With Ventura gone today, anyone taking his place on commentary? Bubba is still kind of green at this point, but he's playing his role effectively. It's going to be an ugly match against Animal though. You forgot to mention Manny's lackluster run in New York! Geez, Josh. Revisionist history much!? He was a pretty solid act in real life around this time. Hopefully you do better than I did with him. I think whoever wins between Lawler/Borne tonight is going to be getting a decent push, while the loser is going to be way down the pecking order for awhile. Savage is just awesome. He needs to quit NWF and come to a real organization though. I'm thinking you go one of two ways with the Freebirds right now. Either a) they've changed their ways (for now) and fight alongside Von Erich to take on the Horsemen, or b) they turn on Kerry to show they're still dicks and then Von Erich has two four man squads to fight. It looks like the Dirty Cowboys will be technically faces, but still kind of assholes, sort of like Stan Hansen was for me for awhile. That's good - as Piper's lackeys for so long, a sudden turn to shaking hands and kissing babies would be weird. Great main event match with Valentine and Fujinami. Valentine is going to serve as a great enforcer for the Horsemen. Not a lot else to say about it. I can't see Orndorff not winning tonight. Hogan/Orndorff is money, and Zbyszko is an interesting character when he's trying to get revenge. Mr. Wonderful wins, and it is not clean.

