Just saw the news that the ECW/Extreme brand will be gone in a few weeks.
Their slot on SciFi will be filled by a new WWE show called NXT which is supposed to showcase new, young talent.
NXT could be interesting, especially if they just let wrestlers wrestle. Big if.
Extreme brand pretty needed retirement though.

I'm not entirely sure how different the change is going to be. I mean, it wasn't officially declared as such, but ECW was pretty much the brand for young up-and-coming wrestlers as is. They'll need to do something special with it though to draw any viewers, especially if they're getting all of the vets off the show.
Good news is I have heard Christian is going to Smackdown, so that should lead to some good stuff.

I have a feeling that they are going to try to do a more "UFC-style" program. aka "rasslin"

ECW was pretty much dead when Vince McMahon "revived" it. For one who actually stayed up till 2am on Saturdays to watch ECW on the Sport South channel, I feel that Vinnie Mac did the true fans of the brand a huge injustice. He made money off of the ECW library, but in retrospect, he didn't give a darn about the brand. I believe that he did everything to kill ECW and had plans on replacing it all along.

Goddamnit, does this mean they're gonna get rid of the platinum phoenix belt?! it's the only belt I've really loved since the Attitude era world title!

I have a feeling that they are going to try to do a more "UFC-style" program. aka "rasslin" Wait wait wait.... More MMA/wrestling, and young talent? Isn't that what the Paul E. Revived ECW was supposed to be in the first place? *confused* Ohwait, now it's Vince's idea, and not called ECW... Got it.

It's funny to me that the same people who get pissed at WWE for not doing anything new and original are mad at Vince for ECW not being exactly what it was. 15 years ago.
ECW had a lot of influences on the wrestling world, but it is held in far higher regard than it actually was.

I was referring to interviews with Heyman where he said that after it was announced ECW was going to be a third brand, he wanted it to be more UFC-like (More wrestling-centric, less goofy gimicks) and as a platform for young talent.
That of course went up in smoke as the first episode had a mummy and a vampire :-P

McMahon reveals concept of "NXT" » Reported by Adam Martin of WrestleView.com » On Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at 11:44 AM EST
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Variety is featuring an interview with Vince McMahon where he talks about the end of ECW on SyFy tonight and gives details on what the concept of NXT will involve including how the show will be broken up into two or three seasons and will feature developmental talent from WWE's Florida Championship Wrestling territory.
"This is an opportunity to show another side you've never seen. These kids crash and burn a lot. By putting them into this environment we'll find out if they can make it. There's no better way to develop skills than being in front of an audience. And that makes for good television. 'ECW' feels old, it feels tired. Sometimes our brands need freshening up. You have to continue to reinvent yourself."

ECW wouldn't have felt "old and tired" if Vince McMahon had pushed the product the way it should have been pushed to begin with. It's things like this that makes me like TNA that much more.

You're right. Because nothing says "fresh new product" better than Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall, Sean Waltman, and the Nasty Boys.

So the rookies and their mentors have been announced and the one that has the internet all in a tizzy is The Miz mentoring Daniel Bryan (having two first names and no last name is lame as hell) aka "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson. Alot of people seem to feel this is Vince giving ROH and their fans the finger.
Seems like a great idea to me though: pair the guy who lives by his mic skills with the guy who lives by his in-ring skills.

Well, McMahon said it'd be a New Concept.
It certainly is that. If nothing else, some of the guys in FCW are getting early pushes, so that's not a bad thing, and as Lilla said they seem to be mixing up the talents of the Pro and the Rookie to get the best mix.
It'll be interesting.... At least for a little while. Holding off judgement 'til then.

I care less and less about this with every new bit of info I get. I really don't agree with some of the people selected as "Mentors" but then they have to use people that are "stars" but they feel they can "spare" I suppose.
Personally, I'd much rather see them get mentored by guys that have been around in the business for a while and not people wrestling less than a decade.
Also, I know they can't really have like Jack Brisco show up cause 90% of WWE's fanbase won't know who Jack Brisco is, but it'd be nice for them to bring in legends like that for special appearances on the show too. I'm sure despite the lack of knowledge by the casual fan, they could still manage to introduce some of the legends like that to the general public. If they whole point of NXT is for people to see some key insights into the business they wouldn't normally see, I'm sure someone like Rick Steamboat or whoever else WWE is still on good terms with could provide some pretty excellent insights.

Ummm They can't have Jack Brisco show up cause he's dead. But I get your point.

Michael Cole just acknowledged on RAW that the pairing of Miz and Danielson has caused alot of controversy on the internet. I thought the WWE pretended the internet didn't exist except for WWE.com?

Michael Cole asked that his WWE Universe page be removed earlier today, thusly kicking off his feud with the Internet and Josh Matthews.
