is going to be fun to follow here. Such a unique cast of characters.
As impressive as the Jokers may have been in their heyday, they didn't look too good against The PYT.
Is Honky Tonk Wayne dressing like Elvis yet? Vegas is such a great place for that gimmick to get started.
Sullivan's offense is ruthless. And wrestlers all across the Universe will soon be stealing the Tree of Woe.
Snuka has a lot on his plate. Buzz Sawyer, Honky Tonkin, and the inevitable matchup with the Gamblin Man.
Great finish to the tag team main event. With Florida's love for huge, muscular dudes I figured the Blade Runners were going over but The Casey Brothers didn't look like job guys in the loss. When The Blade Runners and American Starship meet up it's going to be very, very entertaining.