Results of NWF - Little Rock, AR - 8/11/85:
MATCH #1 The Dream Team/“The Russian Nightmare” Nikita Koloff (w/ “Luscious” Johnny V) vs. Sons of the Orient/Harley Race
We hadn't been back to Little Rock for a big show in nearly a year, so it came as no surprise that the show was sold out. And what better way to start off this jam-packed show with a fast paced six-man tag. Several stories were coming to a head in this match with Harley Race being turned on by his student, Hercules Hernandez, how Nikita Koloff would rebound from his first loss in singles competition after a nearly year-long undefeated streak, and the Dream Team basically stealing the Tag Team Titles from the Sons of the Orient. With all of that, you knew this match would be heated. While we did see a bunch of quick tags in and out, you can't say we saw a ton of tag team maneuvers. All six men were out there wanting to throw fists at one another. If you wanted to see how Koloff would recover from adversity due to his first loss, this match showed he might be even deadlier with the undefeated streak done with. The match broke down near the end with Race and Hercules exchanging fists on the outside, Fujinami tossing Beefcake over the guardrail and into the fans, and Koloff and Chosyu left alone in the ring. Both men stood in their corners like bulls ready to charge and when they did Koloff went for his Russian Sickle. Chosyu ducked under, and when Koloff turned around, Chosyu drilled him with the Riki Lariato! The crowd exploded as Chosyu rose to his feet and pounded his chest in victory. Unfortunately for him, Koloff got back to his feet as well! Chosyu heard the crowd's cheering lower in volume so he knew something was up. He turned back around only to be met by Koloff roaring into his face with his tongue sticking out. Chosyu had no time to defend himself before he was hit with the Russian Sickle. Like so many men before him, Chosyu was unable to kick out of the Sickle.
The Dream Team (Brutus Beefcake and Hercules Hernandez) and Nikita Koloff defeated Sons of the Orient (Riki Chosyu and Tatsumi Fujinami) and Harley Race when N. Koloff pinned Chosyu with the Russian Sickle in 0:10:56. Rating: ***
After the match, “Luscious” Johnny V quickly gathered his men and got them out of there as Harley Race and Tatsumi Fujinami checked on their fallen brother. Fujinami lightly slapped Chosyu across the cheek a few times to wake him up. It was a tough match and they just fell short of winning it. We learned after the show that Tatsumi Fujinami and Riki Chosyu are going to head back to Japan for a tour. They are going back as heroes, having done amazingly well for themselves since entering the NWF, winning the Tag Team Titles, and putting on great matches every night. Race, meanwhile, has promised he will not be done with Hercules Hernandez until he is able to meet up with him one-on-one inside the ring. I seriously doubt Johnny V will want one half of his champions to get into the ring with a man like Race.
MATCH #2 The Dirty Cowboys vs. “Wildfire” Tommy Rich/Ole Anderson
These past couple months have changed the landscape of the NWF. Roddy Piper is now gone from the NWF, and we have the Horsemen to thank. Two of those Horsemen would be in action for the first time in tag team action against Piper's old henchmen, the Dirty Cowboys. Bob Orton Jr. and Dick Slater let it be known that Piper left them with one last paycheck, a big one at that, to handle his unfinished business. Tommy Rich was the one that the Cowboys laid most of the blame on for sending Piper packing. You could tell by the way they focused on him during this match. It would cost them as they were so intent on trying to lay a vicious beating on Wildfire that Orton didn't notice Rich make a tag to Ole as he was bouncing off the ropes. Orton blasted Rich fully in the face with his cast, but Ole was now the legal man. Ole whipped Orton around and dropped him with a DDT. Slater couldn't get into the ring in time to break it up, and the Horsemen were the victors. Slater was so furious that he took his cowboy boot off and swung it wildly over his head as Ole, grabbing a bloody-nosed Rich on the way, rolled out of the ring. Rich was a little woozy, but he had a big smile on his face when referee Gil Roman raised the hands of the Horsemen as they walked up the aisle.
Four Horsemen (Tommy Rich and Ole Anderson) defeated Dirty Cowboys (Bob Orton Jr. and Dick Slater) when O. Anderson pinned Orton after a DDT in 0:09:25. Rating: ***
MATCH #3 No Disqualification Match Jerry “The King” Lawler vs. “Maniac” Matt Borne
Jerry Lawler was not always a nice guy. A few years ago he would top the chart for most hated wrestler on the NWF roster. But that all changed due to the respect he found for the late David Von Erich. And so he did what David would have done had he seen Matt Borne bullying officials and announcers. He put a stop to it. That led up to a match last month where Borne blatantly hit Lawler with a low blow to get himself disqualified. Lawler requested this match so there would be no easy way out for Borne. Borne claims that he is “crazily smart” and we bore witness to that by avoiding Lawler's grasp for the most part in this match. Lawler wasn't going to stop chasing after Borne, though, until he got his hands on him. He eventually was able to corner him on the outside where he tossed Borne into the ringpost. Borne was busted open and had a hard time seeing from that point on. Lawler tried to put an end to the match right then and there as he slammed Borne into the guardrail a few times and threw him across and over the ringside table. Lawler even had him prepped for the Piledriver on the outside, but Borne was able to worm his way out and roll back into the ring. Borne was still bleeding pretty badly as Lawler thought he had this match wrapped up. He started to play to the crowd a bit as he pulled his singlet strap down. He showed the fans his fist and they roared their approval for him to open up Borne's cut even further. That split second was all Borne needed to bring his arm up in a low blow on Lawler! Lawler was in serious pain as Borne jumped to his feet, drove his knee into Lawler's groin three more consecutive times, before allowing Lawler to crumple to the mat. One lazy cover by Borne was all it took to get him the three count.
No-DQ-Match: Matt Borne pinned Jerry Lawler after a knee to the groin in 0:10:56. Rating: *** ¼
Borne pointed to his temple after the match like he had outsmarted Lawler once again. That wasn't all as he grabbed the crown that Lawler brings to ringside and propped it on top of his own head. He apparently didn't like the way it looked as he tossed it on the mat and stomped it, breaking it in the process. Borne will be laughing all the way to the pay window as Lawler squirmed on the mat in pain. When Lawler was finally able to get to his feet, he pushed away the officials that were trying to help him. He had a look of pure fury on his face as he stormed to the back.
MATCH #4 US Title Match “Macho Man” Randy Savage(c) (w/ Miss Elizabeth) vs. “Hacksaw” Butch Reed
Butch Reed's temper combined with his strength has catapulted him to the top of the wrestling world. He had made it a mission to dethrone Hulk Hogan since he felt cheated out of his rightful World Title reign at the end of last year. There is an argument to be made that Hogan stole Reed's limelight. Meanwhile, due to his feud with Hogan, Reed also made an enemy out of Randy Savage. And that's how we ended up tonight with the US Title on the line in a match pitting two men nearing the peak of their careers. Reed and Savage ended the tag team match last month by brawling up the aisle. That's where we started this match as Reed ambushed Savage during his introduction. Savage had to fight free to finally get in the ring, but by that point Reed had already dished out a significant amount of damage. Reed should have tried harder to put him away earlier in the match because Savage slowly started to fight back as the match wore on. Savage is as resilient as they come, and you have to put him away when given the opportunity. Right when Savage had actually taken control of the match, Reed showed that he isn't above breaking some rules to get the upper hand. He caught Savage with a thumb to the eye that opened him up for a spinebuster slam. Miss Elizabeth saw all of this as she walked up the steps to try and tell referee Randy Anderson what had happened. Anderson admitted he did not see the errant thumb, and tried to tell her to get off the ring apron. She didn't do it fast enough for Reed's liking, however, as he started towards her. It was reminiscent of last month as Reed tried to put his hands on Elizabeth, but she tried to run down the ringsteps to avoid him. On the last step she apparently twisted an ankle in her high heels. She was holding her ankle in pain as Reed stood inside the ring laughing.
He wouldn't be laughing for long as Savage had recovered and drilled him with a knee from behind. Reed's own momentum caused him to ram his chest into the turnbuckles. Reed fell to the mat as Savage quickly scaled the top rope. Before he could deliver his Flying Elbow, he saw Elizabeth on the floor in pain. He quickly hopped down beside her and checked on her. She kept pushing him away, telling him to get back in the ring, but he was obviously concerned. Finally he went back to the top turnbuckle, but by this time Reed was back to his feet. Savage flew off with a high crossbody, but Reed caught him in mid-air! Reed dropped him across his knee viciously with a backbreaker. And that move was enough to get the 1-2-3!
Butch Reed pinned Randy Savage after a backbreaker in 0:11:52. Rating: *** 1/2 (Butch Reed won the NWF United States Title.)
Reed grabbed his newly won title while Elizabeth hobbled her way into the ring. What a rough way for Savage's title reign to end. Savage was on his hands and knees trying to catch his breath, but Reed planted a boot to his ribs to add insult to injury. Elizabeth yelled at him to leave Savage alone which simply got a grin from Hacksaw. Reed left the ring with no further incident, but Macho Man will not let this go unanswered.
MATCH #5 Number One Contendership Match “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff (w/ “Superstar” Billy Graham) vs. “The Cruncher” Larry Zbyszko
Larry Zbyszko thoroughly embarrassed Billy Graham last month by donning the mask of the Executioner and defeating him in under six minutes. Paul Orndorff didn't escape unscathed either as he felt Crunch Time before the night was over. This was more than enough to finally convince Orndorff to meet him in the ring one more time. The fact that the number one contendership for the World Title was also up for grabs didn't hurt matters. You could tell right off the bat that Orndorff's strategy was to anger Zbyszko enough so that the Cruncher would get himself disqualified. Zbyszko was somehow able to restrain himself, but you have to wonder how he did that with the number of underhanded tactics Orndorff was using in the match. Orndorff realized he had Zbyszko on the ropes, and decided he was going to try and defeat Zbyszko in the center of the ring. Once he stopped cheating, however, the match quickly swayed back into Zbyszko's favor. Orndorff was sent reeling by the lefts, rights, and uppercuts sent his way by the Cruncher. The match was Zbyszko's for the taking when we saw Billy Graham motion to the back. He was calling in his insurance policy that he mentioned on Worldwide earlier today. Out came one of the strongest men I've ever seen. It took a second to realize it was the man billed by sports magazines the world over as “The World's Strongest Man” TED ARCIDI! This is the guy that had just bench pressed 705 pounds to set a world record in March of this year!
We all wondered just what Arcidi was doing here, but the way he talked to Graham when he made it to ringside made it clear he was on the Superstar's side. And when referee Dave Hebner was accidentally hit with an errant elbow by Orndorff, we saw Arcidi enter the ring for the first time. Zbyszko had Orndorff ready for Crunch Time, but Arcidi whipped him around and plastered him with a clothesline. Zbyszko never saw it coming. Arcidi proceeded to grab Zbyszko and hoist him way over his head in a Gorilla Press. He then dropped him face first on the top turnbuckle. Graham was overheard yelling that the move was called “the Clean and Jerk.” Zbyszko was out on his feet as he stumbled out of the corner. Orndorff wanted to deliver the finishing blow as he told Arcidi to leave the ring. The Piledriver spiked Zbyszko's neck into the mat, and Hebner recovered to count the three and award Orndorff the number one contendership.
Number-One-Contenders-Match: Paul Orndorff pinned Larry Zbyszko with the Piledriver in 0:15:12. Rating: **** ¼
Graham, Orndorff, and Arcidi were obviously pleased with themselves as they walked back up the aisle. How in the world did Graham get Arcidi under contract? No one even knew he was in the wrestling business. Zbyszko has been cheated out of another match with Orndorff, and this time he has lost a shot at the World Title. The Cruncher's anger is legendary. We are sure to see some of that when he realizes how he was cheated here tonight in Little Rock.
MATCH #6 Big Bubba Rogers (w/ Jim Cornette/Midnight Express) vs. Animal (w/ Paul Ellering/Hawk)
We knew this match would have all sorts of hijinks with this many men at ringside to watch. This was also Big Bubba Rogers' first real test inside of a NWF ring. He has some work to do on the technical side of things, but he was able to handle himself very well considering he was going up against a former two-time World Tag Team Champion. The reason he did so well was his immense size and power being able to match Animal blow for blow. It was amazing to see both men hit each other with these powerful shots and neither man give an inch. Something had to give and it finally did when all the men on the outside couldn't take it any longer and started throwing fists at one another. Bobby Eaton and Dennis Condrey ended up fighting it out with Hawk while Paul Ellering chased Jim Cornette around the ring. In all of the chaos, Hawk was somehow able to wrestle the tennis racket away from Cornette and toss it to Animal. Referee Randy Anderson was distracted trying to separate the men on the outside and never saw Animal blast Rogers between the eyes with the sport equipment. Rogers, as tough as he is, couldn't take a shot like that. Animal picked up the win once Anderson reentered the ring.
Animal pinned Big Bubba Rogers after hitting him with a tennis racket in 0:06:31. Rating: * ¼
As soon as the bell rang, the whole thing erupted inside the ring. Unfortunately for the Road Warriors, they were outnumbered. And once Cornette grabbed his tennis racket back, he ran around wildly connecting with the skulls of Hawk, Animal, and Ellering. It was looking bleak for the Road Warriors when GEORGE STEELE entered the ring. The crowd loudly cheered on Steele as they thought he was out there to lend a helping hand. Instead he walked over to the turnbuckle and started ripping it to shreds. He was out here to have his dinner! Cornette wasn't exactly thrilled with the interruption as he grabbed Steele and started threatening him with the racket. That did not go over well as Steele ripped the racket out of Cornette's hand and started swinging at anyone that got close to him. Soon he had chased Condrey, Eaton, Rogers, and Cornette from the ring. Steele started to rub his bald head with the tennis racket as the Road Warriors and Ellering joined Steele in keeping Cornette and his stable at bay.
MATCH #7 “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair (w/ Woman) vs. Kerry Von Erich
This match came about due to Ric Flair and the Horsemen interrupting Kerry Von Erich's award ceremony for being the Best Athlete from Texas in 1985. Von Erich has stood his ground before when he was out numbered, just ask the Fabulous Freebirds, and he wasn't about to stand there and be mocked by the Nature Boy. The result was this match here in Little Rock. The match started off quickly and the intensity grew as it wore on. Von Erich was out there to prove himself, and there is no better way to do that than to defeat someone with the stature of Ric Flair. You really have to hand it to Kerry as he matched Flair move for move, blow for blow, and punch for chop. The match even started to turn in Kerry's favor as it wore on. Woman was noticeably growing nervous and apparently so were the Horsemen who came down to the ring. Even with Greg Valentine, Ole Anderson, Tommy Rich, and Woman watching on, Kerry kept his focus and almost pinned Flair with the Discus Punch. He would have had him to if he had hooked the leg, but instead Flair was able to get his foot on the bottom rope. Kerry went for it all when he tried to lock in the Iron Claw, but Flair knew that would be his demise. The Dirtiest Player in the Game popped his thumb into Kerry's eye to break the hold and quickly brought him down with a small package. Three seconds later and Kerry was wondering what had just happened.
Ric Flair pinned Kerry Von Erich after a small package in 0:18:49. Rating: *** 3/4
The Ric Flair that first came to the NWF would have shaken Kerry's hand after the match and applauded the youngster's effort. This wasn't the same Ric Flair. Flair called in the Horsemen and they immediately surrounded Von Erich. Von Erich was still rubbing at his eye, but realized he was in trouble. He got into a fighting stance, but you knew he was about to be thoroughly destroyed. Flair grabbed a microphone and berated Kerry for thinking he was worthy of being in the ring with him. Now that he had taught him a lesson about wrestling, he was going to have the Horsemen teach him a lesson about respect. Just when Ole Anderson was about to charge in, out came the FABULOUS FREEBIRDS! Michael Hayes, Iceman King Parsons, and Buddy Roberts all slid into the ring with TERRY GORDY following behind on crutches. He stayed on the outside, but the remaining three Freebirds stood guard in front of Kerry. Von Erich had no idea how to take this, but the Horsemen realized it might be better to live and fight another day. They left the ring promising Kerry they would see him again. Meanwhile, Hayes tried to pat Kerry on the back, but Von Erich wanted nothing to do with them. He quickly left the scene as well.
MATCH #8 World Title Match Hulk Hogan(c) vs. Jesse “The Body” Ventura
We all saw Jesse Ventura pin Hulk Hogan in the center of the ring last month. That was in a tag team match with Butch Reed as a partner. The question was how could Ventura compete against Hogan in a singles match. We quickly found the answer to that question. Ventura stood in the ring as Hogan made his entrance, but he only got halfway down when PAUL ORNDORFF attacked him! Orndorff tossed him into the ringpost causing Hogan to be busted open. But Orndorff wasn't done as he tossed Hogan into the ring and planted him with the Piledriver! Hogan was laid out and the bell hadn't even rung yet. Ventura was all smiles as he told referee Dave Hebner to ring the bell. Hebner refused as he ordered Orndorff from the ring. Orndorff put his hands up like he had done nothing wrong. And just like that he left the scene of the crime. Orndorff and Hogan have a history with one another, but haven't crossed paths in a long time. This all had to do with giving Ventura the advantage in the match.
Thankfully, Hebner refused to ring the bell. He waited for Hogan to get back to his feet and even offered him the option of postponing the title defense to a different day. To the surprise of no one, Hogan shook Hebner off and told him he wanted Ventura TONIGHT. A brave decision, but we quickly saw the error in it as Ventura assaulted him. Hebner reluctantly called for the bell as Ventura kept on the pressure. It was only going to be a matter of time before Ventura was able to wear Hogan down and win the match and the title. He focused in on the neck that was injured by Orndorff's Piledriver, and tried to open up Hogan's cut even further. Hogan wasn't bleeding too badly, but you could tell it was bothering him as it ran into his eyes. Ventura would attempt to use the Inverted Body Vice to get the submission win and had it locked on for nearly a minute. Hogan somehow fought the pain and broke the move. Ventura tried to keep Hogan down, but something snapped in the Hulkster as he started shaking his head. The fans got behind him and Ventura saw the advantage slipping away. Suddenly Hogan was shaking his finger in Ventura's face, and the Body was begging off! It would do no good as Hogan blasted him with several right hands. The Big Boot and the Big Leg Drop followed. Hogan refused to go for the cover as he posed in front of the fans. The fans were blowing the roof off of the arena as Hogan flexed, but they could tell he was making a mistake. Ventura slowly came to and tried to attack Hogan from behind, but Hogan turned around, nailed him with another right hand that sent Ventura crashing to the mat. One more Big Leg Drop finished the match and we had our winner!
Hulk Hogan pinned Jesse Ventura with the Big Leg Drop in 0:12:31. Rating: ** 1/2 (Hulk Hogan retained the NWF World Title.)
Hogan grabbed his title, but that wasn't all as he grabbed Ventura's feather boa he wore to the ring. Hogan wrapped the boa around his neck, threw the title over his shoulder, and started flexing again as his theme music played over the speakers. Ventura staggered to his feet while all of the celebrating was going on and ate one more right hand that sent him flying over the top rope. We're going to have to wait and see how this all plays out, but you have to know this wasn't what Orndorff had planned when he ambushed Hogan before the match.

