Well, it finally happened. World Wrestling Entertainment is now just "WWE". Wrestling has been banished from the face of professional sports performance entertainment eventing.
I'm really sports entertainmenting with my conscience over how I feel about this. Predictions of doom and failure always tend to be overblown, but when the biggest professional wrestling promotion in the world refuses to even say the words, then that truly is an apocalyptic sign.
Jesus. Thank god for good TNM circuits. They're about the only thing going right now.

I've seen stuff on this posted in various websites, and although I don't really agree with their reasoning behind the "change", I can see it from their perspective, too.
Being known as "World Wrestling Entertainment" was fine - and would've been 100% acceptable - had the company decided to stay with a strict wrestling product. But, with their invasion (pun intended) into movies, music, etc., they have become just another all-purpose entertainment venture. However, the one thing that they will never STOP doing, is wrestling. While there's not much of it done on TV anymore, it's the company's bread and butter. They're still out doing House Shows every week, and that's what is bringing in the fan base. The other stuff are just attempts to keep that fan base locked into the overall product.
And, with Vince's mindset - and the current look of his closest competition - it probably doesn't bother him one bit to cut "wrestling" from the company's name.

corporate.wwe.com/news/2011/2011_04_07.htmlSo, reading the actual press release--instead of being a butthurt tool--is pretty much what you expect. It has nothing to do with them "distancing themselves from wrestling" in terms of Raw, Smackdown, PPVs, house shows, etc, it's like wickedrex says, they're just gonna do other stuff to promote the brand. OH NOES! Note: Wrestling isn't super popular. There's not two major promotions to keep up the competition, notoriety, etc. Using other ventures to try and bring in an audience is hardly a bad idea. Yes, I'm sure it'll lead to some annoying stuff on WWE TV at times, but it's not like that's any different from the past. Does anyone called UFC "Ultimate Fighting Championship" anymore? Does anyone think TUF has anything to do with the fights other than the finale? Also, it should be noted in the same press release, super huge old school NWA mark Triple H is the new head of Talent Relations/Development. Oh no! Another Sheamus or Jack Thwagger might come around! ...oh wait. Oh yeah, guess who pushed for Mistico's signing? And Jon Moxley just signed. Man, no more wrestling.

I understand it totally from a business/advertisers standpoint. Completely understand it.
HOWEVER
I think they should have kept the old "Coliseum" moniker (IE: Coliseum Entertainment or somesuch), and had World Wrestling Entertainment as one of the "branches", like they do with WWE Films and WWE Music now. (So Coliseum Entertainment = Parent company, Coliseum Music/Film for the non-wrestling stuff, and WWE for Raw/Smackdown/ECW/NXT/whatever they'll replace Superstars with next, games, comics, etc)
But, that's just me. That and I always loved the "epicness" of "Coliseum Home Video". Just sounded cool.
