The construction of fictional worlds and/or languages for use in writing, RPG playing, etc, etc or just as a general hobby.
A good (and mainstream) example of both would be Tolkien's Middle Earth and his Elven languages.

I'm slowly crafting a fantasy world in which I intend to write a series of fantasy novels set there. I have a number of characters, an broad history of the world, and a rough map. I've only written a little of the beginning of the first one though.
Given my tendency toward fantasy wrestler circuits this is probably unsurprising now that I think about. I don't actually read many fantasy novels (most of my reading is actually nonfiction history) but when I write/book fiction I'd rather have badly written characters than take real (theoretically good) characters and write them badly.

I just started a new conworlding project a couple days ago (hence my thought to ask if anyone here was similarly interested in such things) though with my lack of gaming the past several years it'll most likely end up not getting used for anything really other than something to fill my time.
After laying out an initial phonology for place naming in the primary language, I think I'm already going to have to go back and retool it so that it has a more "Western Semitic Family" feel to it before I start in on syntax and morphology.

Seeing how I've slowly created a world of my own for about as long as I've been called Zedja (since 2000/2001) I would have to say yes. No languages yet though since I've mostly focused on the history of the world and my own characters. Having next to no free time to work on it, not much of it has been written down.