It'll be interesting to see, or rather hear, Body's commentary from now on regarding Hogan after the match. Went pretty textbook. Hogan got the win, but his next big feud is now set up with Orndorff.
Reed wins the title. He's well deserving of some gold, although you know Savage isn't going to go away quietly. Looking forward to more out of those two.
Sons of the Orient had a nice run. Wonder if Race is going to try to recruit a new team to side with him in his fight against Johnny V and go against the Dream Team.
Downright Giddy about a Freebirds/Horsemen feud

Kicking things off with the huge 6 man! I could image a whole lot of striking and flat out brawling in this one. Probably not the prettiest match but a lot of intensity for sure. It's sad seeing SOTO leave NWF but I know Chosyu has some years left, not sure about Fujinami. We might see one or both back in the States before we know it.
I really like how the Cowboys haven't changed their style a bit. It would be cool to see them cash in on Piper's final request but I don't think the Horsemen are going to be stopped for a long time.
I wouldn't say consecutive low blows is "crazily smart" but it really doesn't matter here because it's all legal. The heels are on a roll tonight with Borne's win!
Great match between Reed and Savage! I could see Savage having a stern talking to with Elizabeth to keep off the ring apron in the future but what's done is done. Reed is the new US Champ! And by the looks of things it's far from over.
Okay, I'm fairly certain Ted Arcidi has already exceeded his real-life expectations in WWF. His finish sounds brutal and he named it after assumingly one of his favorite excercises. Orndorff gets the victory and I cannot WAIT for the Orndorff/Hogan rivalry to begin.
The heels are 5 for 5! At this rate, Ventura will be the new World Champion!
Great finish with Animal using Cornette's racket to lay out Big Bubba. It was justified and it was sweet revenge. Steele doesn't exactly fit the bill when it comes to the Legion of Doom but he makes a hilarious neusense for Cornette. Looking forward to where all of this goes.
The Dirtiest Player in the game strikes again! And even though my gut told me the Freebirds would even the odds I still got chills when they stood in the ring side by side with Kerry. I'm hoping Kerry can put his old grudge aside. He needs guys like the Freebirds if he wants to stand up to the Horsemen.
Yes! The Orndorff/Hogan rivalry has already begun! Such a hot way to start off the main event too! You could tell everyone would have been edge as this match played out but Hulkamania prevails! Two Big Leg Drops later and I'm almost certain we've seen the last Ventura's in ring career.

Yeah, it definitely looks right now that if you're going to beat Nikita, it's going to be with a roll up. This put him over like gangbusters. And sad to see SOTO go, but not a lot of room for them right now. And it would make sense that big Japanese stars would be heading back to Japan. Johnny V, if you were smart, do everything in your power to keep Hercules away from Race.
Good match, but not a chance in hell that the Horsemen were going to lose their first match as a group.
Borne continues to be awesome. And even if Lawler has slipped considerably to where he was in the past, he's still a former World champion, and Borne just pinned him (even if it was via groin devastation).
Great match for the US Title with a great writeup. I think there may have been more for Savage to do with the title, but Reed has earned a championship run of some sort after being a pleasant surprise of the last year. Wonder how Macho Man is going to respond, or if Elizabeth will get any flack for being a distraction.
Oh God, Ted Arcidi. I'm not a fan of him, but as long as he stays in this role and isn't wrestling too much, this could work. The more important thing is Orndorff is the new #1 contender, and this could be a damn good money feud with Hogan. But he is still going to have to do something about Zbyszko, who's not going to let this go.
Bubba did the best he could, but he just doesn't have the in-ring experience right now to beat someone like Animal. And fun way to get Steele involved in the mix. Will be interesting to see if the Road Warriors actually try to befriend him.
Flair has officially settled into his heel persona. I think he'll be the one who eventually dethrones Hogan, but these battles with Von Erich and the Freebirds could go on awhile. I wonder when Von Erich will trust the Freebirds, and if he actually could trust them. I still think there's a lot of unresolved issues there.
You actually had me believing Ventura had a chance after that attack by Orndorff. It would have been a crazy angle , and ultimately I'm glad Hogan retained because Hogan/Orndorff is a license to print money, but you had me thinking the Body had a real chance. And considering he doesn't wrestle much, he looked good out there and put on a great show.
Fun show all around.

TV-show before Little Rock
Fun segment with the tennis balls. Bellomo is comedy gold.
Animal will probably fall to Rogers, that's the upside of being a tag wrestler. Yes, I said upside, because you can lose singles matches and it doesn't really matter.
Fernandez was in GCW a couple of years ago, right? He feuded with Rhodes if I remember correctly.
Fujinami is in the same position as Animal, and Valentine should win this after a good contest. Terrific TV match though.
Not the most eventful of TV shows, but worked fine as a lead-in to Little ROck, which shapes up to be a solid show. I'd put my money on Orndorrf coming out on top over Zbyszko. NWF needs a Hogan vs Orndorrf program!

Big Show!
Hogan going over was academic but a good lead into the feud with Mr. Wonderful. I wonder if Orndorff can knock the Hulk off his ledge, my gut says no, as Savage I think is the man to do it, but I am really looking forward to the feud.
Horseman/Freebirds should be gold. GORDY!!!
Reed and Orndorff were obvious winners, and deservedly so.
Matt Borne is so interesting, keep up the good work!

