After Montreal, Vince let Neidhart and Davey Boy Smith out of their WWF contracts but wouldn't let Owen out of his. And Owen couldn't/wouldn't quit & sit because he had a family to support.
Why did Vince refuse to let Owen go? Because he felt that unlike Bulldog and Anvil he actually had some usefulness?
How long was Owen under contract for? If he hadn't met such a tragic end would he have been able leave WWF in a matter of months?

According to interviews with (I think) HHH, the whole "The Game" concept was going to be Owen's gimmick (Evil, No-nonsense, Cerebral Assasin as a play on The Hitman, etc etc etc)
Shame it never happened.
I think in one of Bret Hart's books he mentioned that Owen still had a year or so left, and that he'd stayed out of "loyalty to the company" even after what had happened.
Pretty sure I'd read that he was planning on a career of fire fighting after he'd retired.
(BTW: Thank you for the topic: It got me to watch a few Owen matches ;->)

Man, can you imagine how different things would've been if Owen had been given "The Game" gimmick?
Someone needs to do a "What If" circuit for it now.