NWF WORLDWIDE Atlanta, GA | August 18, 1985 (Taped August 10, 1985)
Commentators: Gordon Solie and Jesse Ventura
As the show began, viewers not in the know quickly found out the outcome of the Hulk Hogan-Jesse Ventura match in Little Rock simply by Ventura's appearance. He had a black eye that was turning yellow, healing after the week of rest, and his neck was in a brace. Gordon Solie made a remark about how he didn't think Ventura would make it to join him on commentary for today's show. This led to Ventura whipping his neck around to say something to Solie but simply uttered an “Ouch!” instead. Obviously, the opening segment centered around Ventura's lack of success in winning the World Title from Hogan. Ventura was furious at the refereeing in the match as he showed two still photos of Hogan using a clenched fist during the match. Ventura thought that was grounds for an immediate disqualification. Solie showed his own picture of Paul Orndorff attacking Hulk Hogan before the match, and said THAT was worthy of a DQ. Ventura disagreed since it happened before the bell had even rung. Disqualifications can only be called for DURING a match. Not before or after. Solie thought Ventura should be happy he escaped with his limbs attached, but Ventura still felt cheated. He wasn't going to remain upset, however, since he knew Mr. Wonderful would get the job done in Atlanta in just a few weeks.
MATCH #1 Greg “The Hammer” Valentine vs. Carry Clarke
The Four Horsemen were not happy with the Fabulous Freebirds intervening on Kerry Von Erich's behalf last week in Little Rock. Ric Flair had already emerged victorious from his match with Kerry, but the Horsemen were interested in doing more damage to the son of Fritz Von Erich. Thankfully for Kerry, whether he likes it or not, the Freebirds were there to put a stop to it. Now a match has been signed for Atlanta where all four members of the Horsemen will square off against the three healthy Freebirds. No word yet on who the fourth man will be for the Freebirds, but one can imagine that Kerry should step into that slot. Kerry, on the other hand, might have something to say about that since he isn't exactly friendly with Michael Hayes or the rest of the Freebirds. With all of that being said, Greg Valentine easily put away his opponent today with the Figure-Four Leglock. He has shown flashes recently of the man who was World Champion for over a year, and it is the Horsemen that are bringing it out in him.
Solie also announced during this match that today's main event would see Tommy Rich and Ole Anderson of the Horsemen do battle against Iceman King Parsons and Buddy Roberts. Ventura wasn't too fond of the Freebirds trying to align themselves with Kerry Von Erich. He thought the Freebirds knew better than to side with a born loser like Kerry Von Erich.
Greg Valentine made Carry Clarke submit to the Figure-Four Leglock in 0:03:15. Rating: 1/2*
MATCH #2 “The World's Strongest Man” Ted Arcidi (w/ “Superstar” Billy Graham) vs. Barry Darsow
We all were stunned to see Ted Arcidi make his NWF debut last week in Little Rock. And not so much because there was no inclination he was close to starting a wrestling career, but because he had decided to align himself with Billy Graham and cost Larry Zbyszko a shot at the World Title. Graham wasn't lying last week when he said he had an insurance policy to guarantee that Paul Orndorff would become the number one contender. We got to see him in action for the first time today and what a powerhouse! Barry Darsow is no slouch in the power department, but he was no match for the brute strength of Arcidi. We saw that when they locked up and Arcidi threw Darsow to the mat with a shove. Darsow didn't alter his game plan as he kept trying to brawl with Arcidi, but anyone could see that it wasn't going to work. Even with the edge when it comes to experience, Darsow was unable to find a way to control Arcidi. Arcidi used several clubbing blows to knock Darsow silly and finished him with his finisher, the Clean and Jerk, a move where he lifted Darsow over his head with a Gorilla Press before dropping him face first on the top turnbuckle.
Ted Arcidi pinned Barry Darsow with the Clean and Jerk in 0:08:08. Rating: * ¾
A big win for Arcidi that showed he is not only “The World's Strongest Man,” but also capable inside a wrestling ring. Graham joined Arcidi in the ring with a microphone. Graham wanted the fans to show their appreciation for the world record holder for the bench press. While being showered in boos, Graham told Zbyszko that he made a grave mistake in chasing after Paul Orndorff and ruining Graham's epic encounter with the Executioner back in Charleston. Graham has friends in high places, men like Ted Arcidi, who were willing to watch his back. And now Zbyszko could forget all about Paul Orndorff because he had made it Arcidi's personal mission to destroy the Cruncher!
AT THE DESK:
Jesse Ventura was happy to announce that Graham had worked with the Championship Committee and signed a match between Larry Zbyszko and Ted Arcidi to take place in Atlanta. Gordon Solie still wanted to know what Graham's connection was with Arcidi to which Ventura hinted that Graham had helped Arcidi train to break the world record.
MATCH #3 Dirty Cowboys vs. Jim Jeffers/Stoney Burke
Bob Orton Jr. and Dick Slater were charged with getting Roddy Piper's revenge against the Four Horsemen, but they failed in their attempt in Little Rock. They took the loss against Tommy Rich and Ole Anderson. That isn't to say they have given up on looking for retribution. Their foul mood was on full display as they double teamed their opponents unmercifully today before Slater pinned Stoney Burke with the Piledriver. Orton drilled Jim Jeffers with his cast as he tried to come in and make the save. Now with a goal in mind, the Cowboys look more focused than ever. One thing they haven't done is pick up many fans as the fans still do not like their attitude.
Dirty Cowboys (Bob Orton Jr. and Dick Slater) defeated Jim Jeffers and Stoney Burke when Slater pinned Burke with the Piledriver in 0:03:59. Rating: *
CHALLENGER FOR THE US TITLE NAMED:
Our new US Champion “Hacksaw” Butch Reed came to the ring to be told who his first title defense would be against. Sean Mooney was in the ring as he congratulated Reed on a hard fought victory over Savage despite the dubious circumstances. Reed chuckled at the idea that a woman busting her ankle, her man being too whipped to ignore her, and being thoroughly dominated during the match was dubious. Savage could only take so much as he charged the ring. Savage put his finger directly in Reed's face and told him to watch his mouth. Reed slapped Savage's hand out of the way which led to Savage shoving Reed. The two men were about to throw down, but Mooney interrupted them by saying he had an announcement to make. Savage told him to get it over with and announce him as the man facing Reed in Atlanta. Mooney apologized to Savage before saying that he would NOT be getting the title shot. Instead, it would be CURT HENNIG! Savage grabbed Mooney by his suit jacket and asked him what the hell he was talking about. Reed rolled out of the ring during the ruckus and headed to the back as Savage had to restrain himself from clocking Mooney.
AT THE DESK:
Gordon Solie had to admit that came out of left field. Ventura thought it made all the sense in the world. Curt Hennig had been very impressive since focusing on singles competition. He was also the man that ended Nikita Koloff's undefeated streak. Solie agreed that Hennig is more than capable inside the ring and it would not surprise him if Hennig was able to capture the US Title in Atlanta. Ventura thought he was going too far with that prediction. Hennig is good, but nowhere near the level of Hacksaw. Solie thought Hennig might be able to catch Reed underestimating him and defeated him, much like he did with Nikita. We would hear from Curt Hennig next week here on Worldwide.
MATCH #4 “The Russian Nightmare” Nikita Koloff (w/ “Luscious” Johnny V) vs. Dale Williams
The man who lost his undefeated streak to Curt Hennig, Nikita Koloff, was in action next against the unfortunate Dale Williams. No one wants to step into the ring against Koloff. We saw why that is as he was destroyed in under three minutes. There have been bear maulings that were less brutal.
During the match Harley Race cut an insert promo about how he knew Johnny V was hoping he could hold off a match between Race and Hercules Hernandez. He'd done a pretty good job of it, too. But Race was sick and tired of waiting around. Race put his name on a contract to face Nikita Koloff in Atlanta since he figured the only way to get what he wanted was to mow down each and every one of Johnny V's men. He'd start with Johnny's favorite toy, Nikita.
Nikita Koloff pinned Dale Williams with the Russian Sickle in 0:02:12. Rating: DUD
MATCH #5 Four Horsemen (Ole Anderson/”Wildfire” Tommy Rich) vs. Fabulous Freebirds (Iceman King Parsons/Buddy Roberts)
The main event of today's episode of Worldwide saw the Horsemen square off against the Freebirds. This was the first time the two stables have met inside the ring, and you could tell that both teams knew the importance of this match. Both groups want to be known as the most feared alliance in wrestling and a win here would go a long way to helping them prove it. There was a bunch of stalling as neither team wanted to disappoint their fellow stablemates in the back. Despite their villainous ways earlier this year, the Freebirds have picked up quite a few fans as of late, and we saw the result of that late in the match. Ole had finally worn down Roberts enough to lock him in an abdominal stretch. He was using the top rope to get extra leverage when referee Gil Roman's eyes were off of him. Roberts was in a great deal of pain, but he was able to use the fans cheering him on to give him a boost of adrenaline. He hiptossed Ole to escape the hold and made a diving tag to Parsons. Ole tagged in Rich at the same time, and both Parsons and Rich met in the center of the ring. Parsons was getting the decided upper hand and prepared to land his Flying Clothesline. The match came to a screeching halt, however, when RIC FLAIR and GREG VALENTINE stormed the ring.
The Fabulous Freebids (Iceman King Parsons and Buddy Roberts) defeated Four Horsemen (Tommy Rich and Ole Anderson) when Parsons defeated Rich by disqualification in 0:12:15. Rating: **
What we saw next was an utter beatdown. The Four Horsemen used their four on two advantage to keep Parsons and Roberts from mounting any sort of comeback. The crowd exploded when Michael “P.S.” Hayes sprinted down the aisle. He even had the Horsemen on the ropes for a second as he dropped Ole with a dropkick, leveled Valentine with an uppercut, and tossed Rich into the corner. His momentum was stopped when Flair chop blocked his knee. The Horsemen regrouped and continued their work. Knowing that Terry Gordy was not in the arena due to rehabbing his knee, they pleasantly took their time stomping away the Freebirds. They were going to teach the Freebirds a lesson about not interfering in their plans. Flair and the Horsemen were furious when the Freebirds saved Kerry Von Erich in Little Rock, and it was time to make them pay.
Flair let out a “Whoo!” before applying the Figure-Four Leglock to Hayes. Parsons and Roberts were being held stationary by the remaining three Horsemen when the crowd let out another raucous cheer as KERRY VON ERICH ran to the ring with a steel chair in hand! He swung it wildly to clear the ring. Flair saw him coming and quickly released the hold and joined his fellows on the outside. Kerry never connected with his chair, but it was a useful weapon in keeping the Horsemen at bay. Flair was none too pleased, but he led the Horsemen back up the aisle. Kerry dropped the chair as Hayes tried to come thank him for his help. Kerry wanted no thanks as he left the ring quickly thereafter.
AT THE DESK:
Gordon Solie said it was an exciting development that Kerry Von Erich would come to the Freebirds' aid. Jesse Ventura said it was simply payback, and he sincerely doubted Kerry wanted anything to do with Hayes and his misfits after almost a year of being abused by them. Solie thought we would learn more about this next week on Worldwide.
Match Observations:
Next week on Worldwide we will hear from Hulk Hogan and Paul Orndorff about their upcoming title match. We also have the Midnight Express and Big Bubba Rogers in six man action as they prepare themselves for their big match against the Road Warriors and George Steele. It won't be an easy task as they face the Hart Brothers and newcomer Manny Fernandez. And in our main event, newly crowned number one contender to the US Title, Curt Hennig, will face “Dirty” Dick Slater!

You have to imagine Von Erich will eventually put the past behind them and team up with the Freebirds, who by the way have made the transition from hated heels to loved faces quite nicely. Looking forward to hopefully an extended feud between them and the Horsemen.
Interesting choice giving Hennig the US title match. Don't think he's quite ready for the gold yet but should give Reed a good match. Savage's reaction to not getting the match was nice. Doesn't seem like he's in a stable state of mind right now. Maybe the seeds are being planted for an eventual heel turn.
I think Nikita is going to destroy Race. A ferocious up and comer against an aging vet on the backside of his career, might not be pretty. But I'm sure Race has some tricks up his sleeve.

Oh, Ventura, your excuse train has many stops and they're all wonderful. Ventura is clearly on Orndorff's side, but it makes me wonder if he'll actually get involved or not.
I think Kerry will ultimately be teaming up with the Freebirds for this match, but I like that you're dragging it out a bit.
Poor Darsow. He's the first unfortunate opponent of Arcidi. But if anyone can pull an actual good match out of Arcidi, it will be Zbyszko. But I think in the end, I'll be saying "Poor Larry" as well.
I like that the Dirty Cowboys still have a bone to pick with the Horsemen. I don't think they will pick said bone, mind you, but glad they're not putting it to rest yet.
Savage can't be happy with Hennig getting the US Title shot. Macho Man is so unstable, I could see him getting into a scrap with Hennig over this too.
If you're going to get to Race vs. Hercules, Race pretty much has to beat Nikita, which makes me sad. I want Nikita wrestling for championships!
A hot end to the show. The Freebirds are definitely faces now, though I can see them still turning on Kerry at some point. I just don't see how Von Erich can trust them. I think this battle goes the way of the Horsemen, at least until Gordy is cleared to compete again.

Ventura is going to carry this "travesty of justice" with him for his entire broadcasting career.
The Horsemen against The Freebirds is a feud I could see going on for a long time. As much as I'd like Kerry to team with the Freebirds I have my fingers crossed that Gordy is healthy by then.
Excellent in-ring debut for Arcidi. He was rumored to be the next big thing in WWF but all I remember about the guy was his big, rubber action figure. It already looks like he's destined for bigger things in this Universe. A feud with Larry Z is a phenomenal way to start.
The Dirty Cowboys still have a mean streak. It's funny, if they use nefarious tactics against guys like Jeffers & Burke they'll get boo'd but against the likes of the Horsemen they'll be cheered.
Mooney has just thrusted Hennig in the middle of an increasingly heated rivarly. I don't envy him one bit, Henning that is. In fact, I don't envy Mooney either.
Race vs. Nikita should be pretty good. It raises Nikita's stock even more. I think Race has to win to get at Herc but I don't see how he does it.
Kerry is a good guy for life and he'll always do the right thing. The Freebirds helped him out and he was just repaying his debt. He's not interested in any sort of allegience. You've got a lot to work with for this angle.

NWF WORLDWIDE Atlanta, GA | August 25, 1985 (Taped August 10, 1985)
Commentators: Gordon Solie and Jesse Ventura
Jesse Ventura was out of his neck brace and the black eye had healed. What hadn't was his bruised pride as he continued to campaign that Hulk Hogan should have been disqualified in his match back in Little Rock. When Gordon Solie announced that Hulk Hogan was about to join them in the studio, however, Ventura quickly shut his mouth. Hogan walked over to the interview stage while Ventura stewed in his chair.
INTERVIEW STAGE W/ HULK HOGAN:
Hulk Hogan wasted no time in thanking Jesse Ventura for giving him a hard fought match. You could overhear Ventura trying to respond, but Hogan spoke over him saying that he still couldn't get the job done. Even though he had Paul Orndorff, that coward, sneak attack him from behind, Ventura couldn't get the job done. And now he was not surprised to see Ventura back behind the desk where he belongs and nursing his wounds. When you try to bite Hulkamania, Hulkamania bites back! He then turned his attention to his upcoming match with Paul Orndorff in Atlanta. Hogan said Orndorff could proclaim himself with the title Mr. Wonderful all he wants, but the only title that really matters is the one that is around his waist. The title is in jeopardy, however, due to one move. The Piledriver. He felt the Piledriver in Little Rock. And he was lucky enough to escape without permanent injury. If Orndorff hits it again, he doesn't know if his neck will be able to handle the pressure and compression that comes with the move. Especially with the way Orndorff applies it. It might lead to him being pinned in the center of the ring. But Orndorff may not get the chance to use the Piledriver if Hogan hits Orndorff first with the barrage that comes when Hulkamania is pumping through his veins. Hogan promised Orndorff that Hulkamania is going to run wild in Atlanta, and it was going to “run wild all over you!”
MATCH #1 The Mountaineers vs. Steve King/Dale Williams
Barry Darsow and Crusher Blackwell are still working out the kinks in their tag team, but there is no doubt that the potential is there. They are both big boys (Crusher is way larger than simply big), and it is going to take a team smarter than Steve King and Dale Williams to find a way to counteract their size. The move they have decided to use to finish off their opponents where Darsow whips his own partner, Crusher Blackwell, into the turnbuckles where Blackwell splashes an exposed opponent is called the Avalanche. And I don't see anyone being able to kick out of that. Williams fell victim to that move tonight.
The Mountaineers (Barry Darsow and Crusher Blackwell) defeated Steve King and Dale Williams when Blackwell pinned Williams with the Avalanche in 0:03:07. Rating: -* ¼
The Mountaineers donned their deer skin ponchos and stomped their way to the back. These two tough mountain men might be able to make an impact in the tag team division if they keep improving and increase their experience working together.
MATCH #2 The Midnight Express/Big Bubba Rogers (w/ Jim Cornette) vs. The Hart Brothers/”The Raging Bull” Manny Fernandez
Jim Cornette wanted his men to be prepared for their match next week and so he signed them on to compete in a six-man tag here on Worldwide. He knows that Hawk, Animal, and George Steele won't be a well-oiled machine in Atlanta, especially with Steele being older, and a match to prepare might give them an advantage. Much like their opponents in Atlanta, the men they faced today were an odd grouping. The Hart Brothers were teamed with a ring veteran but newcomer to NWF, Manny Fernandez. Their chemistry was practically non-existent as Fernandez tried to force his way into the ring several times and did not want to listen to Keith or Bruce as the match went on. Meanwhile, Cornette had his men tagging in and out quickly with the Midnight Express providing the speed, and Big Bubba Rogers coming in with some power when needed. Fernandez grew frustrated in the match when he had Eaton worn down and tagged out to Keith. Keith came in, but Eaton was able to avoid a dropkick and tag back out. Fernandez, seeing his hard work wasted in his mind, simply hopped off the apron and threw his hands up in disgust. He walked out leaving the Hart Brothers alone. A two-on-three is bad enough, but with Cornette calling the shots from the outside, it was basically a four-on-two. They tried their best, but Condrey and Eaton put Bruce away with the Flap Jack. The Hart Brothers can't be too pleased how things turned out with the Raging Bull.
The Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton and Dennis Condrey) and Big Bubba Rogers defeated The Hart Brothers (Bruce Hart and Keith Hart) and Manny Fernandez when Condrey pinned Bruce Hart with the Flap Jack in 0:13:29. Rating: **
A PAIR OF ANIMALS AND HAWK ARE READY FOR WAR:
Back in the studio, Sean Mooney stood with Paul Ellering, the Road Warriors, and George Steele. Steele kept rubbing his head on Mooney's suit jacket which had the interviewer slightly distracted. Ellering said it was an honor to have Steele stand with the Road Warriors in Atlanta. Steele was a legend in the sport, and he'd always respected the man. Steele started to pet Mooney's hair which led to him trying to swat the Animal's hand away. Ellering admitted he didn't always understand Steele, but he stood by his his respect for the man. Animal of the Road Warriors joined in the conversation by saying while he had respect for George Steele, he had absolutely none for Jim Cornette and his gaggle of idiots. Animal said it had gone beyond the Midnight Express costing them the Tag Team Titles, and now all they wanted was to leave them bruised and bloodied. Hawk ended the promo by growling “Oooh, what a ruuush!”
MATCH #3 Harley Race vs. Jim Jeffers
As Harley Race came to ringside for his match, “Luscious” Johnny V cut an insert promo. He wanted to give Race a second chance to back out of the match with Nikita Koloff. He knew that Race wanted to get his hands on Hercules Hernandez, but it was no reason to commit suicide. The promo ended with Johnny V laughing. Race almost acted like he had heard Johnny V's words while in the ring as he took Jim Jeffers to school by wrestling him to the mat several times. Jeffers grew frustrated and tried to throw a right hand eventually, but all that did was open him up to Race's brawling ability. The match didn't last long as Race ended it abruptly with the Piledriver.
Harley Race pinned Jim Jeffers with the Piledriver in 0:02:34. Rating: 3/4*
THE KING DEMANDS ONE LAST MATCH WITH THE MANIAC:
A recorded promo from Jerry Lawler aired. Lawler said he knew had let himself and his fans down in Little Rock. He should have been able to beat Matt Borne in a match that used to be his specialty. There is no one that can dig deep in a fight quite like the King, but he just couldn't find that second gear against Borne. But by leaving him laying like he did in Arkansas, a broken man, he awoke something in the King. Something that he thought was dormant. He's coming to Atlanta, and he wants Borne one last time. No disqualification. This time Borne was going to get everything the King had to offer.
AT THE DESK:
Gordon Solie was already notified that a rematch has been signed between Borne and Lawler to take place in Atlanta. Jesse Ventura wasn't so sure Borne should agree to the match as he didn't like the look in Lawler's eyes. He said he had seen it before during his feuds with Harley Race and Magnum T.A. And we all know how much blood was shed in those wars. Solie thought Lawler had mellowed in the past couple of years, but Borne may have brought out the worst in Lawler with the way he has treated the King over the past couple of months.
MATCH #4 “The World's Strongest Man” Ted Arcidi (w/ “Superstar” Billy Graham) vs. Stoney Burke
Larry Zbyszko has fought some of the biggest names in the sport, but he has never faced a man quite like Ted Arcidi. I've never seen a man as strong as him. It is amazing how he is able to toss his opponent around the ring. Not only that, but he is able to lift his opponents up over his head even if they are laying on the ground. That's the impressive feat we saw today as Stoney Burke was prone on the mat, but Arcidi was somehow able to still lift him up over his head for the Clean and Jerk.
Ted Arcidi pinned Stoney Burke with the Clean and Jerk in 0:01:42. Rating: DUD
After the match was over, Graham joined Arcidi in the ring and called “Mr. Wonderful” to the ring. We went through the normal disrobing of Paul Orndorff. Graham held the mirror in front of Orndorff so he flex in front of it. Thankfully, the crowd did not respond kindly to their actions and started to boo. It shortened up the flexing as Graham took the house mic. Graham berated the crowd for insulting the next World Heavyweight Champion. Orndorff told Hulk Hogan that his time as champion was coming to a close because no one can stand up to Mr. Wonderful. Just ask Larry Zbyszko. Orndorff had been biding his time, but it had come and he now thought the NWF was ready for him to become World Champion. Graham then introduced Orndorff once again, this time as the future World Heavyweight Champion. Orndorff went back to flexing as Graham applauded. Arcidi simply stood there looking as menacing as ever.
AT THE DESK:
Since he had properly softened up Hulk Hogan, Jesse Ventura thought Paul Orndorff was a shoo-in to win the title in Atlanta. Gordon Solie figured Orndorff would be Hogan's toughest title defense to date. Not just because of his ability, but Orndorff and Hogan had a long and storied past with one another. Their matches in 1983 are well documented. Someone that knows Hogan so well might just know the secret to stopping Hulkamania. Ventura could hardly contain his giddiness at the thought of Hogan finally dropping the title.
MATCH #5 “Dirty” Dick Slater vs. Curt Hennig
Curt Hennig is just a week away from the biggest match of his life as he'll be challenging for the US Title. Some of the biggest names in the sport have held that title, Paul Orndorff, Greg Gagne, David Von Erich, Jerry Lawler, and so you know Hennig will do anything to join that list. Before he could focus on current champion Butch Reed, however, he had to get through “Dirty” Dick Slater. Slater, along with partner Bob Orton Jr., has been preoccupied with the Horsemen the past couple of months. That didn't mean he wasn't ready to dish out some punishment to Hennig. Slater looked every bit the angry cowboy we are used to seeing as he stomped away at the youngster. Hennig has a lot of resiliency in him, though, as seen by being able to withstand Nikita Koloff's onslaught and still defeat him. We saw the same strategy here as he let Slater punch himself out. Hennig then caught an opening with Slater missed a charge into the corner. A flurry of moves led to the Fisherman Suplex and a big win for Hennig going into Atlanta.
Curt Hennig pinned Dick Slater with the Fisherman Suplex in 0:12:51. Rating: ***
AT THE DESK:
Gordon Solie asked Jesse Ventura if he thought Curt Hennig had a chance against Butch Reed in Atlanta. Ventura was hesitant, but admitted that Hennig can take a great deal of punishment and still come out strong. If the match goes long, he thought Reed could be in trouble. Solie knew Randy Savage was unhappy that he wasn't given this shot, but if any other man deserved it, it had to be Curt Hennig. A win over the undefeated Nikita Koloff really opened the eyes of the Championship Committee as to what a talent they had in Hennig.
Solie also announced that another match had been signed for Atlanta. He was just told that the Four Horsemen, all four of them, will compete against the Freebirds. He had yet to hear who Michael Hayes will get to be his fourth since Terry Gordy is still out with his injury. Ventura hoped Kerry Von Erich had enough sense to stay away from what is sure to be a beatdown. The show came to a close with Solie running down the upcoming show next week in Atlanta, and telling fans to tune in next week where we will get some last minute words from some of the men that will be competing in the big show right here in Georgia.
September 1, 1985 – Atlanta, GA: WORLD TITLE – Hulk Hogan(c) vs. Paul Orndorff US TITLE – Butch Reed (c) vs. Curt Hennig NO DQ – Jerry Lawler vs. Matt Borne The Four Horsemen vs. The Fabulous Freebirds The Road Warriors/George Steele vs. The Midnight Express/Big Bubba Rogers Larry Zbyszko vs. Ted Arcidi Harley Race vs. Nikita Koloff

Poor Jesse. Only time can heal a bruised ego.
Good Hogan promo. It's nice to see him putting over how much of a threat Orndorff really is.
Deerskin ponchos are going to become huge merchandise sellers if the Mountaineers keep this up.
Interesting way to bring in Fernandez. I'm hoping you have more luck with him than I did. Looks like he's going to start as a lower-end heel. Midnights/Bubba are definitely going to be the more cohesive team at the house show.
The Road Warriors are scary. I just don't know how well they will function with Steele though.
Easy squash for Race. Match with Nikita should be ugly but hard-hitting.
Lawler really has to win the match with Borne, especially how the last few have gone.
Arcidi is so odd with Graham and Orndorff. I'm intrigued though. I'm not sure how much I dig it yet, but I'll give it a chance. It's cool that you're at least trying something new with a guy I wouldn't have dreamed would get used in this universe at all.
Looks like the Dirty Cowboys are going to be doing enhancement work for a bit. Not necessarily a bad role for them. Hennig needed a win to go over strong into his US Title match. Think it's too soon for him to win singles gold though.

Clean and Jerk? Flying Burrito? Who names these finishers? Must be the same goofball who came up with The Mountaineers gimmick. But seriously: pairing Road Warrior Animal with George "The Animal" Steele is the kind of joke I would do on an IHLW spoof show. Shocked to see Piper get the boot. I hope he signs with WWA just to give them some star power, but Piper is gold right now. Very happy with the Horsemen's debut. I hope we get a War Games match out of the Horsemen-Freebirds feud. Perfect way for Savage to lose the US Title to Reed. The Hogan-Ventura feud was good fun too.

Ryan used him before with that finisher and he didn't get nearly this much flack! The Clean and Jerk is a pretty cool finishing name. Came up with it myself. Can't use War Games. Ryan's property.

Excellent promo with Hogan putting over the effects of the Piledriver. Orndorff is looking like a major threat here.
As goofy as the Mountaineers are they feel a bit ahead of their time. We will see more gimmicky teams like this in the future no doubt but it's left to be seen whether or not The Moutaineers will be the trendsetters.
I've always watched Fernandez IRL as a face but he just looks like he's a dick and that lends himself to be easily booked as a heel. Walking out on The Harts suits him well.
I wonder if Steele's alliance eventually leads to a version of the Legion of Doom with him and The Road Warriors. I wouldn't buy it now but if booked correctly who knows...
If Race doesn't beat Nikita I have no idea where he goes from there.
A rematch between Lawler/Borne was inevitable and now with No DQ's we might see some of the old Lawler tricks come out.
Arcidi is impressing me. He's getting DUDs in less than 2 minutes but so what - you're writing him as a killing machine and in turn, that's helping Orndorff's legitimacy as a threat to Hogan.
Hennig needed this more than Slater but Slater better get back on track and soon. He & Orton don't want to fall into obscurity. Hennig isn't ready for Reed though.
Horsemen vs. Freebirds is a huge match to announce before the show closes. I've got to believe Kerry steps up as the man to team with the Freebirds.

NWF WORLDWIDE Atlanta, GA | September 1, 1985 (Taped August 31, 1985)
Commentators: Gordon Solie and Jesse Ventura
Later tonight we were going to see one of the bigger shows all year in NWF's new hometown, Atlanta. Before we could get there, however, we had one last episode of Worldwide. And it wasn't going to disappoint with a main event of the Dirty Cowboys going against the new team of Crusher Blackwell and Barry Darsow, the Mountaineers. Gordon Solie also announced that due to Manny Fernandez walking out on his team last week, he had requested some time alone in the ring. Jesse Ventura couldn't blame Fernandez for leaving those two losers, the Hart Brothers, to be beaten by Jim Cornette's men. Solie sent it to the ring where Fernandez was waiting.
THE RAGING BULL:
“The Raging Bull” Manny Fernandez stood alone in the ring as he vented about being stuck on a team with the Hart Brothers last week. He said he did not come to the NWF to be paired up with a couple of losers from Canada. He was here to bust heads and win championships. Even though he was not happy being stuck on that team, he still had his team well on its way to victory when Keith Hart screwed it all up. Watching that match it was pretty clear who the weak link of the Hart Brothers was. But to hell with the Hart Brothers since they weren't worth his time. He wanted to focus on Butch Reed and Hulk Hogan, the two men that hold titles he plans to go after. Fernandez could get no further as he was interrupted by KEITH HART. Keith told him he had a lot of nerve calling him the weak link of the team. The weak link was the man who couldn't stick around for the whole match. The man who got so scared of someone like Big Bubba Rogers that he walked out of the match! Keith Hart flat said, “Manny Fernandez, you are nothing but a chicken!” Several chants of chicken were heard throughout the arena. Fernandez shouted for the fans to shut their mouths, but they just got louder. Fernandez said he would show who is chicken as he demanded Keith face him right then and there. Keith admitted that was all he wanted and then plastered Manny with a right hand.
MATCH #1 “The Raging Bull” Manny Fernandez vs. Keith Hart
We haven't seen much of either Hart Brother in singles competition. Keith Hart was out here to get some form of revenge against the Raging Bull for leaving his brother and himself alone last week against the Midnight Express and Big Bubba Rogers. So, he was going to go at it alone. He had Fernandez on the ropes in the early going with his high flying style. Fernandez had to hold on through the barrage of offense at the beginning, but he was eventually able to slow the pace down. Once Fernandez was in control we saw a mean streak come out in him as he choked, kicked, and clawed at Keith. He took it too far when he used the top rope to choke Keith. Referee Gil Roman was there to count the five, but after five seconds Manny refused to release the hold. Fernandez was extremely upset at the occasional chant of “chicken!” towards him through the match and he was taking it out on Keith. Roman tried to pry Fernandez off of Keith, but was simply shoved backwards for his efforts. Roman had no choice but to call for the bell.
Keith Hart defeated Manny Fernandez by disqualification in 0:07:37. Rating: * ½
Within seconds BRUCE HART was sliding into the ring and peppering Fernandez with lefts and rights. Fernandez left the ring in a hurry as Bruce checked on his brother. Keith was a bit shaken, but was alright for the most part. Bruce was furious, however, as Fernandez slowly made his way to the locker rooms. Bruce picked up a microphone and told Manny Fernandez “if you have any guts at all, you'll meet ME later tonight!” Fernandez was hesitant in accepting which led to Bruce calling him a chicken! The fans picked up on the idea as they hollered out the insult towards the Raging Bull. Fernandez finally relented and told Bruce he'd get his match later tonight in Atlanta.
AT THE DESK:
Another match was added to an already packed lineup. The Body didn't think it was a great idea for Fernandez to be taking on this match on short notice. Not to mention he had already competed today while Bruce will be fresh. Solie was disgusted by Fernandez's actions as the Raging Bull's true colors were coming to light. He hoped Bruce taught Fernandez a lesson about how to respect your opponent in a few hours time.
THE CRUNCHER:
Backstage, Larry Zbyszko was pumped up for his upcoming match with Ted Arcidi. Zbyszko told Billy Graham he could throw all the muscle heads he wanted at him, he would take each and everyone of them to the woodshed. He had come to the NWF to get revenge for his mentor, the old bastard, Bruno Sammartino, but now he was here for himself. Arcidi screwed him out of a shot at the World Title, something that has eluded him so far in the sport, and he didn't take it lightly. He hoped Arcidi didn't take it lightly when it was Crunch Time. He'd beaten countless muscle heads before, Arcidi was simply joining the list later on tonight. Then: Paul Orndorff.
MATCH #2 George “The Animal” Steele vs. Ricky Reeves
We hadn't seen George Steele actually compete inside a NWF ring yet. This would be the first time we'd get to witness the crazed man in action. And despite some of his more insane antics and getting up there in age, he can still bring it in the ring. He even took time for a brief snack as he ripped up one of the turnbuckle pads and started chewing on the stuffing. Ricky Reeves tried to use the distraction to ambush the Animal, but Steele fought back and locked Reeves in the Flying Hammerlock to earn a submission win. Jim Cornette better come up with a plan for Steele because otherwise the six-man tag might be brief.
George Steele made Ricky Reeves submit to the Flying Hammerlock in 0:03:56. Rating: DUD
AT THE DESK:
Gordon Solie thought it was great to see George Steele back in action. Jesse Ventura looked at Solie like he had lost his mind. Solie couldn't wait to see how Paul Ellering would gel the Road Warriors together with George Steele. Ventura claimed there was no way Steele, Hawk, and Animal would be on the same page unlike Big Bubba, Dennis Condrey, and Beautiful Bobby. Cornette will lead his team to the winner's circle later on tonight.
MATCH #3 The Fabulous Freebirds vs. Mark Fleming/George South
A big night is ahead for Buddy Roberts and Iceman King Parsons. They are scheduled to team up with Michael Hayes to square off against the Four Horsemen. Still no word on who their fourth will be. Hayes has been pushing Kerry Von Erich to align with them, but Kerry has said he wants nothing to do with the Freebirds. It might be hard for him to sit back and watch the Freebirds go at it 3-on-4, however, since the only reason the Freebirds are in this mess is because they saved Kerry from a beating at the hands of the Four Horsemen. Terry Gordy is still not fully recovered from his injury, but rumor has it that he'll be at ringside to provide support. As for this match, it went as you'd expect. Roberts finished it easily enough with his DDT.
The Fabulous Freebirds (Iceman King Parsons and Buddy Roberts) defeated Mark Fleming and George South when Roberts pinned South with the DDT in 0:02:20. Rating: * ½
AT THE DESK W/ SOME NEWS:
Gordon Solie relayed that he'd just been given some information that tonight on the show in Atlanta, a huge announcement will be made regarding the NWF's future. Word has it that it has something to do with the next few months and possibly involves NWF taking the next big step as a wrestling organization. Jesse Ventura couldn't wait to hear what it was, but he figured it might be the announcement of a TV special where Paul Orndorff celebrates his World Title victory that will occur later on tonight. Solie told Ventura to knock it off.
INTERVIEW STAGE W/ RANDY SAVAGE AND MISS ELIZABETH:
In the studio, Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth joined Sean Mooney on the interview stage. Mooney wanted to know if Randy Savage had plans on attending the event later on tonight. Savage's response was that he would be there, and he should be competing for the US Title. He had a great deal of respect for Curt Hennig, but he was over his head in challenging Butch Reed. Mooney said Hennig did defeat Nikita Koloff to earn this shot so maybe he was capable of upsetting Reed. Savage told Mooney to not fill Hennig with false hope. Reed was going to pummel Hennig, and he'd be there to put an end to it. And maybe then he'd get his rightful rematch. Mooney started to question what Savage meant by putting an end to it, but Savage gave him a shove and ripped the microphone out of his hand. Savage told Reed to be prepared because he was in for a long night in Atlanta.
And we got a surprise appearance by CURT HENNIG. Hennig was apparently already in studio as he stepped onto the stage. Hennig told Savage he would do what he couldn't do, and that was beat Butch Reed. Hennig didn't need any help, didn't want any help, and was more than capable of winning the US Title outright tonight in Atlanta. Savage pointed his finger in Hennig's face and told him to watch his mouth when talking to the Macho Man or he might have to knock some sense into him. Miss Elizabeth quickly stepped in trying to put an end to the hostility. Hennig didn't back down from Savage. They stared at each other for some time before Elizabeth was finally able to whisper something in Savage's ear. Savage relented as he stuck his hand out to Hennig. Hennig was leery, but finally shook the hand of Savage. Savage wished him good luck as he stormed off the stage pulling Elizabeth by the hand.
MATCH #4 Big Bubba Rogers (w/ Jim Cornette) vs. Rip Oliver
Big Bubba Rogers hasn't had much time in the ring, but his size is more than enough to make up for his inexperience. He'll be needing to use all of his size and power later on tonight in the six-man tag against the Road Warriors and George Steele. One thing is certain, if Big Bubba hits his Big Bubba Slam tonight, someone is getting knocked out. He used it here to put Rip Oliver down.
Big Bubba Rogers pinned Rip Oliver with the Big Bubba Slam in 0:01:33. Rating: 3/4*
MATCH #5 Dirty Cowboys vs. The Mountaineers
Quite a bit of history in this match. You'll remember that Bob Orton Jr. and Crusher Blackwell used to be under Roddy Piper's tutelage at the same time. They even briefly feuded after Piper fired Blackwell. The more things change the more they stay the same as they went right after one another when the bell rang. The Dirty Cowboys aren't used to a team trying to trade fists with them, but you aren't going to get much more than that when facing Blackwell and Darsow. Blackwell stayed in the ring for most of the match as he tried to get his hands on Orton. He was able to work over Orton's “broken arm” a little throughout the bout, but nothing that would have an effect in the finish of the match. Because Blackwell did most of the work, he was clearly winded by the end of the bout. That didn't stop them from attempting the Avalanche, but when Darsow whipped Blackwell into the corner Slater moved out of the way. Blackwell rammed the buckles hard and knocked whatever wind he had left right out of him. Slater rolled up the mountain of a man while Orton clocked Darsow with his cast. Referee Dave Hebner missed the shot by Orton, but he didn't miss the roll up and the Cowboys sneaked away with a win.
Dirty Cowboys (Bob Orton Jr. and Dick Slater) defeated The Mountaineers (Barry Darsow and Crusher Blackwell) when Slater pinned Blackwell after a roll up in 0:09:54. Rating: * 1/4
AT THE DESK:
Gordon Solie was excited because we were only a few hours away from the show in Atlanta. Jesse Ventura said there was going to be a party like never seen before after Mr. Wonderful won the World Title later on tonight. Solie thought Orndorff had a better chance than many in a match against Hulk Hogan, but Hulkamania is something that seems to get stronger the more difficult the challenge he faces. Ventura knew Billy Graham would have Orndorff in the best shape of his life. Hogan would be unable to keep up with the endurance of Orndorff. Several other matches were discussed, including the brutality that will be seen in the rematch between Jerry Lawler and Matt Borne, the US Title being up for grabs and if Hennig could pull out another upset, if Race had enough left in the tank to handle a monster like Nikita Koloff, and would Kerry Von Erich aid the Freebirds in their war with the Horsemen? Can Zbyszko's experience and talent level match up against Arcidi's strength? And would Cornette have a plan to counter the Road Warriors' power and George Steele's unique qualities?
All of this in just a short time here in Atlanta!
September 1, 1985 – Atlanta, GA: WORLD TITLE – Hulk Hogan(c) vs. Paul Orndorff US TITLE – Butch Reed (c) vs. Curt Hennig NO DQ – Jerry Lawler vs. Matt Borne The Four Horsemen vs. The Fabulous Freebirds The Road Warriors/George Steele vs. The Midnight Express/Big Bubba Rogers Larry Zbyszko vs. Ted Arcidi Harley Race vs. Nikita Koloff Bruce Hart vs. Manny Fernandez and a huge announcement about the future of the NWF!

Worldwide gets started by pulling us right into a heated match. We got a glimpse of the type of guy Fernandez is. This little feud will be good to get Fernandez going and keep the Harts on the map.
I'm not expecting fireworks when Arcidi and Larry Z meet up but it will be interesting. Larry is a hell of a worker and he'll get some good stuff from Arcidi. I don't think either can afford a huge loss right now so I'm anticipating some tomfoolery.
Steele should be a fun guy to book. He's extremely limited in the ring but he's got a fun gimmick. I don't think Cornette could come up with a plan for Steele if he tried.
You bring up a good point that the Freebirds are only in this mess because of Kerry Von Erich. Knowing the type of guy Von Erich is that should be reason enough for him to team up with the Freebirds.
I'm assuming NWF's announcement is similar to GCW's earlier this week.
I like the Savage/Hennig segment. We get the intensity we know from Savage and Hennig is stepping up. I don't see Hennig winning tonight and Savage probably has something to do with it. I think Savage is on a mission to anger everyone in NWF.
Bubba's got a ways to go before really coming into his own but Cornette has him in the perfect role right now.
Much needed win for the Dirty Cowboys. The Moutaineers are so new they can use that as excuse for the loss.
Atlanta has one hell of a lineup. I don't envy you for having to write it up.

Oooh... impromptu match. I don't think we've done that on TV yet. I can see this "chicken" thing sticking with Fernandez, kind of like Heenan is the Weasel.
Haha. And we'll have a second match against a Hart for the Raging Bull! That was well done. Seriously, keep the "chicken" thing up.
Zbyszko will probably beat Arcidi, but I'm guessing he'll also get laid out. Otherwise, I can't see the Cruncher NOT getting involved in the World Title match.
I was never a big fan of Steele, but he's such a unique character. How would you prepare for someone who eats the turnbuckles? I still don't know how well he'll be able to work with the Road Warriors though.
I think the match starts as a handicap match tonight, but Von Erich has to do the honorable thing and help the Freebirds out, whether he likes them or not.
Haha. Ventura is awesome. Big announcement, eh? Well, you need something compete with Slam Masters, the Grand 16, and Super Cade II!
I love what you're doing with Savage. When he's this much of a loose cannon, you can basically feud him with anyone. I'm not sure if this is leading to a "heel turn" per se, but the Macho Man is so great that outside of feuding with Hogan, he's probably always going to be a face right now.
You're doing a good job of bringing Bubba around slowly. He was REALLY green in 1985-86, so being the muscle and occasional squasher of jobbers is his best role right now.
Dirty Cowboys really needed that win. Doesn't matter that it was dirty - sometimes heels cheat just because they can. This seems to be the role the Mountaineers will fill from here on out.
Atlanta's going to be a big show. Lots of good angles going right now.

Little Rock, Little Rock, No surprises in the two first matches. Dream Team still going strong, and if the Sons of the Orient were going back anyway, they didn't need the win. Same with the Horsemen, they really need to look strong going forward. Borne is really getting his push here. Breaking the crown was a nice, evil touch. I'm pretty sure Lawler will get his revenge, but I liked Borne going over in the no dq match as well. Reed gets a belt at least, valet injury is a classic. I think this was the right way to go, at least if you want to keep the angle going for a while. That strongman is unknown to me, but clearly the deciding factor in this match. I have asked for a Orndorrf-Hogan program for a long time, and here it is Arcidi may cause problems for Hogan as well, I think. Ha, I think Steele is going to be fun to watch. Question is, will he be George "the Animal" Steele? Excellent match with Flair and von Erich, but this obviously builds towards the Freebirds being the first big feud of the Horsemen, with von Erich taking the place of Gordy since he's injured. Standard Hogan formula for the match, but having Orndorrf attack him beforehand made the match more even while also furthering the upcoming Orndorrf vs Hogan feud. A solid by-the-book show with few surprises, and several interesting feuds that seem to come together.

Post Little Rock
The banter between Solie and Ventura just keeps getting better. Closed fist more cheating than pre-match piledriving? Well, Ventura does have a point, and it's heel logic at its best.
I'm not sure how Darsow managed a decent 8-minute(!) match with a weightlifter, but kudos to him for that. I'm not sure how much wrestling training he has, but from his Wikipedia page, it didn't look like all that much before he was signed by Vince.
Does anyone know when it became bad etiquette to have multiple wrestlers with the same finisher? There's a lot of piledrivers going around now :-) I remember my first match, I missed a second rope legdrop, and was scolded by one of the other wrestlers for using his signature move. It wasn't even a finisher..
Hennig getting the title shot was a little surprising. Wonder if there's anything more to it, or only that you want to prolong the Savage vs Reed feud without it getting stale.
I really like the Freebirds vs Horsemen now. Kerry joining forces is a nice twist. I think he'll come around and be the fourth member.
Fernandez doesn't look like he wants any friends. That's a lousy move, Manny. At least you get to face both Hart-brothers in the same evening!
I think it's confusing with "the Animal" and Road Warrior Animal in the same promotion, let alone on the same team. You could easily have gone with George "the Beast" Steele or something like that, though I understand it's easy to just use the same monikers that they had in real life. Were they ever in the same promotion at the same time, though?
Oooh.. are we gonna see bloody-crazy Lawler? That doesn't bode well for Borne.
Slater will not stop Hennig on his way to the US Title match.
What the fudge is a Flying Hammerlock? My knowledge of 80's finisher moves are sadly poor.
Wonder what the big announcement is. I also wonder what will happen with Hennig and Savage. Love triangle?
Looking forward to Atlanta! (And I need to catch up on GCW and WWA as well)

Yeah, Steele and Animal are kind of hard to write up in the same match. Kind of stuck with it for now, but didn't give it much consideration before I started the angle.
The Piledrivers bad now, but they were even worse a few years ago. Tons of guys had them back around '81-'84...I've had to change it up a little, but even doing so, I still have too many with the Piledriver.
Flying Hammerlock was Steele locking a guy in a standard hammerlock from behind and then wrenching it so hard that the guy flew into the air. He then either held him up there (using his own body to help with the weight) or kept letting him put his feet back on the mat and then wrenching it again to send the guy back into the air for a few seconds. Pretty silly finisher.
